Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, Nelsonball. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Draft:Nelson Ball, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam#External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:06, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
- I chose the Nelsonball user name since this is probably the only article I will ever write for Wikipedia. I have no conflict of interest, this article is only for informational purposes. I have a big interest and knowledge in experimental Canadian poetry and since Nelson Ball is an influential poet in this genre I wanted to fill the gap. Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Nelson Ball
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Draft:Nelson Ball, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Your submission at Articles for creation: Nelson Ball (September 8)
[edit]- Nelson Ball is considered an important influence in Canadian experimental poetry. Since his death in 2019 the interest in him has continued, there is at least one new collection coming out and one translation. This in addition to a poetry prize named after him and the quite enormous number of original publications he's leaving behind. The Canadian micro press community is flourishing and Nelson Ball is considered to be one of the founders of this. Him not being represented on Wikipedia is starting to feel misrepresentative. We would argue that judging this as "not sufficiently notable" is probably due to a lack of knowledge of the Nort American poetry world. We would gladly look over the text to make sure that the language can't be interpreted as promotional, our ambition is simply informative. Nelsonball (talk) 14:40, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
- Just to explain, by declining a draft for lack of notability, the reviewer is not passing judgement on whether the subject is notable per se, but whether notability has been demonstrated. (Rejection is slightly different, but the principle is the same.) In this it is important to understand the concept of notability in the Wikipedia context: it is not the same as noteworthiness or importance or anything of that ilk; it simply means whether or not independent and reliable secondary sources have covered the subject (see WP:GNG). If you can cite multiple such sources providing significant coverage of Nelson Ball, you should be able to write an acceptable article. Without them, it will not be possible. Hope this helps, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 14:57, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
- Ok, so we have been in contact with one literary scholar (dissertation on Nelson Ball) and Nelson Ball's literary manager. They have both supplied us with several links and sources to complement our article. In other words we would like to add this information and do some rewriting on the text. How do we find the original article to be able to make these changes? 24.219.15.0 (talk) 20:55, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
- Firstly, please log into your user account when editing or messaging.
- Secondly, you need to respond to the conflict of interest query I posted earlier on this page. Your user name suggests obvious connection with Nelson Ball, and you need to clarify your relationship to him.
- Thirdly, when you say "we have been", who do you refer to? I'm only asking because Wikipedia user accounts are strictly for one individual's use. If there are more than one of you collaborating on this article, you need to set up separate accounts.
- And finally to answer your question, you can contact the administrator who deleted your draft(s) to ask whether they would be prepared to recover the content for you, but please note that this is not an automatic entitlement.
- Best, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 05:46, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- When I say "we" I mean that my wife is engaged in this article as well, even if it's mostly me writing. Does she really have to have an account as well?
- Thank you for your informative answer. Nelsonball (talk) 15:38, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. Yes, your wife should set up her own account, for the reasons given in WP:SHAREDACCOUNT — no point risking getting blocked over something trivial like this, IMO.
- You should also read WP:MULTIACCOUNT, though, which in a way is the flipside of this particular issue. While you don't want to be blocked for sharing an account, you also don't want to be blocked for covertly collaborating, aka. 'meatpuppetry'.
- It's a narrow path, sometimes, that middle of the road we must try to stay on! :) Best, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:48, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

- Hello, I have since the article was deleted received more information as to what I need to do to improve the text in order to have it published. They also informed me that there could be a possibility of retrieving the deleted article so I could add these changes. Grateful for your assistance in this. Nelsonball (talk) 15:42, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, glad to hear. Good luck with it, and if I can help at all, feel free to ping me. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:49, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you! This message was meant for JalenFolf who was the one who deleted the article. How do I get a hold of him? Or can you retrieve the article? Nelsonball (talk) 16:00, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- Oh, sorry, I jumped the gun.
- No, JalenFolf didn't delete the article; they only requested deletion. And I cannot retrieve it, as I'm not an administrator. The deleting administrator was Bbb23, you can message them via their talk page. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:09, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry to bother you again but I don't know how to find Bbb23's talk page. When I search on this page they are only mentioned once and that is when you reference them in your reply. Nelsonball (talk) 16:17, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- If you click on their name above (in my previous message), I made it a link to their user page. Once you get there, the tab next to their user page tab is 'Talk', which is their user talk page. (I'm explaining all this, because the same structure applies to every user, and you will almost certainly need to know this sooner or later.)
- ...or for now, you can just click here: User_talk:Bbb23
- Best, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:29, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you once again! I've sent a message, hopefully they will reply. Nelsonball (talk) 16:57, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
