content box

hi ram, how can i create a content box in my article? Devanshi tripathi (talk) 10:46, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Devanshi tripathi

Hey Devanshi!
Please share some example link of any article so that I'll get a better idea what you are looking for.
Cheers,

Devanshi tripathi (talk) 11:12, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Devanshi tripathi
Got it, so you need a TOC or Table of contents, for that your article should have atleast 3 sections == Section == .
Alternatively, you can put the "magic" word _TOC_ on top, and it will create a TOC forcefully(it's not a recommended approach although!)
I hope it'll help!

Lindahl tax

hi again, most of my text in the articles, Lindahl tax and critical minimum effort got deleted under copyrght violation, as i had taken most of it from a book. i am confused about firstly where do i get information for my topic if i am not allowed to refer to any books or sites, secondly is there any way by which i can get my articles back so that i can change the text and write it in my own words. please help!!!! Devanshi tripathi (talk) 16:37, 6 September 2011 (UTC)Devanshi tripathi

ALSO i want to know how can i put up my article for "did you know?" Devanshi tripathi (talk) 13:37, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey Devanshi!
You are allowed to take stuff from a book or site, but you need to rephrase it, and put references to avoid copyright violation issue.
You can get your article back from the "View History" page, and try to locate by date you made changes or before it got deleted.

Unfortunately you can not nominate your article for DYK, because it's not complying with DYK Guidelines. But there's a good news, you can nominate your article for a Good Article and later on for Featured Article. But before you go ahead and nominate your article for GA(Good Article), try to add images, references etc and make it some sort of complete and afterwards proceed with the nomination.
Numbers wise:
"Currently, of the 3,730,738 Wikipedia articles, presently 12,743 are categorized as good articles (about 1 in 293), most of which are listed below. An additional 3,374 are listed as featured articles (about 1 in 1,110) and 2,112 as featured lists (about 1 in 1,770). Articles are only included on one list, so when a good article is promoted to featured status, it is removed from the good articles list. Adding good and featured articles and lists gives a total of 18,229 articles (about 1 in 205)"

Sir, I have read information about IRC. I read information on [1]. Accordingly, after getting apt ircII, I read its man page. I tried to use moodle server but it was not possible. Hello agsin. It was awesome meeting you in the CA training. As I discussed with you, I've been trying hard to format this table but I'm going nowhere. Just can you show me how to do one thing? My Sandbox Go to my sandbox...there is a table there...Just can you bring down the a> and the Mega Cities such that a> occupies only the first column, i.e. Sl.no. while Mega Cities occupies the rest of the three columns??

Thanks a bunch... Debastein1 (talk) 14:17, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

I would really like to know how to send WikiLove. Could you help????

Renaming Page Title

Dear Ram I have almost completed my article on Fixed exchange rate system. I would appreciate your suggestions as to any changes I could make to the formatting of the page. Also, is there any way i can change the title of the article to "Fixed E xchange Rate System" instead of the present "Fixed exchange rate system" (capitalising the words). Regards Sridevi (SSE, T.Y. Group B) Sridevi Tolety (talk) 15:13, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Sri!
There are various options to rename the page, but the simplest of them here.
I've moved the page for you, just have a look :)
Cheers,
Ram (talkcontribs) 16:47, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
Hey Sri!
Suggestions first...
  • Correct the fixed exchange rate system to Fixed Exchange Rate System.
  • Avoid using external links in your article, it disrupts the flow. A better way of doing it is putting them in External Links section
  • " Members were required to establish a parity of their national currencies in terms of the US dollar and to maintain exchange rates within plus or minus 1% of parity (a "band") by intervening in their foreign exchange markets (that is, buying or selling foreign money). The U.S. agreed separately to link the dollar to gold at the rate of $35 per ounce of gold."
Please cite references if you are stating facts!!!
  • Use to break a section, for e.g., "Excess Demand for Dollars" section is overlapping with the Fig:2.
  • Put more links(within Wikipedia uing square brackets), and put more references.
Apart from the points I mentioned above, your article is looking great!, esp. the diagrams. I liked the infobox as well :)
Cheers,
Ram (talkcontribs) 17:17, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Dear Ram Thank you so much!!!!! Your tips really helped, the article looks a lot better! I think I have completed it, but I'll give it a couple more final edits. I have put section breaks near the graphs, it looks more neat and presentable now. Thank you for moving the page! Regards Sridevi Tolety (SSE, T.Y. Group B) Sridevi Tolety (talk) 01:31, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

