Unusual Adoption Request

Hi! Im an English teacher in Toluca Mexico (west of Mexico City). My Advanced B classes will be contributing to Wikipedia as the focus of their English course for Fall 2007. I am looking for people who would like to mentor my students (who will be working in groups) as they do the following assignments: Edit and article (adding a citation), writing a stub with a citation, translating an English language article for Spanish Wikipedia and for the final project, writing a full article for English Wiki (they can expand on the stub mentioned previously). What I would like to do is put a list of "mentors/adopters" on my talk page as a kind of short cut for my students, who have limited time to get things done. The semester begings Aug 6, but the real Wikipedia work wont begin until the beginning of Sept. If you would like to add your name to my list, please go to my talk page and add it there, perhaps with a short introduction, if you like.

Thank you!

Reminder

Hola Mentors!

Im sending you this reminder because you volunteered to mentor my students in English Advanced B as they become contributing members of the Wikipedia community. We start working with Wikipedia in earnest next week. I ask you to take a look at your entry in the Mentor Table at Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Mentors

Please update the information, esp. with what your technical and informational expertise is or, if you have decided that you no longer want to participate, please remove your information from the table. Please watch the pages associated with the project. Students will contact you via your user page and as soon as my students have user pages, I will put them on the navigation bar associated with the project.

I don’t need to remind you that your job is NOT to write their assignments for them, of course. I certainly will tell my students that… and the fact that you are volunteers that don’t have to help them… so be nice. If any students misbehave (tho I don’t expect it) don’t hesistate to contact me and I will take care of it. The goal of this project is to integrate successfully into the Wikipedia community. Anyway… what I really need your help with is helping students get oriented to Wikipedia, make appropriate changes and write about appropriate topics (see Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Syllabus for assignments). I also need your technical expertise… I am only an English teacher after all! I appreciate what technology does for us but I am no technical expert!

Again, thank you for volunteering and you will hear from us again soon! Thelmadatter 19:04, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter

JoeRUBZ looking to be adopted :-)

Hello Orfen!

I'm an owner of a small Internet service Provider business and over the past few years I found myself referring to some of the fine tech articles on Wikipedia. I thought it was time to give back by contributing, so I decided to start with a small topic, yet one that was interesting to me, so that I could learn the basic skills. This past summer, my family and I were enchanted by the singing of Julienne Irwin, a very talented young lady that performed on the TV program "America's Got Talent".

When I sent her a congratulatory letter to her MySpace page, I was pleasantly surprised by her kind and friendly personal response. She genuinely seems to like people and works hard to provide an entertaining performance. People like this are few and far between and deserve support.

Soooo I decided I could help by updating her Wikipedia page, and at the same time it would provide me a learning experience.

http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Julienne_Irwin

Already existed. I'd like to make updates conform to the WikiProject Musicians standards, but I'm still scratching my head when it comes to how templates are included. I do have the draft of the rest of the text I want to add. Some of that will involve citing sources and getting permission to do so. I figure I'll take it one step at a time though.

For now, I got impatient and followed the existing format to add some content of names and songs that had been omitted, as you can see by viewing the edit history. I don't think I caused the world to end by doing this, but I would like someone looking over my shoulder before going further. In your "ad", you mentioned "music", and since you are generous enough to offer, I'm askin' ;-) Where do you suggest I go next ?? JoeRUBZ 03:46, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Orfen, Thanks so much for the help and suggestions! I've been reading the Style pages and gotten a better idea of how links work and the various options to make them more precise. I am going to approach this in pieces so that I can manage my time on this, yet never leave an incomplete page while it is in the process. I completely agree with your point about the lack of references. I found that there is already an *excellent* page for AGT which is beautifully cross referenced. I think I will restructure J/E's page so that there is an introduction section, an AGT section, a biography section, and a career section. This way, I only need to reference the AGT/Julienne_Irwin section only once off of that section's title, instead of each step of the competition, though I will need to add my sources for the songwriter names. The tool you mentioned looks great, I'll have to see if I can add the references section at the end correctly. :-) Question1: Is there a way I can mark her page so that it essentially indicates, "under construction, please pardon the dust" so that others know what's going on ? Question2: If I use the information off of a site like: http://www.azlyrics.com/ can I just cite the reference, or do I also have to contact them for permission to use that information ? Question3: When a local link is available, (eg. "Crazy" by Willie Nelson) and I format it as one, do I still need to site a reference on that one ? Again ... Thanks for your time ! —Preceding unsigned comment added by JoeRUBZ (talkcontribs) 15:46, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, I ended up answering my question #2. Instead of that link, I can just use LOC: http://www.copyright.gov/records/ so that no permission is needed. JoeRUBZ 16:58, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

New Article

Hello Orfen, this is Karina, from Thelmadatter's class. My group has already created an article about a Mexican writer called Manuel Acuña, and we would like you to check it. We want to know if the article is good or not, and we also want to know what we are missing about it. Than you, Park Lovers :D....The link for our article is: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Manuel_Acu%C3%B1a Arezvik 03:38, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
