IRC help

[edit]

Don't mention it, I like showing off! I'd be grateful, btw for an idiot's/old fart's guide to IRC and freenode - it seems like they're important in the wiki community and I don't know anything about them.

I have mIRC on an old disk somewhere, I think. I ran it but it asked me a lot of questions I didn't understand, and then didn't seem to do anything very interesting. So presumably I got it wrong somehow. Rentwa 13:56, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, irc is just mulitplayer notepad ;) Seriously, though, IRC is a pretty standard tool to communicate over text with each other. First thing, you should dump mIRC as it's buggy, unreliable and above all has a long record of vulnerabilities. On Windows, i would suggest using X-Chat instead. The win32 build offered by the original author is shareware as in you need to pay for it. Personally, i would just try one of the alternate builds mentioned on the wiki page. [1] used to be the main client, but the site seems down at the moment. Once you installed the thing, look for 'freenode' in the server list and click connect. After some time, lots of text scrolls by and you should see, amongst others, a message of the day (motd). This means you are fully connected and are able to join channels, the IRC name for chatrooms. Type '/join #wikipedia' and you are in. Another channel of use would probably be #xchat. As you can see, all channel names are prefixed with one (or more) hashes. X-Chat also features a channel list which you can browse and look for stuff that sounds interesting. Just join and hang out. If that did not help, just poke me, either here or online with '/query RichiH' RichiH 14:45, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like a pretty comprehensive guide! I'll give it a go when I'm back home (on hols and still using wikipedia 10+ hours a day - I need to re-take the wikiholic test). I remember a forum I used to post at installed a chat server and it was really odd (and fun) to start meeting people in 'chat space' (with text flying up faster than you could read it, let alone type). But it was a hack rather than a proper IRC thing, so I wouldn't have known how to start without a pointer, cheers Richi!

Your revert to Everton F.C.

[edit]

You reverted Everton F.C. to an appallingly vandalised version. I hope this was a mistake and suggest you are more careful in future. SenorKristobbal 14:11, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was. Sorry. Did you clean it up or should I do it? -- RichiH 14:13, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah its fixed no worries, I thought it was a mistake because you didn't exactly have a history of vandalism! SenorKristobbal 18:33, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I do have a history in vandalism, but in a positive sense ;) -- RichiH 16:31, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Blanking"

[edit]

(Conversation started on http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:69.209.105.235)

I'm not blanking maliciously, but on the wikiproject WP:PW, we have reached a consensus to removed sucession boxes from wrestler's pages and have also changed the format for how titles are to be listed, some discussion can be found here: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Professional_wrestling/Archive_14#Succession_Boxes and the current talk pages also has more info. 69.209.105.235 23:29, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, OK. Thanks :) -- I would suggest putting a note on your user and talk page stating this to avoid further confusion. I would also suggest registering a user. In any case, I will undo my reverts that I did on you :) -- RichiH 23:32, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:47, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
