Just an idea...

I have recently started splitting sections from my epic masterpiece TITUS, and realized that Hawaii hotspot is, according to WP:SIZERULE, approaching that grey area of splitability. I feel that it detracts from the subject when you split an article, but some subjects need the brevity to keep from alienating the reader. Boring details turn most people off, but those who are interested would take the time to explore the sub-articles. Again, just an idea if you think it is necessary. The Characteristics section is a bit long, so that would probably be a prime candidate for its own article, the rest is ok in my opinion. --ErgoSumtalktrib 22:15, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Sorry for the late response, but although I agreee that the article is in the gray area in the matter, it should be noted that a good 1/5 of that is in the huge table at the bottom of the article, otherwise it is tolerable. Although I'm pleased tpo find out that a topic that was 4 paras long when I started is now approaching splitable size ;) ResMar 23:08, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
No problem, I haven't been editing as much lately either. But let me know when you plan on going back to Hawaii hotspot, I will do what I can. I don't plan on giving up on this one. --ErgoSumtalktrib 17:37, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Userpage redesign

No worries if you can't get to it for a while; with my temporary semi-retirement, it will be some time before I'm thinking about it again. I'm still watching my talk though, so you can always leave me a message. KV5 (TalkPhils) 00:13, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I think I'm going to return more or less to a stable amount of activity; at least, once the new charger cable for my laptop comes :/ ResMar 23:11, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
That's a nice design. I'm not the hugest fan of tan, but it's a great design, really. I'd basically like to maintain the info on my userpage (though a lot of the redundant stuff is going to disappear, like the summary of articles - unless that can be hidden or collapsed somehow). Let me know if you have ideas for color schemes. No rush. Thanks. KV5 (TalkPhils) 23:47, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
I tend to be partial to greens and blues, but I'm very flexible with that. Whether it's to be dark text on a light background on a converse, I should be fine with that. KV5 (TalkPhils) 23:55, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Sorry... I've been monstrously busy. I haven't even gotten to look at it yet! I'll try and take a look tomorrow or Thursday if I'm home. KV5 (TalkPhils) 20:38, 3 November 2009 (UTC) No prob. ResMar 20:41, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Hey, I got a chance to take a look at the design. I really like the color scheme, and it's a lot simpler. Definitely like it. I would like the tabs to match the backgrounds if possible, but seriously no rush. Great job, and thanks a lot! KV5 (TalkPhils) 01:11, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

So sorry, it has been such a busy couple of weeks. November sucks. Thank god for the upcoming holidays. I'm good with the redesign; I like those other tabs at the top. I might tweak it around a little bit, but I really appreciate your help. KV5 (TalkPhils) 14:30, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Hey man, great job. I appreciate it! KV5 (TalkPhils) 15:09, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Bored?

Your enthusiasm is very welcome! Unfortunately I do not have the time at present to engage in a collaboration due to my school commitments. If you would like to work on battleships, I am assuming that you are already aware of WP:OMT. Hi there. I couldn't find much on HMS Anson (79), but there was some stuff on the King George V class battleship. I sent you something in an email, and will look for more later. Cheers, Dabomb87 (talk) 02:37, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Good news

I've found work to do!

NCVP

Yo; do you think the Northern Cordilleran Volcanic Province should be nominated for FA status? The NC volcanoes list could probably be nominated now as well... BT (talk) 18:30, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Lemmie look into it. Long time no see man :) ResMar 18:43, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Nominated it for FA. BT (talk) 07:07, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
The article still has problems with alts however. BT (talk) 16:30, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
Not my fault entirely actually. It's a really long guideline and to my great experation it's also incredibly interpretive. Best just do them as is try it and then wait for him to come around on the FAC. ResMar 16:45, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
I never said it's your fault. But doing nothing about the problem won't get the article anywhere. I reworded some of the alts that are partly mentioned in the candidate to see if it's better or not. BT (talk) 20:02, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
Eh? ResMar 20:10, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Please be civil

<blanked>

If Sandy has the right to ignore me I have the right to ignore this waste of time. Blanked.

