Sigma Alpha Mu

It was definitely no problem. I'm still confused about this incident. I have never seen anyone deny references before. It is even a wikipedia policy to keep a reference up if the link no longer goes anywhere (most likely because people can cache it). I can understand where Alan.ca was coming from, but I see no reason to ever delete a reference unless the reference doesn't have anything to do with what it is referencing. I saw you joined the wikiproject for greek life, which you should definitely keep up with. Greek life articles on wikipedia have been growing in quantity and quality a whole lot recently. Sigma Delta Tau

Using university 'famous greek' websites is like using chapter websites or greek101, it's basically user generated (or local chapter generated) information that isn't checked for reliability and cannot generally be sourced by other more reliable and verifiable content. While a university website would possibly be considered a reputable source about academics, anything related that field, their own university in some cases, like this, it is not a reliable source. Fact checking for university notable alumni pages is basically nil.. and if you read over WP:RS closely you'll see an addendum stating "Sources should be appropriate to the claims made." Since a university's website is more geared towards the university it's not an appropriate source for famous greeks. An example from that website is Courtney Cox-Arquette on there she is a Delta Zeta however she, and many others, are not members. Another very good example of this is the University of North Florida's notable greek page. Jennifer Blackburn Dunn is listed as a Tri-Sigma; she is however a Gamma Phi Beta. Hope this helps and explains why I removed her and the reference; if you can find a more reputable one please do add her back in, but as of so far I've been unsuccessful in locating one. --ImmortalGoddezz 06:36, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

By local chapter generated I meant the local chapters at the university; not just a Sigma Delta Tau chapter. Sorry, I probably could have clarified it in my above response. However Greek Offices exist to promote greek life and one of the things most commonly used is 'this famous person was in greek life, you should be too!' or something similar to that. While the university might have a reputation for fact checking this is not an academic publication, this is promotional material from the greek life/student affairs department, a department that does not necessarily have a reputation for fact checking that the university does. In addition the website doesn't state where they got their original information, so you don't know where it comes from. If you still disagree I think the next best step would prob. be the F/S wikiproject to get opinions on the source itself. --ImmortalGoddezz 22:51, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Pittsburgh event for Wikipedia's tenth anniversary

Hi! Since you're listed as a Wikipedian in Pittsburgh, I wanted to invite you to the Wikipedia Tenth Anniversary celebrations we're having in Pittsburgh on Saturday, January 15. During the daytime, we're going to be having a photo contribution drive where anyone can bring in their digital photos or prints and Wikipedians will teach people how to upload them and add them to articles, and maybe introduction to Wikipedia workshops as well. Then in the evening, we'll have fun at the Carson City Saloon. There will be free Wikipedia t-shirts and other goodies, as well. See the Pittsburgh meetup page for more details. Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop at CMU (Aug 15)

Since you are a member of the Wikipedia:WikiProject University of Pittsburgh, I'd like to invite you to the Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop that will take place at CMU on Aug 15 (this workshop is open to general public, and is a joint imitative of CMU and Pitt). There will be another workshop held at Pitt in the Fall as well. It will cover how to include Wikipedia in one's course (WP:SUP) and also how to become a Wikipedia:Campus Ambassadors. Pennsylvania has currently only one ambassador (myself) and it would be great if we could recruit at least several more. Ambassadors help course instructors, showing them how Wikipedia works, and interact with students.
