passport

[edit]

At Irish passport you appear to be objecting only to one or two edits, yet you reverted all of the edits. Please rectify this by restoring the other edits. Mooretwin (talk) 01:31, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you make consecutive edits apparently to hide your POV push then a revert is a reasonable response. Your disruptive editing over misapplication of IMOS on several articles is on the point of referral to ANI. Your decision. RashersTierney (talk) 01:39, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Sean Connery

[edit]

Did you even look at the article for the show he's an avid fan of? How could anyone hate Normandy Park? I don't think we need a direct quote here. SEGATime2 (talk) 22:43, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If Connery made the statement you claim, it should be easy enough to provide a reliable reference. What's the difficulty with that? RashersTierney (talk) 22:50, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha... SEGATime2 (talk) 23:07, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just a few words

[edit]

I hope you are doing fine. I just wanted to let you know about what is going on and what will happen next. I just resigned on March 21st of the Amical association because after the last attacks the Association suffered, its people are not able to decide what to do and do not seem to be willing or able to think in terms of counterattack... You will know more about it if you check the Movement Roles page probably this night or tomorrow morning. Sorry to act so harshly but I can't stand such actions, the general hypocrisy and the petty and personal interests... Take care, again I wish you and Ireland (I hope the economy and the situation has improved there...) all the best! Claudi/Capsot (talk) 08:00, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help from Sister_Linda

[edit]

I reviewed what I posted yesterday and agree with you totally. I will source and reference and clean up my input.

My primary concern was that you can not search the word "Taw" on Wikipedia and find that it is the commom word (in the USA) for a Hopscotch marker. The firm I listed as making taw's is long out of business. But my source was the first reference to the word taw that I could find. I do not knwo who invented the the idea or word Taw but I will continue to research this aspect of the USA entromprial spirit often tries to turn a free fun game into somethign for profit.

I am new to this, but I am excited to share various aspects of game culture and learning with others through this formate. T

Thanks again for you input

Sister Linda (talk) 16:58, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, welcome aboard. I'll add a few links at your Talk Page that should be of help. RashersTierney (talk) 18:56, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

John Rocha

[edit]

I'm afraid I think it is certainly vandalism, since fact is being replaced with fiction and this has been pointed out repeatedly and in depth. Please refer to the Talk Page on John Rocha if you wish. Qwerta369 (talk) 13:17, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I already have. And to your Talk Page, since deleted by you, and to the attempt to resolve this issue by mediation. Edit warring is not the way to go on this issue and will only lead to you getting another block, as you should realise. Misuse of Twinkle can also lead to revocation of that facility. RashersTierney (talk) 13:30, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well then, respectfully, you should see that Rocha is not Irish, no? One doesn't gain a nationality simply by living in a country for a long time. I don't quite fathom why this is so hard for people to comprehend. Qwerta369 (talk) 13:58, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A wikipedia contributor also does not ignore multiple references and deletes them because he doesn't agree with it, whilst tagging it as vandalism. Please don't continue with this one man/woman mission after mediation didn't support you and three other editors don't either. References are references... does exactly what it says on the tin --NorthernCounties (talk) 14:10, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry to tell you, but you're quite wrong. I don't have any agenda and I do not delete references because I do not agree with them. You call them references, but none of those in question refer to Rocha to be an Irish citizen and if they did they would be incorrect since Rocha has at no point naturalised as so. Please do not attempt to bully me. Qwerta369 (talk) 14:19, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not bullying you. I can't see why you don't let it be. Partaking in edit warring only serves to invalidate even the best of arguements. Validation is also not needed when multiple articles, websites or whatever else you care to call references confirm it. --NorthernCounties (talk) 14:26, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nationality is about more that citizenship, which is a straightforward legal status. This was pointed out at the mediation page, and was not disputed there. Sources that are generally considered reliable have ascribed Irish nationality to Rocha. It does not preclude him having other 'identities' . I really don't understand this single-minded determination to do battle over a question of 'apples and oranges'. By the way, why is this discussion hapenning here and not at the mediation page? RashersTierney (talk) 14:30, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Because the mediation had come to a close, and an other editor not involved thought it was time to remove the validation needed tag. This sparked the edit war to begin. Thank you for injecting some sense into this, and sorry to clog up your personal talk page. Finally, there is definitely no need for further discussion and/or mediation. --NorthernCounties (talk) 14:37, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that is your call to make, NorthernCounties. If Wikipedia is a credible encyclopaedia, it cannot contain untrue statements. In reply to RashersTierney, Irish nationality has not been awarded to John Rocha. He is not an Irish national and has never claimed to be. Rocha is resident in the state of Ireland and is eligible to apply for Irish nationality based on his length of residence in Ireland and/or on his marriage to an Irish national, but until an application is made and is subsequently granted, John Rocha is not and does not claim to be an Irish national. Qwerta369 (talk) 14:51, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

