Cadfael a Stub?

Hi Sadads,

I think you may have gone overboard on the 'stub' tags. Cadfael is a 34kb page with 22 sections. It does need an overhaul, it's true, but it really isn't a stub. I will revert. Best wishes Spanglej (talk) 17:29, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Why was it assessed as a stub then? (See history), I am only working with articles assessed as stubs, its the responsibility of authors to keep tabs on what their article is assessed as. Your issue allows me to better identify what article is misassessed. Sadads (talk) 18:10, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Hmm. I suspect that many, if not most, WP article assessments are not kept up to date. And yes, we should keep better tabs. As I say, Cadfael is in need of work. Hi Sadads. A Thousand Splendid Suns and Methuselah's Children, A House for Mr Biswas, A History of the World in 10½ Chapters aren't stubs. Also A Caribbean Mystery, A Month in the Country (novel) and A Murder is Announced. Women in Love was written by D. H. Lawrence who was English, it's not an American novel. These I changed the tag on.

I will cease with the stub tagging for right now, but the American novels category still needs lots of work, so soon as I identify what went wrong with the D.H. I appreciate that you've taken on what must be a mammoth job, but common sense is dictating that some of these articles are not stubs. Devil May Care, and Where Eagles Dare are just two.

For Where Eagles Dare you even made some typo corrections[2], so you must have given the article more than a passing glance.

You keep using that tag ... I do not think it means what you think it means

Based on accumulated user comments, as well as my familiarity with an entry you recently tagged as a stub, I don't think you understand what a stub is. I'll just weigh in that your flagging Bridge of Birds as a stub is mystifying. I'll be commenting in the talk section of that entry to see what the consensus is for removing the stub designation. For the record, that entry has an extensive info box, a plot summary, numerous external citations referencing reviews, an image of the cover, etc. Please consider reviewing the definition of stub before continuing to flag articles as stubs. --Quartermaster (talk) 13:40, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Actually, you had it right the first time, Quartermaster. Sadads did add a stub tag to Bridge of Birds, the next editor merely made it a more specific stub. Unfortunately all of them are already assessed as such, so I am just tagging what is assessed, and its good I am doing so, because I have been able to reassess a number of articles which aren't stubs and have found a number that should remain tagged, which were not. It's a matter of syncing the two stub categories Category:Novel stubs and Category:Stub-Class novel articles both of which are seriously out of date. You might also clarify the issue in the AWB program so that instead of referring people to your talk page when they disagree, the edit-explanation tag refers them to the book's talk page, where the project assessments are. I bet a lot of folks don't think to check the project assessments, and hence they come to you first instead of re-examining the page in question. Add me to the list of editors who have questions about your assessments. On the talk page of the article 'A Conspiracy of Paper', I removed the 'stub' assessment after importing the wikiproject novel template and completing as much of it as possible. You came back through and again assessed it as a stub. I didn't give the article a new assessment myself because I haven't done that before and wasn't sure I completely understand the process. I have, however, seen the article class assessment criteria. Based only on those criteria, I would rate 'A Conspiracy of Paper' several levels above 'stub'. What criteria do you use? Wonderland books

I find your edits to be annoying. Why do you think that "British Fantasy novel" is better than "Fantasy novel"? An author may be British or American or whatnot. A book might be set in Britain or on Mars. Or a publisher might be in one country or another.

See discussion at Wikipedia talk:Novels, about the only thing we can agree on right now is that date and nationality of the work are the only thing that can be accurately determined. Genre is largely arbitrary and has serious repercussion in Genre theory, but in general it is more important that the origination of the work be identified.

For the orphan tag, I am adding those now and in several months, after I finish up several of the major tasks I am working on right now, I will start making Navboxes for authors of novels that are orphans. That way we can increase traffic to these articles, which will in turn increase accuracy and breadth of the articles. I am sorry that I annoyed you, Sadads (talk) 00:01, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

What does "origination of a work" mean? that it was written in a country? That it was published in a country? That it was written by a citizen of a country? That it is about a country? What is "the nationality of a work" and how is this determined?

