Copyright page

Hi welcome to wiki, Just reversed you addition to the Novels templateTemp page as Copyright_date is not a field in the "infobox book". That is not to say that it should not be but you would need to propose this on the Template talk:Infobox Book page. License tagging for Image:War machine cover.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:War machine cover.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

The Novels WikiProject Newsletter Issue II - July 2006
Project news The project's automatically generated worklist Novels without Infobox has been worked through giving infoboxes to most of the {{mystery-novel-stub}}s. This is about to get a regeneration probably with new genres. In addition to the raft of articles on the Simon Templar as The Saint novels added last month, then the Modesty Blaise series and now starting on Matt Helm series. All the inital work of one editor! One editor has been putting in sterling work coverting novel articles from "yyyy books" categorization over to "yyyy novels". Again notice that the {{Infobox Book}} now has a new field for "illustrator" for indicating the name of someone who has illustrated the majority of the novel (or book). Member News The project has currently 104 members, 16 joined since the last newsletter in mid June 2006.	From the Members Welcome to the second issue of the Novels WikiProject's newsletter! Auto list news Currently we have two lists that are up and running. Undergoing testing, the third list will contain articles that have incomplete infoboxes. Current debates New book related notability proposals have been started and are to be seen at Wikipedia:Notability (books), please take a look at these and comment. These are NOT active yet, although at first sight they seem a good basis. Categorization of novels debate is currently ongoing. Further input would be very welcome.
Current proposals You may have seen proparations going on behind the scenes with a view to establishing a format "Assessment Department". The aim of this will be to aid our efforts in improving novel articles particularly in tune with WP:1.0 and WP:WVWP methdology. There has been a small amount of interest in a Collaboration of the Week/Fortnight/Month, but to be viable we would need support.

Project news In the northern hemisphere this is traditionally the season for holiday's - if you are due for one - enjoy the rest. Quiet work is going on trying to improve the coverage of Infoboxes in Novel articles and adding vital information to those Infoboxes. Those that make the most contribution do get noticed! We now have a Collaboration of the Month (see below). Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction) should be looked at. It was adopted recently, but discussion is still going. Collaboration of the Month Announcing our new Collaboration of the Month which for the month of August is The Mystery of the Yellow Room. If this is successful we can really improve these articles and we may increase the frequency of the title change.
Current debates New book related notability proposals are to be seen at Wikipedia:Notability (books), if you have not seen these do take a look. The debate and level of change has slowed so thi may mean that a concensus is near! Discussion about adding two new fields, Film adaptation and Based on film, to the {{Infobox_Book}} template is going on in the WP:BOOKS talk page.

Acts of War proposed for deletion

Hi PeregrineV! Please take a look at Acts of War. It has 16 fields that are filled only with dummy information, such as "~Explain the novel's title.." It probably shouldn't remain that way. It confuses the ISBN-searching because it has a dummy ISBN. I marked it with {{wp:prod}} but that should be removed if you think you can get to it. The Ashes of Eden has some of the same problems. Auto list news Those working on auto generated lists have been a bit quiet recently. However there have been some work done on the /NovelsInCompleteInfobox list, focusing on adding those missing "genre" entries - however after being rerun today after a 2 month gap the number of articles selected has gone up from 1049 to 1172. We need help to ensure the informatin gets added to the infoboxes.
Collaboration of the Month The Collaboration of the Month is going well. This month's Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Of these 7 have been moved to a short "Inactive" list due to not contributing to Wikipedia for at least six months. They are free to reactivate themselves at any time, of course! Auto list news The NovelsInCompleteInfobox has been regenerated at the start of October and was shown to have grown rather than shrunk! So this month I have concentrated my efforts (with some help from Grey Shadow (talk · contribs)) on the novels missing "genre" tags. These "genre-less" have now "all" been dealt with. Hopefully we can break the back of this load of work, but it will need help. It would be nice to get these worklists to a state where they can monitor the newly created articles rather than cleaning the retrospective material.
Collaboration of the Month The Collaboration of the Month is going well. October's collaboration was slightly compromised by the removal of our notice early on; however there were still nearly 80 edits to improve the article. This months Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is Doctor Zhivago (novel)
Current debates We have a project structure that allows for the formation of special interest task forces (al la "WP:MILHIST".) This is useful for identifying groups of Novels editors who have a common interest. (i.e. Science fiction novels, Crime Novels, Children's novels, Classic literature, Russian novels etc.) Would there be interest out there in setting one or more of these up. Comments please to the General Forum.
Newsletter challenge Last months Liponym challenge was met by Springeragh (talk · contribs), but the article is still a "very" small stub. The first person to start the article is mentioned in the next newsletter. This months' article is Lawrence Durrell's novel Clea.

