Politics and history
I see you are asking for suggestions for articles to work on. Are you by chance interested in political history? If so, you could have a go at expanding biographies for local members of parliament. Most bios related to the former Kaiapoi electorate are stubs, so they could do with some expansion. Schwede66 18:01, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to Steve Jobs (book), without good reason. They need to have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. Wikipedia has some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Also, if a page move is being discussed, consensus needs to be reached before anybody moves the page. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Your signature
Hi Ollieinc
I just spotted your signature on a talk page, and was surprised by its huge length: 617 characters of wiki markup. (see for example [2], [3], [4])
However, WP:SIGLENGTH says that signatures "with a lot of HTML/wiki markup make page editing and discussion more difficult". It's normally impossible to create a sig more than 255 characters long, so I dunno how you manage such great length (through a template perhaps), but 2½ the limit is too much. I'm sure you don't mean to be disruptrive, but unfortunately that really is disruptive.
I took a look at the code, and your signature contains a lot of redundant template-parser code. Stripping out those parser functions reduces the length to 273 characters, which is a big improvement, but still leaves you over the limit. So I simplified the HTML/CSS markup, and was left with a signature only 125 characters long.
The code is: <span style="font-family:sans-serif;color:#438fff">Ollieinc (talk)</span>
It displays exactly the same as before, and will do so under all conditions: Ollieinc (talk)
If you go Special:Preferences and paste that highlighted code into the signature box, your sig would look just the same and cause much less clutter.
Thanks! --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:13, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for picking that up @BrownHairedGirl:, but it's not actually the same. The font colour is different in what you're suggesting - see User:Ollieinc/sandbox/1. Ollieinc (talk) 03:13, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry, there was a typo in my code, which I have fixed above.
- Even so, there remains a slight difference in display, which I hadn't spotted.
- So here's a slightly more verbose version (187 characters), which does exactly what you want.
The code is: <span style="font-family:sans-serif;color:#438fff">Ollieinc</span> (<span style="font-family:sans-serif;color:#438fff;">talk</span>)
- Even if that's not exactly what you want, please do stop using the huge long version. It really is excessive. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 04:13, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
- @BrownHairedGirl: thanks. I've now updated it as above. Ollieinc (talk) 04:36, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

When should IPA be added to articles? Should it, say, be added to articles where there would be little confusion over the pronunciation of the title, e.g. CHERUB? Ollieinc (talk) 05:19, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Ollieinc. Interesting question. MOS:IPA doesn't state anywhere that IPA shouldn't be used on certain articles, and accents can render virtually any word in different ways (CHERUB would be tʃɛ'rəb in received pronunciation, but a broad Welsh accent would render it as something like tʃɛr'æb - and there's no reason that a German speaker unfamiliar with the word wouldn't assume it was çɛ'rəb). As a result, I think it's a safe bet to assume that any entry can legitimately have an IPA pronunciation guide - if someone disagrees, they can always revert and discuss with you. A bot deleted a userbox on my page with an edit description of Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Young editor userboxes. That made me worry that I have volunteered too much personal information on my userpage. Have I, and what should I remove? Ollieinc (talk) 09:51, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
- You do give away quite a lot of personal information, admittedly. It's down to you what you choose to display on your userpage, but as a rule of thumb, anything that would enable someone to work out your real name and where you live is probably a bad idea. I havn't tried to track you down - that would be creepy and weird - but I reckon a determined individual probably could, given that you've identified your first name, age, school, hometown, and place of birth.

Clojure logo / declaration of consent
Hello,
I submitted the Clojure logo and saw it had been placed on hold pending a declaration of consent. I read the referenced page but it was not clear to me what needed to be done. The logo in question is being submitted as a non-free logo that is not being licensed but being provided under fair use with the appropriate rationale, so the example statement on that page does not make sense.
This is exactly analogous to the Scala logo, another programming language that has a logo uploaded via fair use not under a free license.
I do work with the copyright holder (Rich Hickey) and am uploading this logo per his instruction, but it is not being licensed under a free license.
How should I proceed?

- Hi - I have uploaded the image and added it to the page. You can find the image at File:Clojure logo.gif. Is there any tool for automatically accepting/declining Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Redirects submissions, that edits the submission page and creates the redirect? Ollieinc (talk) 05:45, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
- Automatically? No, and such a tool would be shot down by the community. Declining WP:AFC/R
Hi. It looks like here and here you collapsed a redirect request (using afc-c) as declined, but in the request you marked it as redirect created using afc redirect. This can be confusing to new editors. See Template:Afc redirect/doc for a list of decline parameters you can use. Cheers, Mz7 (talk) 15:38, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
You shouldn't be using AWB to "clean up" typos in project space. And you definitely shouldn't be altering comments left by others (as here), particularly when those discussions have been archived and so shouldn't be changed at all. Please take more care to restrict this to article space in the future. Thanks, postdlf (talk) 14:17, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

The Heaton Claim on Bir Tawil
First off, thank you for linking me to good faith. I love Bir Tawil and would like to see it have a good article. Anyways, the talk page on the article has seemed dead for about 9 or 10 days and there had seems to be no new revelations on this man's claim to Bir Tawil. Pretty much all the articles cover is the fact that he claimed it so that his daughter could be a princess. Considering the fact that the internet has a short attention span and that there have been loads of other people to "claim it" (including me! 😀) I don't think that the governments are going to recognise this one simply because he went the extra step of putting his child's flag in the sand. Anyways, something might happen and it would blow my pants off if it does. Also, I love your wiki page! I think I'm gonna get more involved in editing Wikipedia again and I will definitely have to revamp mine in a similar manner. So peace! Tech12 (talk) 04:35, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

