AID, adminship

Thanks for the heads up about the previous AID discussion. I had skimmed it, but didn't give it much thought since it seemed aimed at the opposite end of the problem (too many low vote noms staying too long, rather than older high-vote noms lagging out). Techtonic plate does seem like a problem... how did it get that many votes in the first place? But many of the others seems like much better candidates than most of the current noms.

On an unrelated topic, would you like to be an admin? I want to nominate you, if you're willing.--ragesoss 17:43, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA nomination

There is no need to withdraw. -- Kim van der Linde at venus 13:16, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Certainly not over such vague accusations when your RfA is otherwise doing well. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 13:23, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I can't even figure out what the problem is. I'd like to ask you to reconsider (but please don't take it as pressuring you to reconsider - it's your call entirely). Guettarda 14:23, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I post it also here (see RfA):
First of all, almost always, some people object against a nomination, for whatever reasons, valid or not. Second of all, people form their opinion not only on their own experiences, but also the experiences by others, and by sharing those experiences. Third of all, your nomination was going (is going I hope) to pass on a solid margin of ~93% of the people in favour, which shows that there is a sold support for you to become a administrator. Therefore, I ask you to not let this minor issue overrule the for the rest very possitive nomination.-- Kim van der Linde at venus 14:32, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I dod not want to say it so hard, but yes, I agree! :-) -- Kim van der Linde at venus 14:45, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Samsara, I'm sorry all this has caused you grief...that shouldn't be the way of things here. I have actively tried to get Hort, Freakofnurture and Tony Sidaway to reconsider and explained to them that if I am satisfied, then there sure as heck isn't any reason why theu shouldn't be. IN a nutshell, I was wholeheartedly wrong about my comments, and they were misplaced. Even if you were the same person, nothing you have done on Wikipedia has shown one any indication that your intentions are anything other than honorable. Let me take a look at the situation again and see what I can do...hang in there.--MONGO 18:35, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You recently made a change to the image layout in sequence alignment. It looks to me that it created a large gap in the article because the image now floats above the table of contents but below the text - but I'm using a 1920x1200 screen, and I don't have a lower-resolution one here to compare. I imagine this isn't a terribly common resolution, so if it looks right to you I'll leave it alone. Thanks! Opabinia regalis 00:22, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Worthy use of your admin powers

Congratulations on your recent granting of admin powers. I would like to draw your attention to a worthy use of those powers - the closing of copyvio reports listed on WP:CP. As you'll see there are many tens of such reports that need dealing with each day, and the backlog is barely being kept under control despite a couple of us spending lots of time working on them. The process is pretty easy and sorting a few only takes a little time and with a group of people helping, we can keep the backlog under control easily - just review the article & the source to ensure it is a copy, and then delete. Any help would certainly be appreciated - any questions, ask away. Kcordina Talk 09:07, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SCOTM thanks

Just wanted to surf by and say thanks for the great contributions to the science collaborations. I have every confidence that with a monthly collaboration, we can really achieve something, and your compiling todo lists will be really useful. The most important thing now will be rallying the relevant contributors and SCOTM regulars. Cheerio!

Thank you, I was happy to contribute some content. I will say it would be a little more encouraging if all those people who supported a collaboration actually contributed some content. But there's not much I can do about that. :-) — 14:24, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Target?

Nah, do not think so, I think this would have happened also if you were not an admin. Of the other four targeted, 3 were not admins [1]. As long as you make no controversial actions as an admin, it should not really increase beyond what you would have experienced now, because for vandals, it really does not matter. -- Kim van der Linde at venus 16:30, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome. I think you are a real good editor, and I appreciate your efforts and contributions to wikipedia very much. So, just see if we can make wikipedia even better. And if you have admin question, feel free to ask. -- Kim van der Linde at venus 16:36, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations. Here are what pass for words of wisdom from the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Spotting in Sweet Peas