Project news The project Scope has been slightly expanded to include the shorter narrative prose fiction of Novelettes and Short stories. Due to the diligance of many editors we now have more than 5000 articles tagged as part of the project. Keeping the Novels announcements page up to date and fresh is in need of a volunteer who can keep an eye on it and keep it's content fresh and lively. Please let us know if you are able to help with this. It doesn't involve much, but it needs to be looked at regularly. Member news The project has currently 178 members, 9 joined & 1 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of November 2006. Current debates A new policy proposal has been started and the various points are to be seen at Wikipedia:Speedy deletion criterion for unsourced articles, please take a look at these and comment. This is a vital subject and all editors should consider the implications. These are NOT active yet, but could have wide reaching consequences. Please contribute your views. We have a project structure that allows for the formation of special interest task forces (al la "WP:MILHIST".) This was mentioned last month and a few have indicated interest. This is useful for identifying groups of Novels editors who have a common interest. (i.e. Science fiction novels, Crime Novels, Children's novels, Classic literature, Russian novels etc.) Would there be interest out there in setting one or more of these up. Comments please to the General Forum. Currently I am considering starting with "Crime Novels" and "Russian Novels" to see what can be achieved.

During this year we have seen huge a growth in the number of editors contributing to the project and a massive increase in the number of articles linked to the project. We have managed to raise the quality of significant numbers of articles. But with this ever changing beast that is wikipedia there is no room of complacency and there is a mountain of editing work still to do. The member project space has developed and the latest developments are more Outreach options for your use and the establishment of the first "Task Force" for special interest areas within the overall purview of the project. There are now well over 7000 articles taged as part of the project! Member news The project has currently 192 members, 15 joined & 1 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of November 2006. Other news The Literature Portal reached featured status! Auto list news These are constantly being worked on. Particularly Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/NovelsInCompleteInfobox which is due for a refresh, but this is a bit delayed. However there is still plenty of work to do. Project news The month has been a quiet one for the project with little obvious interaction, although editors have been very busy working on article improvement, recategorisation, and assessments. The Short story task force have been slowly adding staff and working mostly in the early stages to tag existing "short story" and "short story collection" articles. Member news The project has currently 204 members, 13 joined & 1 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of January 2007 Other news The Short story task force now has 6 participants, do join in if you have an interest. Also do let us know if other Task Forces could be established. Auto list news NovelsInCompleteInfobox worklist has been worked through, mainly due to the efforts of Jask99; it has now only the most difficult to complete. Project news We are on the cusp of having 9000 novel and other narrative prose articles tagged as part of the project. With this volume of articles, we need all the editorial help we can get. Now there are three Task Forces ("Short story", "Science Fiction" & "Crime") - see below Member news The project has currently 214 members, 8 joined & 1 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of February 2007 Other news The Assessment department has managed to assess (in some form) nearly all the main articles. The emphasis will now change to identifying needed article improvement, however keeping a watch on newly tagged articles with a view to properly assess those. A new Peer review department has kicked off with one of my early articles as a starting point. Please do give it a look, start reviewing and suggest other articles that you believe could benefit from another pair of eyes. The Children and Young Adult Literature portal was created by User:KGV, go take a look. Auto list news Currently stalled - if anyone has the means to help out here with re-generation of these list - please do! Current debates The End of Fair Use? is notification of a serious debate going on across WikiPedia. Another possible problem hasn't really got going as a debate but maybe should have. It highlights a need to put in content to articles that asserts "notability" and gives proper referencing to articles. Task Forces Short story task force is about short stories and short story collections. Crime task force is about Crime, Detective & Mystery novels, novellas, novelettes & short stories. Science fiction task force is about Science fiction novels, novellas, novelettes & short stories. Project news The project has now passed the 10,000 article tagged as in scope. It is hoped to see much more effort going into the improvement of these articles. Those of particular concern are those of "high" or even "top" importance/priority that are still only stubs. If any of these are about anything you know about or can quickly research please add what you can. Member news The project has currently 217 members, 5 joined & 2 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of March 2007 Other news A bot compiled list of new literature related pages is now available at Portal:Literature/New pages. The peer review department of the Novels WikiProject is always open for peer reviewing articles. Department & Task Force news We now have five administration Departments which now include an Automation Department which is the home for support and administration of automated update activity. Anyone with such experience and can get involved look in here for work ideas and to make suggestions. The three task forces are gradually growing but need support to succeed. Also if you have further such ideas for co-operation - also let us know. At the Short Story task force we have just started to consider what a standard short story article should ideally include and an article pattern template debate has started here. Auto list news Our Auto Generated lists appear to have lost the editor who created and supported them. If any other editors have the ability and are willing to have a stab at producing replacement updates, please let us know. Project news The peer review department of the Novels WikiProject is running well after the start in February, having 2 new articles under review: So You Want to Be a Wizard and To Kill a Mockingbird. Our article count has leapt again rising to over 11500. Do get stuck in and assist in improving this rising tide of narrative prose related material. A statistical count of articles can be found here. We have a new project page for Article Style Guidelines which has had a few editors work on