I'm never touching Hawaii hotspot again. At least for a month.

This is your only warning; continue acting like a petulant child and wasting people's time, and you will be blocked. If you disagree with the FAC delegates, then don't bother submitting to FAC. Carrying on like this, however, is something we can do without. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 04:03, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm putting this behind me and concentrating on other things. Not going to touch the sore until it heals. Block me if you will. Sure. Who cares? ResMar 04:05, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Oh, too late...>< Sigh...harasment. Lemmie get this clear. Don't plan to block you, my pip, final warning-block without my input at all. Sigh...I can still IP, right? Maybe I can get some work done on Davidson Seamount...Crushed, ResMar

Request reason:

Hey, one and only warning from one admin followed by full block by next, who had just said he had no intention of doing so, not to mention there was no input from me. I just want to get this behind me. Why won't you let the sore heal?}

Decline reason:

During a discussion where you were asked to remain civil, you said this: [1] If you want to get this behind you, why not take a little while and not edit, let it blow over.--Jayron32 04:33, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

No, I warned you previously, although you removed the relevant discussion. –Juliancolton | Talk 04:16, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
What's wrong with that? I blanked it because I want to get this over with. I leave it alone, but seconds later get blocked...I JUST WANT TO GET THIS OUT OF MY LIFE. I'm not bothering with hotspot again. Shame to see so much hard work go to waste but...sigh. I've got other prospects.

It's funny I'de never imagine myself getting blocked. I avoid drama at all costs. Seen how it mangles and tears people apart...ResMar 04:22, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

I can stick it back up if you want. An ugly thing isn't it...ResMar 04:24, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Aw man I can't even edit my own sandbox and get started on Davidson...sigh...guess...I'll call it a night...personal attacks...r.r...demanding the reason...

Well, at least I finally got a reason, if it did lead me to this. Guess after-tommorow I'll fix the few issues, go to other things, in a few months nom it again. Or just quit writing stuff. That way I could concentrate on school more...ResMar 04:31, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

I took that back actually. Never mind. Never, ever even touch anyone powerful anymore. ResMar 04:33, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
To Sandy: Wow you've got some powerful friends. And you know what, once you actually gave me an answer, it was a good one. Too bad it too a ruined day of my life, plus a block, to get it. I still don't comprehend why I was ignored. But fine. Sigh...Can someone at least shorten the block to 12, I really want to start work on Davidson, looking fab for a DYK perhaps even a GAN. ResMar 04:48, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
It's got nothing to do with having "friends". All editors, from newbies to arbitrators, have an obligation to be civil and professional when dealing with other users. –Juliancolton | Talk 04:54, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
ResMar, you took it too far. Julian is no idiot; I assure you that. He's a voice of reason because he's gained people's respect, not because he has friends. When you return, I hope you'll be collegiate about this and calm down. I'm saying this as a friend; not as a critic or something stupid like that. Best, ceranthor 06:14, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
ResMar, I see that you are frustrated, and it's hard to do so much work and not have it appreciated. People here do appreciate the work that you do. I'm sorry that I didn't get to your article in time; I haven't enough time to even finish what I'm trying to get done here (or the last issue you contacted me about with (diamonds?) (ouch.). But I promise that, in January, when I have free time, I will help you go through the article. January 12th, specifically. And I'm not a vulcanologist, but I will do what I can and talk to people who are knowledgeable on the topic. Awickert (talk) 06:31, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
I felt the same way as you do ResMar after the FAC for Mount Garibaldi failed in 2008 because of problems, but I did not spaz out because if I did I could have ended up like you. BT (talk) 08:12, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
...And still no one gets the point! ResMar 15:00, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps I'm not being clear. The reason I got mad was not because it was closed (yes, that hurt), but because Sandy refused to explain WHY. She ignored me. I got really really mad, because as far as I can see it the right to have a close explained to you is something I have. Then more people popped up and defended her right to not respond, and bided me for not being patient with the close. Then I got really furious. I finally got a reason, after all that. Harrasment my butt. And still no one gets the point. It's like talking to a wall! Seriously? And now I'm being accused of being incivil...ResMar 17:09, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