John Rocha's birthplace

[edit]

Hello Rashers. Your most recent edit adds that Rocha was 'British-born'. This is contradicted by his own web site at http://www.johnrocha.ie, which says that he was born in Hong Kong. See the bottom line of the home page: "John Rocha is a Hong Kong born designer based in Ireland." Please fix this. The edit warring case is still open as of this moment and all parties should be careful. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 02:37, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please take it up at the relevant Talk Page. That's the usual practice. The mess that currently applies at that article has been the result of others' 'collaboration'. My only input, as you should be aware, was a single revert of an edit misconstrued as vandalism, in order to halt an edit war. RashersTierney (talk) 08:34, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Linking etc

[edit]

It's pretty standard to not link the country, compare the FA-class Slayer, The Beatles, Nirvana (band), Metallica etc. It's not universally done so I won't get too hung up about it, but I can't really see the purpose of having Ireland linked; someone wanting to find out more about the area where Thin Lizzy formed are far more likely to click on Dublin, and in any case that links to Republic of Ireland. But like I said it's such a stupid thing that I don't really want to get into a pointless edit war over it. Cheers, doomgaze (talk) 00:17, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I understand where you're coming from but think the pipelink at the infobox is useful due to the 'Ireland' ambiguity issue. The two consecutive reverts without discussion was a bit crass on my part. Apologies. RashersTierney (talk) 00:50, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hey no worries. I see your point too, perhaps we could change it to 'Dublin, Republic of Ireland'? doomgaze (talk) 17:15, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not as simple as it might first appear. This specific issue regarding the name of the Irish state has been debated ad nauseam and for years here. Aspects were even the subject of an ArbCom decision. The current practice re the name of the state in articles is provided here at IMOS. Welcome to the Twilight Zone. RashersTierney (talk) 17:38, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear lord, this is almost like the whole en dash and em dash situation, better leave it as it is. I see the article is a good article nominee, I guess should the person reviewing it have a problem with the infobox then it can always be changed then. Cheers for that link, I wasn't aware of any issues regarding Ireland vs Republic of Ireland, I'll keep an eye out should I have to use either. doomgaze (talk) 17:48, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No prob. Best. RashersTierney (talk) 17:51, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

left you a request

[edit]

I went ahead and changed the first sentence, in line with reasoning I outlined on the talk page of Roma in Hungary. Can you please change the title of the article to "Hungarian Roma" in line with the reasoning I express in the same place? I don't know how to do that. THanks. 188.157.230.192 (talk) 11:43, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your advice, I will just continue to edit that article. It would be useful if you could help rename it. 188.157.230.192 (talk) 11:59, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Replied at Talk:Roma in Hungary. Lets keep the discussion in one place shall we, and see what, if anything, others have to say. RashersTierney (talk) 12:03, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of museums in the Republic of Ireland

[edit]

Hi! I don´t know "Province" and "Region" for "Kerry Bog Village Museum" in the List of museums in the Republic of Ireland, could you possibly complete the entry? --YvonneM (talk) 00:38, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi you too YvonneM. I don't know either at this God-forsaken-hour, but I'll take a look in the morning. Keep up the good work. RashersTierney (talk) 00:47, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I'm assuming it's of the same pattern as the next entry in the table - 'Kerry County Museum' - namely 'Province' = 'Munster' and 'Region' = 'South-West' pipelinked to 'NUTS 3 statistical regions of the Republic of Ireland' (as are all the entries in this field afaict). RashersTierney (talk) 07:17, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Mmm! I've changed the pipe to 'South-West Region, Ireland' as it seems more directly relevant. RashersTierney (talk) 07:26, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Thanks! --YvonneM (talk) 10:36, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sarah's block

