Peer Review of Ch'ol article!

[edit]

Hey Sammy, Your sources look great because they're all from journals.

About the Lead: It looks like you gathered some great new and valuable information. Most small issues I see are concerning the chronology of the article. Here are some suggestions I have for the lead:

1) I'd suggest starting it off with what the language is, where it is spoken, how many speakers, and then more general historical information, in that order. This order would help the reader understand more easily I believe.

2) It looks like the historical content relating to Spanish colonization is particularly important in understanding the present endangered Ch'ol. I think the lead does reflect the importance of this but it could be revised slightly to emphasize the importance.

3) Were you able to find out how many speakers spoke Ch'ol at the "height" of it being spoken? Maybe it's impossible to find this information, but I think it would be valuable so I'm suggesting it.

4) "The estimated number of modern speakers is between 100,000 and 200,000 people.[2]" can go at the top as well as "Ch’ol is one of three Mayan languages that are classified under the Cholan category.[3] It is an ergative language that also has accusative patterns in the main verbs which shows split-ergativity.[4]" I think putting these at the top would make sense chronologically and really help with retaining what it says.

For the "Speakers" section: Looks great, just some issues with the chronology.

1) I think if you move this sentence to the end of that paragraph it will really help: A majority of choles live in rural areas, farming corn, beans and raising livestock, primarily chickens and turkeys.

For the Phonology section: 1)When it says there's a sixth vowel in Ch'ol that distinguishes it from other Mayan languages, were you able to find the name of that vowel? I think it would be valuable to put it there for those that speak other Mayan languages or are interested, to know what it is called or what it sounds like.

2) When it says "Their are twenty consonants." "Their" should be "There" instead.

3) There are also two sections called morphology and phonology but they say the same information. I assume you posted it twice on accident! :)

Hello, I'm GorillaWarfare. I noticed that in this edit to Ch’ol language, you removed content without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, the removed content has been restored. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. GorillaWarfare (talk) 18:26, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
