SLV Response

[edit]

HI Melcous, thank you very much for your messages and correspondence with me. I did read through the guidelines and that is why I acknowledged my connection with the PCU and its project, rePhotoSA. Also, I only used information that is available online (and citable). I would also like to say that I am not a paid contributor and am not contributing articles as part of my job description, and so I did not intend the articles to be an advertisement (I used the Animal Demography Unit's page as a template and worked from there, and so I hope the articles were written appropriately). I saw that were pages written on the Animal Demography Unit (and the Unit's projects, such as SABAP) and the Percy Fitzpatrick Institute at UCT but not on the PCU, and so I wanted to fill the gap. In future, I would like to write articles on the Leslie Hill Succulent Karoo Trust and the town of Paulshoek (and it's projects), both of which are of social and ecological importance in SA - would these be relevant? Will the articles that I created still go for review at all? Thanks again for taking the time to correspond with me. All the best, Sam

Hi Sam, great, thanks for clarifying your conflict and that you are not being paid.
Yes, the draft you have submitted for review will be looked at and you will receive feedback. A couple of suggestions I can make on it for you now - wikipedia is looking for articles that are referenced to reliable, secondary sources which means sources outside the subject of the article itself. At this stage the four footnotes you have on your draft are all to the project's own website, so do not meet this criteria. You are looking for what others (e.g. books, newspaper articles, journals etc) have written about it to show that it is notable and to verify the content. I would also suggest that the whole section "How to get involved in the project" should be removed as it seems promotional or at least a kind of "how to guide" which is not acceptable. That kind of information belongs on the project's own website, not in an encyclopedia.
Your other two proposed articles sound like they might be useful. As you have done already, the best thing to do is to create a draft so you can work on it over time, you can find the right kind of references, and you can ask for feedback from other editors as you go. Then, once you think it is ready, you can submit it for a formal review.
You might also want to consider doing some more minor editing of exisiting articles in your area of interest first - e.g. fixing any typos, adding little bits of content, adding references etc, as this can be a good way to become familiar with how wikipedia works. There are plenty of help pages too, such as those I have linked to in blue here.
Finally, when you leave a message for another editor here or on an article talk page or user talk page, please 'sign" your post by adding four tildes (~ this symbol) at the end - this will automatically add the time and date stamp as well as a link to your talk page. Cheers, Melcous (talk) 12:36, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Melcous, thank you very much again for the information. I have removed the 'How to Get Involved' bit on rePhotoSA now. I will have to think about the PCU page because there aren't very many published sources on the Unit. I did, however, use the PCU 5-year review (which is published on the PCU website), which is externally reviewed by one international and two local reviewers. Once signed, the document is published on our website - surely this should be okay to use as it has been reviewed? Also, I see that certain sections of various pages where I added a link to rePhotoSA, have been removed i.e. on the ADU and rephotography pages? In addition, the content boxes on the rePhotoSA page as well as on the ADU page are missing? Did someone remove these too? How do I see who removed them? I will definitely take your advice on editing other pages first! In future, I would like to add a section on repeat photography and citizen science to the rephotography page as there are several citizen science repeat photography projects around the world (these were also removed from this page by someone?), including rePhotoSA, which is the only one in Africa :) I will start looking for published sources on this and get going with this. Thanks again, SLVenter (talk) 07:55, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