[edit]

I will always defend my friend. My only problem with this right now is that I feel that (my perceived) guilt by association is going to cloud the thoughts of people I otherwise am willing to listen to. I get the sense that lately several comments about being a "follower" and "clueless" are directed my way. I am friendly with the woman, she does not inform my thinking any more than I inform hers, however. There is a lot to be said for reading is all I can say to those who don't get that. I offer support in return to you for taking up the argument against Cailil. Best, Sswonk (talk) 03:53, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

On Romani people and Athinganoi

[edit]

disproportionate - broke flow of text - covered at Names of the Romani people, - perhaps could be expanded there

I don't think it's disproportionate; if it were only for Greek etymology, the present text would perhaps be enough. But it also makes sense for the name in many other languages.Greek has both Egyptians and Athinganoi for this people(this is circular and obvious of course cause Greek seems to the origin of both the names). But other languages have predominantly only either one (like english -> gypsies and german -> zigeuner). And it would be helpful for people to know. I don't think that being covered at Names of the Romani people (which in fact isn't fully covered there;what is more covered there is the history of the heresy-cult that initially had the name and so on) suffices.

What I do I agree with is that it indeed breaks the flow and that therefore it should be expanded there or somewhere else in the text by someone better in expressing himself in English than me. Anyway that's my opinion. Will copy this at the article's talk page and let the crowd decide. :)

If you click on the link verifiability, either here or on your Talk Page, you will see that it is not enough for something to be true in order to be included in Wikipedia. Even a reference in a local newspaper may be sufficient for the purpose required, but please do not continue to post without some corroboration from a reliable source (ie not self-published, blogs or social network sites). RashersTierney (talk) 13:26, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Replies at Talk:British nationality law and the Republic of Ireland‎. RashersTierney (talk) 00:47, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In editing the article on Scotch-Irish, I mentioned that Scots find the use of "scotch" pejorative, referencing a wiki article as the source. Which in turn referenced it's source. If one article is acceptable, surely the other is too.

Galbraith's use of the term Scotch is revealing in demonstrating the usage of a Canadian speaking about his own community; and certainly his use of the term is not pejorative. This is an example of how older uses of words and forms continue in communities of expatriates broken off from their original roots, in this case in the 18th century when 'Scotch' was the prevailing term. Similarly, the Scots who settled in Ulster, many of whom later emigrated, are known non-pejoratively in North America as the Scotch-Irish. It was the native Scots who rejected the usage of "Scotch" which had been adopted from England after the 1707 Act of Union. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.33.235.65 (talk) 19:01, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Irish neutrality during World War II

[edit]

Rashers, in the section you started "Reunification in return for joining the war" I think you have confused the Random House edition that you cited with the other 2 that were actually cited in the article; see my comments.Red Hurley (talk) 10:20, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Quick response. I think the difference in interpretation hangs on whether there was an unambiguous offer to end partition from London to Dublin, over the head of Craig, in return for joining the Allies, or an offer to discuss the matter. Churchill in particular had always been adamant that 'Ulster' would not be coerced into a union with the south against its wishes. Perhaps he did momentarily reverse this policy position, but the reaction of the Dublin government indicates that they at least did not consider this was the case, nor do Churchill's own memoirs support this line of thinking. I'll review the sources again when I get a chance. Best. RashersTierney (talk) 10:59, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly they all kept quiet about it afterwards, but Dev required the British commitment in the first draft to be altered to a "solemn undertaking", a term with significance in international law; it was then altered; then he decided not to continue. Technically there was an offer with terms (by GB), counteroffer (by Dev), acceptance (by GB) and rejection (by Dev) - preliminary negotiations which came to nothing but amounted to something more than a suggestion to discuss the matter. Best,Red Hurley (talk) 06:19, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Irish people

[edit]

Yes, a nation as in a group of people that share a common language, race, descent or history. Members of the Irish nation live in a number of sovereign states around the world, and the state is what the nationality field in the infobox is referring to. It would be linked to either Irish Free State or Republic of Ireland, but, of course, de Valera's life straddled both, so it can't. JonChappleTalk 15:56, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Aircraft Accident Investigation Board

[edit]

