Administrators' newsletter – January 2022

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.

Miscellaneous

  • The functionaries email list (functionaries-en@lists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Question from Synogeek (03:27, 8 January 2022)

Hi Pbsouthwood,

Happy New Year and I hope you are doing well. Can you confirm if my article does qualify to be included?

Thanks in advance.

Synogeek --Synogeek (talk) 03:27, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Synogeek, When you ask someone to look at a page, it is standard procedure to link to that page in the request, so that anyone reading the request can be unambiguously sure which page you refer to. It can also save the time of trying to remember the page or work it out, so is considered respectful of the other person's time. Besides that, I am well, thank you for the kind thought, and I trust you too are doing well and this will continue in the new year. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 17:54, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from Synogeek (03:42, 10 January 2022)

Hi Pbsouthwood,

I appreciate your feedback. Here is the link for the draft that I was referring to: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Synologit

Thanks in advance for your help.

Question from 12Moon ligh12 (13:48, 10 January 2022)

Hi Pbsouthwood, practicing in your sandbox is a good thing when testing things, article’s, and signatures rather than my own talk page?

12Moon_ligh12 - - 12Moon ligh12 (talk) 13:48, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

12Moon ligh12, your own sandbox is specifically intended as a place where you can get experimental without disrupting the encyclopedia if things go wrong, so yes, it is the right place for those activities. Some rules regarding content still apply. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 14:36, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from Jeramieconner777 (09:16, 12 January 2022)

Hello I pray you are well and in good health

I've always wondered why we couldn't take a cable to space and drop it back to Earth having attached the cable to a structure in orbit that will hold it and the other end of the cable being down to the Earth. A platform could take people and equipment up to the platform in space.

Is that something impossible? --Jeramieconner777 (talk) 09:16, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Not possible with current materials technology. See Space elevator. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 11:05, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from Arctic Productions (14:45, 22 February 2022)

Hi, how can I upload a picture for my page/company page that I just made? I wanted to add our logo there. --Arctic Productions (talk) 14:45, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Arctic Productions As your user name has been blocked for contravening the user name rules, and the page has been deleted as blatant advertising, there is no point in uploading a picture. If you intend to return to Wikipedia with a new account, acceptable user name and start editing according to the rules, feel free to come back to me for information on uploading images. At this point I will mention that we mostly upload images to Wikimedia Commons, where they must comply with the free licensing requirements. Non-free images may be uploaded to Wikipedia for a very specific and limited set of use cases. A company logo may qualify for this use, but only for a legitimate article about a notable company. Question from Alhassan Mohammed Awal (16:56, 23 February 2022)

how do i create my user page? --Alhassan Mohammed Awal (talk) 16:56, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Alhassan Mohammed Awal, You appear to have already created your user page at 22:39, on 30 January 2021‎. If you want to know what you can put on it, see Wikipedia:User pages. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 04:07, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Alhassan Mohammed Awal, You are welcome. Bear in mind that a blue link on Wikipedia indicates that the linked page exists, and a standard Wikimedia user signature links to the person's user page, so in most cases a blue signature implies the existence of a user page. Wikipedia Page for Mi

How do I find my Wikipedia Page I created for myself on the Wikipedia Website? Williamjamesbestmi (talk) 19:33, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Williamjamesbestmi Your user page was deleted because it contravened the restrictions on user page content. Please read and understand Wikipedia:User pages before attempting to create a new version. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:01, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Question from Williamjamesbestmi on User:Williamjamesbestmi (19:08, 1 March 2022)

Hi! Is there a way I can save my progress on here? I’ve done this about three times and after adding all of the links to the hyperlinks so many times it gets sort of exhausting. How may I save my progress so that it will always have a draft saved for before the page gets published? --Williamjamesbestmi (talk) 19:08, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Williamjamesbestmi Wikipedia software saves when you publish. Your browser may or may not save the draft automatically in case you lose the Internet connection temporarily, but if you close the tab it is gone. The rule of thumb is if your unpublished work exceeds what you are willing to redo, consider publishing what you have done so far. This may vary with circumstances: if your connection is unreliable you may want to publish more frequently than when you have a good connection, and if your browser does not save your draft you should also publish more frequently.
You can also prepare a document on a word processor and save it locally until complete, then copy - paste to the Wiki editor window. This is best done as a .txt file so there is no conflict with markup, but this method does not let you preview as a wiki page. It may also make a difference whether you are using visual editor or source editor. I always do large edits on the source editor, so don't really know if the visual editor works differently for this issue. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:26, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Question from Williamjamesbestmi on User:Williamjamesbestmi (19:11, 1 March 2022)

