Hello, Rob Church! Thanks for the kind words. As for Mind Benders, all you have to do is to click the "Answer this question" link below each question, type in a subject heading (something like "Rob's answer"), and type your answer and explanation in. Right now, all but two questions have been answered correctly, so when you submit your answer, you will automatically be able to view the correct response (other people's answers). Welcome to Wikipedia, and happy editing! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 17:47, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the barnstar! Don't worry, I moved it from my user page to talk page. You didn't mess up anything- my user page is actually quite sloppy, and I've been meaning to reorganize it for quite a while. Anyways, just a quick favor to ask of you- could you sign with the four tildes ( ~~~~ ) on the barnstar on the talk page? Thanks a lot! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 18:11, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

Please do no vandalise the Natalee Holloway page. This is your official warning. The next time you do it, you will be permabanned. (Unsigned comment by BunkyBoopy.

Reversion and revulsion

Thanks for nabbing the page vandal. I instituted a 2 hr block on him (the homophobia suggests a male vandal) because he's using an AOL IP, and we get into a world of pain if we block for long on any of those. Geogre 21:25, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have signed the RfAr myself and made some very minor changes to wording. Since the changes were to the section you signed, I am bringing them to your attention so that you may remove them if you feel they change the meaning of the statement in such a way that it no longer reflects your views. Hi Robchurch, I was not testing Media when you removed it. I was wikifying and reformatting the article and was about to preview the changes, when all of a sudden, it disappeared and I was wondering what happened after I spend a considerate amount of time, trying to get the alignment right. As a matter of fact, new as I am to Wikipedia, I have contributed 5 articles and had edited more than 20 articles so far. Anyway, thanks for your message. PM Poon 05:25, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Rob,

Firstly, may I thank you very much for your generous awards on my talk page - and since you don't have any barnstars yet yourself, I thought I would return the complement!

Barnstars moved to user page.

Knowing one's rouge from one's rogue

Well, you're not an admin (yet), I guess, so I can't quite give you the new award, but I highly recommend it for those administrators who are true Rouge Administrators. The way I figure it, a Rouge Administrator is the sort who oppresses people who can't spell well enough or take enough time in writing articles to proofread what they've done. In other words, I am proud enough to be a Rouge Administrator that I came up with the following badge. Geogre 03:00, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't hate you

Hi, would you please be patient with me read this through? Thanks. ^^;;

I don't hate you. You did something stupid yesterday, imo, true, and yes, I was very angry. I got angrier yet when I considered maybe you'd try the same with Ed Poor.

I'd like to tell you now that I'm not angry at you anymore. I'd like to explain how so. I hope you'll read on, so I can explain why.

Now when you're angry at a person, you shout at them, because you care for them, and you're concerned about their behaviour. At some point you can get so angry you go right past that point, and you grow really really quiet on that person. I don't know why for sure. Maybe it's a natural instinct, so as not to tip them off to your impending revenge or so?

I got really quiet on you for a little while there.

But then Nicholas told me you're still fairly new. That did change matters.

I knew that what you'd done was A Bad Idea, and I was still angry, but less so, and I grew concerned. Like what if I didn't say anything to you, and you'd try something like that again? You might get yourself hurt. And I was still pretty worried if you'd try that kind of stuff on folks like Ed Poor. That, and while I'd come back from "the sharpening of knives", I was still pretty much in "high dudgeon".

So I decided to give you a mighty telling off. To put the "Fear Of God" in you. And by gum, that's what I did. And I hope it DID put the Fear Of God in you. (And that's all I'll say about the matter here, I shan't dredge it up further.) But maybe it put the Fear Of Kim in you too. :-(

The latter is an unintended consequence. :-( I probably said a few things more strongly than I intended to as well.

