Your script: hide-vector-sidebar.js stopped working ;-(
Two or three days ago your script User:PleaseStand/Hide_Vector_sidebar
importScript("User:PleaseStand/hide-vector-sidebar.js");
(in my vector.js) just stopped working. As far as I know, without me doing anything. Is it just happening to me? or is it a "global" problem?
--Seren-dipper (talk) 01:27, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
- Recently, the developers changed the IDs of certain interface elements; shortly after I discovered this change, I fixed the script. WP:BYPASS to update to the latest version. If it still does not work, it would be helpful if you could provide the name and version of the web browser you are using. PleaseStand (talk) 01:39, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Archiving
Just wanted to let you know - I decided to manually archive. It seems a lot easier. Thanks for your help though! ~ QwerpQwertus ·_Contact Me_·_Talkback_· 03:21, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
- As an afterword - I didn't know you made userinfo - it's really helpful. Great job! ~ QwerpQwertus ·_Contact Me_·_Talkback_· 03:23, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
- As an post-after word - just a suggestion for userinfo, saying for autoconfirmed users "An autoconfirmed(or confirmed) user"... rather than "A registered user " might be good.
Admin coaching
Still interested? If so, what sort of thing are you expecting - any areas in particular you want help with, or do you want me to run through something like this? Peter 14:46, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
- AfD is one of my main concerns. I have also made only one page protection request (for an obvious reason) although I have considered reporting the occasional find of heavy vandalism to that page. You may also want to examine my three reports to UAA that were rejected. Four Phase seems to cover the main areas of admin work, but I do need to focus on learning AfD (the "standard" Four Phase plan does not seem to cover that adequately). Please be aware that this week, I can only log on to Wikipedia approximately one hour per day, so you might not get a swift reply (you will get a reply though). Thanks, PleaseStand (talk) 04:08, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, those look like good places to start. I suggest creating a user subpage where we can put questions to each other and keep it all together over a longer period of time than normal talk pages allow. My internet (well more likely wireless network) connection is playing up at the moment, so I'm battling through today and won't be doing much more for now. But until later, welcome onboard, I hope I can help out in at least some of those areas :) Peter 19:40, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- Did that (User:PleaseStand/Admin coaching). Back now; it was great to have a break from Wikipedia. PleaseStand (talk) 21:22, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay in getting started, the last few days have been busier than expected. Life can be a bit unpredictable at the moment, so expect periods when I'll respond very quickly, and other times I'll not be very active on WP. There's now something on your coaching page. Veterans' Memorial Hall, round 2, part 2!
I would be so grateful if you would move the article as you offered. (Am I autoconfirmed? How do I figure this out? I so want to learn all of the steps involved in this process--but I had guests from out of town and have only just found the time to catch my breath and get back to this. Thank you, PleaseStand. Your help has been invaluable.MtRainier7 (talk) 06:07, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
P.S. Did I understand correctly that, once an article has been accepted, then one can proffer images to add to it?MtRainier7 (talk) 06:10, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, you have been an autoconfirmed user (more than 4 days and 10 edits). Before you move the article, I would advise that you look at our formatting cheatsheet and divide the article into sections. Currently, the article follows the structure of the web site earlier versions were copied from, which is not good. As for pictures: you can provide any picture you took yourself or otherwise hold the copyright to or the name of a picture that has already been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (our repository of free pictures and videos). All pictures from Flickr that legitimately state "No rights reserved" and many (but not all) that say "Some rights reserved" are available for Wikipedia's use, as well as those taken by Federal government employees as part of their job. We cannot use most other pictures (for copyright reasons), except under very strict conditions, which may or may not apply to the particular use. PleaseStand (talk) 06:36, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
I will upload the non-copyrighted photos to Wikimedia Commons. Also, I did divide the article into sections and go to the cheatsheet for coding ideas. I do not know if the article as it appears sufficiently answers the question of the flow of the article vis-a-vis the website; I did make a little change, but left it essentially in chronological order. Is this still a worry to you? If so, I will figure out something. Do let me know. Thank you.MtRainier7 (talk) 23:04, 24 June 2010 (UTC) (That is, if you have time, do let me know! The article is still at User:MtRainier7/Veterans' Memorial Hall).MtRainier7 (talk) 23:06, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- If it is simply in chronological order, that is not a concern to me. I believe the article is good enough to move into the article (main) namespace, where it subsequently can be improved. PleaseStand (talk) 06:06, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
THANK YOU! I did move the article, and I've done my research re licensing, Wikimedia Commons, etc. You are so kind! I can't imagine how, but if ever I can be of service to you, please let me know. Thank you again. (If I ever enter another article, may I run it by you??)MtRainier7 (talk) 23:43, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

American versus British spelling
I did not realise (sic) the article in question (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/English_language) was intentionally written (for the most part) according to the British-English spelling. I was actually working on a more extensive revision but I will save that for an American-English Wiki. There remain glaring inconsistencies with the usage of "iz" and "is" in the article which I was in the process of attempting to correct (no longer, of course) these should still be addressed though. Thank you for your help!
Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it. It worked!
How would I add a background to a template? I want to add a background to the template using the same background that works on other pages:
.page-Template:Jacob #bodyContent, { background: #FFFFFF url('http://blahblahblah.jpg') top center no-repeat; }
So how do I program the colon? .page-Template_Jacob does not work :/
One sec on barnstar! Adamtheclown (talk) 00:25, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
.page-Template_Jacob #bodyContent { background: #FFFFFF url('http://blahblahblah.jpg') top center no-repeat; }
You had a stray comma after #bodyContent. PleaseStand (talk) 00:37, 28 June 2010 (UTC)- Wow, is it really that easy? They saw pros make things look ez....you are definitely a pro, thanks! I guess I can't use CSS for template backgrounds, I will use position absolute instead such as:
- <div style="position: absolute; left: 100px; top: 100px; height: 50px; padding: 1em;">[[File:NAME.png]]</div>
- Adamtheclown (talk) 00:59, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
- As User:Alex Smotrov subsequently said on the village pump, it is easy if you both know to look in the HTML source code (View Source) and know CSS. As for the "template background" part, it is true (because of security restrictions) that you have to use absolute positioning for {{top icon}}s. PleaseStand (talk) 16:11, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link, helpful as always. Absolute positioning is a real bitch, so I gave up trying to tweak this right now. Adamtheclown (talk) 17:32, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

User Info
For User:PleaseStand/userinfo.js, for the following line:
var fh = window.document.getElementById("firstHeading");
Please also find the ID "section-0" as well when "firstHeading" can't be found, because some scripts that modify the first section, including the one that lets you edit the first section of the page, replaces the ID. Thanks. Gary King (talk) 00:11, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- Done. I have also changed the font size to be consistent with the "From Wikipedia..." tagline on the Vector skin, but that can be overridden by CSS if you use the !important keyword. PleaseStand (talk) 00:53, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- Nice job with the script so far; it's certainly replaced Sysop Detector for me. The first thing that strikes me when using this script, though, is that the gender symbols aren't very pleasing to look at. They should at least be preceded with a space to separate them from the username, and also be smaller. Please wrap them in
<div>
with a different ID for male and female so that we can replace it with an image if we want. And please add a thousand separator to the number of edits. The line added with the script should be on the same line as "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia", not pushing that line down, which adds more unnecessary vertical length. Gary King (talk) 01:10, 11 June 2010 (UTC)- All changes listed above should be done now; please offer any feedback. PleaseStand (talk) 02:30, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

- I have changed the default gender symbol font to 75% Lucida Grande/
Lucida ConsoleLucida Sans Unicode — is it better or worse than the previous Arial? PleaseStand (talk) 02:24, 13 June 2010 (UTC)- A lot better. Gary King (talk) 04:13, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
- I have changed the default gender symbol font to 75% Lucida Grande/
How about wrapping "section-0" in classes based on a user's levels? So, <h1 id="section-0" class="firstHeading userinfo-edit-filter-manager userinfo-administrator">, etc. This would allow us to color it as we want. Gary King (talk) 05:50, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- That should not be difficult to do. I'll do it when I get the time. PleaseStand (talk) 11:55, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- How about also including the "last edited" date for the user? So that it says "A reviewer and rollbacker, 8 months old, with 5,250 edits. Last edited 30 minutes ago. — From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". It can be used to quickly assess someone's activity, and it can be useful in several situations. Gary King (talk) 01:15, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
I had another thought re the User Info Script - what do you think of "registered editor" as opposed to "registered user"? kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 23:58, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- I prefer "user". It's exactly what the server returns, I believe. Gary King (talk) 02:17, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
- Editor is a three-syllable word and suggests formal editorial control to some; user is only a two-syllable word and is used by the MediaWiki software that runs Wikipedia. PleaseStand (talk) 02:22, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
Keeping this here for now. PleaseStand (talk) 06:01, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
- Finally made the changes. #firstHeading now belongs to classes "ps-group-sysop" for admins, "ps-group-abusefilter" for edit filter managers, etc. There is currently no "ps-group-user" to distinguish registered users from those without accounts. Is the last edited part good enough? (Hint: it rounds down just as the user age part does.) PleaseStand (talk) 23:36, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
