ALT DYK for Bear Witness
First up, thanks for preparing the DYK for Bear Witness. I like your choice. I've acknowledged my colleague Dan arndt for his assistance in getting it to GA. I have also tried to place an ALT DYK but I'm not sure I got the formatting right. Could you please check that it is suitable? I don't care whether they chose your DYK or my alt one, I'm happy with either.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 01:07, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

DYK
Hey, OGJ, and thanks for your recent work at DYK!
Regarding finding articles to nominate by looking through recent GAs: it's a great idea, as many people working at GA aren't necessarily interested in also working at DYK. But do be aware that many if not most articles just don't really contain a good hook, and usually when we try to force one in all we end up with is a kind of boring hook, which usually ends up not doing what a hook is supposed to do: get readers to check out an article they otherwise wouldn't have seen.
In general when looking for DYKs to nominate, look for the hook first. Read through the article looking for something interesting or unexpected. If you don't find something that really is actually interesting to build a hook around, move on to the next GA. A good hook is one that will make people who aren't interested in a particular subject go read the article anyway. :) If you do find something interesting but can't come up with a great hook for it, open a section at WT:DYK and ask if anyone has any ideas. I just had a commenter suggest a great hook at Template:Did you know nominations/Pigs in blankets that was better than the one I'd suggested. There are people at DYK talk with lots of experience finding and creating great hooks. Valereee (talk) 12:51, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
Squatting in Albania
Hellos I see you started and then self-reverted a DYK for Squatting in Albania. I suppose you did that because you saw that the GA review needs reverting as well. If/when the article actually does get GA status, I'd be happy to collaborate on the DYK ... the factoid you picked out is a good one right? Cheers! Mujinga (talk) 13:43, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

DYK advice
Hi, @Onegreatjoke! I've noticed that you are an active reviewer of DYK nominations (and that you've reviewed some of my own, thanks for that!), so I wanted to ask how you check for plagiarism on articles? I've noticed that this is difficult for me to do, especially when the article is lengthy. Thanks, Unlimitedlead (talk) 18:40, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Unlimitedlead: Personally, I use Earwig which is this - https://copyvios.toolforge.org . It's personally helped me a lot when it comes to finding copyvios as it's specifically designed to find them. Though the main problem with earwig is that it'll sometimes register quotes as possible copyvios so you may need to review earwig. But other than that it's usually good. Onegreatjoke (talk) 19:22, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much. It’s usually been the quotes that have been getting me. Unlimitedlead (talk) 20:16, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

Please contact me next time
Hello. Thank you for nominating Symphyotrichum kentuckiense for DYK. I have seen that DYK nominations of articles that you have had no involvement with is a specialty of yours. Some would call it hat collecting. There is a place for most things on Wikipedia, and getting quality articles on the main page is one of them, so those efforts are appreciated. I would like to request that, in the future, although it's not required, please give me a courtesy contact on my talk page if you are interested in taking to DYK other articles I have recently created and are not stubs, brought to over 1500 characters prose, increased prose five-fold, or reached GA approval. It could very well have been the case that I had a nomination ready to post but you picked it up first; fortunately for me, that was not the case – yet. However, if it had been the case, simply a quick talk page note would have avoided the possibility of that happening; Wikipedia encourages self-nomination for DYKs, and S. kentuckiense had not reached the deadline. Logic says, too, that if you have had no involvement with the article prior to DYK nomination, you would not have the background to be involved in the review process. If you have background in editing plants articles or botany, or would like to focus on this, you are welcome to become involved in the Plants Project. – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 00:35, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

Re: Copyright Violations in the Execution of Majidreza Rahnavard article
Hello there - I saw that someone nominated the above article for DYK, and they were having trouble due to potential copyright violations. I left a comment on the article's talk page explaining exactly what happened.
In short, it is not a copyright violation; it it is a case of WP:MIRROR. My comment on the article goes into more detail as to why that is, with what I hope can serve as proof that I wrote the text at least an hour before Goftar News published their article directly copying the wording. Thank you, and sorry for any confusion or difficulties! Afddiary (talk) 16:37, 20 December 2022 (UTC)
