Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Madeleine Peyroux - Careless Love.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Madeleine Peyroux - Careless Love.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 14:54, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Is this a Wikipedia rule? If so, can you please provide a cite? Thanks. Jkp1187 (talk) 18:12, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
I understand your position, and definitely want to work with you on this. However, your suggested guideline is creates bad results. For instance, it would lead to exclusion of two third party candidates who received a substantial percentage of the vote (Perot in '92 and '96, Anderson in '80) despite having an impact on the race. Indeed, Perot in '92 and Anderson in '80 participated in televised debates against major candidates during the Fall election campaign (Anderson against Reagan, Perot against Bush and Clinton). At the same time, it means that candidates who received electoral votes, such as Hospers in '72 and Byrd in '60 despite receiving minimal votes (Hospers) or, really, none at all (Byrd) SHOULD be included.
I suggest instead that Third party/independent candidates should not be included in the infobox unless either (a) they receive a substantial percentage of votes, or otherwise significantly affected the race, or (b) received any electoral votes. I suggest that Nader in '00 had an impact in the race (certainly many believe, rightly or wrongly, that his presence 'threw' the election to Bush. Don't want to debate that issue, but the idea is out there and I think that his candidacy should be recognized.) I also suggest that Perot ('96 and '92) and Anderson ('80) either had an impact on the race, or received a significant portion of the popular vote (in all cases, more than 5%) to merit inclusion.
Of course, there are other candidates that could be discussed, but in essence I think that by not including any candidates that had an impact on the race (and the only case where there were more than 4 I think would be 1860,) a disservice is done to history. Jkp1187 (talk) 22:12, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
I don't think this is eligible for speedy deletion, as the page history should be kept to prove that the comment was added by the user in question, rather than me adding random comments by other users to the project page. I have removed the notice rather than adding a {{hangon}} template, because the latter creates Wikipedia talk talk:Articles for deletion/British Airways Flight BA38, and that's just silly. -- Roleplayer (talk) 16:01, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:British Airways Flight BA38.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:British Airways Flight BA38.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 10:30, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
Where's The Code?
[edit]Phil, when I click onto the link in your last post at Template talk:Infobox Officeholder it does not give me any code. Maybe you can fix the link or post the code on my talk page. --SMP0328. (talk) 22:32, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Because it's a copyrighted image, you need to fill out this little form here (see below) and put it on the image page or the WikiGods will throw a hissy fit. I'm telling you this because the jerk who tagged the image didn't let you know about it. I just happened to stumble across it. If you don't put the form up by Wednesday, they'll delete the image. I'll bring it up on the image help desk and tell them you weren't notified until five days after the image was tagged.

Fair use rationale for Image:Helen_of_troy.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Helen_of_troy.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 22:16, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Thank you. AfD nomination of List of British Prime Ministers by nicknames
[edit]An editor has nominated List of British Prime Ministers by nicknames, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of British Prime Ministers by nicknames and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 03:00, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Defaultsort vs. BD
[edit]Hi, Philip.
The Template:BD is rather controversial, see its talkpage. Deletion is suggested. Using the defaultsort template is preferred, as it acts on all catagories, including those that come via templates (like bio-stubs). That's why a parameter is not needed for the template recentdeath.

Replaceable fair use Image:Michael Foot.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Michael Foot.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 21:58, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

