Computer reading glasses

Hiya, I am intrigued by your mention of computer reading glasses. I've just started wearing reading glasses the last year or two, and this year have started to also wear them for on-screen work (aging sucks!). However, I'm still not used to them and get eyestrain on some days. Can you recommend computer reading glasses? --JN466 11:50, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Jayen, I just got these a few weeks ago and only use them when I need them (when I use them for small type that won't enlarge, I have to readjust my eyes to even the larger types when I'm done. Even the larger type is a bit blurry, and the longer I wore the glasses, the longer it takes to readjust my eyes). I got these from the VA, by the way, so I'm afraid I don't know the actual cost, but I will say that they are at times a true benefit.

I would like to ask if it would be appropriate to cite the following website, http://www.enlightened-spirituality.org/rajneesh.html, which holds a quotation that is also in the Osho article in this section (if it hasn't been removed from the Wikipedia article). Can this website, "enlightened-spirituality.org", and its contributor, Timothy Conway, be considered a reliable source?

Usage of Fact template

Done

A Fact template was recently placed in the Fashion section of this article. Isn't this section chock full of "obvious truths"? Like "the Sun is hot" and "the Earth is round", isn't every claim in this section obviously true? If consensus agrees, then a reference source is not needed, per Template:Fact#When not to use this template, for any claim in this section. So I shall remove the Fact template in a few days unless somebody can justify its use in this section.

I just raised the following question at the Village pump (Archive Link)...

Specific template question

This is a question about a specific template, and I don't know if it's a software bug or just that the template itself needs to be adjusted (it's a complicated template, and I wouldn't dream of editing it myself as I haven't got a clue how this would be done).

Please notice that, at least in IE 7, all the flags of the "Succeeded by" states are almost invisible, with most of each flag disappearing off to the right side of the box. I logged out to check how it looked, because I've noted that pages will often have a different appearance when I am logged off. There was no difference; all "Succeeded by" flags were still cut off to the right. I also tried to increase the width of the box using the "width =" parameter. The width did increase, and I went up to 650px; however, the flags were still cut off to the right no matter how wide I made the box. I started to report this as a software bug, but since I wasn't certain it is a software bug, that page sent me to this Village pump page. How can this be fixed?

Here's another unusual case: List of Charmed characters – in this case the TOC is on the right, and many of the words in the sections run off the TOC to the right (again, in my IE7).

(out) I just learned something new about all this. I was having a problem building a Navbar (discussion here in case anybody's interested), and it was discovered that the type of skin chosen can make all the difference in the appearance of things. I had been using "Simple". Evidently, general readers of Wikipedia always use the "MonoBook" skin. I switched to MonoBook and it did make all the difference. Now the Navbar looks the same whether I'm logged in or logged out.

Pertinent to this problem, that is of text and images being cut off on the right, I checked the List of Charmed characters and it appears okay in the MonoBook skin (again using IE7 web browser). However, I also checked the Austria–Hungary article, and the flags are still only barely visible, even in MonoBook. So I'm still wondering if the Template:Infobox former country is in need of repair?

Another article has been found, the German Empire page, where the Infobox:Former Country template is used with flags. I've found that if the filename of one of the s- flags is altered, the wording pushes the right side of the template out and shows the rest of the flags. Of course, this is not a solution; however, it is at least a hint that it is the Infobox template itself that is in need of repair. I shall make my rather feeble attempt to find the problem and repair it, then I'll return here from time to time to report my progress, if any, and to pick up any tips other editors might leave here. Thank you for any help I can get!

Historical: The Template:Infobox Former Country was added to the Austria-Hungary page on 19 November 2006 by editor WhyNotFreedom – (THIS EDIT: [1])— It's beginning to seem that this Infobox has not been correct in this context from the beginning of its usage. I was hoping that I would find vandalism that went undetected, so that it would be easy to repair. Instead it looks more and more as if the Infobox is and was unable to stabilize, at least where the quirky IE browsers are concerned.

the answer to your date query is very precise. You can find in some dictionaries, such as Merriam-Webster, the first recorded use of a given word. In this case it's 1801. Peter jackson (talk) 10:33, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Peter, then as you may have seen if you clicked on the template link, such words as "recent" are to be either avoided or backed up with in-article explanations or inline citations. In this case perhaps an inline citation to a specific page in a specific reference would suffice? and the name of who coined the term, if known, might be valuable, as well. It must be done in a way that does not confuse readers, or some might think that the name itself, Buddha, originated in 1801.

  • PS. As long as the article is already, it seems it still could use a brief first section on the etymology of the word.
I don't involve myself in editing articles, so if you want your suggestions acted on I suggest you post them to the article talk page.

No, it's because there's no effective procedure for resolving content disputes & enforcing content policy. That leaves things to be haggled out among committed editors, a process I'm not interested in taking part in. It results in neutrality only by coincidence, ie if the editors' views happen to coincide with those of experts.

I was wondering...