FYI. Dabomb87 (talk) 02:56, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
ResMar, I'm glad you're back, and hope you will be encouraged to continue working on the article. The reason I didn't respond to you is that by the time I saw your first three posts, you had already been incredibly rude to me, and were hollering at me on my talk page. Other people merely asked you to calm down, which you didn't seem to do. As anyone who follows my talk page can probably tell you, if I'm online, I always respond promptly to talk inquiries, but no one appreciates rudeness. I hope we can consider that water under the bridge now, and you will continue your fine work. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:20, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

You deserve this as well.....

For your work on Hawaiian and Canadian volcanism articles, I will give you this award as well. You are a good user of Wikipedia that contributes to volcano-related articles..... BT (talk) 07:33, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Citing stuff

this is the good chunk of my conversation with Fif on citations. He's been rolling the red carpet from under FA writers lately with 2c stuff so I want to fix it all before going at it again. ResMar 00:36, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Whats required and what's not
This depends entirely on the work. Generally a citation takes one of two major forms (these examples following Turabian):
  1. Independent works
  1. Author. Title. Location: Publisher, Year. Page reference. Works with multiple authors obey different rules, so many authors until et.al. and and others (and how many authors before the use of et.al. in a nine author work?). Anonymous authors obey a series of rules. Corporate authors are given as corporate authors, even if they're the publisher. Year of first publication where important is usually required. Locations obey a set of rules.
  1. More optional fields include: Many people prefer to see a DOI: where available, or ISBN. Unpublished works don't take italics for their title. Published works do. Books with multiple named volumes where only one volume is being cited normally indicate that only a particular volume is referenced, and name the volume. Numbered only volumes are numbered. Second editions or translations are usually noted. Books in Series are normally noted as such, and the series editor given. Translators are often given.
  1. Debord, Guy; de Maupassant, Guy; Inspector Clouseau (pseud.); and others. A story about a cat. Volume 2: the cat's whiskers, trans. M. Thatcher, Stories of the World [Series] B. Brown (series ed.). Harmondsworth, UK: Penguin, 2007 (1984 English. 1977 French). See in particular 4-14.
  1. Works contained within other works obey a different set of rules
Author. "Title." In Containing Work containing work editors or authors. (Location: Publisher, Year): Page reference. OR
  1. Author. "Title." Journal or Newspaper Title. Volume (Issue) Year. Page reference.
Go buy a style manual, or read a style manual on "how to cite" online. Historians are rather good at drilling what you need to cite. Fifelfoo (talk) 02:13, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
Unananimous or unclear authorship
Corporate Authors are institutions which take the by line of a document. On the title page of a book, for example (not the "fly leaf" which contains only the work name, and often an author name), the authors will be listed. Corporate authors are identified by their institutional name as they write it on the title page. For example, "US Geological Survey" might commonly identify as "USGS" which could be obscure, so then you'd need to annotate it as such, "USGS [United States Geological Survey]". Your annotations, if required, go in square brackets to indicate they're not part of the author's own identification. Corporate Authors can be part of a