- Very nice. Here's the CSS that I'm using for now. It uses the same colors as User:Pyrospirit/metadata, since I'm already familiar with those. Also, not a big problem, but if you're not aware of this function yet, the CSS for the gender symbol can be added using "appendCSS('.ps-gender { padding-left: 0.25em; }');", which seems cleaner to me. And then just put the gender in class="ps-gender". A few minor tweaks: In "Last edited 4 minutes ago", perhaps link "4 minutes ago" to the user's contributions page (/Special:Contributions/Gary_King/), and in "A reviewer and rollbacker", link the "reviewer and rollbacker" to /Special:Log?type=rights&page=User:Gary King. For "8 months old", it could link to "/Special:Log?type=newusers&user=Gary+King". Also, why do you choose to not have the script work in subpages? And finally, since we're using periods in the line, there should be one at the end of "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia", even though it's just a sentence fragment. Also, I've been thinking of building something like User Info for articles for a long time now, that shows the article's age, maybe total unique editors, frequency of edits, etc. If you got time, maybe you could try it out; otherwise, I'm slowly working on a version that might be done in a few months. Gary King (talk) 00:12, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
- Blocked users should also have a class, so that their usernames can be colored red, for instance. Gary King (talk) 18:37, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
- I have now made some of the changes, including the addition of CSS classes and a link to the user's contributions page. I do not have the script activate on subpages because neither of the scripts I based it on did. PleaseStand (talk) 01:58, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Page design
Hi for a long time I've been a fan of old english style parchment paper. I especially like looking at old books and the aged paper like. I was wondering how hard it would be to design a parchment style scheme for wikipedia which can be optional in your preferences. It would create the atmosphere of an old enccylopedia or scroll, kind of like this or this. Instead of white pages it would be a faded yellow colour with a more traditional font and burned edges around the frame of the pages for effect. Now I know this may not be to everybody's taste but I'm sure a lot of people would find it a nice option, certainly a lot more attractive than green writing on black. Would it be possible to come up with something? Its certainly possible.. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:23, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
- That would require a relatively large amount of CSS and also making images for the exact purpose. It isn't something I am particularly interested in; the default Vector skin is OK for me. PleaseStand (talk) 22:25, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Errors in userinfo.js
The script throws errors when the API is down. It shouldn't. Find the following:
var query = eval("(" + x.responseText + ")").query;
It should be something like the following instead:
var query = eval("(" + x.responseText + ")");
if (!query.query) return false;
else query = query.query;
Gary King (talk · scripts) 17:55, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- Also, might as well add "if (api.status == 200)" as well. Gary King (talk · scripts) 18:13, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- I made both changes. PleaseStand (talk) 22:30, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Hide navigation boxes
Hi I've made a request here. I don't have a problem with navigation templates but some people ar eintent on removing any form of template from articles which I think is unfair for those who find them very useufl for browsing. Is it possible you could come up with a "hide navigation templates" in "gadgets" in user preference so those who hate them can hide them withouth it affecting others? A thank you! + Request for new feature in your script "short-title.js"
Earlier discussion
|
---|
Request: It would be really helpful to have the "short-title.js" also include the "last modified date" (The one that appears at the bottom of all Wikipedia pages). I would greatly prefer to have the date appear in the ISO 8601-format: YYYY-MM-DD.Like this (Remember that I know nothing about javascript so the date part will be phony and I do not want the angle brackets to appear in the output): window.document.title = shortcut + " - " + <YYYY-MM-DD> + " " + "Wikipedia," + wgContentLanguage.toUpperCase(); Sometimes it would be useful to be able to toggle on/off inclusion of the date (and the space behind it).
Could you please help me (again:-) by writing the code?

- Hello again! :-) (Sorry for the delay!)
I have now looked into and tried out User:PleaseStand/sidebarToggle.js, and here is what I think:
1.I like having the "Toggle Sidebar" button in the top left corner on the screen!
2.I dislike the animation of the sidebar, when it is toggled. (That is because I use a very very slow laptop which often even freezes for a whole minute or two at a time. Therefore: anything that takes up resources without being strictly necessary is unwanted.
3.Is it not a waste of my laptop's resources, and slow internet connection, to make a call to http://bits.wikimedia.org/skins-1.5/vector/images/tab-break.png like User:PleaseStand/sidebarToggle.js seems to do? If so, then I do not want that...
Well, for now I think I stick to your script: hide-vector-sidebar.js
--Seren-dipper (talk) 02:34, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hello again! :-) (Sorry for the delay!)
I have already switched the border to a solid color because the difference is not that much, and might create a version that does not use cookies or animation. It shouldn't be too hard. PleaseStand (talk) 02:18, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
A weakness in the vector skin
The tabs near the top of wikipedia pages get distorted on my screen.
This has nothing directly to do with your hide-sidebar-scripts, but it is a slightly related topic. Therefore I ask you: To whom do you think i should address this problem?
(If you would take a quick look at the problem yourself then I have provided four screenshots of my laptop, and a short description, in the following RTF file:
Because of the screenshots the file size is 18MB).