- There is! It is not online and it is not in english. And, it is published in several Marjeyoun Heritage Preservation Program (MHPP) publications, as well as, an online pulication from Oklahoma State Universty: http://digital.library.okstate.edu/encyclopedia/entries/m/mi007.html This "place" is very relevant with and even synonymous with the Massad name!... Christov01 (talk) 04:07, 05 August 2014

Julia Joyaux redirect
Hi, thanks for creating that redirect, but I think it's incorrect to say Julia Joyaux is a maiden name. The LOC authority record says it's a married name, and she seems to have published under it only briefly. So I think Kristeva (under some Bulgarian spelling) was the maiden name, and she reverted to using it professionally after publishing a book in 1969 as Julia Joyaux. I see her web site (kristeva.fr) has a bunch of photos credited to David Joyaux. I'm not sure what that signifies. I think "R form maiden name" should instead be another template, "R for alternative name" or "R for convenience" (I'm not sure which) or maybe something else. Any advice? 50.0.205.237 (talk) 04:28, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi 50.0, I have changed the redirect template to R from married name. Cheers - Ollieinc (talk) 04:32, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

- You can find all the redirect templates at Template:Rcats. Ollieinc (talk) 04:56, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
- Cool, thanks. I think I've figured out the situation with the name: Kristeva married Philippe Joyaux and used his surname for a while, and he then started writing as Philippe Sollers which derives from a Latin epigraph, so she went back to her original name. fr:Philippe Sollers explains the pseudonym Sollers, if you read French. 50.0.205.237 (talk) 06:04, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

The thing is, it does not sound good with having too many words of "colloquially known as". That is why I changed a bit with the first part of the article.

Is there any way to set the transculded templates, hidden categories, etc. to be hidden by default in the edit page, unlike the screenshot below, which displays them all and makes editing quite awkward? Ollieinc (talk) 09:13, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
- Not with the source editor I believe. Syntax highlight and code folding are nice features to add. (I'm in the process of figuring out where to request them.)

Harmeet Sooden Redirect
Hi Ollieinc, I recently made a request for a redirect page which you executed. Unfortunately, I misunderstood the process. What I was trying to do was to get the search term 'Harmeet Sooden' to redirect to Harmeet Singh Sooden; not to have the page Harmeet Singh Sooden moved to Harmeet Sooden. Would it be possible to revert the move and have any searches on 'Harmeet Sooden' be redirected? Apologies and many thanks, Wikimuntu (talk) 09:46, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Wikimuntu - sorry, that's my mistake. You understood the process perfectly well; it is used as you described. However, I was bold and decided to move the page to Harmeet Sooden, assuming that Singh was his middle name and therefore shouldn't be included in the article's title. Am I correct in this assumption or should I move the page back? Ollieinc (talk) 10:07, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello. News media mostly refer to him as "Harmeet Singh Sooden", but there are enough references to "Harmeet Sooden" to warrant a redirect to "Harmeet Singh Sooden", I think. Thus, I think the article should be titled "Harmeet Singh Sooden", and moved back to that. Thanks, Wikimuntu (talk) 11:48, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Scaly Adventures Edits
Hi,
I've seen your edits on the Wikipedia page "Scaly Adventures." I am an intern for Scaly Adventures and I am assigned with editing the Wikipedia page each week. I am not familiar with HTML nor have I ever edited a Wikipedia page before this one. So, I'm not sure how to fix the incorrect edits that you keep taking down. I've tried to research and learn how to correctly edit, but many of the instruction and description pages are vague and confusing. If you could help me and work with me to complete the appropriate edits, that would be immensely appreciated. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience, but I'm not making any progress on the page as you continue to take down my work.
Perhaps we could start with adding subcategories? If you could tell me exactly how to do it, I can take care of it, but I really am in need of direction here. Also, is there a way I can get the 'Orphan' issue taken down, as the Scaly Adventures page is no longer an orphan. Could the page also be re-evaluated to see if it still sounds like an advertisement?
Please let me know if you have any more suggestions for me. I would really like to learn how to do this.
Thank you in advance, Kennedichris
Kennedichris (talk) 23:20, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Kennedichris, I have added the page to the appropriate categories and taken down the orphan tag. To make the article sound less like an advertisement, try and remove any these types of words, especially puffery. Because you are affiliated with the subject of the article, make sure you don't edit with a conflict of interest. Ollieinc (talk) 00:51, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
Template:Infobox international football competition
Hi Ollieinc, I reverted your edit onTemplate:Infobox international football competition as it broke the images on a couple of dozen articles. I noticed as they all appeared overnight on Category:Articles with missing files. I think it was just ones without any size set. I wasn't sure what problem you were trying to fix, so I changed the template to use the new Module:InfoboxImage like other main infoboxes do (like Template:Infobox person). Hopefully that will deal with any variations in the usage. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 12:39, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews
Hello Ollieinc/Archives. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.
The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.
If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)
If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using . If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with .
Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.
I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Scaly Adventures Advertisement Issue
Hi Ollienic.
Thank you so much for everything you have contributed to making the Scaly Adventures page better and functional. I was wondering if perhaps you would be able to remove the "advertisement" label at the top of the page. I have read through the guidelines, and am not sure about what else to edit in order to keep the page from sounding like an advertisement. If you have any suggestions, please do not hesitate to let me know! I would like to expedite this process, while maintaining professionalism and abiding by Wikipedia's rules and regulations.