I am also curious how I fix the errors with a few of the hyperlinks I did upload because it says the links were no good and that they need to be converted. How exactly do I find which links need it and how do I convert them? --Williamjamesbestmi (talk) 19:11, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

You can test the links to see if they work correctly by simply clicking on them and seeing what happens. When you have identified the problems, open the section to edit and make the corrections, then publish again. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:33, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Innovation Endeavors

Hi Peter, very nice to meet you. My name is Ali, I work for venture capital firm Innovation Endeavors and have drafted an article in userspace due to my COI. I see that you are a member of WP:TECH and WP:ENGINEERING and that you are interested in biology and biotech, so thought you might be willing to take a look. Hope to discuss this further, AJ Innovation Endeavors (talk) 19:19, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Ali, My interests are in actual technology, engineering, and biology, the sort of stuff that gets written up in textbooks and professional journals, not in orgnisations and companies, but I am willing to advise or point you towards places you can get advice. Unfortunately you have jumped in at the deep end wearing concrete socks by taking a username that does not comply with our username policy, and starting a draft for an organisation with almost the same name, which has led to an indefinite block for that user name, without necessarily any prejudice against you as a person, Your draft was deleted primarily because of your username, though I cannot comment on any other possible problems it may have, since I did not investigate. Wikipedia does not allow edits by blocked users, including any edits by an unacceptable username made before the block actually occurs. The first thing to do is get a compliant user name that does not suggest that it officially represents a company or any other group of people. The policy page referring is at Wikipedia:Username policy, particularly the sections WP:ORGNAME and WP:ISU.
The other problem is that as a new editor with a clear CoI you will have to establish the company's notability beyond reasonable doubt (this is not a special condition, but it may be scrutinised more thoroughly than an article submitted by a trusted contributor with considerable experience). I suggest that you follow the Wikipedia:Articles for creation process very carefully, first establishing notability before filling in any details that may be derived from anything less than totally reliable independent sources. You may also get good advice at the Wikipedia:Teahouse. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 12:18, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Texas Lane What template won't show up where? · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 18:42, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
Oh... It's the one at the bottom of my user page. en.m.wikipedia/wiki/user:Texas_Lane Texas Lane (talk) 20:50, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
Texas Lane, That was because it was not an actual template. A template call only works with a template that exists, because the code transcludes the content defined on the page that is called, but it looks like Sporkbot put the correct template on your user page and you worked out how to fill in the parameters. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 04:01, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Feedback Request: Draft Stephen James O’Meara Page

Hi Peter. You kindly replied to my request for feedback on a draft page on Stephen James O’Meara. I replied a few days later, but I think by then the comment had been archived and not seen. What should I do? Should I start a new request for comment? Thanks. Hksq (talk) 01:34, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Hksq, A new request for comment is unlikely to elicit any significantly different response, but that it just my opinion. The problem remains that the references provided do not adequately establish notability by English Wikipedia's standards. Whether a topic is notable by other standards is technically irrelevant if it is not notable by the criteria applied for inclusion in Wikipedia, as it must be possible for other people to verify the claims of notability against published sources. Please read Wikipedia:Notability, where the policy is spelled out in detail. Listing the person's works and biography are things that can be done in an article once notability has been established, they do not establish notability.
If you want to be reasonably sure that someone is aware of your response to a comment, you can ping them using any one of several methods, which cause an alert message to be generated and a little red number to show up at the top of any page they open until they acknowledge the ping in some way. This is explained at Help:Notifications. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 04:54, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
Hi again Peter. Thanks for that comment and that tip. I’m going to see if I can establish notability according to WP:AUTHOR, which seems relevant here. Regards. Hksq (talk) 03:35, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Comment on your comment

At Talk:Asquith Xavier. You said "If there were no photo, the painting could be used following precedent for every person depicted on Wikipedia who lived before the age of photography, or who was never photographed while alive. I doubt this would be considered controversial."