group of authors. Morrison, Moris; Susandaughter, Susan; USGS; National Library Australia; Frankson, Frank; UNHCR [United Nations High Commission for Refugees]. Anonymous authors depend on the identification. A book could be widely known to be by someone, but they've published it as Anonymous; in which case attribute with square brackets [Marx, Karl]. Someone might merely be assumed to be the author [?Marx, Karl]. Someone might be published under the Authorial line "Anonymous." Anonymous, Anti-scientology rant on Youtube.. Someone might not have put their name in the authorial line at all. [Anonymous] My cat is a fine cat.. For corporate authors of Newspapers, sometimes articles are attributed to Wire services or Staff authors, or lack a by-line. AAP. "Article" Newspaper. Staff. "Article" Newspaper. For an assumed staff author (no by line). [Staff]. "Article" Newspaper. Editorials are different. The Editor. "Editorial: I love cats." Newspaper. Or. Newspaper "Editorial: I love cats." Newspaper. Fifelfoo (talk) 00:48, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
pp. vs § and ¶
If dealing with an object without pagination; you can indicate the section of the document being discussed using § Section names or numbers or ¶ Paragraph numbers or text starting "If dealing with an object...". You can also cite lines, as in "line 13". You would use the |pages= field of {{cite book}} for this, but also need to specify a "|nopp=" (just leave it blank) to suppress the pp. header. Fifelfoo (talk) 02:23, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
Double Names and PDF page #s
The essential page number is the page number printed on the document. Its nice to indicate the PDF page if they haven't page numbered the PDF correctly. pp. 3-6 (pdf pp. 6-9).
With other titles, go with the title as printed on the title page. If the title is "Frankenstein Or The Modern Prometheus" then the |title= is |title=Frankenstein Or The Modern Prometheus . This could be changed by the MOS about capitalisation of course. Some style guides about rules about capitalisation in titles in citations. Some style guides have rules about 16th century type titles where the title is a paragraph long, and on how to shorten them appropriately. If the work is known by two names, but only one is on the title page, do the following Titlepage name. [Other name known as]. So for example Das Kapital: a treatise on value formation and political economy and cats and horses and ponies and things about Kevin. [Capital]. Fifelfoo (talk) 22:39, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
Subtitles and alternate titles
Subtitles are distinguished from the main title using ":" for example, Science: What's It All About?
Anonymous authors
If you've checked the Title Page for authors, and no author is given on the title page (not the fly leaf), AND if the work is a result of a government agency, THEN the authorship is corporate, and that agency. IF the work is not a work of an agency, corporation, collective, political party, trade union, ngo, etc., THEN the authorship is [Anonymous] as the author hasn't authored it as Anonymous, and we are presuming an anonymous author. What's the work in question? Fifelfoo (talk) 03:39, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
USGS mostly. ResMar 03:47, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
If the USGS has unnamed employees write it for the GS as part of their employment, then its the USGS who wrote it Fifelfoo (talk) 04:17, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Just a couple of quick comments. I noticed that you linked Computer-aided but it's a disambiguation and I wasn't sure which one was correct. I noticed that you have the line "...the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, better known as the famous "Rockies,"..." but I think you mean the Mounties. Cheers. Your GA nomination of Kohala (mountain)