images

hey ram, i have uploaded a few graphs to wikipedia commmons, as i needed to put them up for my article Lindahl tax i am having problems in enlarging the image. please help!!! http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Lindahl_tax#Lindahl_tax_and_Pareto_optimality Devanshi tripathi (talk) 05:07, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey Devanshi!
To increase the size of thumbnails all you need to do is to specify the width and height in pixels.

for eg. ,
the 500px after thumb| is width followed by height, px stands for pixels.

One suggestion is not to stack images, so you can put some on left, some on right and rest if you like on center.
I've done it for first two images in your article, have a look and apply it on other images.
One more suggestion, in Person 1 demand curve image you can corp the white space so that it won't take much space.
Cheers,
Ram (talkcontribs) 05:22, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Lindahl tax is happy

hey Ram thanks a lot, i understood the image part of it. :) my article looks much better now. Just another query, many students were asking that if we upload a copyrighted image on wikipidia commons and then put it on the article will that still be counted as a copyvio? Devanshi tripathi (talk) 13:28, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey Devanshi!
Copyrights still hold if you upload it on Commons, but they can upload images which have Creative Common licencing.
Cheers,
Ram (talkcontribs) 14:16, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

ARTICLE REVIEW

Hey Ram can you please review my article Lindahl tax and leave comments on the discussion page, we have been told to do so as one of the deadlines. please let me know if any changes have to be made before doing them yourself, il do the needful Devanshi tripathi (talk) 14:29, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

It's shaping up amazingly well!
Few points to make it awesome:
  • Making equation Bold and bigger
  • Adding bullet points if possible
  • Adding more figures if possible
  • Adding a infobox, for e.g., Taxation
Other than the points stated above, this article is fantastic!!!
Keep the good work!

Lindahl tax

hi Ram, will you please rate my article Lindahl tax Devanshi tripathi (talk) 04:58, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Done!
Ram (talkcontribs) 06:01, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Please explain to all your students that they must not copy material into Wikipedia. Ask them to read Wikipedia:Copy-paste which explains the problem clearly. I see that some have already been blocked for this, but I have just had to delete another article which was a straight copy - see User talk:Piyushshekdar19#Copyright problems with 80386 debugging. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 09:13, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi John, We are facing this problem all over, we have started sending strong message through faculty and directors as well as taking sessions on CopyVio in various sessions. As the deadlines are approaching we might see these problems rising but we are doing our bit to convey right message!

thank you Ram :) you are the best CA :) Devanshi tripathi (talk) 10:16, 14 September 2011 (UTC) Also i have started writing my 2nd article Critical minimum effort theory please go through it and drop your suggestions on the discussion page, and i know you are not good at this :) but it would be very kind of you to rate this article as well. can you give suggestions for an infobox for my article ?? Buddhist Economics

Hi! I'm Prarthana Rao from Symbiosis School of Economics. Just finished my article on Buddhist economics. Please let me know what you think. Totally open to suggestions. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prarthana rao (talkcontribs) 11:41, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey Prarthana!
Your article is looking great indeed, I read almost all of it!
I liked the Buddha image with Rs.500 note, one small suggestion add a caption to the image or remove the existing one!
One more thing, it also looks a bit biased towards Buddhist Philosophy but that's okay, is it possible for you to add a section like Criticism/Advantages/Disadvantage etc.
Everything else is amazing indeed!
I would also suggest you to nominate this article for [Wikipedia:Did_you_know] or DYK.
Keep the good work!
Cheers,

A tag has been placed on Wikipedia talk:Ram, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

We do not need a Wikipedia namespace page just for one user. (Also, gonna stop notifying him, to avoid spamming him.)

