Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Heymonicakim. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:00, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In what world would I have a conflict of interest because I'm trying to balance an article that was clearly written by someone with an axe to grind? The article in question is one of the most unbalanced and unsourced articles I've read on Wikipedia in awhile and goes against the Living Person of Interst policies. I am suggesting changes that provide balance to an article that is clearly an attempted hit piece. Heymonicakim (talk) 21:05, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that might depend on how you became aware of the perceived problem in the first place. Did someone inform you about it? ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:36, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I became aware of it because I saw it with my own eyes and am trying to correct the issue. Heymonicakim (talk) 21:44, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, so you opened your browser today, with "Random Article" from Wikipedia being your starting page, and this article randomly appeared on your screen, making you see the problem with your own eyes. Do you see what I'm actually asking for? ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:45, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see now, you are attempting to harass me because you are upset about my edit suggestions. I request you move on to someone else now. Heymonicakim (talk) 21:49, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, no. Sorry, I'm not trying to harass you, but I understand the impression and won't continue asking. What I saw is as follows: A number of new editors suddenly jump into editing the article, the article is semi-protected to prevent further edits from very new users, multiple accounts barely meeting the editing criteria (>4 days, >10 edits) appear making the same changes, the page is fully protected, and yet another new account appears, created two hours ago solely for the purpose of editing about this topic, and makes similar requests as the others did before. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:52, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I only have this one account, I am not in contact with anyone else editing. I also don't see anyone else suggesting similar edits to mine in the Talk page or History other than the Lede, but I assume that is because it is so particularly egregious. However, it's unsurprising to me if people are suggesting similar edits because the article, as it stands. is so lacking in neutrality or balance. I would appreciate if you would move on from accusations as you said you would though. Heymonicakim (talk) 21:59, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'm sorry. My assumption was that the article subject, or someone close to them, had asked fans to "have a look at" (or more directly perhaps even "correct"/"improve") the article, or that an upset fan had asked for assistance on social media. As this is clearly not the case, I hope you can forgive me for the initial impression, and you may like to remove all of these unnecessary messages from your talk page. You may generally always do so (WP:UP#CMT describes very few exceptions, and this isn't one of them). Sorry again and thanks for joining. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:14, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I should probably start by explaining how I became aware of the article. Through a protection request at WP:RFPP, that is. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:46, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, Heymonicakim, welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions. Your editing pattern indicates that you may be using multiple accounts or coordinating editing with people outside Wikipedia. Our policy on multiple accounts usually does not allow this, and users who misuse multiple accounts may be blocked from editing. If you operate multiple accounts directly or with the help of another person, please disclose these connections. Thank you. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:01, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have a single account. Heymonicakim (talk) 21:05, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification; I'm mostly concerned about coordinated editing, which we call meatpuppetry. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:36, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also not coordinating with anyone? But I understand if there are a lot of people trying to offer balance if they see an article that's clearly breaking wikipedia's own policies about neutrality, especially when they're a public figure. Heymonicakim (talk) 21:43, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
While it's not entirely clear if the current content is actually a policy violation (talk page discussion currently ongoing about this), that's a reasonable concern to have. Please disregard my initial warning. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:18, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