The article Kohala (mountain) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Kohala (mountain)/GA1 for things which need to be addressed. Hope you don't mind, I made the changes suggested on the talk page to the Template:Hawaiian volcanism e.g. using the diacritics to be consistent with the bodies. Glad to see you making progress on these. What do you think about putting links to the National Parks into this template? They do need work, however. They in turn have links to some other articles like Volcano House, Chain of Craters Road and Thomas Jaggar that are not geolgical but somewhat related. W Nowicki (talk) 18:54, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Notify me when you've done that, and I could comment there. Others who might be helpful are listed at the talk page of WP:FPOC. Cirt (talk) 18:57, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps it might be a good idea simply to peruse some of the portals I have worked on, for a model? Cirt (talk) 19:02, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Okay, great! Some others are at Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by featured portal nominations. Cirt (talk) 19:05, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Heh, thanks, it took a bit of work. Cirt (talk) 19:07, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

DYK for List of volcanoes in the Hawaiian – Emperor seamount chain

Updated DYK query On December 20, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article List of volcanoes in the Hawaiian – Emperor seamount chain, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Random thoughts...

If I had no life (check)...and two much time (check)...and enough material...I could pump out GAs like Durova pumps FPs...maybe faster. But one or the other is always out of whack. Plus, I have a life, sorta :) ResMar 04:45, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Collaboration!

Hey ResMar, I think the FAC I have will either pass/be archived Tuesday so we should be able to start Kil then. Yay! I'm working on a DYK and decorating the Christmas tree, but tomorrow I should be able to start some research initiative. Expect e-mails! Oh, and I'm putting aside Earthquake (I was going to bring it to GA after the FAC) so I can help with this. The article should be awesome. I'm so excited to finally work this article into shape. ceranthor 17:46, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Oy, I have stuff going on too. Kohala (mountain) is at GAN (come on won't anyone copyedit it...?), Hawaii hotspot is at FAC, and List of volcanoes in the Hawaiian – Emperor seamount chain is at FLC. I'm in for a tough week, probably...ResMar 18:10, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
Hey, can you hop on IRC? I want to talk to you about the article. The channel I'm on is called ##ceranthor. If you want to just use freenode, use ResMar as your nick and go to here. ceranthor 20:08, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
how the hell do you use this thing? I got mIRC but I can't get anything working. ResMar 20:24, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
um, just try using http://java.freenode.net and type in "ResMar" as your nickname and "#ceranthor" as the channel. I think that should work. mIRC can be confusing. :) ceranthor 20:28, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

GAN

Hi, would it help if I extended to say 9 January 2010?

Well Awd is coming around to it, so yeah, it would :) ResMar 01:20, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

The PDF's work, but the handle links are broken, most likely due to server being down. The root server should kick in at some point and see the links again, but until it does, they will appear broken. Let's hope it happens tomorrow. Viriditas (talk) 11:57, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

'Kay. I think that they should be left there, if the server comes up again, good, if not then eventually they WILL be removed. Can't hasve dead links you know. ResMar 20:28, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
The main server is up, but the handle links aren't recognized because the server was down and lost the connection. I'm waiting for the handle links to come back up. I'm also in the process of contacting the administrator. The irony, of course, is that the PDF's work, but they don't want us to link to them because they are dynamic depending on the state of the repository, whereas the handles are supposed to be static. Sheesh. Viriditas (talk) 01:23, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
Interesting. Now I get the stuff with the handles...I thought it was just shortening the URL :) ResMar 01:27, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Update: According to the University of Hawaii library system, their servers are being physically moved from an old to a new server room over winter break, and the problem is unlikely to be fixed until the beginning of the year. For this reason, we should use the PDF files instead of the handles, but there is no guarantee they will contiue to work during the move. So, we are in hurry up and wait mode. GA Sweeps update

Thanks to everyone's efforts to the GA Sweeps process, we are currently over 90% done with only 226 articles remain to be swept! As always, I want to thank you for using your time to ensure the quality of the older GAs. With over 50 members participating in Sweeps, that averages out to about 4 articles per person! If each member reviews an article once a week this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. At that point, awards will be handed out to reviewers. As an added incentive, if we complete over 100 articles reviewed this month, I will donate $100 to Wikipedia Forever on behalf of all GA Sweeps participants. I hope that this incentive will help to increase our motivation for completing Sweeps while supporting Wikipedia in the process. If you have any questions about reviews or Sweeps let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 00:15, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I get sour when people bug me over sources...it's the one thing that erks me most (besides inactivity over FACs). Sorry...see the FAC page again. ResMar 00:16, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
It really sucks that the major sources aren't available to the general public, and you have to make due with whatever else. And what your left with doesn't necessarily correlate with mainstream scientific thought. But consider yourself with access to papers now; I'm happy to be an email-order service for whatever you need for Wikipedia articles. And it's usually easy enough to find which papers you need via internet searches, so you can copy/paste lists of titles or whatever and it won't take me long to get things back to you. It's for a very worthy cause. Awickert (talk) 08:07, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I'm not feelin particularly well today so unfortunatly it must wait another day. ResMar 21:34, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Hope you feel better soon - just getting over a nasty illness myself. My onlineness will touch-and-go until the 11th, which I know stinks for you (sorry), but I'll try to get some reading info together in the meantime. Awickert (talk) 08:12, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