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

Query

Hi Ram, one student wants to work on a theory, theory of development, on which no article exists as of now. it is quite a big theory and there is sufficient matter in it and references as well. the theory has been given by schumpeter, the problem is that there already exists a very good article on schumpeter, so can she create a new article? or does she have to add to the already existing article on schumpeters? just check and let me know soon, she needs to start working on her article :) Joseph Schumpeter Devanshi tripathi (talk) 06:40, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Devanshi!
I think she can go ahead with "The Theory of Economic Development", I didn't find any related article for that and it seems that ample resources are available on net for it.
I'll suggest her to add a new section on Schumpeter's article on "The Theory of Economic Development" and put a link stating main article which redirect it to her article(I hope it's not confusing!).
Tell her best of luck from me as well!

another thing is that i have uploaded a picture but i need to crop it as i cant get a proper size.... please help!!! Critical minimum effort theory Devanshi tripathi (talk) 07:04, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Ok so i have nominated my article Lindahl tax for a "good article" thats fine right? and what is the next step now? Devanshi tripathi (talk) 17:15, 15 September 2011 (UTC) Devanshi tripathi (talk) 17:31, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey Devanshi!
First of all a big CONGRATS! for nominating your article for GA(Good Article). The next step is to wait, coz someone will pick and review your article and if he/she finds it good as well it would be promoted as a Good Article.
In case if the reviewer suggests some improvement, we'll do it and again put a new nomination.
I'm really happy and proud at this moment :)
Cheers,
Ram :)

Thank you so much Ram :)

i will eagerly wait now for some one kind enough to review my article :)

Devanshi tripathi (talk) 04:08, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Fingers crossed!
Ram (talkcontribs) 06:18, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey Ram,

Please check my GA review page. I have a comment there and give your suggestions :) Devanshi tripathi (talk) 12:59, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Devanshi!
First of all I'm happy that your article got comment from Kiefer, all I'll say is to do the suggested changes and send it for another round of review. Kiefer seems to be a economist, and I can't challenge his review, but if you adhere with his suggestions we'll end up with an awesome article indeed!
It's a learning curve for you as well!
Secondly, I want you to put your name off from the reviewer of "Robinson Crusoe Economy" and let it to be reviewed by someone who's as good as Kiefer. Don't feel bad about this but at the end we'll get another awesome article which got reviewed by a subject matter expert.
Cheers,
Ram (talkcontribs) 13:18, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

ok, i will try to make necessary changes, and i did not mean to put up my name as a reviwer it happened by mistake i just wanted to see the reviews, but any way i have removed my name :) Devanshi tripathi (talk) 13:33, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Ram, A student seems to be having a lot of issues while working on this article: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Sishya_School. He does not have enough references and the article is apparently not neutral. How should i advise him? Thanks :) Roshnisaigal (talk) 20:07, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Roshni!
It seems that the article got deleted coz it was mostly baised, and doesn't have proper references. I Googled it, and I didn't find many references for this article. So my suggestion to this student is to choose an article which can be easily referenced.
Cheers,

Ram, it looks like one of your students is attempting to create this article. It's full of copyright violations. As with any new article with a copyvio, regardless of whether or not it's written for a course, it has been flagged for a G12 deletion. While this isn't out of the ordinary, I thought you might want to know that a student is plagiarizing. I don't know what your rules are but from my educational experience, any sort of plagiarism usually results in expulsion so I thought it was important enough to let you know about. It might be deleted before you get to take a look at it so let me know if you have any questions. OlYellerTalktome 17:40, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Image in Infobox

