Heygate

I got it from "The Worst of Cricket" by Nigel Henderson. The story goes that he was timed out because he was suffering from rheumatism, so he may have been put down as "retired hurt". However, I've heard from a few very knowledgable people I know, so I'm inclined to believe it - Myshkin.

Virtual Scoring

Hello, Sam. It's probably not widely used except by a handful of statisticians who are interested in early cricket. I'm not surprised it isn't on the internet though it might be mentioned somewhere under a different name. I've included it here to give it some airtime, as it were. I believe, but I'm not certain, that it originated in the ACS&H and was once the subject of an article in their quarterly journal. I remember talking to someone about the method many years ago and he referred to it as "relative scoring" whereas I call it "virtual". "adding section title again for consistency on transcluded pages" seems wrong to me

Hi, I noticed that you re-inserted an initial third-level heading, which is the same as the title of the page into Lancashire v Middlesex 18 September 2005. I think this is wrong - either the article should stand alone as a properly formatted article or it should be directly included in another article and not in its own article, or be transcluded from a subpage of another article. Sports page articles

Hi Sam, your interest in fleshing out the Cricket-related articles is appreciated but I'm not sure about the relevance of including descriptions of various matches played unless they were truely interesting for non-cricket readers. Vandal Edits

I'm sorry if I'm throwing the baby out with the bathwater, Commander, but this user (IPs usually 210.*) has a history of repeated, malicious vandalism across a number of articles. Continually assigning actors/actresses to hilariously mismatched projects is a favourite -- Mark Wingett of "The Bill" does the voice of Montgomery Burns, Dan Ackroyd appeared in "Dallas", etc. Trying to sneak in references to New Zealand where they don't belong is another one. I understand that his edits to cricketing pages are usually valid -- but the fact that he delights in spreading deliberate misinformation makes me think that reverting first and asking questions later, or not at all, is prudent in this case. It's hard to credit any contributinos by someone who behaves in such a deliberately destructive manner in most of his changes. Do you think there's a better way we could handle this problem? Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Sam Vimes/Archive2, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. A spam list is maintained by Redwolf24 to keep members up to date; you might want to consider adding your name to the list. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Essjay, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of myself, Flcelloguy, Ryan Norton, and Acetic Acid. Transclusion of cricket match articles

Hi Sam. I just closed out a cricket AFD, and poked around quite a bit to write an informed close. I must say I was quite astonished to find that the individual match articles are being transcluded, not substed, to the larger team and tournament articles. Many of them have been since August. As you know this is a great load on the servers. There is no earthly reason that I can see for this to continue, as the information is identical. Do you think a group of cricket editors could get around to substing (very) soon? I would do it myself were I not pressed for time. Please give this some urgent consideration (I'm approaching you because I don't know many WP cricket editors, but seem to recollect that you are prominent in WP Cricket). If the match articles need to be amended later, these edits can always be done in the regular way and copy pasted elsewhere as necessary, as everyone else edits their articles. Re: NPOV check

You've caught on to exactly what I was referring to: the copyedits in that diff are fantastic. You've managed to get rid of just about all of the editorialising and bias without harming the article. While it doesn't appear to have been necessary there, if that sort of thing is needed to really capture a moment, it can still be achieved by quoting some cricket commentator so that it's them making the assertion, not us. This is just a petition for you to reconsider your vote on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of results of the England national rugby league team.

While it would be a good thing if all the analysis that was discussed were done, frankly, I can't see that it ever will be.

Leaving this list in place is an open invitation for lots of other analysis free lists of every sporting result known to mankind. Even for a devoted cricket fan such as yourself there must be some limit.

Namibian cricketers

I've edited up the list of Namibian cricketers, such as Melt van Schoor (see the bottom of the list of links to Namibia here and on the Namibian section of my list of cricketers who want articles, most of which now have, and I'm progressing on the others as we speak). However, the categories are currently not playing nice, so it is meant to be working, just not at the moment. Just letting you know that it should function if it were working. Regarding date standardization