(outdent) FYI, Don L. Anderson (the author of at least a few major sources that you used in the Hawaii hotspot article) is famous/infamous for believing that hotspots don't exist. While he has some interesting arguments, he is certainly in opposition to most geologists. I'm cutting his arguments down to a few ones that he reiterates and seem to have a little oomph behind them, often from other researchers as well. Awickert (talk) 06:11, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Wikiproject: Did you know? 06:00, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm down to 5 hours of sleep for the night, so I'm signing off. I think that you can fix the factual issues in the paragraph that starts "Many geophysicists" (last real paragraph in "Wilson's stationary hotspot theory" section) without hardcore sources: if you can do this, great, do it. If not, I'll overhaul later. Fortunately this is the only major tangle of basic factual issues that I've so far while skimming. Awickert (talk) 07:45, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

See my talk; someone has volunteered to review the article whenever I finish going over the factual portions. It would be much appreciated to hear back from you because I want to remove the section that I edited and spread its info across the portion of the article on the hotspot itself. I also have the (above) factual issues that I'm happy to take care of if you don't want to, and also have some other thoughts that can wait until after these two items are straightened out. But I now have time and the sooner I hear back from you, the sooner we can figure out a plan of attack and the sooner I can get to work on the article. Awickert (talk) 03:37, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Question: can you fix that paragraph that I noted above? If I can count on some help from you, I'll keep the FAC open. If not, I'm going to have to strongly oppose its promotion and request its close. The reason is that it will take me a while to make all of the necessary changes, and since I don't currently have much intrinsic interest in this topic, I'll burn out a lot more if I try to do it all quickly than if the FAC closes and I have time to do it slowly. However, if you can help check textbook-style facts (e.g., above), it will lessen my workload and convince me of your interest in improving the article during this round of FAC, which will keep me motivated to do it quickly. Awickert (talk) 06:16, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

That makes me Poseidon! Thanks guys! Really, I'll do my best to put everything together that needs to be there, and put it in order. It's much harder to write a scientific FA than a geographic or political one IMO because you can't just say "X said Y and Z said L", but have to deal with something where there is an absolute fact somewhere out there and a whole bunch of people trying to figure it out with varied success. Hi ResMar. Several editors have been keeping this FLC alive, but it would really help if you, as the nominator, could take a look. February GA Sweeps update

Progress as of January 2010

Thanks to everyone's efforts to the GA Sweeps process, we are currently over 95% done with around 130 articles left to be swept! Currently there are over 50 members participating in Sweeps, that averages out to about 3 articles per person! If each member reviews an article once a week this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. At that point, awards will be handed out to reviewers. Per my message last month, although we did not review 100 articles last month, I still made a donation of $90 (we had 90 reviews completed/initiated) to Wikipedia Forever on behalf of all GA Sweeps reviewers. I would like to thank everyone's efforts for last month, and ask for additional effort this month so we can be finished. I know you have to be sick of seeing these updates (as well as Sweeps itself) by now, so please do consider reviewing a few articles if you haven't reviewed in a while. If you have any questions about reviews or Sweeps let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 02:44, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Request

I noticed that you renovate userpage - would you be interested in redesigning mine? I haven't done much work on it because I'm terrible at formatting, but would love for you to make it exciting! If you don't have time, no problem, that's part of the reason I'm not trying to do it myself. Thanks! PrincessofLlyr (talk) 21:57, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

I haven't been very active lately but I'll see what I can do :) ResMar 03:06, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
Great! I would like a feminine, but not overwhelming color design, preferably in blues and greens. I may go through and clean out some of the excessive info...but a lot of what I'll want info-wise is on there now. I would love it if you could incorporate the Percy Jackson task force alert box somewhere. I messed with it some the other day, but couldn't get it looking good anywhere. Also, I thought it would be nice if my talk page had the same color scheme as my userpage - would that be too difficult? No hurry on any of this, just whenever you have time. Thank you so much! PrincessofLlyr (talk) 03:51, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

GA Sweeps Completed!

