updates

Hey, I got right on mine this time. I finished the first half. I finished up to Kotomitsuki in "finished" articles, and up to Kasuganishiki in "need work" articles. You start from Kotooshu (though I suspect he is finished already). ACSE has already finished some of them rather randomly (maybe his favorites?). It seems I got all the interesting updates, though I promise I didn't plan it that way. BTW, like a little boy, I sat in front of the TV with my hand on the edit button, waiting for Oshu's final bout to be over, so that me, myself, and I could be the one to record Oshu's yusho in his tourney box. It was quite childish of me, but it was fun. I don't know if ASCE or someone else has updated Oshu's info box or not.

Yeah, it is probably faster to use the active wrestlers list as a base for updating, but I thought it would be easier to figure a halfway point using the WP list. I am hard at work (too hard maybe) on the past wrestlers list. Am sure you've noticed. FourTildes (talk) 06:52, 26 May 2008 (UTC) FourTildes (talk) 10:54, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey, sorry, I forgot about Banzuke updates again. If there is anything left for me to do, let me know. FourTildes (talk) 20:39, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, I didn't notice until today. Been giving up the computer to my wife recently (she has a lot more "real" work to do on it than I do. Anyway, I may not be around (on vacation) by the end of the next basho, depending on the final dates I decide on. Will let you know. FourTildes (talk) 22:39, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

records article

Yes, I also thought that seemed like a good list article. You could put kinboshi in there as well and take them out of the kinboshi article. I like these lists as well. I am learning lots of little tidbits about wrestlers of antiquity from my little project as well. My wife tells me that extra shove Asa gave Hakuho is all over the news. When I saw it live, I definitely thought it was way overboard. In pro wrestling no one would think second about it. I like that sumo holds itself to a higher standard. I know Asa is frustrated, but yeesh. FourTildes (talk) 09:53, 26 May 2008 (UTC) When you want to, why don't you give the list a try, something like "achievement records in sumo" maybe? Or maybe there is a more apt title that hasn't occured to me. If you give it start, you know I won't be able to keep my hands completely off it. I rather like the synergy you, ASCE and I have, fixing each other's work here and there. You have seen how fast he jumped on adding wikitables back into the distant past sumo articles after I started it? He just pumped out another one a few hours ago for one of the Shiranui's I forget which. We are a keen team. FourTildes (talk) 10:14, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey, I didn't find your test page for the sumo records; I can be clueless at times. I was going thru all the wrestlers in the past wrestlers list, when I got to Tochiazuma (II). I noticed you finally updated his tourney table. Ah. It had to happen. It was my little secret to myself that one of my original tables was still there. Not that it shouldn't have been updated of course... FourTildes (talk) 21:49, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

I was hoping you hadn't noticed those others. I have always loved Takanonami. He was the one Ozeki during a long dry period. He lasted there forever. He is really tall and would kind of lift everyone out. I saw him announcing on TV the day before, and then after Kotooshu's big day was over, I was scrounging around for one more of one of the things I am planning to send you, and I almost walked right into him coming out of a side office. He probably thought I had no idea who he was, but I did; I just said sorry, and got out of his way. Found your page, will check it out. FourTildes (talk) 22:12, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Your page looks pretty good. Most of the things I thought of are probably just things you haven't added yet. They are mostly top 10 lists, so maybe this could be mentioned in the beginning blurb. Each separate section could have some explication at the beginning what a championship entails or explaining the fact that many of the records are held by more modern wrestlers only because there are so many more basho than there were back then. I think kinboshi would fit right in here, just put in the table from the kinboshi article, complete with explanation and redirect all kinboshi references there; an idea anyway. FourTildes (talk) 01:26, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, the name sounds fine to me. Sometimes you need to get it out there and then a better name idea might come along. Wiki makes it easy enough to change if we think of something better. Looking forward to seeing it. Sorry I went crazy with my edits across all the past sumo articles. Sometimes I get something going, and I just can't stop until I've finished. I got the top division sections consistent and the see alsos where I want them, and now I am back on filling in info for the past wrestlers' page. FourTildes (talk) 08:35, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Ha, just as I was looking at your see also wikilinks to the records list, the title: list of sumo record holders occurred to me. Seems slightly more apt, but we can stick with the name we have for now, an even better one might come along, and there are always redirects. FourTildes (talk) 11:00, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

