March 2023[edit]

Your account has been indefinitely blocked from editing because of the following problems: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or web site, which is against the username policy.

You may request a change of username and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. 331dot (talk) 15:13, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without a good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Requested username:

Request reason:

I'm new to editing information on Wikipedia. I'm not receiving any compensation for editing Prof Dr Anicia Peter's page as it is my job to keep her information up to date. I was merely updating her page because her information is outdated. I fully understand that violating your policy is a serious offence. For that I apologize. It was not done intentionally. The offense will not be repeated. The contribution that I intend to make if unblocked is to remove any text that can be seen as advertising and promotion as well as remove or correct the citations. NCRST (talk) 15:35, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Closing as unresponsive. You may make a new request when you are able to respond to the comment at the bottom. 331dot (talk) 11:18, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Someone else will review your request, but if you are editing as part of your job duties, you are a paid editor, you do not need to be specifically paid for edits. 331dot (talk) 15:36, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Per the above, do you have any connection to Dr. Peter? Daniel Case (talk) 08:16, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Daniel,
Yes. Prof. Dr. Peters recently joined our organisation. She is my boss. She requested me to update her information. 105.232.86.253 (talk) 21:37, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That triggers the paid disclosure requirement, since your boss instructed you to edit. Please read WP:BOSS. 331dot (talk) 16:35, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Here is a clarification concerning paid editing. "I'm not receiving any compensation for editing Prof Dr Anicia Peter's page as it is my job to keep her information up to date" means that you are editing as part of your paid work. The fact that your pay (presumably) does not include a specific component for editing Wikipedia is irrelevant. JBW (talk) 20:13, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

With the best will in the world, there is no reasonable way of viewing your editing as "merely updating her page because her information is outdated". Almost all of us, when we start editing Wikipedia, know little or nothing about Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and I have no reason at all to doubt that you initially came to Wikipedia sincerely believing that editing to enhance your boss's reputation would be acceptable, but if you can post a string of stuff along the lines of "a visionary leader who is committed to fostering innovation and promoting research, innovation, science and the development of technology to drive economic growth and development", in all honesty believing that you were merely updating information, then I doubt that you will be able to edit in line with Wikipedia's requirement that content be written from a neutral point of view, even if you sincerely intend to do so. For that reason, I was intending to decline your unblock request, but on reflection I decided to give you another chance. If you post here a suggested version of the changes that you would like made to the article then I will be willing to consider consulting the blocking administrator about whether to unblock your account. I also suggest that you should read the guideline on conflict of interest, if you haven't already done so, and consider whether you wish to make any comment relating to it. Happy to trust your judgement on your review. 331dot (talk) 20:56, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

One step at a time. First, wait until your unblock request is considered.
If you are unblocked, then learn the process to make edit requests on the article's talk page, Talk:Anicia Peters. This is your user talk page, so suggesting edits to articles here will likely never be noticed.
You should also learn the preferred method of providing references as footnotes, inline with the article text. Help:Referencing for beginners and Help:Footnotes are two useful guides to review. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 17:03, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, Liz. Thanks for your response to my request to post proposed changes to the article. I have added made a few small changes to the article on the basis of your suggestion, but here are some comments about what you posted, some of which go some way towards explaining why I haven't incorporated more of your proposed text.

  1. First, a very minor point. Wikipedia style is to just use a person's name in the introduction, without academic titles, and subsequently just the surname; thus "Anicia Peters", not "Prof. Dr. Anicia Peters" in the first sentence, and then just "Peters".
  2. More significantly, much of your writing still reads like marketing copy. Expressions such as "developing innovative solutions" are really scarcely used anywhere other than in marketing, PR, etc, and language such as "where she played a key role", "positioned the Faculty as a leading center", "has received numerous awards and accolades", while not quite such unambiguous marketing speech, are unambiguously promotional: the sort of thing one sees in a person's CV/résumé, rather than in a neutral report from an uninvolved outsider. From your job title you evidently work in marketing, and I have found over the years that people who do so are often so accustomed to reading and writing promotional language that they can actually find it very difficult, or in some cases even impossible, to step out of that register, and write in the neutral way required for Wikipedia, even if they sincerely believe they are writing in a neutral tone. To avoid problems stemming from that, before you do any more editing, please read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, if you haven't already done so, and make sure you follow its recommendations and requirements.
  3. For some of the statements which you have made, I could not find verification in the references you gave, and searching for a couple of them on Google didn't help. For example, while I did see statements connecting Anicia Peters to the Namibia Green Hydrogen Research Institute, I didn't actually see anything saying that she was a co-founder of it. That doesn't necessarily mean that the information isn't there, but it wasn't immediately obvious. It does make things much easier if statements in the body of the text of an article have attached to them references to sources, rather than just giving a list of sources at the end.

I am willing to unblock and rename your account, but once the username is changed, if you try to log in under your old username, you will get a message telling you that the username or password is wrong, which might make you think that you have lost access to your account. You can in fact simply log in with the new username, and the same password as before, but I like to warn editors before changing the name, to avoid confusion. When you have read this message, post a message here telling me that you are ready for the name change to go ahead. JBW (talk) 21:01, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