The WikiProject seems to be inconsistent in the naming of its dates... well, but then again, so is the rest of Wikipedia... But as a project, some kind of consistancy naming should be picked. Ian has pointed out that dates listed like South African cricket season (1888) is non-preferred... meaning that 2005 English cricket season (1-14 June) would likely be non-preferred as well. Seeing as you are picking how to name your categories in regards to a date range, shouldn't some naming consistency be address? --AllyUnion (talk) 18:18, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Admittedly this is "dates" instead of "years", but that's splitting hairs. I'm definitely opposed to making it 1-14 June 2005 English cricket season - that's patently nonsensical, since a season lasts much longer than 14 days. I think the current name signifies that the the 1-14 June pages are extensions of the 2005 English cricket season page in itself, which is just a short season wrap-up for people who need that. I wouldn't object terribly to 2005 English cricket season from 1 to 14 June 2005, though... Sam Vimes 18:43, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi Sam, I'm always happy to help out with monkey work like adding infoboxes to articles (especially when it adds to one of our rapidly improving areas of coverage). Missing cricketers

Hello again Sam,

I'm making another list for Ian of cricket articles that aren't at List of cricketers or List of cricket topics. And while doing this, I noticed that you've removed some articles from User:CricketBot/missing cricketers which you haven't added to List of cricketers, and I'm trying to understand whether this was an oversight, or whether there was a reason for it. Aaron Bird and Billy Spiller were the first two I noticed, but there may be others.

Cricket captaincy succession boxes

What is the convention used for putting people into the right order when talking of the succession line of cricket captains. I have noticed that people have sometimes put those boxes with Adam Gilchrist between Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, even though Gilchrist was only a temporary replacement for injury/illness on one off games, and if this were the case there would be about 10 one-off boxes where he filled in etc. The same goes for Shane Warne as ODI captain. In this case, this would imply, eg, that Virender Sehwag should also have a box as he was captain for 1 game when Rahul Dravid pulled a hammy. Olympics 2006

Also thanks for your appreciation for the 2006 Winter Olympics work. I come at this a bit late - someone/many have done much work all ready. I will take note of your comments, purhaps if you put in some of what you intent say on the Cross sountry skiing page and I will take the style across others I work on. I am striving for a common style with allowances for full infomation, so of the older medals table didn't allow for "times/scores/points" etc. Just a question, are you following the FIS world cup competition so far this year? My interests, in order of interest are, Alpine, Nordic, Snowboarding (more into speed events rather than artistic - but watch a bit of Half Pipe). UK Channel 4 covers the FIS circuit on three seperate evenings for the video player get plenty of use. During summer months the interest is in Motorsport. I have to leave off for a few days now, Christmas and all that! However I am getting the feeling that the Olympic Speed skating, & Short track speed skating needs a bit of resolution, I suspect the Short track actually did start before 2002 but I have now no time to check out the details and sort out the jumble, project for after the holiday! I'm interested to know more about how you know so much about English cricket. I live in England and, among other things, am a member at Worcestershire, a Qualified umpire, and will be a member at the MCC in one years' time, all that and I'm still the same age as you! Hi Sam, good guess with the Wisden thing although not right (although coudl well be right!). I orginially used Wisden14 for everything on the internet, due to at the time being 14 and liking Wisdens (and nobody else had used that name for used IDs on websites!). Well the Wisden17 is reference to my age,17 and the Wisden theme, although I probably have 17 Wisdens, I haven't actually counted. I do have a hell of a lot of books on cricket though, a lot bought very cheaply off Ebay. I've got hundreds of them. I'm particular interested in Cricket Stats. and Law. Have you heard of the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians, it may be the sort of thing you would like to join. From the sounds of it you haven't been to many first class games. Here's an offer: as I said I should be a member (well an associate member) at the MCC next year, so in time for the 2007 season. What that means is that I'll be able to take visitors into the pavillion during games and into the members' seating. Your welcome to come over to Lords for a Test Match and watch it from the comfort of the pavillion if you would like. As I said I can't do that until 2007 season, but I should still be on Wiki at that time, and from the sounds of it you would really enjoy seeing a live international.

One question about Wiki: do people generally e-mail other people or just use their talk pages. I mean I generally prefer using e-mail, but I don't mind?

Oh thanks for the link to the verification site. I was doing some editing on the Umpires' Page and had to keep resisting the urge to just put Law references every 5 minutes, as I am not of the opinion thatthat is what that page needs.