RashersTierney,

Article: Aircraft Accident Investigation Board

It only has one "source/reference" and I also put "ref improve". I've seen so many two/three line sentences that doesn't give much details and have asked myself why do these people do not do a reasonable job at writing the article for Wikipedia. For example like a couple of thousand bytes, an Infobox, more than one reference/source? Just to make it a worthwhile read. Adamdaley (talk) 03:22, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A two or three line stub still has value. No-one expects those lines to be the last word on the subject. The purpose of maintenance tags is not to state the obvious, still less to reprimand the initiating editors a la school report: "Little Joey must apply himself harder if he is not to fall behind in the next semester!" If you think a stub can be easily improved, do it; much better than overwhelming it with banner criticisms! Best. RashersTierney (talk) 11:15, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

COI Tag

[edit]

Hello RashersTierney, Drmies re-applied the tag that Northamerica1000 has removed. The tag says that "a major contributor" which refers to me, however, the article has been cleaned out and all my contributions AND MORE has been removed. I do not intend on contributing to the article anymore so do you see any reason for the tag to be there? It clearly shows that the article is completely neutral (that's why Northamerica1000 removed the tag) and I'm no longer a contributor to the article. I hope you agree. Please let me know. Best Regards, Puregoldxxxx (talk) 19:04, 7 October 2011 (UTC).[reply]

The passing of a little time won't hurt here. COI is not a trivial matter, but if the article remains stable for some time without the issue arising again I'll revisit with a view to removal, {so long as there is a reasonable indication of consensus for same). RashersTierney (talk) 13:52, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ainenim! Yea, it got through fine. I'll do some copy editing on some of the articles you've been working on when I get a chance. Don't be a stranger on this page if I can be of any help. Welcome aboard. RashersTierney (talk) 21:54, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thank you Rashers! I appreciate that!!

As you can see, I've been providing links and am trying to learn how to navigate myself around so that the references will link up and list off properly. Hmmm. I can do this in Word documents ... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ainenim (talkcontribs) 22:09, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're doing pretty well. It takes a bit of time, but you'll get up to speed soon enough. RashersTierney (talk) 00:08, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Rashers!

[edit]

Thank you, Rashers! As you can see, I've started to get the hang of the references.

I have made a mistake though. I saw that Balgriffin had no references so I decided to start to lay it out a bit better and add references. I put in one silly one and the system rejected it, reverting back to original. I read that there is a revert/undo mechanism.

Would you be able to undo it for me and take the poor reference out? (I was going to use it as a 'see more' link but that didn't work out, obviously.)

I'd appreciate if you would do that. Hope I'm not breaking rules by being needy...

Thank you again, Ainenim — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ainenim (talkcontribs) 00:14, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ainenim. I've added a Reference section ( with reflist) to the article so that references should now appear when applied. Your addition was removed by a 'bot', (a piece of software that carries out maintenance tasks automatically), so it is essentially 'gone'. Apparently the bot read your attempt to apply a reference as an External link. Do you want it re-applied as a ref? It seems to be a reliable source.

[edit]

It was decent of you to set up the referencing section, thanks very much.

I'll polish Clongriffin and then what I'd really like to do is open up a site for Bayside Bay.

While working on the history section, I realised that not only the international community but also local children who doing school projects quickly land on this site. With that in mind, I'd also like to upgrade and reference the local historical sites.

I had no idea that there is a community of people behind Wikipedia until an hour before I heard from you. Is it rude of me to ask you for some help setting Bayside Bay up?

Thanks again for helping me with the references. I appreciate that, Ainenim — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ainenim (talkcontribs) 13:07, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Its not at all rude. Welcome in fact. I'll probably be 'off Wiki' for the weekend, but happy to discuss your proposal early next week. (don't forget about signing 'the 4 squiggles', or the special 'signing button') Best. RashersTierney (talk) 13:17, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ans: I guess that means that I shouldn't apply references as external links. I think you are referring to DCC-Fr Collins Park site. It showed up in purple. I was trying to make it like the 128 bus connection that someone had put there before me. I can make that a reference, if it isn't gone.

The 'bot' doesn't delete entire pages of work over one small error, does it?

