Rathika Sitsabaiesan

[edit]

Please provide a source indicating Ms. Sitsabaiesan was born in Jaffna. Thank you. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 19:14, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The source is there in a Tamil news media OneIndia Tamil.Rajk2011 (talk) 19:31, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am very much aware that Rathika is an Eelam Tamil.I have high regard for Eelam Tamils. But in that article in was written that she was a Sri Lankan Tamil .This term Sri Lankan Tamil or Ceylon Tamil never made any sense since 1948.Hope I needn't tell you how the Terrorist state of Sri Lanka treats Tamils. If I had changed Sri Lankan Tamil to Eelam Tamil then again some non-Tamil person may engage in senseless arguments. So I changed it to just Tamils. It's a matter of fact that Eelam Tamil is just branch of the Tamil ethnicity.I consider Tamils across countries as 1 people .Hope that Eelam Tamils too feel so.My motive was not to vandalize the article or to claim the achievement of Eelam Tamil brethren as the one of Tamils in Tamil Nadu[Again I repeat that I don't differentiate Tamils based on countries](Arun1paladin (talk) 08:40, 7 May 2011 (UTC)Arun1paladin)[reply]

I appreciate your explanation. I too feel we all just fall into the category of just "Tamil". I am not in the view of, Tamils from Tamil Nadu are trying steal the credits of Eelam Tamils. Tamils in Tamil Nadu are always proud of Eelam Tamils and admire the achievements of Eelam Tamils as their own. But geographically we have different problems as Eelam Tamils and want to identify us into a "Small Group" as Eelam Tamils to come out from the mess and the misery which we are undergoing currently. Thanks.Rajk2011 (talk) 09:01, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just mentioned her ethnicity[Tamil] in the details below her photo. It was earlier deleted by the user named Intoronto125.I am as right in calling her Tamil just as that user is right in calling here a Canadian (Arun1paladin (talk) 05:37, 9 May 2011 (UTC)Arun1paladin)[reply]

I think it would be appropriate if you mention that she is a Canadian of Eelam Tamil descent in the body of the article and write ethnicity as Tamil below her photo. This is my view and I think it's right. It's upto you to decide (Arun1paladin (talk) 04:08, 10 May 2011 (UTC))[reply]

There are some confusion how it should be presented by the editors who are involved. We will come to a lasting conclusion over the time.Regards.Rajk2011 (talk) 05:21, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rathika Sitsabaiesan

[edit]

