Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions; however, please remember the essential rule of respecting copyrights. Edits to Wikipedia, such as your edit to the page Draft:John E. Miller (author, historian), may not contain material from copyrighted sources unless used with permission. It is almost never okay to copy extensive text out of a book or website and paste it into a Wikipedia article with little or no alteration, though you can clearly and briefly quote copyrighted text in the right circumstances. Content that does not comply with this legal rule must be removed. For more information on this, see:

If you still have questions, there is the Teahouse, or you can click here to ask a question on your talk page and someone will be along to answer it shortly. As you get started, you may find the pages below to be helpful.

I hope you enjoy editing Wikipedia! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:John E. Miller (author, historian) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.sdstate.edu/sdsu-archives-and-special-collections/john-e-miller-papers (95.1%), https://www.argusleader.com/story/news/2020/05/04/john-e-miller-sdsu-historian-laura-ingalls-wilder-expert-dies/3080382001/ (50.0%), and https://www.capjournal.com/news/john-e-miller-longtime-sdsu-historian-of-the-midwest-dies-at-75/article_032be06e-8e58-11ea-b90b-2b03d5b08d43.html (39.4%). For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Wikipedia content is free to use for any purpose, including commercial, so apart from US government sites, virtually nothing on the web can be copied here.

You have a copy already here please copy it immediately, and let me know when you have done so, because that must go too. I have some comments on the text that I'll post here in a few minutes. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:20, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Text copied and saved. Ready to delete. :(
Thanks. OkieMFA (talk) 16:39, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you try again, check your text for copyright issues with Earwig. Also

  • If you have a conflict of interest, you must disclose the nature of that COI.
  • Headings should be in sentence case
  • books should have isbn numbers
  • page ranges should be endashed –, not hyphens
  • The Pony Express, Sam Houston, The Erie Canal, The Transcontinental Railroad.— Italics?
  • You are writing for a global audience, link eg Lutheran, grade school

Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:31, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thank you. Will use Earwig.
Ouch, it hurts me to be corrected on dashes! I'm an en/emdash purist but must admit I've been hyphening page ranges for many years. Will correct that! Also sentence case (I've been newspaper-headlining them) and will add ISBNs.
Not sure I understand your italics comment on those proper nouns? Maybe I italicized them somewhere by mistake?
Re: COI. I have no conflict of interest re Dr. Miller. I have never met him, never studied with him, never exchanged emails, don't live in the same state he wrote about or where he lived. I do teach and study in an area on which he has written and was seeking a list of his works when I discovered there was no Wikipedia page for him. Then I found out he had died and thought perhaps someone should gather his info into a Wikipedia page.
Thanks for global audience reminder. We Americans tend to be a little myopic. :|
What is my next step? Do I give up on Dr. Miller's page, or may I start again and resubmit a new, carefully crafted version? OkieMFA (talk) 17:21, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi OkieMFA, thanks for your enthusiasm and for taking this in good spirits. I think it would be fine to create a new version at Draft:John E. Miller (author, historian), so long as it is done without copyright violation. Once you've got it drafted, you can drop me a line on my talk page and I'd be happy to help you with polishing it up.