it. Currently based on our existing article template it needs some extra eyes to hone any rough edges. (n.b. also see debates below!) Also to accommodate this page the main navigation template has been slightly reorganised. Member news The project has currently 236 members, 7 joined & 0 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of May 2007 Other news The Brothers Karamazov (nom.) was demoted from Featured Article status for concerns over sources, structure, and coverage/focus. The 2007 Wikipedia Selection for schools, targeted around the UK National Curriculum, included 39 novels. Volunteers at Wikipedia had suggested articles considered valuable and relevant for inclusion. See here and the WP Signpost news. Novel related news Shantaram to marry Princess Gregory David Roberts, author of Shantaram, a reformed Australian convicted armed robber has just announced his engagement to Princess Francoise Sturdza of Switzerland, who he plans to marry soon. His life has changed dramatically for the best after the release of his first novel four years ago, which depicted his life in India after escaping from prison. A movie based on his novel is planned for production later this year, starring Johnny Depp in the lead role. [1] Shannara series purchased by Warner Bros The film rights to The Shannara Series by Terry Brooks have been picked up by Warner Bros. They plan to first develop The Elfstones of Shannara, the second book in the series as the opening movie and writers are now being sought for the adaptation. The first book The Sword of Shannara, was published in 1977 and was the first fantasy book to reach, and then top, the New York Times Best Seller list. See the discussion here it has some potentially very important ideas to consider and possibly contribute to. Novel related news The Novel - (author notes by kind permission of Gregory David Roberts) What is a novel? What are the elements that must be found in any piece of writing for it to be considered a novel? I think it fair to say that traditional definitions of the word “novel” work along these lines: A novel is a fictitious prose story of book length. In my view, a novel has six basic elements: 1) It must have a society of characters; 2) They must be undergoing transformations; 3) And those must be in the course of a sustained prose narrative; 4) The sustained prose narrative must be impelled by a plot; 5) And it must be unified by clearly discernible central themes; 6) And to the extent possible, it must be universalised by a complex architecture of allegorical and symbolical sub-strata. Project news During August we signed up to the WikiProject advertising facility {{wikipedia ads}} initiative. Our tagged articles now number over 14,000 and more are being added every day. In reality the article count for our project scope is likely to be much higher so the more who can get involved and assist the process of improving the quality of the articles the better. Member news The project has currently 261 members, 7 joined & 0 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of August 2007. A number of editors have signed up to our "task forces" without signing to the main project so the figure could be slightly higher. Other news Although many editors are doing sterling work actually working on writing and maintaining articles we could always do with more volunteers to assist with the project wide tasks. Our Collaboration of the Month is in need of more suggested articles for our attention and more votes for those already proposed. Novel related news The eagerly awaited Fatal Revenant by Stephen Donaldson is ever closer now, due for release October 9, 2007 in the U.S., October 18 in the UK. As the second part of the The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever#The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant it should seal the character of this trilogy as the closing set from this classic sequence of fantasy novels. Current debates One experienced editor has requested feedback on guidelines such as WP:FICT and WP:WAF. Check out his comments first and get your views felt. Project news A fairly quiet month in November. However we had a fairly successful COTM with the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland article with 85 modifications made. The success of which I will leave to your assessment. Member news The project has currently 290 members, 8 joined & 0 leavers since the start of November 2007 Task force news The Fantasy task force has got off to a really good start with now 13 members. Do cooperate one with another and make it really work for us. If any group of editors sees a need for a new "task force" then let us know. Also we can link a WikiProject in as a task force (as Australian task force), this has the benefit of reducing the level of effort dissipation and also advertising interest areas in more than one location. Novel related news The slightly controversial novel series in the fantasy genre, the The Sword of Truth series by American writer Terry Goodkind reaches its conclusion with the publication of the final novel Confessor. It is controversial for its espousal of the writer's objectivist philosophy. Slightly old news now but Madeleine L'Engle (born November 29, 1918), the American writer best known for her children's books, particularly the Newbery Medal-winning A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet and Many Waters, has died of natural causes on September 6, 2007 taken from the Portal:Literature - news section Current debates Some discussion is going on about the "Activation of Members". Project news Welcome to a new calendar year (for most of us!) During 2007 we have seen membership grow from just below 200 to just below 300. Also our tagged article count now runs at about 16,000 considerably up on this time last year. It highlights the message given from last year that there is much work to do improving and caring for this corner of our "wikiworld". Sadly our Auto-list editor moved on and we sorely need an able replacement. On a more positive note we have seen the establishment of task forces, style guidelines and peer review. Our latest outreach initiative is the Novels Job Centre. Member news The project has currently 299 members, 9 joined & 0 leavers since the start of November 2007 n.b. this graph copy has been included as a "one off" example just for this newsletter to let you see the addition to our membership page. Project news We have had a solid month with an increase of project tagging work. We now have a bit of a backlog of assessments needed. Member news The project has currently 305 members, 6 joined & 0 leavers since the start of January 2008. The member page has been reorganized with it being noted that many member are largely inactive. However this is not unusual for WikiProjects and we have a very loyal core of editors who work diligently away often without recognition. Other news Many book cover images were tagged for deletion because of missing or incorrect fair use rationales in January. Several notes on this subject were placed on the General Forum. Task force news There is a new 19th century task force. if this is an area of interest for you join in and help out. Cover images