You have valid points about her ethnicity, but please take the time to read the defintion of ethnicity before reverting my edit. Also, take a look at the list of ethnic groups: [1]. Finally, she has lived over 80% of her life in Canada making her a Canadian-Tamil. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 04:16, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry Canadian Tamil is not a ethnicity, that denotes only a community. It might take sometime another 500 hundred or 1000 years, a community to become a separate ethnicity.Rajk2011 (talk) 14:36, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The name of the article is "ethnic groups". Please stop. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 14:44, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't get into vandalism on Rathika's page, your maturity is questionable on ethnicity issues.Rajk2011 (talk) 14:50, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Maturity, wow if you are not able to read the definition of ethnicity and vandalism one has to question your maturity. Also make sure you indent. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 15:10, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to discuss any more next time on this issue,if you revert any more, I will take this to ANI or go for a Rfc.Rajk2011 (talk) 15:14, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Taking this issue to RfC or some other dispute resolution is probably a good idea at this point. Please don't continue to edit war over the article. Thank you. — Satori Son 15:21, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think that will be the best option.Rajk2011 (talk) 15:29, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Intoronto1125 posted a listing at 3O just as I was messaging them as well. Best of luck to you in resolving this dispute. Thanks again. — Satori Son 15:33, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks.Rajk2011 (talk) 15:35, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My POV: One author (User:Rajk2011) says Sri-Lankan-Tamil, I say Canadian-Tamil. She has lived here since she was five years old (over 80% of her life). In addition on wikipedia's list of ethnic groups Tamil-Canadian is listed. The wiki definition of ethnicity: An ethnic group (or ethnicity) is a group of people whose members identify with each other, through a common heritage, often consisting of a common language, a common culture (often including a shared religion) and an ideology that stresses common ancestry or endogamy. Sri Lankan Tamil and Canadian Tamil have different cultural practices.
Moreover, members of an ethnic group are conscious of belonging to an ethnic group; moreover ethnic identity is further marked by the recognition from others of a group's distinctiveness. Sri Lankan and Canadian Tamil are distinct, she is identified as Canadian Tamil in the following sources: [2], this source [3] she says she is Tamil Canadian indirectly. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 15:47, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The above mentioned both articles [4], [5] speaks of "Tamil-Canadian Community" and not about "Tamil - Canadian Ethnicity". I too agree there is a distinct "Tamil-Canadian Community" is there but there is no distinct "Tamil - Canadian Ethnicity".Rajk2011 (talk) 17:04, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A person who was born in Sri Lanka and still speaks for the "Sri Lankan Tamils" can't suddenly escape from her ethnicity because there is a page on Wikipedia on "Tamil Canadian".Rajk2011 (talk) 16:39, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Your statement, "Sri Lankan Tamil and Canadian Tamil have different cultural practices" is a vague statement. Sri Lankan Tamils who lives in Canada still practice the same culture of their native land. My own brother and my eight first cousins are living in Canada and have the same culture and norms of the Sri Lankan Tamils of all over the world. What I could say once and for all is, "Don't speak rubbish". Rajk2011 (talk) 16:39, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How is it a vague statement? Sri Lankan Tamil and Canadian Tamil are distinct. Please remain mature calling other people's comment rubbish makes you look like a child, especially when you have less then 100 edits. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 16:47, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Sri Lankan Tamils and Canadian Tamils are distinct because Sri Lankan Tamils are in Sri Lanka and Canadian Tamils are in Canada. I agree with you. You are great! If you count some one's maturity on Wikipedia by their edits, you are ignorant.Rajk2011 (talk) 17:04, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How so, in Canada what is the main language you use? English or French, which makes in unique from a Sri lankan Tamil who uses Sinhalese or Tamil. I am majoring in geography, written a paper on identity so I know for sure Tamil-Canadian is an ethnicity. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 16:54, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
At home even in Canada, Sri Lankan Tamils still speak Tamil, even in Sri Lanka especially in Colombo Sri Lankan Tamils speak English for official purposes, that doesn't mean anything. You are only majoring in geography, not in Anthropology to differentiate the distinction between "Community" and "Ethnicity".Rajk2011 (talk) 17:13, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My first year course in geography had major themes in ethnicity and identity. Sri Lankan Tamil are distinct from Canadian Tamils in many ways.Intoronto1125TalkContributions 17:16, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Your first year course in geography which had major themes in ethnicity and identity, is not sufficient to understand the distinction between "Community" and "Ethnicity".Rajk2011 (talk) 17:20, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You have no right in saying that. You were not there and cannot come to that conclusion. Which university did you attend? Intoronto1125TalkContributions 17:28, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Don't boast yourself too much, you did that and this. There is no need to me to identify myself here on Wikipedia or tell anything I want.Rajk2011 (talk) 17:38, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am not boasting, rather asking you a question. Also I do not understand what you mean by, "or tell anything I want". Intoronto1125TalkContributions 17:42, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Don't waste your time and mine here. You have requested third opinion and wait till there is someone here to participate on this discussion. Simply I don't want to identify me here on Wikipedia or don't want reveal my academic and other credentials. You should identify someone from his edits and not by the institution she/he has been admitted or the degrees she/he has obtained.Rajk2011 (talk) 17:50, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How am I wasting your time if you keep responding? I asked a simple question, imagine if you were a 14 year old that has not even finished high school, there is no logical conclusion we can come too. On the other lets say you are finished university then we there is grounds for a proper discussion. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 17:52, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have told you enough, I don't want to identify me here. And wait until another neutral editor comes to the scene. You should have the wisdom to guess a person's credentials by their edits, rather than asking like a child on their face directly, at the places like Wikipedia or other forums(because they can tell anything).Rajk2011 (talk) 18:07, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have stopped asking you couple of posts back, rather I was explaining why I chose to ask. I don't understand your last sentence, but asking to someone's face is better and more like an adult, rather then like a child who beats around the bush. Third opinion

[edit]

On ethnicity

I am not a long time wikipedia user.I am not well aware of its rules and features. If am eligible to give third opinion on the dispute over ethnicity then.I would say that it should appear as Tamil in the panel below her photo and it must be directed to Tamil people or Eelam Tamils [Sri Lankan Tamil].A new field called community can be created to refer as Tamil Canadian (Arun1paladin (talk) 04:20, 20 May 2011 (UTC))[reply]

Third Opinions

[edit]

Hi guys, I've been looking through the dispute and am rather puzzled. I think there is a confusion between Nationality and ethnicity. Sitsabaiesan was born in Sri Lanka (I assume her parents are Sri Lankan?) thus making her an ethnic Sri Lankan. Ethnicity is not solely defined location. Since Sri Lanka is no longer her homeland and she doesn't appear to have Sri Lankan citizenship, then it would be most appropriate to classify her as Sri Lankan Canadian or Tamil Canadian. Wikifan12345 (talk) 20:21, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I too agree, she could be categorized under Sri Lankan Canadian or Tamil Canadian if there is a column for "Community" in the Info box. But it is not appropriate under "Ethnicity" column.Rajk2011 (talk) 01:13, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I support her "Ethnicity" should be as Tamil people.Rajk2011 (talk) 01:40, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would say it is more appropriate to say that she is Tamil Canadian born in Jaffna (?), Sri Lanka. Kanatonian (talk) 14:31, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I support Kanatonian.Hillcountries (talk) 05:10, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That would be fine as long as her Ethnicity is directed to Tamil or Tamil......Rajk2011 (talk) 15:02, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

It looks to me you are having Ownership issues with the article. A THIRD OPINION WAS GIVEN so move on. Also, you are one revert away from violating the 3RR rule. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 02:45, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is no such opinion her Ethnicity is Tamil - Canadian. Your behavior seems to be similar to that of as a owner, since you have created her article. Please leave the Ethnicity blank because that matters a lot.Rajk2011 (talk) 03:48, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I just created the article, no indication of ownership. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 04:28, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnicity

[edit]

[6] Intoronto1125TalkContributions 19:03, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is mentioned she could be classified as Tamil Canadian, I too agree. But that is not her Ethnicity, that is her Community. Both are two different things.Rajk2011 (talk) 19:06, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