Ofcourse I can help. O.v.b. stands for onder voorbehoud, which means provisional. We can send a maximum of 10 speed skaters to the Olympics, but about 12 or 13 have qualified. It depends on the teams per distance who gets sent to the Games and who doesn't. I've found the qualification criteria at the site of the Dutch speed skating association [1]. What it boils down to is this:

• At the world sprint speed skating championships, Sanne van der Star has to be in the top 16 over the two 500m's. These were held last weekend, and I don't know whether she qualified. If she hasn't, she can still qualify at the World Cup race in Collalbo next weekend.
• Wieteke Cramer would have qualified for the Olympics if she had finished in the top 10 on the 1500m at the European Championships in Hamar. She became 8th, but because Barbara de Loor has won a skate-off against Paulien van Deutekom, De Loor will be going to Turin.
• Marieke Wijsman and Frouke Oonk will do a skate-off at the 500m during the Dutch sprint speed skating championships. The result only matters if two out of three nominated skaters (De Loor, Van Der Star and Cramer) don't qualify. If Wijsman wins, she will have to show some good results in the races to come. If Oonk wins, she will have to reach the qualification limit of 39.50. The skate-off has been held, but I don't know who won.
• Annette Gerritsen will have to show some good results on the 1000m to qualify.
• Gerard van Velde and Jacques de Koning raced a skate-off over two 500m's. If Van Velde had won, he would have qualified for the Games. De Koning won, and he will now have to show some good results in the races to come in order to be sent to Turin.
• Simon Kuipers and Rhian Ket will race a skate-off for the 1500m. The winner will go to Turin.

That's probably why it went shite for us in Hamar. Our skaters have to qualify for qualification races for the World Cup, the European Championship, the World Championship and the Olympics, and these are qualification races for each other. Add to that the sponsor obligations etc., and you'll get an idea why they can't perform anymore. Peter Mueller has called it overkill, and I believe he's right. About the link you provided: it is very useful. It says that she didn't impress on the final 1000m, but that she had already achieved her victory on the 500m's by qualifying for the Olympics. I've found some more on the Dutch delegation for the Olympics: the skate-off between Wijsman and Oonk on the 500m was won by Wijsman. She depended on Cramer, Van der Star and De Loor: if two of these three hadn't qualified for the Olympics, she would have gone to Turin. Since De Loor and Van der Star have qualified, the Dutch speed skating association will forfeit the fourth place on the women's 500m (which Wijsman would have gotten), because more than 10 women would otherwise have gone to the Olympics, which is not allowed. And because Van der Star has qualified for the Olympics last weekend (as your link said), Cramer won't be going to Turin either. Only two places are still up for grabs: the fourth ticket on the men's 500m (Jacques de Koning is the only nominee) and the fourth ticket on the men's 1500m (Rhian Ket or Simon Kuipers). I think I already know what happened: I saw the error on a Wikipedia mirror, and used the link from there to the article, but it linked to the old version that they had copied rather than the current one. I then corrected that old version, causing me to unintendedly revert all subsequent edits. When I edited Australia at the 2006 Winter Olympics to reflect the official announcement of the team, I thought that I may as well lay it out so that it's ready to add results (as some less bold people may be frightened to add results if it means changing the layout). I see you just removed the 1500 m from Erben Wennemars at Netherlands at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Wennemars will skate the 1500m. His selection was not dependent on Sven Kramer. We've got four places at the 1500 m, and they will be filled by Bos, Kramer, Kuipers and Wennemars. A news flash of the Dutch speed skating association says: "Op de 1500 meter rijden voor Nederland in Turijn verder Jan Bos, Erben Wennemars en Sven Kramer", which translates as "Jan Bos, Erben Wennemars and Sven Kramer will also represent the Netherlands at the 1500 m in Turin." An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Ski jumping at the 1984 Winter Olympics

Perhaps I can enlist your help - I have been spending some time trying to standardise the winter olympics layout (still much to do). Example above.

I have been getting persistent problems with the user User:85.165.214.203 and his continual edits which are undescribed, unsigned, and often revert work being done on layout. His most persistent change is to take the IOC codes and expand them out to the full country name. Now that I don't mind if he would at least show he intended to do a sensible comprehensive job. However he will not talk to me, despite repeated attempts at communication with him.

Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Stress Alerts The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them. Note from the editor Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

Barnstar Brigade The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date: "Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. Hi Sam. I just dropped by into the page for the World Short Course Swimming Championships and saw that you had been editing there. I wonder if you had a continuing wikipedia interest in swimming, because if so, it may be of use try and setup a wikiproject for it. At the moment, I know that User:JP06035 has a regular interest; also User:Darius Dhlomo and User:Attilios also regularly contribute, but they don't appear to be particularly interactive, from my experiences, anyway.
