I thought you might find it useful to have some information about references (refs) on wikipedia. These are important to validate your writing and inform the reader. Any editor can remove unreferenced material; and unsubstantiated articles may end up getting deleted, so when you add something to an article, it's highly advisable to also include a reference to say where it came from. Referencing may look daunting, but it's easy enough to do. Here's a guide to getting started.
A reference must be accurate, i.e. it must prove the statement in the text. To validate "Mike Brown climbed Everest", it's no good linking to a page about Everest, if Mike Brown isn't mentioned, nor to one on Mike Brown, if it doesn't say that he climbed Everest. You have to link to a source that proves his achievement is true. You must use reliable sources, such as published books, mainstream press, and authorised web sites. Blogs, Myspace, Youtube, fan sites and extreme minority texts are not usually acceptable, nor is original research (e.g. your own unpublished, or self-published, essay or research), or another wikipedia article.
The first thing you have to do is to create a "Notes and references" section (unless it already exists). This goes towards the bottom of the page, below the "See also" section and above the "External links" section. Enter this code:
The next step is to put a reference in the text. Here is the code to do that. It goes at the end of the relevant term, phrase, sentence, or paragraph to which the note refers, and after punctuation such as a full stop, without a space (to prevent separation through line wrap):
Whatever text you put in between these two tags will become visible in the "Notes and references" section as your reference.
Open the edit box for this page, copy the following text (inserting your own text where indicated), paste it at the bottom of the page and save the page:

You need to include the information to enable the reader to find your source. For an online newspaper source, it might look like this:

Note the single square brackets around the URL and the article title. The format is:
Make sure there is a space between the URL and the Title. This code results in the URL being hidden and the title showing as a link. Use double apostrophes for the article title (it is quoted text), and two single quote marks either side of the name of the paper (to generate italics). Double square brackets round the name of the paper create an internal link (a wikilink) to the relevant wikipedia article. Apostrophes must go outside the brackets. The date after The Guardian is the date of the newspaper, and the date after "Retrieved on" is the date you accessed the site – useful for searching the web archive in case the link goes dead. Dates are wikilinked so that they work with user preference settings to display the date in the format the user wishes.
You can use sources which are not online, but which you have found in a library or elsewhere—in which case leave out the information which is not relevant. The newspaper example above would be formatted like this:

Make sure you put two single quote marks round the title (to generate italics), rather than one double quote mark.

You may prefer to use a citation template to compile details of the source. The template goes between the ref tags and you fill out the fields you wish to. Basic templates can be found here: Wikipedia:Template messages/Sources of articles/Citation quick reference
The first time a reference appears in the article, you can give it a simple name in the <ref> code:
The second time you use the same reference in the article, you need only to create a short cut instead of typing it all out again:
You can then use the short cut as many times as you want. Don't forget the /, or it will blank the rest of the article! A short cut will only pick up from higher up the page, so make sure the first ref is the full one. Some symbols don't work in the ref name, but you'll find out if you use them. You can see multiple use of the same refs in action in the article William Bowyer (artist). There are 3 sources and they are each referenced 3 times. Each statement in the article has a footnote to show what its source is.
The above method is simple and combines references and notes into one section. A refinement is to put the full details of the references in their own section headed "References", while the notes which apply to them appear in a separate section headed "Notes". The notes can be inserted in the main article text in an abbreviated form as seen in Harriet Arbuthnot or in a full form as in Brown Dog affair.