That particular template doesn't have a "documentation" page to explain how it's used, so I can see why you're having problems. It's probably best just to click on "What links here" in the Toolbox on the left-hand side of the template page, and have a look at some articles that it's used on to see how it's implemented. Hope this helps, --RFBailey (talk) 17:24, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. That is what I finally did. Some incorporate a school crest. I was wondering if it is an easy fix to include a line for an image of the school itself, as at Template:Infobox school: can a line of code be 'pasted' from one to the other? Wiki etiquette

[edit]

Hello again Rashers, As I am very new to Wiki and plan to open a page for Bayside Bay (see above), I wonder if I should be introducing myself ... (to whom I don't know).

As you can see, I updated Clongriffin site, putting considerable time and effort into it with plenty of references. Whoever wrote the original piece, reverted the Amenities & Facilities section to how it was, which was entirely out of date. (For example, Clongriffin no longer has a chemist/pharmacy and since Quinnsworth changed hands, the plans to open a store have been cancelled.)

I don't want to get into petty arguing with someone who I don't even know, especially over entirely subjective details. (It is my understanding that the whole concept behind Wiki is objective information and that history goes into the history section.) It is not my intention to hurt the feelings of those who put time and effort into setting the page up in the first place. I would much prefer to work amicably.

Do you have any comments to make or advice to give? I do not want to tread on the toes of others who spend lots of time on this site.

Thank you again, AinenimAinenim (talk) 14:56, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PS Wiki Etiquette

[edit]

PS: Also, my friend who helped me get started on Wiki told me that the previous author has insinuated an editing war. I need to make contact with that person but don't yet know how. Here is the comment

"From SskD13:

"(Sad - after years of careful writing by community, in 4 days this was "dolled up" - 250+ edits, some ok material and some pure marketing - I guess the developers trying again after Priory Hall (user does not know normal conventions). Repairs begin..)""

As you have kindly offered me assistance, would you mind please contacting SskD13 and asking if s/he would please send me a message directly? ainenim

That way, I can respond and introduce myself. I am a resident of Clongriffin and certainly not a developer. I too have pyrite so I know all about the feelings that come with its issues.

Nevertheless, Clongriffin is a new town and is experiencing a huge population boom. With plenty of babies, young children and some teenagers, I have talked with many of the parents of Clongriffin who don't know the neighbourhood so well. Essentially, by writing up the history and pointing out the fact that it is possible to go for plenty of walks. As I said before, I laid out the historical details mostly with children in mind, but also for their parents and teachers.

I need to convey that to the person who is currently putting sections back to how they are, some with incorrect information, etc.

I am entirely grateful for your time and guidance.Ainenim (talk) 16:09, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your kind message to SeoR on my behalf

[edit]

Hello Rashers (& SeoR), I am Ainenin and I thank you for the messages that you left me. Yes, I am new to Wiki, having signed up only last week. I very much appreciate your help.

To introduce myself, I am female, grew up in North East Dublin, and came to the site for educational purposes. My intention has been to create a Bayside Bay site but first I have to rise to the challenge of learning the technicalities of the Wiki system.

Also, as you both know, I have been abused for updating and further opening the Clongriffin site.

I admit that I arrived in almost complete ignorance. Upon my arrival, the Clongriffin site was out of date by at least six months, it was full of speculation and subjective opinion, vastly un-referenced, and looked more like a blog than a Wiki site. It seemed to be abandoned and I thought it was as good as any other place to cut my teeth, so I proceeded to clean it up. (I now live in Clongriffin and my neighbour gave me a hand setting up on Wiki. I currently have neighbours who are from the outside Dublin and/or Ireland. Most of them don't even know Grange Abbey exists or that they can walk out to the estuary from the train station so I thought it would be a nice way to thank them for their help by posting that sort of info first.)

I am sorry that I upset people. Rashers has kindly sent me instructions for writing an open apology. I have not done that yet because I have been busy the last few days and to be honest, I was so upset by the nastiness that I actually lost sleep. There are clearly angry and ignorant people lurking about on the Clongriffin site. I am not interested in fighting blindly on the internet.

To clarify, I don't know if you can tell what I was up to step-by-step, but essentially I cleaned up the civic information, updated the facilities etc, and then grappled with extensive tagging and referencing in the natural geographic and history section. As I said, while I was working away, I thought I was in an empty, abandoned space. I had no idea that I was being watched and criticised. If I had known that (a) I probably would have worked more offline, (b) I would have introduced myself properly so as not to offend those who had opened the site before me, and (c) had I known that Wiki harbours ignorami, I wouldn't have bothered because I don't appreciate being slagged off and abused, especially when my intentions are altruistic.

