Sat Nov 12: WikiConference North America in NYC

Sat Nov 12: WikiConference North America in NYC
Like Wikidata Day last month, this event will be at Brooklyn Public Library by Grand Army Plaza.
WikiConference North America 2022.

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for WikiConference North America in NYC, as a local satellite event and celebration of the primarily online WikiConference 2022 (Nov 11-13). The Saturday in-person event will feature beginner workshops, keynote presentations, breakout group discussions, and lightning talks.

It is inspired by such past events as the Wikipedia Day tradition in New York City.

In keeping with the online conference's partnership this year with Mapping USA and theme of "open knowledge allies", we are highlighting OpenStreetMap NYC efforts and other local organizing around various communities of practice.

All attendees are subject to Wikimedia NYC's Code of Conduct. In addition, to participate in person you should be vaccinated and also be sure to respect others' personal space, and we may limit overall attendance size if appropriate. Brooklyn Public Library encourages the wearing of masks when indoors, and especially be mindful of those in your proximity.

9:30 am - 5:30 pm
(Brooklyn Public Library, Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn)

Notice of noticeboard discussion

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. The thread is Self-requested review: Tamzin's blocks of Volunteer Marek. Thank you. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 12:50, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

Confirming that I've seen this. I was in the middle of posting to your talkpage which I received this notification, but I'll comment in the ANI thread instead. Newyorkbrad (talk) 12:51, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

TPA

Hi, I'm just curious about TPA and why in some situations you have a problem with revoking, but in others, you seem to think it's ok. I emailed ARBCOM ages ago about my TPA revocation and apparently ARBCOM didn't think it's a big deal to revoke TPA during a discussion, and from a blocked user, especially when no disruption was happening. Sir Joseph (talk) 17:53, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

@Sir Joseph: From your block log, it looks like this happened in 2019. I wasn't on the ArbCom that year. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 17:58, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
I know, but I believe you were when I emailed ARBCOM about it and to have it removed. Sir Joseph (talk) 18:15, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
You wrote to ArbCom in May 2020 about several blocks, the last of which (with talkpage access revoked) expired in November 2019. We responded that as a matter of policy, ArbCom does not review already-expired blocks or rewrite or expunge block-logs. Whether or not that is a good policy (I can see arguments both ways), it distinguishes your situation from the one that arose today, in which the block-with-talkpage-revoked was put up for review the same day it was issued. Unblock request

About six years ago you blocked Poop on a stickpoohjtdfhhfdfggfffsfhhhffggyhhgffddsaasdfghhjkkkkd on username grounds. They returned, filed a global rename and are now DrewPhi; they have requested unblock. Are you OK with this? There was really no other reason besides the name. Daniel Case (talk) 02:46, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

@Daniel Case: I have no memory of this block, but as you indicate, it looks like I blocked just on the username and I don't see any old edits on En-WP from this account. It seems unusual that the editor would have sought a rename from that old non-serious name rather than just registered a new account, but I guess that does reflect the technically correct procedure under the blocking policy. In any event, I have no special insight on this, so please proceed as you think best. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 05:12, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
Oh come on! How could you not remember blocking a user called Poop on a stickpoohjtdfhhfdfggfffsfhhhffggyhhgffddsaasdfghhjkkkkd? EEng 18:35, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

Any thoughts...

...about running for ArbCom again? As one of our acknowledged elder statesmen, it would be nice to see yu back in the saddle again. Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:32, 16 November 2022 (UTC)d

Perhaps NYB doesn't want to die in harness. EEng 06:01, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for thinking of me. Comments like this, including from a couple of unlikely sources, are what led me to decide to run the last time I did (2019). This year, though, I've been engaged in some major non-wiki research and writing projects and I've had minimal activity on Wikipedia. I expect to become more active again in the future, preferably well outside the arbitration pages, but I don't think the community would appreciate a candidacy from someone whose participation in the project recently has been so small. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 16:15, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
Wikipedia's loss is the Great Game's gain. EEng 18:34, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
To be clear, it's not a loss of interest in Wikipedia in favor of something else, so much as a need for a change of pace and a recharge of different batteries. And it's not just Sherlockian research (which has been more along the lines of publication and Irregular history than The Game for me, at least lately), but also my Wolfean work and some legal history research. Perhaps some of my discoveries this year will wind up on Wikipedia someday—BSJ subscribers will see them first—but I can't publish them on-wiki, at least not yet, because of the primary-source and original-research policies. It's also good to have some hobbies that haven't led to anyone posting elsewhere about how much they hate me. But I disgress. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 19:05, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
In any case, best to you with all of that. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:05, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:33, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