Hi Ram, A student is having issues with the infobox in this article. http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Dubai_International_Financial_Centre . Above the infobox, the text is appearing and I cannot seem to figure out how to get rid of it. If you could help me with the same, it would be great. Thanks :) Roshnisaigal (talk) 19:05, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Roshni!
This is one of the most common issue we face when people try to add image to Infobox, the reason for this is the variable "image" in infobox doesn't support , so to get rid of this is to simply put the "Imagename.jpg" and that's it.
Secondly, you cannot put more than one image in infobox, so better way is put the other image outside the infobox. As you are putting the image outside the infobox, is very much supported.
Please go ahead an tell the student how easy it was, and that's it! I'm restraining myself from doing this so that people try it on their own and learn the stuff.
Cheers,
Ram (talkcontribs) 07:40, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Robinson Crusoe says thanks

Hi, thank you for your wonderful suggestions. :) I have incorporated most of them. I'm just a bit unsure about the referencing bit. Most of the important equations/statements are made from a particular book which I've mentioned in the references, so should I keep citing it every time I use it or just leave it as a general reference? Wouldn't it look odd to have [ 1 ] above every other statement? - Abhilasha369 (talk) 17:44, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I have made the necessary changes regarding citing and referencing! Please check out the article once again and please let me know if any other changes are required! Thank you so much!!! Also, my article may be featured in the Wikimedia blog.. I got an email from a wonderful lady asking if I would be interested.. Naturally I said yes! I will keep you updated! :) - Abhilasha369 (talk) 07:40, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi! I need your help please. How do I nominate my article for Did you know status? And also, how can I create a relevant info box for the article? Regards - Abhilasha369 (talk) 12:21, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Should I nominate it (for good article) myself? I've figured out what to do. I have to leave "{{s u b s t :GAN|su b t o p i c = Economics and business } }" this code on the talk page of the article. Regards - Abhilasha369 (talk) 15:51, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

And about the Infobox. The Robinson Crusoe Economy is a branch of Microeconomics.. It's an economic structure/system to study trade, exchange and welfare.. It also touches upon the most important tenets of Microeconomics, ie consumer theory and producer theory (which is also what makes it a system).. I'm still thinking about how else to charecterise the article but this is all I've thought of so far. Abhilasha369 (talk) 15:58, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

How about an infobox like the one here? http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Consumer_choice Of course the links will have to be different. But at least this is a starting point. Abhilasha369 (talk) 16:31, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

I agree with you completely. It doesn't exactly fit in. Any other suggestions on what I can put on the introduction part of the page to fill up all that white space on the right side? So that the article is better linked to the rest of wikipedia? - Abhilasha369 (talk) 01:54, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello! :) I have finally found an appropriate sidebar for the Robinson Crusoe Economy article. Please check it out and see if it makes sense. Also, I've gone live with my other article - Ragnar Nurkse's Balanced Growth Theory. Please give your feedback on that too! Really appreciate it. Thanks and regards. Abhilasha369 (talk) 11:19, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey Abhilasha!
First of all apologies for late reply, I got a bit buzy, but Robinson Crusoe Economy and you are the exemplary figures for Wikipedia India Education Program!
Ragnar Nurkse's artilce is also shaping up great, few suggestions to make it an awesome article are...
  • Make quote in Italic
  • Link to existing wiki articles,e.g., when you are telling about shift in demand, you can like to Demand_curve#Shift_of_a_demand_curve, similarly for Aggregate demand, link it to Aggregate demand and Keynesian theory to Keynesian economics
  • Cite more references for e.g., in "Transport Cost and Trade Barriers" section it states that " Nurkse did not agree with this view though, he was an export pessimist." you need to cite it!
  • If possible put figure/diagrams
Everything else is looking great!
Cheers,
Ram (talkcontribs) 07:27, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

  • Hi again! Thank you for some amazing suggestions. I have started working on them. Thanks for adding the picture to the infobox! I got inspired and also added Alma Matter and the names of the institutions he's worked at :) unfortunately, the latter is not showing up in the infobox, although alma matter is showing nicely. Could you please check out the mistake I'm making with the syntax? Thank you so much - in advance! :) Ragnar Nurkse's Balanced Growth Theory Abhilasha369 (talk) 16:20, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
Hi Abhilasha! I've fixed the syntax, it was a small mistake, you have written "work_institution" whereas it was expecting "institution"
It's looking really cool now!

