Edit summaries are very important...

[edit]

Hi there. When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:
Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field. If you are adding a new section, please do not just keep the previous section's header in the Edit summary field – please fill in your new section's name instead. Thank you. ...And so is the Preview Button

[edit]

Hello again, Pwendel66:

I've noticed from your edits of Deepwater Horizon oil spill that you've been using a trial-and-error process in an effort to get things right. That kind of hands-on approach is without a doubt the only way to learn how to do things — and there's quite a lot to learn! However, rather than saving each of your attempts, it's much better to make liberal use of the "show preview" button, which allows you to see the results of your edit before you hit the "save page" button. That way, all of those edits that aren't quite right don't clog up the edit history (something you will come to appreciate once you've been around for a while).

And lastly: When you cut down on the number of saved edits, that also means that you have fewer edit summaries to fill out...

Hope this has been helpful, and... good luck editing! Cgingold (talk) 18:14, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PS - I see that you are hard at work on creating a new article on your User page. You don't need to worry about edit summaries for that, since it's in your own "user space". However, the standard practice for that sort of thing is to put it on a "sub-page" of your User page. In this case that would mean starting a new page called Pwendel66/Stuart H. Smith (and transferring the contents from your User page). Again, I hope this has been helpful. Regards, Cgingold (talk) 18:48, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deepwater Horizon oil spill

[edit]

Hi, Pwendel66. You have been an active editor on Deepwater Horizon oil spill and/or its related articles. During some last months there has been an active development of cleaning up that article by splitting off large sections into separate articles. A Deepwater Horizon series were created (all the articles accessible by Template:Deepwater Horizon oil spill series. You are invited to assist by cleaning-up and copy-editing these articles. There are also ongoing discussion concerning additional split-offs. You could see split-off templates at the article's page and find discussions at the talk page. Your input would be useful for building consensus on these issues. Thank you. Beagel (talk) 23:40, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