Anyway: here's some things you should know:

  • I don't hate you. It's always important to tell people that after telling them off, or they might get the wrong idea.
  • I'm not angry at you anymore, I told you off, and that's the end of it.
  • I'm not going to foldspindlemutilate you. Yes I told you that if you'd try something like that again on someone else, that you Might Get Hurt. I told you that so you understand that it's Not A Good Idea. I will never hurt you personally. (Or not any worse than telling you off ,anyway ^^;;)
  • I'm not going to follow you around or examine your edits more closely.
  • I (still) respect you. You're respected in the community, and that's enough for me. :-)

I told you off, and that's the end of it. I don't mind if you're angry or hate me for it, because I think I did the right thing. I hope you're not too angry back at me, but I don't know how I can help it if you are.

Thanks for reading this far.

If you'd like to do a postmortem or debriefing, I reccomend talking with NicholasT or Mindspillage, or someone you respect (and get that person to talk with Nicholas, Mindspillage, and/or me too). If you feel daring, you might even try contacting me on irc again too, I shan't bite your head off (a second time, at least).

Thank you for your time.

Sockpuppet

You left the follow edit comment: "Removed sockpuppet accusation as it is unfounded and placed by Dreamguy who causes hassle for anyone editing Vampire)". This is absolutely false. The charges were fully described and considered substantial by several people who placed the tag there besides myself. And your description of what is happening on the Vampire page is completely false, the only people I cause any "hassle" for (which is really just me trying to follow normal conflict resolution procedures while being attacked by peopple who clearly are not operating in good faith) are ones who do not work toward consensus at all and are trying to make false claims about why certain edits were made in the past... Many of them are clearly linked to sockpuppets (several of which were outright proven by IP trace and later admission of those involved). I think you are simply glimpsing at the situation and then taking the word of a couple of troublemaking editors (many of whom are currently blocked for proven bad behavior elsewhere) as if they had merit instead of taking the time to figure out what's really going on. DreamGuy 23:35, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

You wrote this on my talk page, among other things:
" I suggest that you avoid mindlessly accusing anyone of it "
I suggest you stop characterizing my claims as mindless accusations, as there is very strong evidence. Remember that so far, on every name that I have accused of being a sockpuppet that has been completely followed through and checked, I have been correct 5 out of 5 times that the individuals involved were, in fact, sockpuppets. Please see the User:Gabrielsimon case as well as User:Existentializer and his immediate followup sockpuppet (the spelling of whose name I forget). The User:Pukachu and User:Devilbat cases have many of the exact same signs, and other admins have agreed with me that their actions are suspicious. Perhaps you would like to call them all "mindless" as well? DreamGuy 02:16, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
And speaking of those "mindless accusations" -- David checked User:Pukachu and User:Devilbat and they were, in fact, sockpuppets of User:Existentializer. See [User talk:David Gerard#Sock Puppet Request.] DreamGuy 01:00, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
I am aware of this, having been in the IRC channel at the time it was announced. I maintain that I reacted as I saw fit at the time. I resent the attitude you take when communicating with me, and would urge a slight tone alteration. Congratulations. Rob Church Talk 01:03, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Correct me if I am wrong here, but you inserted yourself into a conflict for which you did not research the issues beforehand (as being throughly discussed on the Administrator's Notceboard Incidents page), assumed I was acting in bad faith, responded uncivilly, continued to respond uncivilly when I pointed out the situation to you, learned that you were completely wrong in every particular, and then not only did not take the initiative to apologize but when the situation wad brought up again maintain that you did nothing wrong? I would suggest that you have more than a few things you need to work on yourself. DreamGuy 02:43, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
OK, this is about to descend into a (polite, if nothing else) flamewar, so I suggest we agree to disagree. I may well have entered into the dispute without checking all the bases, and for that I can only apologise. Fortunately, you were proven correct, and as far as I can tell, the cause for the dispute has been resolved. If there are any further problems I've caused here, do let me know. Miguel de Cervantes Article

Robchurch: I happen to be "66.201.16.24" -- I am not vandalising the page in question; the fact of the matter is that I submitted an article on Cervantes, which I later decided to withdraw. I was intent on deleting all versions of my article found in the "history" page.

