Welcome!

[edit]

Hi Neogcabo, and welcome to Wikipedia! I've written some advice on editing here for students in Prof. Jackson's similar classes at Longy School of Music which you might find helpful. You'll find it here. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page (User talk:Voceditenore), or place {{helpme}} here on your talk page, ask your question, and another editor will come along to help. When you leave a message here or on any other talk page, be sure to sign it by typing ~~~~ (4 tildes with no spaces between them) at the end. When you click save, the Wikipedia software will automatically convert that show your user name and your talk page (with links to them) as well as the date and time when you signed. WP:SIGN has more about all the ins and outs of that.

You might also be interested in WikiProject Classical music and WikiProject Composers. They have various guidelines for articles in this area and talk pages where you can ask advice from editors experienced in writing articles on classical music and related subjects. You'll find these guides particularly useful: WikiProject Composers: Guide to online research and WikiProject Composers: Copyright guidelines. The Teahouse

[edit]

Me again. I also wanted to let you know about Wikipedia's Teahouse. It's a place providing great support for new editors. You can ask questions (no question is too basic) and get helpful answers and advice from experienced editors. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 10:59, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your user page

[edit]

Hi Neogabo. One of your fellow students just had their user page deleted, and I'm writing to you all about how to avoid this. Your profile needs to be much more concise (at most a short paragraph about yourself) and much more closely related to what your future work here will be. I strongly recommend that you pare yours down and also include a section explicitly about what you plan to work on here. A user page consisting solely of an extensive essay-like autobiography and personal opinions where the user has made no other contributions to Wikipedia is technically contrary to Wikipedia's guidelines on user pages and tends to ring alarm bells, leading to deletions. If you need any help with this, just give me a shout. Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 06:41, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

South African Vocal Music

[edit]

Hi Neogcabo. Wikipedia has quite a lot of coverage of South African music and its various genres. Template:Genres of African popular music and Category:South African styles of music list all the ones which currently have articles, including Isicathamiya and Mbube. You'd have to make sure that your work doesn't duplicate existing articles. So read those articles carefully. It might be better to expand an existing article rather than creating a new one. For example, Mbube is still relatively short with only a "Background" section and could use a section on new genres derived from it. Several others appear to be very short and incomplete, e.g. Mirabi. Both Isicathamiya and Mbube have lists of sources and further reading which you might find helpful. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 09:42, 30 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Me again. there's also an overview article Music of South Africa, which has references, further reading, and external links which might prove useful. Note also that this article has quite a few red links in it. You might want to consider creating an article for one of those links after doing some preliminary research to see if there are sufficient sources available. User:Neogcabo/sandbox and the submission template

[edit]

Hi Neo. I'll be out most of today, but will definitely get back to you tomorrow with more suggestions. For now I've taken the liberty of removing the submission template from User:Neogcabo/sandbox. That submission process is only for drafting completely new articles. Since you will be adding that material to an existing article, just continue to work on it in your sandbox and when it's ready, cut and paste the contents into Isicathamiya. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 11:13, 5 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Neo. Me again. I have left an explanatory note to MatthewVanitas both at the top of your sandbox page and at Matthew's talk page. I've got all these pages on my watchlist and will pop in where necessary. Happy editing. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 06:58, 6 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Isicathamiya: Further sources

[edit]

I've added the links to Google books for the two references already in your sandbox + 7 more sources (and their links) which you might find useful. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 07:43, 6 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your additions to Isicathamiya

[edit]

Hi Neo! I've had look at your additions to [[Isicathamiya[]], and they're looking good. I've just done a bit of formatting of the section headings per the Wikipedia Manual of Style. Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 15:28, 12 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
