Mattythewhite

[edit]

I can authoritatively tell you he was born on the 29th of May 1979. I made a gaffe about him on my Football page on Instagram by sending a birthday post yesterday when it was clearly today unknown to me thanks to you guys & probably errors from his clubs but I was corrected by his brother. I just had a chat with him on Instagram minutes ago, & he confirmed its 29th. Do you need a birth certificate as proof? Oldnaijafootball (talk) 00:42, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed his date of birth to 29 May using a source I have found. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:13, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You made a mistake taking it down. I made those edits with 100% proof of his deeds. Unfortunately here in Nigeria, we have a poor archive of infos like articles or dailies but i'd check it out still Oldnaijafootball (talk) 17:58, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I did. I'm sure it's somewhat disappointing to see work removed and the content you added may well be entirely accurate. But Wikipedia content needs to be verifiable and you didn't include any references whatsoever. Fingers crossed you can come up with sources. :-) Robby.is.on (talk) 18:15, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Obafemi Martins

[edit]

Hello. I think perhaps you've misread what I did. I added a source for the Algeria game which verified him scoring two goals, not three. But what I did at the same time, was add in his goal in the 2005 friendly against Libya, which puts his total goals back to 18. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:26, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

CS1 error on Brown Ideye

[edit]

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Brown Ideye, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A bare URL error. References show this error when one of the URL-containing parameters cannot be paired with an associated title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 23:52, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Brown Ideye

[edit]

Hi Oldnaijafootball. I have reverted your changes to Brown Ideye's early career – a youth career stint at A J Leicester F.C., no senior appearances for Bayelsa United – for the moment because the sources in the article don't support your changes:

  • No source mentions a youth career stint at A J Leicester F.C.,
  • Ideye's profile at National-Football-Teams.com, linked in the "External links" section, states that he played for Bayelsa United in the 2006 season, scoring 6 goals in 19 appearances.

What's your source of information? Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 11:54, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I spoke with the player himself earlier this year and in his presence I made those edits upon clarification. Things are quite different here in Nigeria when it comes to accurate information and until you actually converse with the person, there are bound to be false data on their accounts. There is no record of him at Bayelsa United actually so I would suggest you revert back to the information. If in doubt with my claims, you can send a message to Brown Ideye himself via Instagram DM or Whatsapp. Oldnaijafootball (talk) 12:15, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For a long time someone like Vincent Enyeama's birth location was Kano meanwhile he was born in Aba and that information flew for years. That was probably my first edit on Wikipedia sometime in 2018. If indeed this organisation stands for accuracy and facts, a good number of data on Nigerian footballers especially will need to be re-checked. Thanks Oldnaijafootball (talk) 12:19, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply, Oldnaijafootball. It's great that you are trying get Wikipedia to be as accurate as possible. I spoke with the player himself earlier this year and in his presence I made those edits upon clarification. I'm afraid as Wikipedia editors we cannot make changes based on personal knowledge, even if we gained it through conversation with the subject. Per Wikipedia:Verifiability, "Even if you are sure something is true, it must have been previously published in a reliable source before you can add it". There is no record of him at Bayelsa United […]. National-Football-Teams.com ([1]) is considered a reliable source here, as is Worldfootball.net ([2]). you can send a message to Brown Ideye himself via Instagram DM or Whatsapp. Contacting professional footballers about this kind of thing is not something I am prepared to start doing. If Ideye is interested in accurate information about himself, he should really get otherwise reliable sources to correct their data. Robby.is.on (talk) 12:35, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For a long time someone like Vincent Enyeama's birth location was Kano meanwhile he was born in Aba […]. A quick web search suggests that sources disagree. I looked at a few sources currently used in Enyeamba's article and most don't seem to mention his birthplace while www.national-football-teams.com has Kaduna. Robby.is.on (talk) 12:58, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Kaduna record is wrong as he was born in Aba. I actually made that edit at the time off an interview I read as Enyimba are my club here in Nigeria. I have a good indepth knowledge of a number of players of that 2003-2004 generation so Kaduna was wrong. Mind you, not everyone checks up their Wikipedia unless asked or are aware of people from Nigeria who make these edits. There are certain cultural nuances that should be considered when undertaking data on Nigerian personalities. Oldnaijafootball (talk) 13:17, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have a good indepth knowledge of a number of players of that 2003-2004 generation so Kaduna was wrong. Excuse my bluntness, but I feel it is necessary as you don't seem to acknowledge Wikipedia:Verifiability, one of Wikipedia's core policies: As previously stated personal knowledge of editors is irrelevant when it comes to Wikipedia:Verifiability. Wikipedia content "is determined by previously published information rather than editors' beliefs, experiences, or previously unpublished ideas or information". Robby.is.on (talk) 13:25, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you missed the point. Its not about "my beliefs or experiences" as a lot of these information inputted about Nigerians are often not properly verified and because they are not written by Nigerians, the tendency for these information to be misleading is very high and then taken as facts. If one of Wikipedia's core policy is verifiability, why are there loopholes a Nigerian can easily identify regarding a data about his countryman? Besides a good number of the editors on Wikipedia over the years have not been Nigerians and neither do they live in the country to verify critical information. Oldnaijafootball (talk) 13:57, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
off an interview I read If you can dig that interview up, perhaps we can use it as a source. Robby.is.on (talk) 13:56, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
