[edit]

Thanks for Your "Typo fixing". :) NAHID 19:45, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My use of scripts to correct spelling and formatting

[edit]

I currently use WP:AWB, the spelling correction script of User:Wmahan/Spelling, and the live spelling script of User:Lupin/Anti-vandal tool in an attempt to correct spelling mistakes or typos and to correct formatting to meet wikipedia standards defined in the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. I make mistakes now and again, so if I do make a mistake, please report it here and I'll repair it and try to update my scripts / usage procedures so I don't make the mistake again. I have posted my AWB script at User:Rjwilmsi/AWB. Rjwilmsi 08:56, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling

[edit]

I was merrily using your misspelling script to edit articles yesterday, but now get a “database empty” error — have I already broken it? Rjwilmsi 12:21, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't break it; I just didn't get around to updating the database. It should work again. Thanks for letting me know. -- Wmahan . 03:45, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling Correction For Jean Harris: I noticed that you changed "pled" to "plead" in a spelling correction for the Jean Harris article. For your information, "pled" was correct in the first place. "pleaded" is also correct, but "plead" is incorrect in the sentence. I'll give you a chance to correct it again. Done. You're right. For some reason 'pled' doesn't appear in the Aspell en_US or en_GB dictionaries, but I've added it to my own lists. Rjwilmsi 08:13, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I just updated my misspelling database with most of the new entries submitted by you and others. I hope your exam goes (went?) well. Wmahan. 16:06, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

125mm->125&#160mm

[edit]

I'm not sure why you changed this on the article on Traube's space, please explain on my talk page. --Steven Fruitsmaak 18:11, 29 May 2006 (UTC) Fixed Rjwilmsi 22:30, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

earnt

[edit]

"Earnt" is the simple past of "earn" — a perfectly legitimate form, used widely in the U.K. I've had this discussion before, and it's getting tiring. If Wiktionary doesn't think it's a word, so much the worse for Wiktionary. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:55, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Replied Rjwilmsi 22:30, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed the Wiktionary entry, and given a citation on the Talk page (from Fowler's). It's billed there as non-standard, but increasingly common in print (and Googling reveals the extent of its usage). I've seen (and used) it in modern academic English in reputable publications. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:27, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit on Kelly Van Der Veer

[edit]

Your edit on this article is not correct. The translation from dutch to English of "Kelly Van Der Veer" is "Kelly of of the feather" on Babelfish you can see it for a proof using [|Babelfish]. Therefore I am reverting your edit. Unitedroad 05:54, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for cleaning up the multiple typos in that little article, Rjwilmsi. Jeez! I must have been hitting the bottle pretty hard that night! -- Rizzleboffin 22:08, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As you can see here[1], you corrected the spelling of a name. It was correct in the first place. If this was done by a bot, could you tweak it to recognize Mar-Vell as a proper name? CovenantD 14:06, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please avoid sweeping non-changes.

[edit]

Hi Rjwilmsi,

If you could avoid making sweeping non-changes like this one, I'd appreciate it; they don't serve any purpose, but make the diffs useless. (Also, they can be taken as rude or imperious, as they impose one editor's preference without any actual benefit, much like changing an article from U.K. spelling to U.S. spelling. I'm sure that wasn't your intent, though.) It's not a huge deal, it would just make me happier. :-)

Thanks in advance! Ruakh 23:32, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see you left a comment at my talk-page; I've replied to it there. Thanks for getting back to me. :-) Ruakh 11:41, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for catching the Pharaoh's Woman typo! I'm not entirely sure I understand your edits to the link names, though. 8mm vs 8 mm, perhaps, but why 8 mm instead of 8 mm? Thanks, Girolamo Savonarola 17:42, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Correct wikipedia formatting has a non-breaking space for units such as millimetres, so I'm correcting them as part of my misspelling correction. In this case it's probably unnecessary to correct them, but they don't break the links, so I haven't bothered to cancel those changes. Rjwilmsi 18:03, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Be careful ':)

[edit]