User:Robchurch#Jack Black Disambiguation

Hey, thanks, i think i mentioned you [wink] on Talk:Jack Black (disambiguation). [big smile]
--Jerzy·t 21:10, 2005 August 11 (UTC)

_ _ [Sigh] I write like that too often, sorry. Yes, good, absolutely.
_ _ "Mentioning you" meant that you were the tireless relinker that i was waiting for (but believing that they would have to be a bot-master; early in my WP career, i pretty much burned out in the effort to hand re-lk everything that lk'd to Battery.)
_ _ I didn't anticipate yr thoroughness, so i was planning to add the results of my own less rigorous survey (i considered many as, from their titles, obviously meaning him, and visited only the rest, mostly the names of people); my goal was to ensure & document that every article still lk'd to Jack Black as of today could be re-lk'd to the actor by a bot w/o further attention, so only new ones would need inspection. You've brought us, quickly, to the stage of routine maint: anything left (non-articles don't generally count) is easy to spot as new, so getting newcomers unlk'd from the rdr is now light work.
_ _ Sorry i was obtuse.
--Jerzy·t 22:56, 2005 August 11 (UTC)

I noticed you placed a {{Cleanup-date|{{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}} tag on the article above. Just so you know, I'm working my way through List of pinup artists creating articles on all the mid-century artists that don't already have one. In support of that, I use a template in my userspace that, for technical reasons, leaves a small amount of cleanup to be done. I always do the cleanup right away, so if you should happen to see me creating more articles, you probably won't need to do any cleanup if you wait a bit. Of course, if you want to contribute to the effort, I'd love the help. I think I've got about 80 artists to go, give or take... :-)

Please do not automatically assume I was making a VfD nomination in bad faith. In fact, the criteria for deletion clearly state that a hoax article =must= come before VfD, no matter how transparently fraudulent it is. Some administrators might make a long stretch and speedy it as vandalism, but that is really playing outside the rule book. I would suggest you review the criteria for deletion before you take another administrator to task for following procedures.

I refer you to this comment posted by Rossami on the speedy delete talk page: "I understand your concern. I also think that these "jokes" are a form of vandalism and that they harm the Wikipedia. Unfortunately, I think that allowing any admin to speedy-delete them immediately would do even greater harm. Five days on VfD (okay, 10-15 with the backlog) is not too high a price to pay for the articles which we do rescue. The VfD tag itself serves as a very clear notice to any reader who finds the article in the meantime that this is a page not yet to be trusted. Rossami (talk) 02:17, 15 August 2005 (UTC)"[reply]

Denni 01:27, 2005 August 15 (UTC)

  • No problem. I should have added a couple of words to my comment: "...with us". In other words, the author of the article was, well, having a little fun at Wikipedia's expense. But I can see how it could be misinterpreted. I guess your reaction to my comment about "another administrator" means you are not one yourself. I thought you were. Denni 23:04, 2005 August 24 (UTC)

I try to avoid reverting edits that were clearly made in good faith, but in this case there were just too many mistakes. I know reading the entire Wikipedia:Manual of Style or all revisions of the article is a bit much, so I'll try to explain a few things here: The format we use for people who are still alive is (born [full date]), not ([year] - ). The GNU GPL is by far the most frequently used free software license — there's plenty of evidence for that (freshmeat and sourceforge, for starters). The part about "being paid for around half of the speeches he gives" came from RMS himself (here), so that's about as good as a source can get. I'm not sure whether "a.k.a." is good style, but I don't see any evidence that he is "more commonly known as RMS" – as a matter of fact, I'm convinced that's not the case. File Pile, Second Vote for Deletion

FilePile is once more up for deletion. Your input would be appreciated. --tranquileye 12:56:44, 2005-08-26 (UTC)

The last VfD saw an overwhelming number of Delete votes, but the process itself was a train wreck that ended with an admin decision of no consensus. After further discussion and a RfC on the page, there developed a near consensus that the subject was non-notable and unverifiable, and the article was re-nominated. --tranquileye 16:21:38, 2005-08-26 (UTC)

The research was concerning strictly the issue of Macedonia and the users included in the edits. Exact numbers and information were used, all in favor of representing the reality of our expirience.