Speedy deletion of Ashby Galleries

RE: About Tim Cantor page
[edit]Not sure who to reply to - you left the message as an anon user but I am guessing that you are the person who has been editing as User:ProfessorHarrison.
Anyway... to the task in hand. Firstly I have replaced the mainenance tags on the article - it is still riddled with problems and needs to be tagged as such - this is not a comment on with you or Tim Cantor, it is just an indication that the article does not (yet) comply with Wikipedia's guidelines and policies. Leaving aside potential conflict of interest issues the most urgent issue to be addressed is the whole style and tone of the article which is unencyclopaedic and still extremely promotional in tone; I would recommend firstly severely cutting back on the number of pictures in the article (as a comparison there are over twice as many pictures as in Rembrandt's or Picasso's!!). By all means have examples of Tim's work but these should be carefully chosen to have relevance to the text and to illustrate a point - at the moment it just looks like a promotional gallery website. With regard to the tone and style of the text itself I would start by getting rid of the personal opinions and claims e.g "Tim Cantor became obsessed with painting and showed a unique understanding." - says who?, what does it mean?, what is a "unique understanding"? - that sort of language is fine for his personal website or an exhibition catalogue but is really not suitable for an encyclopaedia.
The easiest way to approach this is probably to pare the whole thing down to the essential facts and then start building it up again using reliable sources - you will also need these to establish his notability as this is far from clear at the moment. I would be more than happy to help - 'saving' articles from deletion is something I have a good track record in, however this will require you to let go and approach the process dispassionately.
Finally I am concerned about the copyright status of the many images of Tim Cantor's work that you have uploaded. You claim to be the copyright holder so I can only presume that you are in fact Tim Cantor himself? Do you realise that by releasing them to the public domain you have given anyone anywhere the right to use those images as they wish - e.g. they could issue a print series, put them on coffee mugs, whatever and you would have no control over it and would have no rights to any revenue and no rights to any attribution. RE: Copyright
[edit]Harry. Just quickly on the copyright. I think that you need to use this license template {{Non-free 2D art}} which is a fair-use license for copyrighted artworks. I am pretty sure that you can't put fair-use images on Commons so any that are there will need to be deleted and uploaded back to Wikipedia. Note the wording of the licence - which can be seen here - Template:Non-free 2D art - as the permissions for use even on Wikipedia are very tight & you would not be able to justify the blanket inclusion of dozens of images on the TC page under fair-use. nancy (talk) 07:47, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. Progress & problems
[edit]Hi there Harry. The article is certainly improving but is still not at a standard where the tags can be removed. There are also further problems with the images. As I explained above, licensing them for fair use brings with it many restrictions including on how they can be used on Wikipedia and at the moment the use of them in the Tim Cantor article cannot be justified for the following reasons:
- it is rare that a fair use image can be used to illustrate the likeness of the subject of an article who is not dead. This is because there is a 'reasonable chance' of a non-fair use image being or becoming available - i.e. the subject is alive so there is a reasonable probability that someone would be able to take a snap shot of them.
- fair use images of works of art can only be used for critical commentary on the work in question or the artistic genre or technique of the work of art or the school to which the artist belongs.
The use of the images in Tim Cantor particularly the one that is the photograph of him is not covered by fair use and is therefore a copyright violation as are the others for the reasons stated above. It is for this reason that I have temporarily removed all the images from the article. Please don't replace them as the bottom line is that they are being used illegally. As you work for Tim I am sure that you or a colleague could lay their hands on a snapshot of him at a party or an opening or in his studio which would be copyright free and would be usable in the article. As for the images of the paintings I think that you might be able to argue the use of one of them, to illustrate his style, provided that there was explicit reference ("critical commentary") in the text - I shall leave it to you to decide which.
Notability is I think going to prove more difficult. As far as I can see there is only one decent reference and that refers to him winning a prize when he was 15 which doesn't exactly make him notable. The book used to source the rest of the article is problematic as it is published by Tim's company and is therefore classed as self-published and unreliable - it's hardly going to say that he is rubbish is it? What we really need is an article about him in the New York Times or something. I looked through google news archives but found nothing beyond a namecheck in a local rag & if I was to be brutally honest I would say that if this was nominated for deletion discussion at WP:AFD tomorrow I wouldn't give it more than a 10% chance of surviving - I suspect it would get pulled to bits as a vanity piece about an unexceptional artist who was reasonably good at self-promotion. That may have sounded harsh but it is no use pretending that we are not absolutely up against it with this one.
As I said, I am going to make some changes to the article, including removing the images. Don't take it personally.

You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
