Hi. I've enjoyed your contributions to chess articles, both the updates and additions you've made to existing articles and the articles you have created. I have a question about Daniel Yarnton Mills. The article says that "He also represented Great Britain in all the cable matches between Great Britain and the United States (1896-1911)", but the article also says that he died in 1904. How did he participate in matches held after he died? 165.189.101.177 (talk) 21:31, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. While he was alive, he participated in all cable matches. 1896-1911 is the date of ALL cable matches. But you are right: the sentence looks strange and should be modified. --MrsHudson (talk) 03:37, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We could also use an article on the cable matches themselves. I don't think many chess players today have heard of them, but it's very interesting history. It has been requested for a while at on the project page WP:CHESS#..._to_create. 165.189.101.177 (talk) 16:35, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. --MrsHudson (talk) 01:28, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Editing List of chess books

[edit]

I notices that you recently edited List of chess books, A-L. For me, if I am logged in, that page loads extremely slowly, usually 35-40 seconds. If I am not logged in it is fast. Have you noticed that problem? Bubba73 (talk), 17:08, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have the same problem. And it only happens with the List of chess books page--MrsHudson (talk) 01:35, 22 January 2009 (UTC).[reply]
I'm working on the problem at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Some pages extremely slow if logged in, fast if not. Bubba73 (talk), 01:59, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
On My Preferences, Misc, what do you have "Threshold for stub link formatting" set to? I had 10, but when I changed it to 0, the problem went away. Bubba73 (talk), 19:38, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have 0. --MrsHudson (talk) 02:40, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
When I changed that from 10 to 0 it fixed it for me. I started a new account, and it did not have the problem until I changed it from 0 to 10. Another user also has it set to 0 and has the problem. Bubba73 (talk), 04:14, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway, it is not a big problem. --MrsHudson (talk) 05:30, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Taking that long was very frustrating to me. It happened to other pages too, such as list of chess grandmasters. Bubba73 (talk), 18:00, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I found that if it is slow, if I log off and log back on, the page comes up fast. But editing and diffs are still slow. Bubba73 (talk), 16:48, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yesterday I edited "Books" without any problem. --MrsHudson (talk) 01:21, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I edited today, and doing a diff or saving an edit was slow. Bubba73 (talk), 02:21, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Template positions

[edit]

How does this [1] (and similar) improve anything? Moving the template makes the page longer and create unhelpful white space at end of article. I'd change it back but you may have some reason that I cannot think of. SunCreator (talk) 01:48, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is a normal practice. For the sample I have taken featured articles in non-chess sections of wikipedia. --MrsHudson (talk) 01:54, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

May I suggest those samples are placing the template at random rather then for any good reason and therefore changing them to be like the random sample is really of no use (or indeed of negative use). SunCreator (talk) 01:58, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I do not see anything negative. Page longer - not a big problem, but looks much accurate. Anyway, i can stop doing it if it's so irritating. --MrsHudson (talk) 02:03, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's the white space that is created on the left side that I personally feel is unprofessional looking. However, it's no big deal either way. SunCreator (talk) 02:13, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's a matter of taste. For me, the white space is lesser "evil", than finding a template at the intersection of two sections. --MrsHudson (talk) 02:21, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, with the intersection issue I agree. So how about having it higher so that neither white space nor intersection occurs? I've changed Queen's Indian Defense to show it like that. SunCreator (talk) 02:32, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Now it looks better. But I still prefer to see the template at the end of article. In my opinion, it is more accurate. --MrsHudson (talk) 02:37, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

space before ref

[edit]

If you could give me a list of articles that have a space before <ref>, I could put it into AWB and automate the changes. Bubba73 (talk), 05:26, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wow. Nice function. Unfortunately, I am searching manually. --MrsHudson (talk) 05:31, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alekhine Variation in the Budapest Gambit

[edit]

Hi, Mrs, H. As far as I can see the cited source does not support the addition of Budapest Gambit to the collection of Alekhine Variations - can you please add one. -Philcha (talk) 15:56, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I added couple of sources.--MrsHudson (talk) 16:07, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! However you've presented them as basic web links, which is not acceptable in a Good Article. The best way to format them is using citation templates. Coding these by hand is daunting, but refTools makes it easy - see User:Philcha#Tools for info and link to refTools' "home" page. Please complete as many of the refTools form's boxes as possible, including accessdate.--Philcha (talk) 18:44, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated List of chess openings named after animals, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of chess openings named after animals. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

