{{Help me}}

The links on this sandbox page have the parameter &tour=studentsandbox, which should launch a guided tour when used. Putting the url into the browser directly works, but when I click on the links, the tour parameter gets stripped out of the url. Why is that happening, and how can I make it not happen?--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 16:51, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that the Special:MyPage part is causing this glitch. If you paste the link containing special:mypage in the browser it will exhibit the same behavior as clicking the link does. Similarly, if you replace the link with a username both clicking and pasting the link in a browser works.
I added a variety on your userpage that uses {{revisionuser}} instead of the special page and based on what i can test this seems to work. When logged in it will forward me to a user sandbox for Excirial while loading the templates and starting the course tutorial. If i log out and use the link as an IP editor it will do the same - except that the link will forward me to a sandbox for my IP address.
As a sidenote: The "You're almost finished" overlay seems to obscure the edit summary editbox. I think that may be somewhat undesirable since i cannot see the summary i just left.Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 21:42, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Scratch that answer - i just recalled that {{revisionuser}} only works correctly when a page is in edit or preview mode - otherwise it will just display the last saved revision user. Honestly i have no idea how to fix it in that case - both pasting the link in the browser and clicking it exhibit the same issue in case special:mypage is used and i know no other method to retrieve the username. Ill reopen the question, perhaps someone else has an idea. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 21:53, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have an answer, but a suggestion: post a question at WP:VPT pointing to this page - a lot of gurus hang out there. JohnCD (talk) 23:42, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Excirial identified the issue. It is a simple code change to the GuidedTour extension. Superm401 - Talk 06:08, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is definitely something odd going on. I use IE9, and I've tried this with compatibility view both on and off. It doesn't matter whether I click on the button, or click on the link, or copy-paste the url into the browser url field, I still get the same result. The result I get is that I am whisked away to my /sandbox edit page, and the student tour begins with the "Preview" box. If I'm not mistaken, there should be at least two boxes before that. And the really odd part is that when I first opened this edit screen to let you know, that "Preview" box was there telling me to preview my edit and then to be sure to press the Save page button. I clicked the little blue "Okay" button and vanished it. At my rather low level of expertise, I don't how to fix this, and if I were to hazard a guess I'd say that there's something squirrelly going on with the student tour. When you get that to start with the very first box, the one that suggests edits to try, then it would be fixed. – PAINE ELLSWORTH C L I M A X ! 04:10, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't tested in IE. But I believe what's happening is that it's remembering your current step from your prior testing. This is intentional so you don't lose your place. Superm401 - Talk 06:08, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I see that now. I tried clearance of the browser cache and a restart of the browser, but the "Preview" box was still the start box. How is it reset? Even the ?action=purge didn't work. – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 16:21, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your contributions, User:Joseph Wright of Derby. I look forward to seeing what you can do with the air pump article.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 15:24, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