This makes an amount of sense, however, Wiki unseen has on the to-do list [1] Yeshaq I, 15th century. I looked and couldn't find any depiction, but I feel relatively strongly that art in articles like this should not be recent art made for the WP-purpose, it should be published in some WP:RS on history or art to have any relevance. If the artist is shown to be some sort of expert per WP:SPS, that may put things in a different light. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:28, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Gråbergs Gråa Sång, I do not see why a free licensed recent artwork done by a competent artist that verifiably looks like the subject should not be used to depict the subject. When it is unverifiable that the art looks like the subject it becomes more problematic, yet we have depictions of historical people where every picture is different (Jesus and Muhammad immediately come to mind, but there are many others), and of mythological and imaginary figures, where we can be quite sure that the rendition is not accurate in any real way, and we use those images. We also use schematic diagrams and artist's impressions of things that have never been seen, many created by users specifically for Wikipedia articles, and many of which have not been published in reliable sources, but we accept them when it is possible to visually verify that they represent the subject sufficiently accurately to be useful to the reader in helping to understand the topic. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 04:48, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
It may take more rfc:s. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:23, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
Fwiw, Esther Griffith. I still think the leadimage should be the photo. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:00, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
Agree that the lead image should be the photo. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 16:33, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Question from VirtualBeast (20:09, 18 March 2022)

Hello mentor hope your doing well.

I am glad to have you here as my mentor.

Need few assistance for Wikipedia editing i have few concerns.

Please let me how can start with

Regards --VirtualBeast (talk) 20:09, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

VirtualBeast, Let you know how you can start with what? Your question does not specify what you want to start with.
If you are asking what you can start with, that would depend on your interests and field of knowledge. It is always easiest to start by improving existing articles. Wait until you know what you are doing before trying to create new articles. It is generally easiest to start on topics in which you already have some detailed knowledge, as that will make it easier to find references, and you will recognise where content is missing, wrong, or badly expressed. Topics in which you are sufficiently interested to do serious literature research are also a good choice, as you can learn and improve Wikipedia using good references at the same time. It is recommended to keep clear of controversial topics until you are sufficiently familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidance to avoid unnecessary conflicts with other editors Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 06:12, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

Question from Narmerae on Draft:Miran Kujundžić (18:20, 30 March 2022)

Hi, I created this page 2 days ago and I submitted it for public viewership. It got declined and as I am new on Wikipedia I do not know why.

Best regards, Matt --Narmerae (talk) 18:20, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Narmerae, I cannot read your sources, so have no personal opinion on their reliability or independence, but the reviewer who declined your submission did not consider them sufficient to establish notability, which is the primary requirement for accepting an article on Wikipedia, and the clearly stated reason for declining. There are other issues but until notability is established, they are not going to affect whether the article is accepted. Have you read Wikipedia:Notability? Help:Your first article and Wikipedia:Citing sources? If not please do so. You may also find a volunteer at the Wikipedia:Teahouse who has an interest in biographies of sportspoeple who can assist you in identifying more appropriate sourcing if such exists. Question from Ssali Jonathan (05:56, 15 April 2022)

Greetings Am new and I want to create articles to be displayed about my work and people around me Thank you --Ssali Jonathan (talk) 05:56, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi Ssali Jonathan, Before you start, please read, and be sure you understand, the policies and guidance (rules) restricting what content is acceptable on Wikipedia. Article creation is restricted to topics that meet the notability criteria, and content about living people must comply with the requirements for biographies of living people. Both article creation and writing about people are among the more difficult things to get right on Wikipedia, and while I do not wish to make any judgements about your personal competence, they are things that most new Wikipedians, and even some Wikipedians with a lot of experience, find very difficult to get right. I suggest you ask for advice on any specific topic for which you intend to create an article at the WP:Teahouse where there will be someone to give you appropriate advice. It is usually worth getting into Wikipedia editing gradually, by making small improvements to existing articles on topics that you are interested in, and have sufficient knowledge to be reasonably sure of what you are doing, and have access to reliable sources to reference your additions to content. If you have any specific questions on editing, and do not know where to find the answers, you are welcome to come back and ask them here. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 07:13, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Chongzhen Emperor

