New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello No Swan So Fine,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Whetton's Buildings

Here's the other follow-up from the WikiMeet, where we chatted with Rich Farmbrough. Per the plaque in the centre of the picture, this was originally Number 3, Whetton's Buildings ("Gerrard Street Area: The Military Ground, Gerrard Street", Survey of London, vol. 33 and 34 St Anne Soho, London, pp. 384–411, 1966). For us, it has been one of our favourite Chinese restaurants for several decades as China, China and then Wan Chau Corner. It's now under new management and I'll return to see what they make of it. In the meantime, I recommend The Lido on Gerrard Street where we had dim sum before the WikiMeet.

Previously, I've written up De Hems in Macclesfield Street nearby and you said that you had worked on Lee Ho Fook, as have I. Perhaps we should organise an editathon/eatathon in Chinatown next time? Edwardx is probably up for that too as he's had dim sum with us more than once.

Andrew🐉(talk) 12:53, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Checking, I find that the new restaurant will be San Hao which sounds to be more upmarket... Andrew🐉(talk) 11:25, 19 April 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for working on the lemma to keep it. (I am somewhere else completely.) Especially nice the statement on linking Ella's music to the next generation. This maybe true, but it also says so much about the inner workings of the industry, besides the appreciation of (the tradition of) jazz as part of American pop culture as well as of each individual musician participating (good or bad). It says, cautiously stated, maybe nearly as much as the 20th album by Taylor Swift (although I expect even each single of her has a lemma), or the never ceasing output on The Beatles. Besides that, the idea of a tight encyclopaedia is totally outdated. It is not a matter of size or anything anymore, you can put it all in. If you spend some time on Commons, you can see what I mean (and read, it is always argued for keeping stuff, and even propagated). But who I am telling this./ Thanks again. MenkinAlRire 13:00, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
Thank YOU @MenkinAlRire: for such a thoughtful comment. I started that article 17 years ago (!) when The Wikipedia Library and substantial offline resources were merely a twinkle in a mechanical eye. I love Ella, my very first edit in 2005 (!) was on her Live in Berlin album, and it led me to all the nonsense I've written since. I totally agree that a massive and endlessly expanding Wiki is the way forward. I adore commons and spend too much time on there! Jazz history is massive and I've become a much better writer in recent years. I started this article after being baffled at the level of detail on minor singles by contemporary artists and unbelievably expanded this from an unreferenced line I forgot about. So much still to write! No Swan So Fine (talk) 20:30, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
@No Swan So Fine: Same for me, too. I started in 2011 with an edit on bassist Marc Johnson (I had to look it up), and shortly after I created my first lemma, the Bill Frisell discography, one of the few I ever made. I 'specialized' in lists and tables, nearly exclusively for jazz articles, because actually, it felt to hard for me to write text (part. in Englisch). But over the past years it got better, and I shifted to Early Renaissance art.
The articles on the song recordings you linked are an interesting read. I rather seldomly came across articles on music that actually speak about the music, more often the descriptions are plainly circumstantial, stating dates. Here, in both cases, I learned how significant these particular performances were for Holiday and Merman (although Holiday obviously would have rather liked to forget about it). Thank you for that. I will have a look, if I can find the recordings. I never really liked the early Holiday, but still, it is her. And Merman I didn't even know. Now I will. Thank you for that. And, yeah, there is so much still to write. MenkinAlRire 09:37, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello there, I was just wondering what you might think of an article on Richard Stone's Thatcher portrait being created, it having become the subject of controversy after being reportedly moved from its place in Downing Street. Since you created Statue of Margaret Thatcher (Grantham), another depiction of the former prime minister subject to controversy, would you agree that this particular controversy is enough to warrant an article as well? ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 18:57, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