RashersTierny thankfully has been very kind and generous. I thought he approached me because I triggered a need for some technical assistance but I actually now understand that is a gentleperson. I am most grateful.

Following the Wiki abuse that I took, I have questioned if I should carry on or not. But this is not a vanity project. I am an educator and I still want the children to learn about the estuary, the bay, the local rivers, streams, wells, birds, nature, etc, and I find now that I can’t resist but want to fill in the history sections for them too.

Ultimately, I cannot go on without further assistance. I can’t yet open new information pages, comment on what I’ve done, or bear being abused on-line. I can quickly learn the technicalities but I’m afraid that I might never be able to suffer fools gladly.

Opening Wiki Pages: If either or both of you are interested, I would very much appreciate if either of you would open Bayside Bay, Bayside Estuary and Grange Abbey pages for me, or should I say, the local children and curious or interested adults.

http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_abbeys_and_priories_in_Ireland#County_Dublin

Polite Notices: I admit that I got completely distracted by Grange Abbey, and then I got carried away with St Samson. I have updated the history on Balgriffin and also added a small bit of info and some references to the Samson of Dol site. I would like to let the original authors know that my intentions are respectful and that my additions are there to enhance the site. I need to learn how to do that.

Clongriffin Open Page: Even though they didn’t have to barge in, kicking sand around and being so rude and mean about the work that I put in (which took hours of my time), in self defence I referenced nearly every sentence I wrote, tagging extensively as I went along. I stress that I thought I was working quietly in a forgotten corner or else I would have fully referenced every sentence straight away.

I am sorry that I upset people … Some points they made had some merit but I remind you that I simply hadn’t finished the work.

For example, Clongriffin is not a town, but it is a residential area in its own right. I’ve got the referencing and can apply it.

Clongriffin is no more ‘North Donaghmede’ than it is ‘South Portmarnock’. This is ridiculous inverted snobbery. I might not have learned the technicalities of Wiki yet, but I do know academics and I have the references for this too.

Wiki does not approve of individuals using the site as a blog. All information should be tagged and referenced appropriately. I can do that if you like but if it results in other locals hurling insults at me ... Would either of you like to discuss this further?

Historical Sites/Grange Abbey: As a local with a great interest in early medieval history, I thought I clearly emphasised that Grange Abbey was more of a granary than an actual Abbey.

Times have changed. Nowadays, some of us are more impressed by fantastic architectural delights such as the new Father Collins Park and Dundrum Shopping Centre than we are by substance and sound engineering. Nevertheless, the Grange monastic site was a priory and of profound importance. Besides the fact that it deserves to be acknowledged as much as, let’s say, Kylmore Abbey. (Even the holiest among us have to eat.)

Malahide and Sutton chapels are also named Abbeys. [I think this is because St Samson was an Abbot when he arrived in Ireland with two Irish monks to visit Howth. He was a noble of Irish descent so it wasn’t long before he was given some land to start his own settlement. I think the local ‘Abbeys’ got their names because they were associated with the Welsh Abbe. I am reading on that and looking for references to back me up.]

It seems that there are thugs on site who think I am trying to "dolly" things up. I am not trying to gild the lily but it at the same time, I don't want to overlook such a significant site. It deserves better treatment. Personally, I believe it should be restored. King Henry VIII did huge damage when he invaded. It is amazing that the original chapel still stands.

Perhaps by the time you saw it, someone had gone in and fiddled it. (I noticed that some wording was changed, clearly before actually reading the references.)

Nevertheless, I would like to further expand. In the 11th century, Grange Abbey was founded, but that does not clarify the age of the site. I was planning on expanding that. How do you feel about this? Am I supposed to be asking for permission? I’d like to know, thank you. If SeoR is interested in this area, I’d be very happy to discuss it further.

Also, I’d like to fill in the history of Donaghmede, St Donagh’s well and river (which mark Donaghmede, not Donaghmede-South), his infamous apiaries and mead.

However, if the ‘North/South’ Donaghmede brigade want to shout me down and abuse them I’ll either want to turn off my computer and carry on my work elsewhere. Like I said, I don’t want to be arguing with anyone so perhaps it is best to leave well enough alone.