Hi there. I noticed you edited the newly created Sun-Pat article recently. I would like to thank you for telling me what I was doing in the manner that you did. I have been making alot of mistakes with this site in the past. I guess I'll just have to be more careful next time.

Well, you know, I haven't seen you around often. What types of articles do you edit? (I've only seen you on IRC) --WikiFan04Talk 18:16, 28 Aug 2005 (CDT)

Thermal Power Plant

Above is my note under User twice. Do not know why it did not print my name. Any how I have saved my reedited artcle Part one and saved in the artcle as suggested. Please see whether it has the reqired results in articles. Advise also how to remove the User artcle in my name and also suggest how to save my second PartTwo now. I do not want to meddle doing experiments and waste your precious time as well. Tobacco Worm/Tomatoe Worm

Dear Rob,

Thank you so much for the work you did on "Tobacco Worm". I have since learned that the Tobacco worm and the Tomatoe worm are different species. I have changed the name of the suggested article from "Tobacco Worm" to "Tomatoe Worm" and added a few words from my own knowlege. I see that you are a young man doing good things. God bless you. I am an old man, (87) and trying to keep going. Please dress up "Tomatoe Worm" when you get a chance.

Sincerely Alison Phillips <phillipsacp@comcast.net>

Weasley family

Greetings! I noticed you changed the caption under the image of the Weasley family photo to say that it does not include Charles Weasley. It's been a little while since I've seen that film, so I can't remember the scene in which that photo is shown. But I'm a little confused--there are 9 people in the photo (and nine Weasleys), so if Charles Weasley isn't in it, who is the 9th person? GinaDana 16:47, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry--I made a mistake. I read the edit summary and got confused, without taking the time to actually look at the page edit. Nevermind! GinaDana 16:54, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lara language and other constructed languages

Hi! Since you voted in the VfD on Lara language, I'd like to urge you to check out the Wikipedia:Conlangs/Votes page, where an attempt is made to create general criteria for inclusion of constructed languages. The trouble is that the discussion seems to be dominated by conlang enthusiasts, with a rather limited grasp of the concept of notability, as generally defined on Wikipedia. In my opinion, for a language to be notable it needs to have an impact on the world outside the home of its creator (i.e. having a significant and verifiable number of fluent speakers and/or being the subject of a rather extensive professional discussion, preferrably in printed media). However, the vote might very well end up with any language with X number of words, or even "a unique script"(!), being deemed worthy of a Wikipedia article. If this sounds like a bad idea to you, please take a look at the vote. / Alarm 17:12, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Signature

Rob:

I hope you don't mind I stole your signature template to create mine. I just like its simplicity and functionality... :) Thanks!

Hey, just giving credit when credit is due. :) --Sebastian Kessel Talk 22:04, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome!

Thanks for the kind welcome, Robchurch. As you may have noted from my user: page, I've actually been around Wikipedia for a while, just never particularly active; too many other fish to fry to devote the time that I'd need to to make a heavy-weight contirubtion, so I controbute where I feel I have unique input, which places are few and far between ;-).

Anyway, thanks again;

Thermal Power Station Now I have saved my reedited artcle Part one and saved in the artcle as suggested. Please see whether it has the reqired results in articles. Advise also how to remove the User artcle in my name and also suggest how to save my second PartTwo now. I do not want to meddle doing experiments and waste your precious time as well. Today I have added another article on Deaerator [[4]].I have not seen my name in the article list on Thermal Power Stations so far. Can you please identify where I have gone wrong? Can only bank your help please. Thnking once again. --222.153.156.22 03:27, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I have to learn a lot more as suggested. One point to be seen here is that the article Thermal Power Station now existing gives only the theoretical background and not the actual one in a utility, as mine. However to avoid repetition of title (WIKI indicated no paper exists) I suggest mine to be as UTILITY POWER PLANT (AS EXISTING).Cannot refer to particular Model of any maker because it may mean advertising theirs. I will see how to improve the get up Manual of Style. On deaerator article also it has been commented as stub by somebody else and I shall look into it. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR HELPING ME.
