Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated quite regularly. You can watch it if you're interested; or, you can add it directly to your user page by including {{WPMILHIST Announcements}} there.
- The project has a monthly newsletter; it will normally be delivered as a link, but several other formats are available.
There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:
- Starting some new articles? Our article structure guidelines outline some things to include.

I have tried it the following file types

- As a test (because really it should be uploaded to the Commons) I uploaded one of the images (here, i will delete it soon) . It gave me an error the first time, so I (using windows XP):
- Right clicked on the file and selected Open with Paint
- In Paint I went File, Save As, then selected .PNG from the drop down box, and changed the "&" to "and".
- Uploaded the .PNG file - it worked fine.
- As a test (because really it should be uploaded to the Commons) I uploaded one of the images (here, i will delete it soon) . It gave me an error the first time, so I (using windows XP):
- Hopefully you can do these steps to upload all of your images to Commons (the best place for public domain/free images). If not ask me to upload them for you.--Commander Keane 13:25, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Continental Army

- I like your idea about the brigades. Are you thinking about doing them for each campaign? I'm not sure how often regiments changed brigades. Even though I'm mostly into the British side I couldn't believe that not one of the Continental regiments had even a stub except for the Green Mountain Boys when I started. Campaignbox procedure
Hey. Looks like some campaignboxes you've added to various military unit boxes were done incorrectly. To show you what I mean, I've corrected one example: 1st Virginia Regiment. Don't cut-and-paste the contents of the campaignbox into an article. Instead, just use the shortcut names like I've done in the Virginia Regiment article. That way, when someone makes a change to the campaignbox itself, the change is automatically made to all of the articles with that box. --Kevin Myers | (complaint dept.) 16:57, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Now I see what you're doing, Oldwildbill. Looks like a good idea. The drawback with how you're doing it is that if article titles get added or adjusted in the original campaignbox, those adjustments won't show up in the regiment campaignboxes, and will have to be manually adjusted. For example, I've renamed Forage War -- previously it was named The Forage War, which is not how Wikipedia articles are named. So now all those links to "The Forage War" will be redirects wherever you added them to regiment articles. Not a major problem, to be sure, just a minor irritant. Maybe you'll want to create a regiment participation template instead, so that these types of adjustments will be made automatically. --Kevin Myers | (complaint dept.) 13:53, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
- Might be too much trouble, since every regiment will likely have a different set of battles listed. We'll potentially end up with more templates than articles; and they'll mostly have to be maintained by hand anyways, since each regimental template will have to be updated.
- This really isn't too different, in principle, from a simple list of battles in the article, though; and we've managed to handle those without needing to templatize them. Kirill Lokshin 15:02, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
ACW articles
Please don't add empty sections to stub articles. People who add content can add their own headers for it. (You are always welcome to add content, of course.) - Don't worry I will not step into your domain. Even though in your far superior guide that you written it states the same article sections as Wikipedia's Manual of Style. I break the stubs down into the sections so that others can fill it in (cause the blank space just beckons to be filled in) and it has helped moving stubs up into the Start and B class arena. As I stated I will not assist in improving Civil war articles since you claim ownership.--Oldwildbill 14:51, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
I am not claiming ownership and you are welcome to add meaningful content to any Wikipedia article. The article sections in my "superior guide" (Thanks!) do not include the Bibliography or External References you added to two articles. Sections
If you're going to add empty sections (something I don't really see much benefit in), please don't add sections that we don't actually want. In particular, "See also" (which should be kept empty, as its presence is a sign of weak writing), "Bibliography" (which has been obsoleted as a section title for quite some time now), and "External links" (which, in many cases, does nothing but encourage spam). In general, I don't think it's appropriate to be adding what are essentially "utility" sections without considering if the article will even need them. Kirill Lokshin 12:35, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Bill - I think you were a little premature in nominating this article for GA status. WHile it has lots of info there are some glaring problems with the article and I think in its current form it will get smoked by any reviewer. - Thankyou. I addressed the first one I saw with info already in the article, but since I don't usually make significant edits to military articles, I thought I'd let you know as well. - I was surprised how many of your edits were hitting my watchlist. The category system makes it easy for you to find all the articles you want to look at. Sorry about the abrupt first message - I found one article that had nothing but templates in the first screen, with no content visible at all until I scrolled down. The presence of references does not change the accuracy of an article, only the ease of verifying its content. Thus my preference for putting the {{unreferenced}} template at the bottom, and {{fact}} next to particular sentences or paragraphs that need it. --Scott Davis Talk 12:26, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

- My note to Tony... Thanks, Tony! The new approach is just lik old fashioned footnotes -- except that you put the information right in the text with what it supports. So, what you would do is lead with <ref>, follow with the footnote and then close with a </ref>. Below in the references section, you would put the tag <references / > All of them will display there. There's a drive here to address the concern of outsiders that anyone can say anything they want in a wiki article. This approach gives it similar feel to academic papers. I'd change them for you, but then I'd have to recuse as a reviewer. Perhaps oldwildbill can switch them all over. Bob--CTSWyneken(talk) 18:19, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Photograph of HMS Bellerophon (1786)
Your request on the Talk page for a photograph of the HMS Bellerophon of the Napoleonic era will be a hard one to fulfil. Even UK Wikipedians would have a problem as she was broken up in 1824, some two years before Wikipedia tells me the first photograph was taken. Dabbler 11:19, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Battleships
Hi there; let me say first that I am wholly aware that I do not own the articles which I write. I would however, be grateful for clarification on some tags which you have applied, specifically those indicating a need for citations and footnotes. Is it really taken for granted that an article cannot be complete without footnotes? and if references are quoted, as they are, whence the need for citations? Not arguing, just trying to learn how it's done here.--Anthony.bradbury 22:30, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi; thank you for your response re imaging and citations. I have a problem with imaging; while I am well aware that the battleship articles which I have written would be enhanced by the addition of images, I do not know where to find them. If anyone can add such images I would be delighted, and if they were to tell me how to do it I would be ecstatic.As far as citations are concerned, in the very rare instances where I have included quotes I have attributed them in the text of the article. Is this not correct? Every ship article has a reference section at the foot of the page. Does this need expanding to encompass page numbers? Or publication dates? If so, I can do that. My texts are taken largely from Parkes and Conway, with some items from Brown and a meaningful amount of now-unattributable personal knowledge. I am improving as fast as I can, and any guidance is most welcome.
Incidentally, I wish that I had never seen that Sikhism article! But I do recognise, and applaud, the Wiki policy which you remind me of relating to merciless editing. The reminder was not really necessary--Anthony.bradbury 19:35, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Peer Review
General Pedro del Valle in peer review? Good idea. You know how I enjoy writting intellectual articles (I hate writting stubs) but, here is a guy that I really want to write a good article about but, I'm unable to find more information. News
I have some great news that I want to share with you. Istarted a movement to have the names of Capt's. Manuel Rivera and Humbert Roque Versace inscribed in "El Monumento de la Recordacion" , which is a monument located in San Juan, Puerto Rico dedicated to the solidiers born in the island or of Puerto Rican descent who served in the Armed Forces and gave their lives for the United States. For some unknown reason these two names were not in the monument.
The thing is that my quest has paid off and the President of the Puerto Rican Senate invited me to attend the unveiling in Memorial Day of 2007.