Thanks to everyone's amazing efforts in February, we have reviewed all of the articles and are now finished with Sweeps! There are still about 30 articles currently on hold, and once those reviews are completed, I will send you a final message about Sweeps process stats including the total number of articles that were passed and failed. If you have one of these open reviews, be sure to update your count when the review is completed so I can compile the stats. You can except to receive your award for reviewing within the next week or two. Although the majority of the editors did not start Sweeps at the beginning in August 2007 (myself included), over 50 editors have all come together to complete a monumental task and improve many articles in the process. I commend you for sticking with this often challenging task and strengthening the integrity of the GA WikiProject as well as the GAs themselves. I invite you to take a break from reviewing (don't want you to burn out!) and then consider returning/starting to review GANs and/or contribute to GAR reviews. With your assistance, we can help bring the backlog down to a manageable level and help inspire more editors to improve articles to higher classes and consider reviewing themselves. Again, thank you for putting up with difficult reviews, unhappy editors, numerous spam messages from me, and taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Volcanism of Hawaii Workgroup

You haven't been around for a long time. Well, I'd like to start working on Hualālai, if you don't mind. Ineed somthing to counterbaalnce all that military history. Buggie111 (talk) 16:18, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

I guess I haven't. Kinda gave up on what's probably the second most stressful thing on the wiki after candidacy for adminship, WP:FA. Nothing I do really goes through at all. Feedback is low, activity is low, anyone actually caring is low with the majority of the stuff I do. I dunno man its so SLOW.

Thought about quitting this volcano crap with the 0 work activity (I can summarize 90% of what goes on in naming like 4 people) but yeah milist has its issues too. Mainly, holy crap where am I supposed to get sources when I don't have a freaking public library in the my living room.

Right about that article, sure do what u want :). i'm warning you though if it hasnt erupted in the last 100 years the amount of stuff you'll find on it decreases dramatically. ResMar 01:44, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Working hypothesis

Sorry, if I bother you... I have a working hypothesis: 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2010 Chile earthquake, 2010 eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull, Katla erupts, Southwest Pacific earthquake (New Zealand or Sumatra), "Big One" San Andreas Fault earthquake, and it breaks a leak open in the Yellowstone magma chamber. What do you think? What must be done on Wikipedia before D-Day? --Chris.urs-o (talk) 08:08, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm not a perfessional geologist, if you want consulting talk to Chuck (er, Awk). Terribly active this year, yes...lot of work to do we have :D I'm still vaguely committed to Hawaiian volcanoes. Perhaps you can GA something on that thing. ResMar 19:31, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
Good to see you around Res. Chris.urs-o... just fyi, the Mayan calendar does not end on 12/21/12. :) ceranthor 01:17, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Hahaha :D I'm not talking about the Mayan calendar; but the Modern Age ends around 1989, 1999 and 2012, I suppose. Simulations get a "big one" every 101 years, and Yellowstone has a repose time of less than 700 ka ;) There are other hints around too... I'm right... I'm not sure that I can write a GA myself. --Chris.urs-o (talk) 06:14, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes I'm aware of the Mayas and of Nostrodamus and of the secret stuff in the Bible. Then again if you believe the world will end next year why bother writing articles on Wikipedia :D ResMar 23:11, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
I said Modern Age ends, and Comtemporary Age begins, no world end, sorry :D --Chris.urs-o (talk) 05:21, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Well then how is that related to contemperary :L ResMar 22:34, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
The lure, "the end of the Cold War"; 9/11; Afghanistan War, Iraq War, Subprime mortgage crisis, 2010 European sovereign debt crisis. These are major events and they end the 1950-2010 cycle. Earthquakes on the other hand are just arithmetics & engineering, you can't change a plate on a surface of a globus without changing many others as well. Congrats