I am surprised you haven't fallen over this problem before. Some are insisting that all "Fair use" justified images also use a template to structure the information added in support of the copyright images used for cover illustration. Some of us have been highly miffed by this practice, although it may have plenty of merit, is has the effect of upsetting all who have added images via the rules in force at the time of upload. Anyway if you are willing to try and keep these people happy, which I have tried to do myself. the template with a sample verbage uis below

Project news Elections are now taking place for coordinators of the project for the next three months. Any editors interested in seeking a coordinator position, or who want a say in who is selected, should indicate as much here. Member news The project has currently 381 members, 69 joined & 0 leavers since the start of March 2008. Other news The project's long-time lead coordinator, Kevinalewis, has announced he is not standing as a candidate for another term in that capacity. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to him for the extraordinary work he has done for this project. To Kill a Mockingbird was promoted to Featured Article status on April 3. This brings our FA count to 13! It has been suggested that WikiProject Sword of Truth be merged into WP:NOVELS, perhaps as a task force. Task force news Two inactive projects were converted into task forces, so Chronicles of Narnia task force and Lemony Snicket task force have been created. People interested in the aforementioned subjects are encouraged to support the new task forces. (Thank to Wassupwestcoast for the tip) Novel related news The science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke died on 19 March aged 90. Current debates There is a discussion regarding further task forces for other genres of fiction now taking place here. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Armbears.jpg}

Thank you for uploading Image:Armbears.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

• That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
• That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Proposed deletion of Face of the Enemy (novel)

The article Face of the Enemy (novel) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails book notability guidelines. Source searches reveal no reviews in major, independent, reliable sources that confer significant coverage. Mainly just fan fiction.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