All the orphan tag says is "this article is crappy because many other articles do not link to it". So what? Maybe there aren't more than two relevant articles. What's wrong with that? Did you read the article Alice's Adventures in Wonderland retold in words of one syllable? Or did you just tag it? There is enough tagging and navbox bloat on the Wikipedia already. There should be a navbox at the bottom of the page that links to all "Wonderland" books, reductions, and other media related to Lewis Carrolls world, which includes this article. Earthsea

Yes, it's technically correct to tag 'The Farthest Shore as an American fantasy novel: Le Guin is American. But taking off "fantasy novels" seems unhelpful: from the viewpoint of most readers, "fantasy novels" is more relevant than her nationality. (That's even aside from Le Guin having identified herself specifically as a Western American writer; her sense of place has, I think, more to do with that coast than with national borders.) I have no problem with it having both tags, but if it can have only one, I'm going to revert to the more general unless there's something important I'm overlooking here.Vicki Rosenzweig (talk) 00:54, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Redundant sorting by nationality

On August 15 you added the category "American novels" to three Nero Wolfe books — The Golden Spiders, Too Many Cooks and Where There's a Will — written by Rex Stout. These, along with the other Nero Wolfe novels, have already been subcategorized as American novels via Category:Nero Wolfe novels by Rex Stout and the Category:Novels by Rex Stout to which it belongs. The Whiskey Rebels

I recently spent some time expanding this article, using the Wikiproject: Novels template as a guide. I didn't use all of the sections in the template; some didn't seem appropriate for this novel. When I finished, I removed the stub tag. Then today I saw that you replaced the tag, using AWB. I don't know what criteria AWB uses, but it apparently didn't notice the recent work. Placing a tag is not a big deal, but I would caution you against doing wholesale edits with AWB. It doesn't seem very discriminating. WCCasey (talk) 01:54, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi, please check that you are not adding more heat than light by your editing. I'm out of this - only came across it because one article on my watch list was inappropriately tagged. As I understand it you are copying information from an inaccurate list onto articles (via a stub tag) so as to make other editors tell you if the original list is wrong. That's somewhat pushy, imo. It's not actually a bot, I have to manually screen each edit and make some changes. I encountered your page because it had some old urls related to the United States Army Center of Military History. I make changes manually and clean up some parts of the page automatically, like I did with those links. You need a little bit of experience and then permission to use the tool, Sadads (talk)

Thanks for the talk page note about Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 11. Getting me on short notice can be a bit challenging by any mode of contact, especially recently when I have been travelling a lot. Haha, Wikipedia is very bizarre and unique, I have never encountered an experience like it. Task force parameter on Milhist banner

Hi, Sadads, thanks for your recent work assessing articles for the Milhist project. I appreciate your help. Can I ask a favour, though? When you add the US task force to articles please make sure that the mark up coding is exactly right (it should be "|US=yes" or "|US=y", rather than "|us = yes"). For some reason the coding for task forces is case sensitive, so some of the task forces you've added haven't displayed correctly and hence the article has remained in the category of articles without a task force. For an example of how I've changed one, please see this diff: [3]. Anyway, thanks very much with your help adding the task forces. Its a pretty boring job, I know. Cheers. The article indicates that this exhibition is the first time in a quarter century that Tutankhamun artifacts are part of a traveling exhibition. Welcoming people to wikiproject novels

I'm wondering if it would be useful just to give a few short guidelines when you welcome people. I have just, sadly, had to revert someone you recently welcomed who added the description from the book jacket to Dust of Dreams, which keeps getting well-meaning people copying material from Amazon, etc and adding it. Certainly, unfortunately it is rare that we get new members, and we aren't very active right now. I think we need to put more energy into finding members and making the ones we have more active, than on a greeting info, such as a welcome template for Novels or people writing about fiction. Sorry about not getting to you sooner, but my Internet (and phone) suddenly died on me. Anyways, thank you, I appreciate your effort in reviewing the article. I actually was quite impressed with your in-depth-ness, and didn't mind the nit-pickiness. The only thing was that you may want to consider organizing the comments using 3rd and 4th level headers rather than using the semicolon to create headers, as I found it a bit tedious to scroll to the top of the section to reply to a comment. Just a quick note: when passing, look to see if the page has an {{ArticleHistory}} template. If so, add the pass to there (I did it this time). Also, remember to add the reviewed revision (oldid), the version of the article that was passed as a GA. [6] is the version for the article. Look at the URL, and you'll see 9 digits at the end of it. That's what you need to add to the "oldid=" parameter, whether it be in the articlehistory template or the regular GA template. That way, the article isn't added to the Category:Good articles without an oldid backlog (which I've been trying to help clear from its peak of 208 or so articles). Archpoet

Hi Sadads. I just wanted to explain my using the expression "an obvious reference" in the Archpoet article to you who's responsible for going through Wikipedia and changing this for all articles. I take it you don't read the articles before editing them, but seeing the number of edits needed to be done, it's completely understandable.