Just a note, but although some or most of the spelling of an article meets normal conditions, sometimes misspellings must remain in order to be factually correct. Just letting you know. By the way, thanks for taking care of it. :) Ste4k 20:22, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you're referring to my edit http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Authorship_of_A_Course_in_Miracles&curid=3663921&diff=60878527&oldid=60878370 ? In which case I think my edit was correct. However, I do understand the need to quote sources directly and carry over spelling mistakes with a [sic] etc. and I'm trying to write my script / perform edits in such a way that these quotes aren't 'corrected'. If I do make mistakes let me know and I will rectify them. Rjwilmsi 20:34, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
yes, however, I am surprised that you can quote from PDF files. Great Job!! :) Ste4k 20:39, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

refered misspellings

[edit]

sure I can get that. i'll make it my next run. 'refered' is one of the top most common ones, along with 'prefered', 'occured' and 'offical'. those double r's get people. i haven't run it for refered though in about a month so it must be piling up! JoeBot 14:44, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The above article listed his name in the text as Saif-ul Azam and when you spelled checked you changed it to Saif-upload Azam. I've changed it back and no harm done, but it might be worth looking at the automated bot to ensure this doesn't happen indiscriminately. Good work. --Richhoncho 08:53, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Correction of "Misspellings" that shouldn't remain

[edit]

Rjwilmsi,

I think the correction of numerous misspellings is honorable. I found a few instances where misspellings are being improperly applied. The ones I'm particularly referring to are corrections to quotations of people who lived long enough ago to use non-contemporary spellings of English words that are also not incorrect either.

For example, the title "Compleat Works of Shakespeare" should be left alone.

The quote in Early life of Joseph Smith, Jr. referring to the "fulness of the Gospel" should probably be left that way.

Does each edit go through any sort of manual oversight, or is it a mass search-and-replace? When corrected to a modernly spelling recognized as correct, these sorts of edits are difficult to detect, as when I see the "Complete" works of Shakespeare, I (and probably most people) don't see anything inherently wrong unless I am overly familiar enough to know there's a misspelling that should persist.

I am curious about your thoughts regarding ways to leave these sorts of archaic spellings included, noting that I tend to believe that the value in correcting zillions of spelling errors to the encyclopedia is probably far greater than the hassle of a few people having to revert the odd change that shouldn't have been changed. Reswobslc 16:05, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

'comercial' etc.

Done! There is a bank and a couple other industries in Mexico/South America it appears that use the spanish spelled 'Comericial'; thus there may be hits via a Google inquery. Cheers! JoeBot 18:18, 30 September 2006 (UTC) [reply]

wikEd

Hi, I have seen that you are using the Cacycle editor extension. This program is no longer actively maintained in favor of its much more powerful successor wikEd.

wikEd has all the functionality of the old editor plus: • syntax highlighting • nifty image buttons • more fixing buttons • paste formatted text from Word or web pages • convert the formatted text into wikicode • adjust the font size • and much, much more.

Switching to wikEd is easy, check the detailed installation description on its project homepage. Often it is as simple as changing every occurrence of editor.js into wikEd.js on your User:YourUsername/monobook.js page.

UGM-27 Polaris

[edit]

Hi, thanks for correcting my repeated and inexcusable mis-spellings of equivalent etc, but you do need to consider the context when making other spelling changes. Your changes of 'allotted' to 'alloted' and 'targetting' to 'targeting' are misjudged in the context they appear in. That section on the British Polaris programme (get it ... with mme...) reads badly when changed because it was written from a British perspective about a British strategy. As I (perhaps imperfectly) understand Wiki policy on these matters, spelling in either American English or English English (the Scots, Welsh and Irish have their own languages, LOL) is perfectly acceptable, and where there is a spelling conflict the context should indicate which is most suitable. Its not a big deal; not worth dying in a ditch for, but a reversion would be appreciated. Brian.Burnell 12:31, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just want to let you know that I reverted the typo correction in Bank of Korea from "preceded" back to "preceeded". The typo is part of the script of Template:Infobox central bank. Spelling of "Staf"

[edit]

Hello,

Thank you for catching the typos in the article on the Royal Carillon School "Jef Denyn". I have reverted one of your revisions. "Staf Nees" is the proper spelling of the name of the former director of the school. Staf is a Flemish name, short for Gustaf, although in my research I have never come across documents of his in which he was designated as Gustaf.

You do realize AutoWikiBrowser is "fixing" ref names?[3] As in <ref name="maryland" /> → <ref name="Maryland" />. Although I don't think it breaks the page, this could be a problem since XML is case-sensitive. Regards, Tuxide 19:22, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not necessarily true; if someone wants to use the "maryland" reference again then they have to use the capitalized version, else change them back. It may not break the current version of the page but it's quite annoying. For example, the code below breaks. Tuxide 19:42, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
