Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello RedWolf! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. Please note that all biographies of living persons must be sourced. If you were to add reliable, secondary sources to this article, it would greatly help us with the current 51 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Fair use rationale for File:Kane scr.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Kane scr.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:03, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protect infobox sub-templates

[edit]

Hi, RedWolf. Should we (at least) semi-protect the Infobox Mountains subtemplates (/main and /map)? They're transcluded in a lot of places. —hike395 (talk) 05:08, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. How did you fix the map label problem? —hike395 (talk)

  • Hi. Yes, I was thinking myself that those should probably be protected so /main and /map are now semi-protected. The map label problem was a strange one. I couldn't see why it wasn't working the way it was; I don't know, maybe too many transclusion levels? In any case, I solved it by passing the "name" and "Name" parameters as other values for the label parameter. RedWolf (talk) 05:53, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Prospect Peak

[edit]

Thanks for the disambiguation page, absent any previous Prospect Peak articles I was unaware of all the others. Should do a better review of geoNames before creating the article. Appreciate the clean-up you've done on the Yellowstone mountain articles, I've learned a few new things from it.--Mike Cline (talk) 19:00, 5 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Usually when I'm about to create a new article, I search a couple of reliable sources such as GNIS, peakfinder.com, bivouac.com and peakbagger.com to check on multiple mountains/peaks with the same name. Good work on the new articles you have created. RedWolf (talk) 21:32, 5 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Lynx Mountain

I was not trying to revert your edits. I was creating some other articles on mountains and i was using the current info box you see that is currently used. I did not mean to remove cites you had added to the article i will add anything that was removed when i edited it. Cheers Kyle1278 07:53, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

French map from 1733?

[edit]

Hello! I am mostly editing at Swedish Wikipedia and translate currently parts of the article Mount Everest, to Swedish. My question is about this edit, you wrote that the name Chomolungma could be found on a map published in Paris already 1733. But on this site, in Swedish, they write that it was on a map from 1773.

What I have found is this map from 1734 or 1737 (It looks like they do not know which year it is from.) and this from 1773. The first image resolution is to low and it is not possible to read what it stands. The second image does not show that part of the map I want to see.

So, do you know which year is the correct? Elfsborgarn (talk) 14:20, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi. The information on the map came from a book ("Everest - The Best Writing and Pictures from Seventy Years of Human Endeavour") I borrowed from the local library which I no longer have in my possession. I cannot recall for certain whether the map was actually shown in the book or not. I can try to re-borrow the book to check it but it may be take a few days. I want to borrow it again anyways to add more information to a few other Everest related articles. RedWolf (talk) 15:48, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! It would be nice if you let me know when you are done. Preferably, on my Swedish talk page (I will discover it earlier there). Elfsborgarn (talk) 17:55, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Today, when I searched after more information about Mount Everest I found this. The text says, in Swedish, “According to Sven Hedin can the native name of Everest be found on maps made of French Jesuits already 1717”. The text is from Nordisk familjebok. What do you think about that? Elfsborgarn (talk) 21:32, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

There is a bug in the current version of the template. I wrote an explanation and fix here. I sent you and email with the same info. –droll [chat] 05:10, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm thinking we should do a minimal fix, not adopt all of Droll's changes in a big rush. Let me work on that right now. —hike395 (talk) 06:41, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think I have a minimal fix to the bug, described at Template talk:Infobox mountain#Problems with meters to feet conversion. We need an admin to commit the fix. Thanks! —hike395 (talk) 07:03, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New "Canada British Columbia (no subdivisions)" map template

[edit]

Hi RedWolf; I found you in the history of {{Location map Canada British Columbia}}, which I just cloned with {{Location map Canada British Columbia (no subdivisions)}} using File:Canada British Columbia (no subdivisions) location map.svg which someone had kindly created at my request quite a while ago but I've never tried to apply. I must have some clutter, probably, in the new one, and added some text to the original specifying what it should, and should not be, used for. I see from fixing Mount Albert Edward (British Columbia) that I don't have to directly alter {{Infobox Mountain}} and would imagine the same applies for Infobox Lake, Infobox Island etc.....I"m of a mind that when Infobox Settlement is used for communities which ceased to exist before 1967 (when RDs were created, and not before) that an alternate map be available; I'm hoping eventually to have a map showing the historic regions, or able to highlight the region applicable to a certain subject, e.g. the actual boundaries of the Cariboo for Cariboo Gold Rush-related articles, or a map showing a Tshilqot'in community or Category:Settlements in the Chilcotin and bypass the undue-weight regional district mapping altogether....if I were a cartographer lots would have been made by now, let's put it that way....anyway, if you'd please have a look and tidy up any mistakes I made in the cloning/documentation....I've left the interwikis intact but may make a few of them, as I'd come up against these r.d. maps in fr-wiki and de-wiki and find them really irritating as they're not a normal way of subdividing/describing British Columbia....the weight placed on them (rds) by applying them to topics which have nothing to do with regional district governance needs to be checked and reversed...oen of the reasons being the spreading of this misconception into other languages; see the German-language article talkpage on Vancouver Island for more comments, though I could go on and on....RD maps are HIGHLY inappropriate for Indian Reserves or historic Indian villages, likewise for provincial parks, mountains, etc etc which regional district governance has no relation whatsoever to...Skookum1 (talk) 01:10, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Map question

