History of Darius 1

Darius 1 was the son in law of Cambyses , the son of Cyrus . He was a Persian ruler who was known for his battles , victories and successions that was inscribed three languages in cuneiform script on the face of the rock in Behistun Inscription near the city of Kermanshah in western Iran .He added to his empire the regions of Punjab in India and Thrace in Europe. The Behistun Inscription begins with a brief autobiography and the ancestry and the lineage of Darius 1 and also includes the names of the 23 satrapies (provinces). Darius 1 set up an efficient government by dividing the empire into provinces or satrapies ; each ruled by a governor called Satrap. to keep a check on the empire , military officers were stationed in each satrapy to represent the "Great King , King of Kings" (Shahenshah) (emperor in Urdu language) . Special inspectors were appointed as the eyes and ears of the king ;they travelled through out the empire and reported to the king.

Darius 1 set up proper rules for his government and introduced the monetary system ; a new postal system was also set up which had relay stations called Chapar Khaneh throughout the empire. The policies of Cyrus were also under the administration and progress of Darius 1 which strengthened the empire .Darius 1 who died in 486 BCE , his empire started to conflict with the Greeks that continued for the next 150 years until the Persians were conquered by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE.