How do either of you, especially SeoR, feel about this?

If you are interested in the educational side of things, then I would be entirely grateful to you for technical assistance and some etiquette training so that I don’t offend anyone else.

Thank you both for having so kindly offered me assistance and taking the time to read my message(s). I hope I hear from you again.

I have to work now but I can check at night time if any messages came in from either of you. Ainenim (talk)

I don't know why, but I keep referring to Bayside Bay. Please excuse. I mean BALDOYLE BAY. Ainenim (talk) 11:23, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You've said a lot there, and I'd like take some time to respond , but the main thing I'd like to say is I'm glad to hear from you, as I was a bit worried you might 'throw in the towel'. You certainly have no reason to write an apology, open or otherwise. That was never my intention. Editing on Wikipedia can be quite a culture shock at the start (and can sometimes be frustrating to the point of distraction the longer you stay around :- ). All I can say in that regard is that your efforts are appreciated and you will become familiar with the 'cut and thrust' of editing on 'the encyclopedia that anyone can edit'. Try not to take criticism too much to heart, certainly nothing here is worth loosing sleep over! Discussion with other interested editors (not necessarily those who agree with your point of view, perhaps particularly those you disagree with) is the best way of ensuring that material content remains stable and not subject to endless removal and re-application. I think you and SeoR, who clearly also appreciates your efforts (as I'm sure others do, who may not have said so), should discuss possible content issues between yourselves. You are both clearly more informed on this region than I am. 'Nil desperandum', or to put it crudely illegitimi non carborundum, (not that I think there are any 'illegitimi' on Wikipedia, as that would seemingly violate a core principle :- ) Best. RashersTierney (talk) 12:14, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again Rashers, You are a funny person and I was rolling around laughing at your message! Thank you so much for your assistance and encouragement. I've decided that I want to carry on with the work on Baldoyle Bay and some of the nearby historical sites. I will go back to Clongriffin and comment on what I did but I need to learn a bit more about Wikipedia first. For example, do other editors have the right to bully and slander? If not, are they reported or disabled? Meanwhile, I have learned how to make site comments and have had a go practicing with Balgriffin first. When I am confident that I am doing that correctly, I will return to Clongriffin to clear things up. Thank you for assuring and inspiring comments. I appreciate very much your time and assistance. Derrida: The Quarrel with John Searle

[edit]

Dear Mr RashersTierney

I made some changes to my entry in "Derrida: The Quarrel with John Searle" from yesterday. You were right on your critics, I used to much Derrida's quotations ("Too much borrowes text"), and added to much. I'm sorry. I hope it's more concise and strait to the point that matters.

I believe you agree this part of the entry was quite poor, giving to much attention to an impolit behavior from Searle that we shouldn't backup in anyway. I tried to limit my quotations to Derrida's answer and move on to much more serious subjects about Derrida's critics on Searle work around "intentionality" and his main arguments against Austin, Searle and, in a certain way, all analytical tradition.

I believe people that search the wikipedia are more interested in this kind of arguments and information than sad behaviour in the media from respectable scholars regarding there peers (in philosophy, in economics, biology, physics and in all other areas). I believe ou agree that it would become a sad show if academic debate turned out to this kind of gossip and insults on the media.

Sincerely Rui Mascarenhas p.s. Sorry if my English is not perfect. I'm sure the community will be able to correct me without censure me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hibrido Mutante (talkcontribs) 11:31, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pro-FF editing and justifying murder and torture.

[edit]