We certainly have a hodge podge of back and forths here don't we? Too much trouble for me to even bother with titles for topic changes. Your records article is looking good, fun to compare as well. I often forget, for example, how close Chiyonofuji came to matching Taiho's wins. And could Kaio maybe stick it out for a little over a year and beat Takamiyama's once unassailable tournament lead? There have been rumors of his retirement for years, but he still sticks it out, and he still at ozeki. Anyway, I also wanted to ask, do you think it is overkill to add "heya" or "stable" as column in the past wrestlers article? Thought it might be interesting, but not sure. Might get too cluttered as well. Do you know of any other stray wrestlers not on this page? I see no reason not to add the odd one who never found much success. If you know of any, let me know. FourTildes (talk) 00:05, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey is a "longest at ozeki" list overkill for the records article? It would be another one with active wrestlers looking to move up on it. On a whim, I put sumopedia.org into my browser hoping to find something interesting. It exists, started in Feb 2008 I think. The problem is, so far it is only wholly copied sections of wikipedia articles that have to do with sumo (my hands have been all over the main sumo article for so long that I find it almost creepy when I see things I wrote or heavily edited being canned and put up somewhere else, like here for example). Looks like noone has bothered to add anything else to it. They haven't even bothered to copy the tourney template. Nice idea I guess. Back to WIKIpedia: Somebody has added a few pics to wrestler articles, it seems. They look good. I tried to add a few I took a while back, but I am too cheap to buy a nice camera and they just don't turn out that well. Maybe I'll give it another try soon. They add a lot to the "real" feel of an article. FourTildes (talk) 20:21, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

back to beya-sics

Get the pun? Heh.. Anyway, I decided making a heya column is pretty much overkill. Too many dead links or repeats with the bigger heya. But then, looking at the "sumo beya" list I made then ignored gave me an idea. How about consolidating all heya and their information (and redirects) into 5 separate Ichimon articles? This would eliminate heya links with no articles, and also make the layout more interesting for heya that don't have much info. What do you think? In recent years, there are a few completely independent heya, they could under an "independent heya" article. Or is this all unfeasible? I just thought of it minutes before I posted here, and haven't really thought it through. FourTildes (talk) 07:06, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

image

Thanks for the Kisenosato heads up. I thought I had something amiss. Update, some guy came along and deleted the pic even after I had put the tag in, so I put it up again getting it right from the beginning. FourTildes (talk) 00:11, 31 May 2008 (UT

Hey I was having some problems getting Dejima's picture up and I asked you if you could help, but I stuck with it and figured it out. I wanted to put his up b/c it turned out nicer than the other pictures I took in the Hatsu Basho FourTildes (talk) 01:07, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

As you have probably noticed, I put up some more. A few are a little out of focus, but they don't look too bad when the picture is smaller, and it's better than nothing I surmised. Can you take a look at the Kokkai Futoshi article? He already had a good picture (all the white guys do), but I added another at the bottom. Is that him? It looks like him, but I can't figure out why his top knot wouldn't be splayed out they way it is usually done, like the other sekitori in the pictures I took. Maybe he is a lower guy? I am not sure about the placement of the picture either. FourTildes (talk) 11:24, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

The blurriest one is Hokutoriki (pretty sure it's him anyway). Too blurry? Maybe I should take that one off. That is pretty much all I have for now. FourTildes (talk) 11:49, 31 May 2008 (UTC) Ah, I see you have already reduced Hokutoriki's image. I tried that too, but only previewed it. FourTildes (talk) 11:51, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

