World of Warcraft: Beyond the Dark Portal is a fantasy novel written by Aaron S. Rosenberg and Christie Golden published by Pocket Star Books, a division of Viacom. The novel is based on Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft universe, and is a novelization of the RTS PC game: Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal (1996). It was made available on June 24, 2008.

Plot

[edit]

World of Warcraft: Beyond the Dark Portal centers around the events following the orcish Horde's defeat. The orcish shaman Ner'zhul is alerted to the Horde's defeat on Azeroth and shortly afterwards the portal closes (following the ending of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness). He is then informed by Teron Gorefiendthat it is possible to reopen the portal by using the skull of Gul'dan (the orc warlock responsible for the first opening of the portal) and once the portal is open he can obtain certain artifacts from Azeroth and create his own portals, allowing limitless worlds for the Horde to conquer as well as an escape from the dying world of Draenor.

Meanwhile on the opposite side of the portal the Alliance forces are beginning to seperate as arguments arise and feuds return now that the threat of the Horde is gone. The human mage Khadgar realizes though that the threat is in fact not gone as the rift still remains meaning that the portal can still be opened. Shortly after such a thing happens and the orcs begin to pour through the portal once more. After numerous mysterious thefts occur by orcs throughout Azeroth Khadgar realizes the orcs plan to open new portals on their planet. It is decided by the Alliance that this can not be allowed to happen and troops under the command of Khadgar, Turalyon,Alleria Windrunner, Danath, and Kurdran are sent through the portal to stop the orcs.

After successfully capturing all the needed artifacts Ner'zhul manages to open numerous portals across Draenor and escapes through one of them. Unfortunately the vast energy the portals require begins to tear the planet apart. Khadgar realizes that the damage will cross through the portal into Azeroth, endangering their (the alliance) home. It is evident to all the commanders that the only action is to close the portal and saving their home, but trapping them on Draenor, possibly forever. The novel ends with the portal closing and the Alliance forces rebuilding, knowing that they will probably never see Azeroth again.

Association

[edit]

Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is the sequel to the popular real-time strategy game Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, developed by Blizzard Entertainment and released in December 1995. Users play as either orc, troll and ogre Horde or human, dwarf, gnome and elf Grand Alliance in a fantasy semi-medieval world called Azeroth.