Now, in the context of the article itself, the "obvious" takes its full meaning when you see it from the perspective of 12th century educated men and women who knew Latin very well and the Bible just as much, and who formed the intended audience of the Archpoet's compositions. Your correction and my explaining made me realize, as I'm writing, that maybe I should have mentioned this and made it clear in the article. So, instead of writing "an obvious reference to the Scripture", and if I really would have wanted to keep the "obvious" expression, "an obvious reference to the Scripture for the educated people of the time" would have been more precise. Could that have saved the "obvious"? I don't know, but I'll modify the article to include this small correction which sheds some needed light.

Also, it's good that you didn't put the OR template, because I would have removed it, since the article contains no "original research" per se: I went through everything myself, reading hundred of pages of various books and scholarly articles so as to make the Archpoet article as complete, neutral and referenced as possible. Using "obvious reference" in an article does not automatically warrant the judgment that the article contains original research; I think it's unfair to judge hundreds or thousands of words solely on two. That's just my two cents. Thanks for taking care.

Sorry, obvious in and of itself forces the author's point of view, as pointed out in the conversation at this conversation at the Village pump, and in many cases it was used in the context of pop culture sections which tend to be stock full of OR. I was careful only to add the OR templates if the line was unreferenced (which you article clearly was not). I only added inline OR templates not full article OR templates, sorry if that confused you. Their were only about 300 cases of this, and almost every one that I caught had POV pushing, Sadads (talk) 19:58, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Please note that my comment was written after reading the said conversation, which is precisely why I took the trouble of justifying this specific use of "obvious" since it seemed to diverge from what the conversation was directly aiming at. Editing Collisions

Hi, Sadads. It looks like 4 people were simultaneously working on the Huffstickler article (including you). Felicia222, the main author of the article was very frustrated. She saw many of her references disappear when ClamDip commented them out. Apparently, she doesn't know about that trick, and she's already doing a lot of work figuring out how to do refs in WP. She reverted the article and started over again fixing the References. I noticed you also commented out her unused references. I pointed out the method and rationale for "commenting out" on the Huffstickler Facebook page, hoping she figures out what was happening. We both struggled to learn Wikipedia to get the article past the stub stage last fall. Felicia222 doesn't have a User Page, and I don't have any other contact info for her outside of Facebook at the moment. She says (on FB) that she's going to do edits offline and then upload them, which might be a little less stressful for her.

Question: is there a way to tell that more than one person is working on an article at the same time?Taoboy49 (talk) 19:26, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to see if someone else is editing. However, if you are working with a team, you might wish to {[tl|In use}} at the top of the page,to warn people that you are editing, that way they can try to avoid edit conflicts, Sadads (talk) 20:05, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Just wanted to say thanks for tweaking that link and adding the extra category on Ten Thousand a-Year. I don't know many specific categories - in fact, when I threw the one pointing to 'Novels' in there, it was a complete shot in the dark as to whether it even existed (I figured it was that or 'Books'). The only other concern I had in creating the article was the formatting of capital letters in the title. Frankly, I don't much care for it as is, but it's a proper name and seemed to be how most of the references I could find referred to it, so...it is what it is.
Anyhow, I just wanted to say thanks for adding a little polish to an otherwise obscure subject.

You tagged a description of the temporal sequence of this song as WP:OR [7]. Save for the difference in media, this description is no different than any other even-handed summary of a cited text. Is it somehow objectively unverifiable with respect to the (implicitly) cited text, that is, the song itself? That is after all the sine qua non of academic citation. Orphan tag

I recommend not putting the orphan tag on articles unless there are no articles at all that link to it. In the case of many of the Medal of Honor recipients its true that in many cases there are few articles but they all have at least a couple and therefore adding the orphan tag in my opinion just clutters up the article. --Kumioko (talk) 12:06, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

I think of it in this way, if their are a bunch of orphaned articles in a cluster, then it is a good reason to create a navbox. If you notice that the Medal of Honor recipients from one war are orphaned, then create a navbox and at the very least, that can interlink amongst each other and share their traffic. Umm, navboxs are good for certain things and could be useful for some recipients but typically the articles are associated by the lists of recipients and by categories. Re your comments

Per your "@NickCT It's about the same thing as is happening in #3" in Talk:Ahmed_Yassin; I wanted to follow up with you, just to get a better sense of your thoughts.

I strikes me that Yassin looks quite sickly in image 1. His left hand looks unaturally swollen, and his eyes seem crossed. He's also wearing somekind of odd blanket. While he still looks like an invalid in #3, he appears somewhat more stately.

Do you think I'm off-base here? Can you see what I'm talking about?

Apologies for pressing this point, I'm just curious that others aren't seeing what seems obvious to me.

