Freedom of speech and profanity

Sometimes the question is posed whether Wikipedia allows freedom of speech regarding profanity. Our primary goal is to build an encyclopedia. Freedom of expression is valued, but only to the extent that it does not get in the way of that goal. Including information about offensive material is part of Wikipedia's encyclopedic mission; being offensive is not. We have many articles about profane and sexual subjects‍—‌prick, fuck, shit, fart, and so on. Although Wikipedia is not censored, if you were to put profanities on discussion pages, a quick ban might follow. This is especially true for usernames because these show up in many places where people do not want to be bothered by profanity. Repeated off-topic comments on article talk pages also might constitute a breach of policy.

Thank you very much @Marco Chemello (Unipd)! Omppuukko (talk) 13:37, 13 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good afternoon, Outi! I tried to insert citation for my part and I am not sure about it. These references Gill, Redeker,  and Gasser are the scholars' personal websites. I had some concerns about the "title" of these webpages. When the citation is automatically created the title looks like this:
  1. "About – Urs Gasser". Medium. Retrieved 2022-04-16.
I wonder if this is fine Sashavaiss (talk) 09:10, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @Sashavaiss thanks for asking about this.
Can @Marco Chemello (Unipd) maybe help with the question?
In addition, I think that in this part there should be an additional reference to Redeker et al. 2018 academic article and not only the personal websites. Would it be possible for you @Sashavaiss with the help of @Marco Chemello (Unipd) to check this? Omppuukko (talk) 09:24, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Omppuukko@Sashavaiss Personal pages of authors are not useful and should not be linked. In general, in the body text of the article you cannot link external websites, you can link only existing Wikipedia articles. External links can be used a) in the External links final section, and b) in the footnotes, if used as a reference. Good work. Marco Chemello (Unipd) (talk) 11:19, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent @Marco Chemello (Unipd), thanks very much for clarifying this.
@Sashavaiss would it be possible for you to 1) remove the personal websites 2) add the article ( [1]https://doi.org/10.1177/1748048518757121 ) as a footnote reference like Marco suggested? That article is actually the correct reference for the entire "Movement" section (and not the personal websites). Thanks very much for your work with this. Dear @Omppuukko and @Marco Chemello (Unipd), those were the extrenal links I inserted from the original document created by Dublin students. I already removed those links and added the article you mentioned. Looking forward to the meeting today! Sashavaiss (talk) 10:46, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