UK Deputy PM
[edit]You seem to be one of the most knowledgeable people on the UK's government, so I think I'll go to you! Nobody has responded on Brown's page on who his deputy is. I've narrowed it to Harriet Harman because of the deputy position in Commons, Alister Darling because (from my point of view) he seems to be the next most powerful minister and Jack Straw because of his new, prestigious positions and how most of us thought he was actually given the Deputy PM and First Secretary of State position. Therequiembellishere (talk) 18:14, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- There is currently no Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom - there's no constitutional requirement for one. Harriet Harman is the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and would become Acting Leader if anything were to happen to Gordon Brown. Technically it would be up to the Queen as to who would become PM, but she'd probably call for Harman. Hope this answers your question. --Philip Stevens (talk) 19:55, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- Do you think it'd be alright if I put her up in the deputy section of his infobox? Therequiembellishere (talk) 20:33, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry to interrupt, but we could not put anyone in the deputy section — as Mr Stevens noted, there are reasons for Harman to be named as such, but equally, as you said, Darling is the Second Lord and Chancellor is without exception the second most powerful minister (even above the DPM when there is one)... It's just too nuanced to be expressed as "deputy is X" DBD 20:48, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- Well what if I put her in as deputy ad interim? That is effectively what she is. And if a DPM is ever chosen, would it be appropriate to place them there at all then? Tehy don't really have power and they don't necessarily take control either, right? Therequiembellishere (talk) 23:58, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- Do you think it'd be alright if I put her up in the deputy section of his infobox? Therequiembellishere (talk) 20:33, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit]The merged infobox looks good. Is there a way the template can be modified so that the 'nickname=' field of the original Military infobox is displayed? Thanks, Hal Jespersen (talk) 16:46, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- Done. --Philip Stevens (talk) 16:55, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. That solution was completely nonintuitive to me. Wouldn't it be better to modify the merged template to pick up all the relevant data from the templates you're merging from? Hal Jespersen (talk) 18:51, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, but I didn't see that field. --Philip Stevens (talk) 19:58, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, I'm not sure what you're saying. As I understood it, someone (you?) a few months ago took the contents of Template:Infobox Military Person and copied the unique parts of it into Template:Infobox Officeholder. That person neglected to include the nickname= field, which is actually rather widely used in military biographies. I don't understand these templates well enough (not do I have admin permissions) to modify the template. I have been assuming you were involved in this merger, based on some comments you made in the Officeholder template talk page. Hal Jespersen (talk) 20:14, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- If you'd like the nickname field added to {{Infobox Officeholder}}, add a comment to the talk page. --Philip Stevens (talk) 21:04, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Unsourced statement about the Palace of Westminster
[edit]Greetings, Mr Stevens. On 4 March, you contributed to the Palace of Westminster article with a large section about customs and traditions (diff). I should like to ask you about one element in particular: do you have access to any source supporting that Spencer Perceval was officially pronounced dead at 10 Downing Street? A Problem?
[edit]Hi Philip. I don't know why the seats carried (number) of third/forth party is in bold while the others are not except the first (leading) party which usually indicates the party that gets plurality or forms the government (e.g. Canadian elections, Bloc Québécois - third party - did not join in the government after that, but its seats carried is in bold -- Conservatives formed a minority government instead) . Election templates
[edit]Hi Philip. I've reverted your changes to the templates {{British elections (1707-1800)}} and {{British elections}}, largely on the basis that they do not cover the same entity - it was not just a name or area change - the UK is a merger of two separate kingdoms (Ireland and GB), so I don't believe elections just for GB should be in the UK template.
Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:04, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Henman Hill
[edit]Thanks :) Have done - JVG (talk) 15:51, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Lists cannot be Good Articles, so this nomination will fail unless you withdraw it. If you want List of British Prime Ministers by nicknames to be a higher class, you'll have to take it to Featured List candidates. Nikki311 22:33, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
An interesting list, but the GA process doesn't deal with lists. I suggest that you nominate at featured lists; there's no "good lists" process. I'm going to remove this article's GA nomination, and wish you luck with it at FLC. --Malleus Fatuorum (talk) 22:35, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

TfD nomination of Template:Pope

Proposed deletion of Marina Wheeler
[edit]A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Marina Wheeler, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice
[edit]Hi,
As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.
We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.
You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.
We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Disputed non-free use rationale for Image:Children of Dune 1.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading Image:Children of Dune 1.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:06, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:Inara Serra1.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Inara Serra1.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Fair use rationale for Image:Hugh Gaitskell.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Hugh Gaitskell.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
Thank you. Richard Pinch (talk) 14:53, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Time for resolution
[edit]Hiya. For several months now, the article naming for 18th Century British royals has been ever-which-where — all over the shop. In an attempt to solve this, I have prepared a page for discussion: here. Please, please, please come and discuss, even contribute to the Poll. Cheers! DBD 15:34, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Ambassador/Minister
[edit]Thanks for the excellent solution to the minister/ambassador problem on George W. P. Hunt. I have never used that governor template before, so I did not know about its possibilities. •Life of Riley (talk) 19:46, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