Well both 1 and 3 show Yassin with a swollen hand and his eyes slightly askew, but 1 has the obvious advantage of being a little higher res. Also, I think in some ways it appeases those who want him to look a little more elderly wihtout giving him that rediculous look that he has in the current photo. Thanks for your comment and reply, its appreciated. Don't worry I don't feel alone and rejected. (Aaah) However I do feel "adopted" by the British Museum project. The interview contribution not intended as a criticism but I hope a helpful observation. As I look at the SI project (and I can only judge it from your project pages without an air ticket) it is obvious that it has not been the success you hoped .... but I'm not sure what success you have had. I only did a "drive by" contribution. Have there been others that were not so cheeky as to add their hit rate figures to your front page. You did not have "Liam" but you have had lots of articles created which you don't know about (I think/estimate) and the SI (amd the LOC) have encouraged many due to their sign up with Flickr. The US rules on copyright have not been confused as they have been in the UK and you have lots of info in the public domain. Does the SI project know about this? I thought about ignoring the request for an interview as my involvement has been trivial....(but its Kalulu who appears on your front page) I think the SI project need to learn from the BM project .... and I think you are focussing too much on what hasn't happened and not on what you can get off the BM. e.g. steal their web structure - don't mention "Apollo 11" as top hit unless you did something to make that true. Secure Federal File Sharing Act and Mentorship

Greetings Sadads,

I am currently involved in the Politics of Piracy course at the University of California, Berkeley. I am of Junior standing, majoring in History with an emphasis on Twentieth Century Warfare. Out of all the potential mentors for our Public Policy course I chose you (if you approve that is) as it seems like we have much in common based on your description, and I think we will get along and work together well. The article I am interested in expanding (or starting actually) is the Secure Federal File Sharing Act, as I think it pertains to how the United States government will address and interact with file sharing protocol in the future. The article has not yet been created, and I hope by the end of this year it will have evolved into at least a stub. The reference to this act can be found here. What do you think?

I would be glad to help. We can definitely write a good start class from the sources I have found in a google search, but remember, most of the information, except for the summary of the bill, needs to be from reliable secondary sources (see WP:Secondary sources). Make sure that their is a breadth of information available beyond a few news articles (though a start is certainly doable with a couple news articles). Lets start a draft in a new user subpage and do a survey of sources to make sure you are happy with enough information (for information on user subpages see WP:Subpages). I bet we could flesh it out to at least B class by the end of the semester, which may require a little more digging than just internet searches. I will let you do the research and writing, and I can help with formatting, grammar and style, and other general issues.Sadads (talk) 02:53, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

I went through his edit history a good ways and tried to catch the prods, but I wasn't being systematic per se. I scanned at least 200-250 edits back on him. Didn't realize how many there would be until I was a good ways in. Because he used Twinkle it's pretty easy to tell which ones he was prodding. You don't have to manually write a table of contents, they automatically appear unless you write __NOTOC__ on the page, which forces the TOC off the page. For more information see Help:Section#Table of contents (TOC). As for reviewing the article, do you not have an Online Ambassador? I can help, but I currently have a pretty full load and would suggest picking someone from amongst the individuals at Wikipedia:WikiProject United States Public Policy/Ambassadors who don't have very many mentees to work with, Sadads (talk) 16:45, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

I need a little education on building templates. It is time to Split the article Arkansas Army National Guard I have a plan to break it up into sub articles, but I want to keep them associated in a series. I was looking at another article the History of Berlin, which I believe was split in the past. It has a template that announces that the article is a part of a series and list the other articles in the series. You will need to put it in Template space when you do the thing (Template:Arkansas National Guard Series]]). Also, I would try not to have too many red links on templates. For an explanation of navboxes and series templates see Wikipedia:Navboxes. Otherwise you have the right concept. I think learning basic templates is more about trying to understand ones that already exist and modifying not really creating whole new ones. Sadads (talk) 16:47, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Cognoscenti (comics)

I have removed the proposed deletion tag you placed on Cognoscenti (comics), as the article was discussed at AfD on 4 October 2008 and closed with no consensus, thereby making it ineligible for prod. Compliance with policy/procedure was the only reason I did this; I have no prejudice against opening another AfD.

Template:Landry

Hi, Sadads. I see that you are the creator of the {{Landry}} navigation box. I recently discovered an unused navbox for all of V.C. Andrews' novels (here), which I have added to the relevant articles. For the Landry series, this means there are now two redundant navboxes on the articles. Since the other template is more comprehensive, I'm wondering if you would be open to having the Landry template deleted in favor of the other one? Let me know what you think.
