re: images in player pages

[edit]

If you read the Template:promotional tag, you'll see that it says "This is a copyrighted image that has been released by a company or organization to promote their work or product in the media, such as advertising material or a promotional photo in a press kit." This is not true for any photograph downloaded from FIFAworldcup.com. The images were not part of a press kit - they were specifically for use on the World Cup website. There is nothing on those site that says the copyright has been released and the uploader did not provide any fair use rationale.

Basically, without expressed written consent, all photographs the user uploaded are copyvios. Ytny 21:14, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why did I just change the JNT players' pages? If I could blanket revert each one of the user's changes, I would, but I have neither the time nor the energy do each one by hand.
And I don't agree with the "other pages do it too" explanation. I don't think most users understand or care that the photos are copyvios, but that doesn't make it right and makes Wikipedia look amateurish. At the very least, users need to stop misusing the Promo tag so much and actually try to make a fair use rationale.
I'm sorry about the rant - I don't want to be a copyright nanny and I think large companies can be dicks about it, but I care about intellectual property rights and it bothers me that too many people are happy to ignore them when it's incovenient for them. Ytny 18:28, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