Hi Abhilasha!
I went through the discussion between you and Jappalang, and I second his thoughts on Copyvio. For I've added a few lines in the permission section as it was taken from Bank of Estonia's publishing, which is a central bank and hope that it's publications are in public domain.
For as Jappalang said it's not "Free" and this is even written on the original image's copyright info, that it's not completely free.
Please don't take it otherwise but having an infobox is also making it redundant, and you might agree with that if you look at this article from a reviewer's perspective.
As of now the whole point of images on this article is make it presentable, but instead of fighting on images can we come up with some more interesting figures etc. like you did in Robinson Crusoe?
I hope you understand.
Cheers,

Hey Abhilasha!
I'm really proud of you for this achievement, great going, let's start for the "Featured Article" process for Robinson Crusoe Economy!
All the best!!!

Hello! Yes, I agreed with Jappalang all along but I just wanted to make sure :) I feel so empowered knowing the IP laws in Estonia!!! :D Even the infobox was inappropriate... I started noticing after he mentioned.. The infoboxes only make sense for biographical articles.. so i have updated it on the Ragnar Nurkse article and have removed it from the theory article :) I also wanted to put up images for this article but unfortunately this topic is very straight forward in its theory. There is no diagram as such. But still, maybe I can upload a flow chart or something similar. I'll think over it, thanks for the idea! :) Thanks and regards Abhilasha369 (talk) 17:11, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey Abhilasha!
I'm happy that you took it in a positive manner and worked on it. I seen your new diagram on Ragnar Nurkse's article, and really liked it,especially the colors, they are quite fresh and cool!
Keep the good work, and keep bugging me :)

Copyvios

Hi Ram. I patrol new pages and often run into new articles that contain copyright violations. Recently, I've found 4 or 5 of them that were created by students in your program. Obviously WP will react according to policy regarding copyvios but I was wondering if you would like me to notify you or anyone else when I find that an article created for your course contains a copyright violation. If you or your program as a whole care to be informed, I was thinking I could either leave a message on your talk page or on the talk page of the course. I think the ambassador project and these courses are really neat and the best way I can think to help is to lend my most used WP skills to assist. If there's any way reviewing new pages can help you, the ambassador program, or any of your courses, please let me know. OlYellerTalktome 14:07, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Ol!
First of all accept my apologies for late reply, I got busy with my work life.
Copyvios are no doubt are the major concern for Education Program, as we are introducing Wikipedia with new editors the simply do "Copy / Paste", I really thankful to community and folks like you who work tirelessly to keep Wikipedia quality standards high.
So regarding the copyvios you found recently, it would be great if you put it on Campus Ambassador's talk page, coz we can easily talk/mail/or meet in person with the guys who's doing it and we'll tell them do's and don'ts.
Thanks a lot once again..keep the good work going!

hello sir, thank you so much for your suggestion regarding maternal nutrition. I have come really far since then. I will be glad if you can just go through my article and give me any more suggestions for improvement :) Swati.suri (talk) 14:59, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

sir, I saw the article on nutrition and pregnancy and realised it is closer to my article. So now I really did not understand your suggestion. Do you want me to abort maternal nutrition and instead work on nutrition and pregnancy? Swati.suri (talk) 16:45, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Ram, I Created a page in hindi for Wikipedia:India Education Program at hi:विकिपीडिया:भारत शिक्षा कार्यक्रम. But now I am not sure whether it should just be a page or a project (like it is in en wiki). Also, should I leave it for the students or can it be developed by anyone. --Mitul0520 (talk) 17:21, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey Mitul,
For now we can just leave a page, coz the current priority is to work on English wikipedia, but later on we'll take it as a another project as we start approaching other colleges.
I hope you understand.
