November 22 + 26: Free Culture Friday and Wikicurious photo event!
November 22: Free Culture Friday | |
---|---|
You are invited to Foundation and Friends' Free Culture Friday at Prime Produce on Friday, November 22. This event will feature a reception with Wikimedia Foundation staff in the afternoon, followed by a more informal salon and game night, utilizing Prime Produce's vast collection of board games. No experience of anything at all is required. All are welcome!
| |
November 26: Wikicurious: Capturing the Moment | |
You are also invited to Wikicurious: Capturing the Moment, the third event of the beginner-focused Wikicurious series, at Jefferson Market Library on Tuesday, November 26, in collaboration with WikiPortraits and AfroCROWD. All are welcome to attend, especially those interested in photography or contributing to Wikimedia Commons. We will explore the art of capturing the moment through photography and learn the basics of Wikimedia Commons, and (weather-permitting) we are also planning a photo walk, so bring your camera (or use your smartphone)!

Kitten
Why did you revert my kitten? I had one this spring and this summer. Was the originator a sockpuppet, or what? I could have erased the text if I only wanted the picture of the immature Felis catus Robert McClenon (talk) 05:48, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- Obviously trolling. But I get the wanting to keep the kitten! RegentsPark (comment) 16:57, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- By the way, as you might have inferred, the reason I no longer have a kitten is that she is no longer a kitten, but is still a Felis catus. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:08, 11 November 2024 (UTC)

The Signpost interview ...
Hey, long time no talk, and thanks for your support at my re-RFA! Re the interview: I know it was a very long time ago, but while we did have an interesting conversation about a possible interview (here's your side), unfortunately it didn't work out. However, I was later interviewed in the Signpost in 2017. While I'm grateful for your !vote, the wiki-archaeologist in me doesn't like the idea of people trying to chase down a non-existent interview because of it, if you know what I mean. Would you mind adding something referencing this message of mine? Or would you be OK with me doing that? Graham87 (talk) 16:23, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- Goodness. I must be getting senile! Thanks for pointing this out and I've added a mea culpa to the support. Abject apologies! RegentsPark (comment) 16:38, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- Cool thanks. No worries. Graham87 (talk) 16:41, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

Page move
Hi, A new user with little experience moved these pages and turned them into kingdoms. Although, these are small princely states. There is huge difference between a kingdom and princely state or estates. Hence as per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:RMUM we need to restore its original name. I did it for some pages but for these three, I need the assistance of an admin as I am unable to move them back.
- https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Kingdom_of_Pudukkottai (original title: Pudukkottai State)
- https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Kingdom_of_Ramnad (Ramnad estate)
- https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Kingdom_of_Pratapgarh (Pratapgarh State)
- https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Kingdom_of_Bikaner (Bikaner State)

- Undone as contested moves. I've also dropped an explanatory note on that user's talk page. RegentsPark (comment) 15:19, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
Sock
Hi, it seems the IPs making disruptive changes (similar edits) [1] [2] is the same sock farm that did similar disruption at these articles [3], [4], [5] in the first week of November and possible before that. I'd like to request page protection for this article, considering their history of never ending disruption in pages they come across. Thanks. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:39, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

- @Fowler&fowler: Thanks Fowler. Hope 2025 is a good year for you. "Full of things that have never been" but, hopefully, good things! RegentsPark (comment) 17:25, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you @RegentsPark: for that nice quote from Rilke. I tried to find the fuller version and came up with this (middle of the page):
but am having a hard time figuring out the end of that sentence. I wonder if you have the German version. It is been a long time since I passed my German requirement in graduate school by the skin of my teeth, but perhaps I could run it through Google translate and see if they come up with the same. And now let us believe in a long year that is given to us, new, untouched, full of things that have never been, full of work that has never been done, full of tasks, claims, and demands; and let us see that we learn to take it without letting fall too much of what it has to bestow upon those who demand of it necessary, serious, and great things.
- Regardless, thanks for the nice words. I too hope the coming year will bring some unexpected but pleasant things for all of us. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 21:39, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- Or maybe @Joshua Jonathan and Austronesier: might have the original German source. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 21:40, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- I once had the collected works in pocket-format, but got rid of it a couple of decades ago... Joshua Jonathan - Let's talk! 04:22, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- I still have the 6-vol. Insel edition of Rilke's works in my shelf, however this hasn't the letters in it. The German original text floats around in several web pages and goes:
Und nun wollen wir glauben an ein langes Jahr, das uns gegeben ist, neu, unberührt, voll nie gewesener Dinge, voll nie getaner Arbeit, voll Aufgabe, Anspruch und Zumutung; und wollen sehen, daß wirs nehmen lernen, ohne allzuviel fallen zu lassen von dem, was es zu vergeben hat, an die, die Notwendiges, Ernstes und Großes von ihm verlangen.
(I've verified it by means of Google Books snippets.) Wish you all wonderful holidays! –Austronesier (talk) 08:28, 24 December 2024 (UTC)- Thank you @Austronesier:. This exchange on Regents Park's page captures the spirit of my greeting card. It is a "rare privilege" indeed. The German text clarifies a little how it might be translated in simple English with the help of Google Translate: " in a long year that is given to us ... full of tasks, demands, and even unreasonable demands; and let us learn to accept them without letting go too much of what it has to give to those who demand the necessary, serious, and great things." It is not perfect, but it is at least in the form in which it can go into my commonplace book Fowler&fowler«Talk» 11:12, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

- A throwaway quote inspired this enjoyable exchange! Ah, the pleasures of Wikipedia! Unfortunately my German is limited to Nein andDas Boot and I'm forced to stick with English translations.RegentsPark (comment) 17:31, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