I was wondering what happened, I saw a broken link and thought I was responsible and tried to repair it and then I saw you changed it and now I understand, thank you, I was going to ask and then I thought..It's ok anyway. I say you changed the link, personally I liked the sannyasnews citation as there are other things I would like to cite from the same source, no one was strongly objecting to that link so I feel it could have stayed, or you could have just added the conway link and left both, I felt the issue in the end was not more the sannyasnews link but the notability of the commenter. Why not have both citations? regardsOff2riorob (talk) 18:19, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

I agree that the sannyasin newsite is a burgeoning website devoted to followers of Osho, and that it appears to me to have grown enough to be used in this context. Keep in mind that it might not be suitable in all contexts, and while we didn't really get a firm "no", Jayen and others still might reject it in the future in a different context.

New Navbar template

  • NOTE: GREAT TIPS ABOUT QUICK-CHANGES TO DIFFERENT SKINS BELOW!

Okay, now, don't laugh... I don't usually watch much TV, but here lately one of my favorite series is Charmed. And my favorite character on the show is Piper Halliwell megatalently portrayed by Holly Marie Combs. Don't get me wrong, because Prue, Phoebe and Paige are also portrayed by beautiful and megatalented performers, but Piper (Holly Marie) has stolen my heart.

Anyway, I noticed a Navbar at the bottom of the page called Chronology of the Charmed Ones and their Companions. This Navbar is located on several of the Charmed character pages. It's not really a Navbar template, though, but just a table. It's harder to edit than a real Navbar, because it doesn't have the "v-d-e" (view-discuss-edit) that comes with every true Navbar. I read somewhere that these should be converted to true Navbar templates, so I gave it shot. I completed the template in one of my sandboxes and then created the actual template on this page. Then after all that hard work, I logged out. But before I left the room, I thought I'd check the template while I'm in a logged out state. It looked very different from when I was logged in. The spacings in three of the rows were all screwed up.

I first noted this "anomaly"(?) on my User page. I've created several Userboxes, and when I'm logged out, these boxes are larger and change the look of the page. The really curious thing is that the old quasi-Navbar looks exactly the same whether I'm logged in or not. Go figure. So I'm going to ask about this at the Helpdesk to see if there is any existing or pending solution to this. It's probably related to the fact that I use IE7 to browse and to edit. And IE browsers seem to be a little quirky in several ways when it comes to editing Wikipedia. (Note the section above titled "Austria-Hungary template question".) More on this later when I hear from the more experienced editors who monitor the Helpdesk.

There was a final resolution earlier, but it was not that good due to the vertical instability of the spacing choices in a Navbox template. I eventually went back to using a table as explained below in a message to PrimeHunter's Talk page...

I realize that I called this "resolved" at the Help Desk; however, I since have learned how to embed a template within a table in order to make the Navbar easily editable (with the v-d-e at the top left). Your last note to me was:
Trying to align vertically by using multiple spaces (whether or not this is done with {{loop}}) can also be unstable, for example for readers with another font size in their browser. I think the only stable method for vertical alignment is tables with the vertically aligned elements in the same table column, but I don't know whether there is a practical way to do that for your purpose at Template:Charmed Companions. I took this to heart and discarded the Navbox Template and went back to the table. This way there is no need to use the unstable vertical alignments of the Navbox. So I've finally accomplished what I set out to do: The Navbar, Template:Charmed Companions, is more easily edited from user articles such as Charmed, and this was accomplished without jeopardizing vertical alignment stability across skins. Thank you so much for your help and guidance!

Here is a way to create links to how a page looks in different skins.
Template:Charmed Companions displayed in different skins: Chick, Classic, Cologne Blue, Modern, MonoBook, MySkin, Nostalgia, Simple, Vector.

(out) Here's an interesting note: I just tested this while logged out. The above tip from PrimeHunter even works when you are logged out. Just go to any page (remember, when logged out you're in "monobook" skin), then type the "?useskin=(name of skin)" after the URL and press ENTER. The page will then load in your browser with the skin you selected (this works, at least, in IE7).

Deletion of the old template

I haven't been contacted by the original template's creator, Olympic god, in about a week, so a {{Tfd}} has been placed at the old template page, Template:Charmedcompanions. I also placed a notice at Olympic god's talk page. The discussion, if any, will be held at this location.

  • Update. As of today an administrator, JPG-GR, has moved the template from Template:Charmedcompanions (now a Redirect page) to Template:Charmed Companions and has completely (and hopefully in error) removed all my improvements. He has included the {{Template for deletion}}, but has not started a new discussion, yet. As I said, hopefully the administrator did not mean to erase all our hard work, especially Olympic god's. Let's "keep our fingers crossed".

I'm so glad you're satisfied! It's a definite improvement to this encyclopedia. Sorry you got so much heat about it, but that's the way it goes sometimes. The "Charmed Companions" are a handful of actors who were companion, either romantically or in some "official" capacity, to the Charmed Ones during their 8-year run on the television series "Charmed" in the US. I liked the series for the most part, and I am involved in the project to improve the Wikipedia articles that are related to the show. Thank you for your interest!