I just added Toyohibiki, truly the last close up I have. At first I thought it was too blurry, but one second look it is actually noticeably better than Hokutoriki. Yeah, when I actually started adding the images, I realized I had a lot more than I thought I did. Glad I finally decided they were worth putting up. I hadn't realized how few Makuuchi wrestlers actually had photos. FourTildes (talk) 12:09, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Keisuke Itai

Updated DYK query On 5 June, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Keisuke Itai, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Redirect

Hey, I just saw above you got another "Did you know?" Way to go! Anyway, I took the liberty of redirecting your "sumo records" article to List of sumo record holders because I do think the title is more apt. I have done all the redirects as well. I figured it should be done before the link was put in the see also's of too many articles. Hope I haven't jumped the gun. Feel free to chastise me. Part of the reason I did it is that I have been really really busy lately and wanted to feel I was making a contribution here and knew the redirect we mentioned wouldn't take long at all. FWIW, I did start seriously considering how to handle a possible, Ichimon approach to the heya. I experimented with a few ways to present heya information in some kind of table format, my very truncated experimental results for Hakkaku beya can be seen here: User:FourTildes/sandbox. Don't know if I'll ever get around to it, it would be a big task. FourTildes (talk) 20:39, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey PK, I should have been more careful about the RD I guess. Back when I knew less about what makes wikipedia tick, I would have "moved" it, but I thought a RD was faster. But of course, I completely blew off the history getting lost (or at least misplaced). I'll be more conscientious in the future. FourTildes (talk) 07:45, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Yusho

Very interesting stuff, and (hopefully) uncontroversial, as it comes with a source. I definitely think you should use it. It is too cumbersome for the sumo article and probably even this list of sumo tournament winners; the only place I can think that would suit this interesting info is the yusho article. If we think of a better place later, it is not much trouble to move it. FourTildes (talk) 21:53, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Great work, not a hint of stubbiness. Already looks polished and ready to go. FourTildes (talk) 09:00, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

GA Review of Takanohana Koji

I will review this article over the weekend. I've had a ridiculous week so I haven't been able to set aside a nice chunk of time to review it. Wizardman 00:24, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

red boxes etc

Hey I just got back into town, was running a camp, (I'm a teacher, if that's never come up before). If you aren't through with these updates, I can help. Let me know. BTW, I do indeed go on vacation from the 24th and will not be able to make basho updates, sorry. FourTildes (talk)

out

Yeah, I thought it was rather controversial, but only after I saw the replay. It was kind of keen to see Tochinonada go up the scale in kinboshi (and to get your list updated!), but I wish Asashoryu would have stayed in it longer. He didn't look that hurt to me, and I wonder if he isn't just bowing out early to save face. As I am sure you know, enough losses early on, no matter how good a yokozuna is or was, can be enough for pressure to be put on him to retire. If you think about all the pressures and lifestyle forced on these guys, you wonder why any one wants to enter sumo at all. Good on the the guys who keep trying though. FourTildes (talk) 11:05, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

I'd put my money on Ama. Those Kotos, they have issues. I wish Kotooshu especially could have held out a little longer before the doubts started creeping in again... FourTildes (talk) 21:44, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

jumped gun

Sorry, PK3, I just had to jump the gun when Kaio tied Taiho's makuuchi wins on your Holders page. I leave for my plane in a few short hours and wanted to have some contribution to the updates, however small. I think I did it right, and I realize chances are he will pass Taiho this tournament (if not today), but I won't be here when he inevitably goes into solid 3rd place. I didn't think you would mind too much. Of course, I also jumped the gun on Asashoryu's early drop out. I only did this to see what feedback I would get (and yes, I did get a "should we be updating so early?" message on my Userpage). I was hoping to use that feedback to generate some help with updating at the end of the tournament (yes just you and I and ASCE can do it, but some more teamwork wouldn't hurt). I don't know if my entreaty was successful or not though. Anyway, enjoy the rest of the tournament. When I think about it I'll check in now and then. FourTildes (talk) 21:44, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Project News
  • As you may have seen, the talk page banner changed a bit. It has a couple of bugs (most notably the categorisation problems), but the {{WPBannerMeta}} standardisation was long overdue. Thank you to Dendodge for sorting it.
  • The newsletter's back after a very positive reaction, and thanks are again due to Dendodge.
  • Article adoptions: Heather Mills will be a hot topic next month, as the truth will be referenced.
  • The hottest Project page this month has been The Quarrymen (now a GA). It reveals the most accurate history of their early days, because so many other web pages tell a completely untrue story (one web page said they lost a Carroll Levis competition to a woman who played the spoons :)