AfD

[edit]

I'm probably not going to take part in the List of chess openings named after animals AfD. But I think a list of openings named after people is justified - that person usually had something to do with the development or popularity of the opening/variation. A list of openings named after places is almost as justified since it is usually named after the location that it debuted or the country of the person involved. Ones named after animals seem to pretty arbitrary except for a few such as the Hedgehog. I think it is hard to justify the one about animals. Bubba73 (the argument clinic), 02:48, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, Bubba73, I understand your position, thank you. --MrsHudson (talk) 02:52, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If they go after places or people (as one said they would) I'll stand up for it. Bubba73 (the argument clinic), 03:05, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Bubba73. I think it is humiliating for us that people who do not understand chess successfully dictate their own rules. --MrsHudson (talk) 03:14, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
At the Bernard Parham and Loren Brigham Laceste pages, I've proposed that they should be submitted as AfD, but find the regulations surrounding the process rather confusing. There are doubtless other players' pages that might get the same treatment, but Parham isn't even as strong a player as I was (~2205 FIDE) and having an opening line (of doubtful value) named after him hardly constitutes a prima facie case of notability per se. Hushpuckena (talk) 08:18, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. They are not notable enough. --MrsHudson (talk) 20:22, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding to those chess articles

[edit]

I noticed Levon Grigorian, and assumed he was a brother or something. Wonder if there is enough out there about him for an article? Possibly that would need Armenian sources. Carcharoth (talk) 22:48, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, i do not know much about Levon, just that they were brothers with Karen. It seems he was a very strong player. Thanks for your contribution to chess articles. --MrsHudson (talk) 03:35, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing up Vassilios -> Vasilios for me. It was especially poor of me to not fix up the main article itself, as it's very confusing to have the article title spelled differently than the usage in the article itself. Quale (talk) 04:46, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you too, for many useful contributions to chess articles. --MrsHudson (talk) 05:39, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think you're doing a lot more than I am these days. The "Gary" -> "Garry" corrections are good too. Unfortunately I sometimes make that mistake myself, even though Kasparov's preference (and his belief that 13 is his lucky number) are pretty well known. Quale (talk) 22:56, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Quale, words of encouragement are always appreciated. --MrsHudson (talk) 06:22, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

about "Nonna Karakashyan" article

[edit]

Hello Mrs.Hudson, Thank you for adding info on Mrs. Nonna Karakashyan daughter, Narine Karakashian (they got different spelling in their documents after moving to the US). I had to undo your spelling changes Karakashyan-->Karakashian as being incorrect but added "Her last name may also be spelled as Karakashian" to reflect spelling variation at FIDE site/documents. Currently, there are 2 pages "Nonna Karakashyan" and "Nonna Karakashian". I could cancel redirection "Nonna Karakashyan" --> "Nonna Karakashian" and set "Nonna Karakashian" --> "Nonna Karakashyan" instead. Would you please take a look? I am new to Wiki as a contributor, and not sure if I did everything correctly. Please let me know if I can be of any help in articles about Armenian chessplayers. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yu783 (talkcontribs) 16:50, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Yu783. Welcome to Wikipedia. It is not allowed here to have more than one article about one and the same person. Therefore, we should create a redirect page. I think the correct title is "Nonna Karakashian" (according to FIDE). --MrsHudson (talk) 17:22, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Mrs.Hudson, like I said, I reversed your redirection; now "Nonna Karakashian" is just a pointer to "Nonna Karakashyan". So, we have 1 article only. About spelling: this is not a first time when Armenian nationals have various spelling of "-ian" and "-yan" in the documents. However, in this case correct spelling is "Karakashyan" (according to Mrs.Karakashyan's passport; you can contact her if necessary via her website or email mentioned in her FIDE card). Passport issued by government has higher legal power than certificate issued by FIDE, definitely :-) Yu783 (talk) 18:59, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The passport does not matter - the important thing is under what name a person is most recognizable (for example: Bobby Fischer, but not Robert Fischer.) If you believe that the majority of sources use the spelling "Karakashyan", then it's OK. --MrsHudson (talk) 19:25, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you.
Double-checked with Google: "Karakashyan Nonna" - 153 results, "Nonna Karakashyan" - 346 results; while "Karakashian Nonna" - 4, "Nonna Karakashian" - 2 (of these 6: 3 are from FIDE pages, 2 - introduced in Wiki just now and 1 - from some private website).Yu783 (talk) 20:14, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Shakhmaty v SSSR

