Re your remark on my talkpage

[edit]

First of all, thanks for the remark, I'll try and explain a bit. Mainly, we are writing an encyclopedia here, not a linkfarm, or an internet directory. These latter two are explained more in the external links guideline. The IP that I warned earlier was only adding external links, which we regard here as 'spamming' (I prefer the term link-pushing, as the word spam has a bit of a nasty taste). That behaviour is here frowned upon, and it goes for both commercial links and non-commercial links (some commercial links are very welcome, while some non-profit links (which includes e.g. blogspot, flickr, &c.) are simply not, depending on the content).

As you appear to have a conflict of interest, I should here now point you to our conflict of interest guideline. Adding links to your own site is therein discouraged (but it is depending on use, and how you go about it).

The proper way to go would be this: Consider what info your site offers. I saw pictures and text, which suggest that maybe you have content what you can add to articles, and where the site may be a good reference (see the reliable sources guideline, the citation guideline and footnotes guideline). On other pages it may just be good as an external link. As the site also hosts pictures, you could also consider to upload some pictures to wikipedia (if they are suitable, more information via the upload facility, link in the toolbox, left of this screen).

Another suggestion, seek contact with others who are active in the same field; you can do that e.g.:

  • via the history of a couple of pages you are interested in, see who are regular editors (ignore the editors with the 'bot' in their name), and contact one of them on the talkpage
  • post on (a couple) of talkpages of pages you have an interest in what you have to offer (maybe a slow method).
  • Find (and join) an appropriate wikiproject, that are places where people with similar interests come together:

They may be able to help you further on how your information may be of value to wikipedia (and I think it may be).

I'll remove the link from XLinkBot, hoping that this resolves the situation. If you have further questions, don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks and happy editing! --Dirk Beetstra T C 12:45, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