Issue of the Month

Apart from the usual vandals, there is an ongoing problem with Wikipedia editors deleting free and fair-use photos because they don't think they are of any value to articles, even though this sometimes leaves articles with no photos at all. These editors do not leave notes on talk pages, so if you see that a photo has vanished, check the talk page and the history log.

From the Editors

It's been a while, but the newsletter's back! After a short discussion on the project talk page, seemingly unanimous consensus to bring it back was reached. This issue, and subsequent ones, will probably be shorter - as we kept running out of things to say before! There's a lot to say this month, purely due to the long absence of a newsletter, but we'll keep it as brief as possible.

In order to get delivery by Denbot sorted, the special delivery interface has been changed slightly - but existing delivery options still stand. Inactive participants who want delivery should place their names on this list.

Sandbox

Hi, I need a bit of time to relax from it all but hopefully we can crack into it soon. The review has been going on for nearly a week and I'm tired and exhausted, I very much doubt that I can handle another week of this intensity. It has had a huge affect on my sleeping pattern. I have spent most of today deliberating whether or not to withdraw the nomination; the other deletion nomination didn't help. Depending on how things go over the next few days, I will likely withdraw the nomination. — Realist2 (Speak) 14:54, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

DWM 398

Seeing you added a ref from DWM 398 to 2008 Christmas special (Doctor Who), I guess you have that issue. Could you please look up what it says about Doctor Who: Proms Cutaway and change the source for "the Graske" in that article to the page on DWM 398 where it says so? TIA So#Why 14:17, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

No problem; I've added that. By the way the date on the cover is 20 August, even though it was released today... I'm not sure why they do that. Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:36, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. Weird, maybe they mixed it up in the prints with the next months date? According to their website, as I cited, it's release is July 24th. Well, you never know these days, so thanks again for the help. And don't worry about the talkback, it's no obligation to use it. But thanks for your consideration. Have a nice evening :-) So#Why 17:41, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Invincible info

Hi, when your online do you want to do that invincible info. Could we communicate on AIM please, I find communication easier and we can express ideas more fluidly. — Realist2 (Speak) 23:07, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, its only something you get on AOL. I just got online so I haven't looked at what depands I have to resolve today, hopefully if I get through todays wining we can start on it. — Realist2 (Speak) 14:17, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Can you make audio samples? I think an audio sample of D.S. would be appropriate. — Realist2 16:07, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I might withdraw in a few days, gonna keep looking for info on the actual music, if we can do that I think we have the potential to get this article to GA. There is already quite a lot of detail there for a song that was never even released as a single. I will copy and paste the article to my sandbox, if it is deleted we can always recreate it some other time if we can build something up. I think I know someone who can do an audio samples, he's done other songs by MJ, hopefully he has access to D.S. — Realist2 16:59, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I wanted to add a personnel section to the "D.S." song like this. Unfortunately the way the credits are displayed in the HIStory album booklet makes it difficult to work out who worked on what. Its all displayed in a very awkward manner. Do you have the album/know enough about the song to help. I've tried looking elsewhere online (very briefly) and didn't find anything. — Realist2 01:36, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
It's set out in a very similar manner to the actual article seen here. From the booklet it's basically impossible to prove who worked on what. Also, recently you added some info on Q's review of HIStory, don't suppose they mentioned D.S. in any way? I've never been able to find there review to read it.— Realist2 15:52, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