I dispute your claims of personal commentary on Brian Cowen, it is the truth. My family suffers at the hands of post-Cowen society and many I know are suffering badly too, in hospitals and on the unemployment lines. My future is in question as a student. This is the fault of Cowen and Cowen alone. I am remaking my editing and reporting you to Wikipedia for having vested Fianna Fail interests. Furthermore, your obvious approval of Cowen's actions leans to approval of murder and torture. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.100.227.56 (talk) 16:38, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Think I'll keep this one, just for the record. Certainly the first time I've been accused of having pro-FF tendencies on or off Wiki, much less 'vested Fianna Fail interests'. As for my supposed 'approval of murder and torture'; a retort to assume good faith seems just a bit inadequate. RashersTierney (talk) 17:31, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, are you a fellow person of the Left? Iloveandrea (talk) 20:42, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I prefer to keep them guessing around here! RashersTierney (talk) 20:51, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ha ha ha! ;D Iloveandrea (talk) 21:40, 9 January 2012 (UTC) If you have a second and feel the urge, do cast your eye over my rehash of the Hobsbawm article and make some changes/suggestions! I'm pretty much done on what I was going to do with it, though it turned out to be rather more than I anticipated at the start. Iloveandrea (talk) 02:02, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have been casting the odd 'cold eye' over developments. All seems present and correct, as they say. Haven't parsed for 'overall balance', but no doubt if there is a major faux pas it will be brought to attention. Good work. See you around. RashersTierney (talk) 02:14, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In response to spelling change notifications: I understand your point, but please do not create a page just to say you don't want me to change the spelling. An email would be preferred. Not to worry. The servers can handle it. RashersTierney (talk) 23:30, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article

[edit]

Thanks for your input, it was very much welcomed! :) WinterIsComingOdran (talk) 14:51, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No prob. The article still needs a lot of work, but good luck. If you think I can help with something specific, just drop a note here. Best. RashersTierney (talk) 14:53, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it needs work, I added a stub template, thanks all the same. WinterIsComingOdran (talk) 15:08, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was about to give my reasons for removing the speedy template at the discussion when I found it marked 'closed'. There may still be an issue with notability which could be challenged in the usual manner. RashersTierney (talk) 15:24, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking the same, I reopened it. WinterIsComingOdran (talk) 15:26, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disruptive editing by user Gunnai?

[edit]

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. The thread is "Disruptive editing by user Gunnai?". Thank you.--Francis Flinch (talk) 12:32, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Though the DRN thread has been closed (DRN is only for content, not conduct, disputes), I have filed a sockpuppet investigation here. You might want to hold off taking the matter anywhere else until you see the result there. — TransporterMan (TALK) 16:48, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks btw. A great pity MFIreland has chosen to 'buck the system'. Clearly a knowledgeable contributor, but their editing style invariably leads to drama and conflict. Their status is not beyond redemption, but that issue is firmly in their court. RashersTierney (talk) 14:34, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a possible way forward wrt Peter O'Shaunessy's Contribution attempts. Could, would you work with to actually help redraft Peter's content to satisfy wikipedia standards? Kind regards, Matthew (talk) 13:12, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm happy to help out so long as we can maintain a collegial atmosphere. That means adherence to policy, appropriate referencing and a willingness to discuss before dramatic edits. If they are willing to do so I would also support an unblock request, which they would have to initiate at their TP. Best. RashersTierney (talk) 14:24, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm all for that too. Peter was a Drama Professor so I guess that's one reason why he seems so strongly determined to express his opinions however over time I'd be happy to help Peter by consensus with other wikiEditors redraft. There's a lot & I'm not in a position right at this time to do that much but will do as I'm able. Cheers, Matthew (talk) 15:35, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, I didn't see that it was copyrighted.--P.4.P. No. 1 (talk) 14:15, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Even if not expressly stated as copyright, it's best to assume that other's content is, well, theirs. RashersTierney (talk) 14:22, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

hi re effin page

[edit]

Angeldharma (talk) 00:04, 10 February 2012 (UTC)hi im relatively new to wiki and trying to update the Effin wiki page. finally got photo on but some i put on from limerick diocese were removed even though i said where i got them from. but im learning. i did what you ask but my nickname is showing on the page. is it only me can see this? there is a lot in doing a wiki page. i know there are some citations missing and will try and get a citation for Tim Hannon etc., need to check in library for ref. thanks for any pointers you can give.[reply]

Not to worry, Angeldharma. It can appear very daunting here at the beginning. Your Username is your public identifier on Wikipedia and is how you are recognised here amongst the 'community'. If you have concerns about your present name it can be changed, if you really think it important for privacy reasons or whatever. Let me know if that is something you think you need to do. References don't have to be on the web. Local newspapers for local articles are generally fine. If you need help with formatting a particular reference, drop me a line here and we can discuss it at your User talk page before applying it to an article. Adding images can be frought, and copyright is a big concern. I'll take a look at the one you tried to add and see where we can go. Best. RashersTierney (talk) 00:46, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