There is a sweet pea seed coat spotting gene (SCP). However, it is probably best to leave it out so as not to confuse people with spotting by transposition. TedTalk/Contributions 12:32, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have any references for SCP, other than talking about it as a morphological marker. It could very well be that spotting only occurs as an epistatic effect. I don't have any of Meuhlbauer's original references. TedTalk/Contributions 13:26, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please note: Up to now everybody claiming there has been a system of torture-camps driven by Britains (Vorwurf: "wandelnde Skelette") was bashed as a Rechtsextremist not to say a Nazi. Now it seems it wasn't simple Volksverhetzung but real facts. The Zeit is known as a newspaper rarely to give false information; nevertheless they take for granted there has been a system of torture-centers. So they write last section: In einem der Internierungslager weigerte sich 1946 ein internierter SS-Lagerarzt, eine falsche Todesursache auf dem Totenschein zu notieren und bestand auf der Angabe starvation, Hungertod. I assume theres much more trouble soon to come. I like Burke's Peerage

I see; I looked at your edit summary more closely than your edit. I'll replace the deleted source with a more appropriate summary. BenB4 13:11, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Common Sense vs. Reliable Sources

Samsara,

I know you're an experienced editor, so I want to remind you that while common sense is often useful, it is not appropriate to substitute one's personal common sense for a reliable source. As a tertiary source, one of the core principles underlying Wikipedia is that we publish no original research. In the context of the Coffee article, removing a relevant fact supported by an article published by the Journal of the American Medical Association because your "common sense" disagrees is a form of original research. If you believe the JAMA article is in error, then the proper way to go about things is to find an equally reliable source that takes an opposing view. Then, we can cite both views in the article (hopefully down in the article body somewhere, rather than the intro) and let the reader decide.

Hope this helps. Regards, Nandesuka 12:02, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, and a question

I was originally going to come here to thank you for help on the sequence alignment layout and comments on its FAC, but now I have an ulterior motive :) What ulterior motive? Did I say that? No, actually pschemp took care of it. Opabinia regalis 04:33, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As a biologically knowledgeable admin, you might have a better idea on what to do with this - a user, using a variety of IPs, has repeatedly reinserted a link to rnaiconception.com in the RNA interference article, and made changes to the text to support the site's contentions. It is a personal advocacy site run by Mussa Ali (likely the anonymous editor), who is currently involved in an inventorship dispute about RNAi with his former advisor Craig Mello and the co-discoverer Andrew Fire. It's obviously inappropriate to link to only one disputant's perspective on this, and the dispute itself is taken seriously by no one other than Mussa Ali as far as I can tell. Despite several invitations, the user in question hasn't looked at the talk page on the issue, and he's apparently using a dynamic IP so he never gets his own talk page messages. Opabinia regalis 03:29, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stebbins

I have relpied to your comments on the FAC. I think it is pretty obvious from the lead and text that Stebbins major contribution to science was the development of a theory of plant evolution - which has shaped subsequent reseach in the field, and his part in the modern synthesis. If you think there are any important things that I have missed about his other work let me know.--Peta 03:38, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did worry about that when I started the WikiProject. Thats why I put off the poster bit for quite some time. Do you think I should extend that disclaimer about how we aren't taking any of the credit, we just want recruitment? --T. Moitie [talk] 17:04, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you ask me (which neither of you did), I think it should be kept in. It doesn't look to me like anyone is taking any credit for it, it's not that big, and that doesn't matter anyway as it's the talk page, and it was relevant to the article. Just my thoughts. --LorianTC 17:22, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

KDE and Wikimedia a working together to make it so you can import Wikimedia stuff into KDE applications (probably through a kisoslave). IIRC this will be in KDE4. Spell checking

Hi, I noticed your focus on spell checking on your user page (I presume that your instructions are for Windows, not Mac). When you spell check text in BrEng and AuEng, I suppose that you're aware of the checker's ignorance of the preference for "ise" and its two variants, over "ize" in those varieties of English?