updates and all that

Hey, I remember the banzuke came out yesterday (my time) and was wondering if you were planning to do those right away and wanted any help. But I saw your message at the top and maybe you are taking a break from wikipedia for while. If I don't hear from you in a day or so, then I will do the updates myself (I suppose it is easier to do them now rather than after the basho). No sweat if you are taking a break for whatever reason. FourTildes (talk) 03:45, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Hey I thought you said you might (or were) moving to the US. I guessed at that as a reason. Um, can I ask where in the US (it's a big place right?) You can always email with this if you want. To be honest I am kind of enjoying do the updates. I did the "active wrestlers" update for the first time, and kind of enjoyed it. I can do the pre-basho updates, b/c I am up early today and enjoying it. If you find you have time/energy at the end of the basho, let's cooperate on the updates then. FourTildes (talk) 19:04, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Q review of HIStory

Hi if you have access to Q's review of the album, could you let me know if they said anything about Scream/Childhood. Thank you. — Realist2 19:10, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Record holders, etc

I was updating Kaio's records, and there was one inconsistency. To get his "top division bouts" number, I went to his page on the Sumo kyokai page and added his losses + wins to get the new number. This puts him at 28 more than the number that you had previously listed. I am not sure if I am figuring the number right, and I don't know which of the sources you got your numbers from. I decided to go ahead and put the number that I had, but I was hoping you could check it. With the new number Kaio moves into 5th place, if it's correct that is.

On other fronts, I have been updating the rikishi post basho, and also adding photos that I took on Day 14 for wrestlers that don't have them. All current Makuuchi rikishi who have articles now have a picture. (except for Homasho who sat out this tournament). I also have several pictures for Juryo rikishi. If/when we make articles for the current Makuuchi guys like Chiyohakuho, I very likely have pictures for most/all of them (not totally sure, as I am not that familiar with their faces yet). And as this time of year is warmer, I took many pictures of wrestlers in their colorful robes not covered up by those plain overcoats they are wearing in most of the pictures I previously uploaded. If I get around to it, I may use these news pics and update the info box pics of a number of wrestlers. We'll see. Take care.

Yes, I did indeed do all the updates by myself. I kind of got a buzz out of it, you learn a lot that way, eh? I learned a lot about wrestlers that I have never paid any or much attention to while I was updating. I see you are already have been doing some tidying and updating as well. Hope you are enjoying your new life in New Jersey; never been there myself. FourTildes (talk) 06:40, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

!

I was toying with the idea of putting some of my sumo pics up on Japanese wikipedia, when I noticed that someone has ported our Makuuchi record template for wrestlers to the Japanese wikipedia! I must say it looks pretty spiffy in Japanese. It looks like a number of people have started putting up tables for the main rikishi since late September. I can't help but feel proud b/c I came up with the concept and layout (though Csernica of course did the template). Hee! I almost want to point this out on that sumo forum site that belittled our efforts. If Japanese wikipedia is emulating our efforts, we are really making a difference. Did you know about this?

I have just checked and even some retired wrestlers have the ported tables. Now that the template is made they simply have to paste the info we already compiled when they edit the tables in. Heh, we had to do all the hard work. FourTildes (talk) 06:15, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I decided to add in some tables that hadn't been done yet in the Japanese wikipedia, and I see my pictures of wrestlers are also being used on the Japanese wikipedia site. My head is swelling slightly....(; FourTildes (talk) 10:04, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes, early on I was expecting the Japanese wiki would be a source for pics, etc. as well. At day 14 of the last basho when I took all the latest pics; I saw plenty of people taking photos. I got to talking to a few. Many were taking better pictures than mine with really nice cameras. Most knew what wikipedia was, but they scoffed at the idea of using "their" pictures on wiki. People can be so possessive. FourTildes (talk) 20:27, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

No sweat about the banzuke updates (or the mixed metaphors!), you have done them on your lonesome before as well.FourTildes (talk) 01:20, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Nice job done on the Sumo pages. Shame about Araiso Beya. I studied there, back in 1998, with the hope of becoming a Sumo wrestler but couldn't in the end. - leveni 2oct2008 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.63.134.237 (talk) 11:25, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