[edit]

Hello Red Wolf. I have a question regarding adding location maps to mountain infoboxes. What is the desired procedure, when a certain mountain lies exactly on the border between two countries? Which location map should be used? Thanks. - Darwinek (talk) 16:13, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi. That's more of a judgement call than anything. We don't have any guidelines in the WikiProject as far as I know although this should probably be discussed. I usually try both country maps and pick one that looks more aesthetically appealing to me as my overall selection factor. There's no hard rule - the person who adds the map can freely choose. I updated the list. I knew of an easier way to do it. Hope it's OK. I never understood it's function before.

Update mountain list

[edit]

I updated the mountain list today. If I ever forget this for too long, please leave a note on my talk page.  –droll [chat] 19:13, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • No problem. I only did it every 3 months just because there was a lot of manual steps. Once a month is probably more than enough but feel free to update it more frequently if you wish although I would say the minimum time between updates should be 2 weeks. Infobox mountain

[edit]

I listed a number of changes in the sandbox version here. No one has said a word about it. The current version of the infobox is broken so there is some urgency. The coordinates data cell wraps if coordinates_ref is used. If you have no comments, I'll request a protected page edit in a few days.  –droll [chat] 21:38, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Update Infobox mountain?

[edit]

I think its time to update the infobox. I'll make some notes at on the talk page soon. I think its time to stop using the wrapper. When I was checking for the use of old parameter names I ran across a few articles where coordinated parameters like latd instead of lat_d were used. Do you think we should keep that option available. I know that syntax is used in templates such as {{Infobox settlement}}. –droll [chat] 17:45, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am a little hesitant to do this without first confirming that it won't break any existing infoboxes. Perhaps if we added some tracking categories for the old parameter names, they could first be cleaned up. RedWolf (talk) 02:07, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've used WP:AWB to do the checking but I'll write some code for a tracking category. –droll [chat] 02:27, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The template with tracking is this sandbox. The diff is here. Just paste the stuff in the sandbox into {{Infobox mountain}}. The tracking category is here.
Höllpass was created today. The author used latd and longd. –droll [chat] 03:35, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hold on for a few minutes. –droll [chat] 03:49, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I fixed a few things in the sandbox. –droll [chat] 03:59, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sentinel Range peaks

[edit]

Dear RedWolf, I wonder if it was a good idea to replace articles on individual peaks in that range by redirects, merging their content with the Sentinel Range article in the process. In my opinion, those peaks (and other relevant geographic features such as massifs, ridges, cols, glaciers etc.) should have articles of their own with the possibility for further expansion including description, ascent histories, pictures etc. Best, Apcbg (talk) 09:48, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • IMHO, it is very unlikely that most of these mountains will ever be updated with any information beyond that which is available in GNIS. Thus, it makes sense to do a merge/redirect of these mountains. See "Named geographic features" in Wikipedia:Notability (geography). If sometime in the distant future, more information becomes available (like a photo), then it might be worth making the mountain/peak a separate article again. RedWolf (talk) 15:59, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Might have worked as a temporary arrangement, but the time for that has already passed I'm afraid. Indeed, apart from the 19 geographic features presently included in the Sentinel Range article there are some 70 more Sentinel Range related Wikipedia articles already, and the merger of 90 articles would not seem practical.
As for the information content, even the basic information from the GNIS entries does not fall into Wikipedia:Notability (geography)'s category "little information beyond statistics and coordinates" as about half of its volume is devoted to the name origins and the exploration of the particular feature. As a result, a large part of the present Sentinel Range article is taken by details that do not belong such as name origins and exploration of particular features in the range. Categories for volcanoes erupting by year

[edit]

Hi there I am making these categories based on eruption data from http://www.volcano.si.edu/ which list individual eruptions for volcanoes. I realize that some of these had eruptions in 2008, 2009, and 2010 but the data base list that these had separate eruptions in all three years. I for volcanoes like Chaitén I only categorized it by its start year since it is still erupting currently, and this would be defiantly over categorized. I also considered taking up this idea based on Earthquakes by Year creating a similar structure so people can see what volcanoes were erupting on what years. If this is unnecessary than maybe someone should consider creating a page similar to Earthquakes in 2010. I will stop at Category:Volcanoes erupting in 2008 and let the Volcano project discuss the matter on what they might do. Stormchaser89 (talk) 10:50pm US central time, 4 December 2010