[edit]

Thank you for getting the correct spelling on Shakhmaty v SSSR. I created that article and Shakhmatny Bulletin, with those spellings. Later I assumed that the spelling of the first was in error and changed it (incorrectly). Bubba73 (You talkin' to me?), 06:12, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Bubba73. --MrsHudson (talk) 06:31, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Shakhmaty v SSSR

You added the Russian spelling of Shakhmaty v SSSR. It seems to be different from what is on the magazine (photo recently added to the article). Is it correct? Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 02:05, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My spelling is the same as on the cover. :-) --MrsHudson (talk) 02:43, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK, it just looks different to me, but I don't understand the Russian alphabet. 9To me it looks like Waxuam~ and the article looks like Waxma~) Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 02:54, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist

[edit]

You likely use the Chess watchlist, but did you know there is another version that works in a different way(based on the Chess Project being tagged on the talk page) - the downside is it does not cover talk pages and that it takes you to the toolserve to see the list but otherwise it's a nice alternative and deals with situations of article renames which for the normal version depends on the Index of chess articles being up to date. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 14:39, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, SunCreator for the barnstar! Yes, I have currently 1,381 pages on my watchlist and I will also try the version you have sent. Regards, --MrsHudson (talk) 17:06, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nom for Ashot Nadanian

[edit]

Hi, MrsHudson. I'm sorry to say that IMO Ashot Nadanian is not eligible for DYK - not a 2x expansion in 5 days for a BLP article. Please see Template_talk:Did_you_know#Ashot_Nadanian. --Philcha (talk) 11:02, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Philcha. It is a pity that this interesting fact can not be used for DYK, but rules are rules. Regards, --MrsHudson (talk) 12:31, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Spacing has no agreed-upon convention

[edit]

Hi, your edit here, has resulted in my thoughts laid down here.

Without an agreed-upon convention, I really think it is an exercise in futility for editors to make changes as they see fit, then revert other editors how "they" saw fit! There needs to be a convention, and there currently is none. (And that goes as well for 0-0-0 versus O-O-O, too. [I have a particularly interesting unexpressed view on that too: I think "O-O-O" should be reserved for games prior to the 20th century, otherwise "0-0-0"! Besides being consistent w/ FIDE 0s, 0-0-0 looks "modern", whereas O-O-O looks "antique-ish" – and that's cool!])

I hope you don't take offense. Anyway, I think my point is valid: It is senseless to edit & revert, ad infinitum, without a principle to go by, only each editor's different "tastes". Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 04:08, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's a matter of taste, indeed. I prefer no space after the period in all cases (bold or simple). --MrsHudson (talk) 21:45, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I already knew that. My point was the senselessness of reverting others' tastes based on one's own taste. A Project convention is needed (that is my point). Ihardlythinkso (talk) 09:35, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You are right. --MrsHudson (talk) 13:46, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to hear that. Perhaps "someday" there can be a standard convention, ditto: 0-0-0. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 14:39, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

move/rename

[edit]

Articles that are moved/renamed that are in index of chess articles need to be changed there too. The reason is that the related changes of the Index article goes by the name listed, so if it isn't updated it will list changes to the redirect page instead of the actual article. Query (David Pritchard article title)

[edit]

Hi Mrs. Hudson! I see here you renamed David Pritchard (chess writer) → (chess player), but of course "(chess writer)" is more appropriate for the subject concerned. You mentioned in the edit sum your reason was to make more consistent with other articles, I'm not sure what you mean, I don't know the background of that, can you explain to me? And does the consistency gained override what is more appropriate for the article at hand? Thx! Ihardlythinkso (talk) 00:49, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ihardlythinkso! I meant that all chess authors here in Wiki are classified primarily as chess players. After all, a chess author is always a chess player, but chess player is not always an author. Regards, Mrs.Hudson.

rename

[edit]

When you rename an article, you should make the change at index of chess articles too. The reason is that the "changes" to that page show changes to the article with that exact name, and after a move it shows changes to the redirect page instead of the article. I did Inna Yanovska /Inna Gaponenko for you. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 13:58, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Ildar Khairullin, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Evgeny Romanov. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