Hello, I really appreciate you facilitating the discussion in the talk page for I’ve tried several times to talk to YLoGM via there talk page. I don’t think they have any intention of discussing the matter any further on the article page if you look at there contributions you can see they already edited today and they’ve even edited the Chongzhen article which means they would have seen the several messages on the talk page asking for them to respond and they are most likely choosing to ignore those said messages. They will probably just ignore the situation in hope miraculously it will go away as they’ve done with my efforts to facilitate a discussion with them. I just don’t want you do be waiting endlessly for them to respond when I doubt they will. If wish to continue waiting that’s perfectly fine I just wanted to let you know what I think. Hope you’re having a good day! Orson12345 (talk) 16:31, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Orson12345 We should give them a fair opportunity to do their research. It is possible that they are trying to contact the source of the Image they believe is correctly identified, and this may take a few days. In cases like this it is quite possible that experts may change their minds based on more recent evidence, and as the source of your preferred version states, he is not personally certain which emperor the image represents, and is passing on in good faith the interpretation of the people who set up the exhibition as it was at the time he was there, which could conceivably be mistaken or have changed. I have confidence that he recorded the available descriptions accurately, but the originals silks do not appear to have any visible text identifying their subjects which could be considered definitive identification. I am not in any great rush, and it is more important to do the job well than to do it quickly. (Courtesy ping YLoGM, who may wish to comment). Orson12345, Preferably on the article talk page, where this discussion should be, so that anyone watching that page can see an open discussion based on evidence, and the discussion becomes part of the article history. I suggest you propose restoring the image with a footnote in the caption explaining that the image has been disputed and why it may reasonably be considered valid. If there are no policy or logic based arguments against your proposal, you edit it into the article, referring to the discussion in the edit summary. If there are policy, evidence, or logic based objections, deal with them appropriately. Ping interested and affected parties to the discussion. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 13:29, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

I want to express my appreciation for your help in settling this dispute. Thank you so much! Orson12345 (talk) 15:27, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

Question from Jin yangyang on Help:Contents (00:36, 11 May 2022)

Hello, I'm going to help my husband to have one wiki, but I don't know how to do it , it make's me confused , would you like to help me ? --Jin yangyang (talk) 00:36, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

@Jin yangyang:, I will try to help, but I need clear information on what you want to do.
It is not clear to me if you want to help your husband set up a Mediawiki wiki on an external server, create an article on English Wikipedia about your husband, or something else. Please explain. Regards, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 06:46, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Detail

[2] I'm picky here, but you're using a 2006 source to say something about 2014. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:11, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Gråbergs Gråa Sång, Fair enough, it might have expanded since then, maybe we can get something more up to date. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 08:40, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
I asked Divingenthusiast. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:58, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, Gråbergs Gråa Sång, I was just about to do that myself. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 09:02, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
GMTA. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:20, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
FSD? ;-) · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 09:26, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
Pardon a Swede, I don't get that one. Free Shit Day doesn't seeem to apply. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:32, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
For sure dude? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:33, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
I assumed that your GMTA meant "great minds think alike", to which the traditional self-deprecatory/humorous response is "fools seldom differ", in this case initialised to match. Moderately obscure English humour. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 09:52, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
I've learned something today! Never had that reply to a GMTA. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:02, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

Question from Assastiano11 (19:01, 16 May 2022)

C'est possible d'écrire ma biographie ? --Assastiano11 (talk) 19:01, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

Assastiano11, Please excuse that I respond in English, but this is English Wikipedia.
In reply to your question;
  • I do not know who you are, so cannot assess whether your biography would meet the notebility requirements of English Wikipedia. If you do not meet the notability standards, any biography about you will be deleted.
  • Biographies on Wikipedia may never be autobiographies, they should be written by third parties without a conflict of interest, generally by persons with no personal or financial connection to the subject.
  • On English Wikipedia, all content except occasional quotes must be written in English. Content in French may be submitted to French Wikipedia, if it meets their criteria for inclusion, which may be similar to those of English Wikipedia, but I am not personally familiar with them.
  • If you are confident that you meet notability criteria, you may request an article through the requested articles process. It you do this, it will be helpful to provide a list of independent reliable sources to support your claim of notability. You are not required to identify yourself as the subject of the request, and there is no guarantee that anyone will take on the request, as Wikipedia is written by volunteers who choose what they want to work on.
  • Before making such a request, it is recommended that you read and accept the policies on content of biographies of living people, as once the biography exists and complies with the notability requirements, it will not be deleted on request of the subject.
  • If anything is unclear, or you have further questions, please ask. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 06:50, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