I noticed Loihi Seamount on the front page today, congratulations! I know you worked hard on it, and you deserve the recognition. Its a shame we couldn't get Hawaii hotspot featured on the front page, but I guess you can't win 'em all. --ErgoSumtalktrib 00:43, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Huh? Oh. Cool. ResMar 04:07, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

The Original Barnstar
For all the hard work of getting Loihi Seamount to the front page. Sticking with it for three FAN iterations is impressive. Excellent work. meshach (talk) 01:35, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Template:Hawaiian volcanism

Hi,

I'm glad to see you are not completely retired. Volcanoes on Wikipedia would have been poorer without you. I was pleased to see that Loihi made it to the main page, largely due to your efforts.

About three weeks ago, I proposed on its discussion page that Template:Hawaiian volcanism should be renamed, because I think its current name is ambiguous. We have approached the content of the template from different viewpoints in the past :-) I'd be interested in your views on this. Thanks.

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Karanacs (talk) 17:16, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Hmm...interesting. ResMar 22:55, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Mlpearc

Welcome back. Not sure which issue you are addressing? One is that File:Hualalai from north.jpg seems to be a picture of Mauna Loa, since it looks like the grassy plain of Parker Ranch around Waimea, Hawaii County, Hawaii in the foreground. The upload comment mentions Waimea, and Mauna Kea is very visible from there, although there might be someplace where Hualālai can be seen, it is not likely. North it is the dry saddle, not grass. The pic was uploaded in 2004 and the user not active since 2007. So I would vote to remove that picture.

I would replace it with the File:Hualālai 1996.jpg pic which is known to come from USGS. The only nit with that one is that its USGS page says it was taken from Kuki'i beach, which is probably a typo. Kuki'i is on the other side of Mauna Loa, which is green. This is clearly a leeward lava flow and new road, so I assumed it was from Kuki'o beach, on the 1801 flow.

Now a pic from the top of Mauna Kea would be great; I never went there. But these two clearly are not. And since the vog was so heavy all my pics are hazy of Hualālai. A pic from the saddle should also work if you can find one of those.

While you were out I worked on the Kaupulehu, Hawaii article, widening its scope from the previous one on the Four Seasons Hotel there (which caused a flap with a certain editor, so I backed off the Hawaii project a bit). I would suggest changing the Hualālai article to not mention just the Kona Village resort (that was just the first one, there are now the Four Seasons and Kuki'o there), but be historically accurate and say the flow destroyed most of the former settlement of Kaʻūpūlehu, since there was a very historic event there just ten years earlier. Also mention the Huehue flow which formed the Keahole Point area where the airport is now. And somewhere should point out that the slopes are a prime growing area for Kona coffee!

Aloha. W Nowicki (talk) 22:25, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

It seems very incorrect to say the Kona Village Resort "witnessed the 1801 event" since the resort was built in 1961. Did they have a time machine? I think it was just that Kona Village was the only resort built on the flow at the time the 1974 report was written. It does not support your claim, so I will try to fix. Also very misleading to say it is "pocketed by several major resorts" since the resorts are on the coast, not near the volcano itself. They could still get over-run by lava, but that is already stated.

Not sure what your question is of the the 2006 Hawaii earthquake? It's epicenter was in the ocean offshore of Kiholo Bay, actually near the Māhukona volcano, and the 6.0 aftershock was essentially under the suspected summit of Māhukona. To claim it was somewhat related to Hualālai would of course take a reliable source that says so. Most of the damage seems to have been in the Kohala district, but not sure why. What is probably needed in the body is a mention of how Hualālai lava flows have covered up the earlier Māhukona, making it much harder to study. W Nowicki (talk) 19:59, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
