Hi, I see you're interested in creating an updater for American soccer? I'm happy to help, but a couple of questions first:

  • Can you list the leagues that you want to include (this will determine whether a sub-template is requried)
  • How many of these have season articles (e.g. 2016 Major League Soccer season).

Best way to handle "Playoffs" on NISA team season pages

Hey there, I've been updating the team season pages getting ready for the playoffs and I'm conflicted about the statistics section. I'm not sure of the best way to separate the playoff statistics from the regular season statistics, especially considering there are going to be two playoffs for Fall and Spring, AND a overall championship game. There are two ways of doing it.

Option A: Having separate columns for Fall and Spring playoff stats, and when the time comes the NISA Championship game gets added on as a third column for the two teams that qualify. This is what is on six of the seven NISA team pages, including Detroit City FC's page.

Option B: Having a singular column for the NISA Playoffs that interludes the Fall, Spring, and NISA Championship This is what the Cosmos pages has right now.

Counting league playoff as league games on the DCFC season page

Hey, can you explain the rational behind this? I don't understand why those games, which were in a playoff tournament, should count "in-league." I'd rather ask you head on instead of just reverting you. ColeTrain4EVER (talk) 16:39, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ColeTrain4EVER: To me it was because it was a league tournament - it was part of the normal fall league play and involved all the league teams with no aditions. Plus, it was longer than the actual "season". Non-league competitive play was/would've been: the Independent Cup and the US Open Cup. Is there precedent one way or the other? @Pirmas697: I understand that rational but typically Wikipedia has worked on the precedent that playoffs =/= league. Even though the NISA Fall playoffs were longer than the regular season, that's only because of COVID and it's seen as a separate competition than the regular season. That's why the stat boxes I put at the bottom of each season page have each regular season, the fall playoff, and the U.S. Open Cup as their own columns. There has been a consensus on this and I'll show you a few examples (2019 Louisville City FC season, 2017 New York Red Bulls season, and even English seasons like 2019–20 Brentford F.C. season where leading scorer Ollie Watkins has 25 league goals but his one goal during the promotion play-offs is counted separately). I'm also hesitant to include the Independent Cup in goal totals because NISA even considers it a "pre-season tournament" and things like that aren't usually counted, although this feels like an in-between situation. @ColeTrain4EVER: As far as I am aware, the Independent Cup is intended to be an annual thing and is a league-controlled/mandated series of games (rather than a series of friendlies set up by one team) and is serious enough that one game delayed by COVID is still pending, when if it wasn't a more official competition, I think it would've been abandoned almost immediately. @Pirmas697: It is suppose to be a yearly competition (the new affiliate leagues can earn spots in it). I don't believe it's "league controlled/mandated" though since A) each region was self-responsible for scheduling / setting tie-breakers and B) teams like the Michigan Stars and entire Western Conference did not take part. Also, NISA Commissioner John Prutch said in an interview that "The Independent Cup will be a tremendous pre-season type of event as our full focus is on beginning the NISA 2020-21 season in August.” Source Also, not every team (nor the league) kept stats on things like substitutes so tracking those caps is near impossible.
