The PPT/LDT neurons are most active during wakefulness and REM.[1] Cholinergic nuclei discharge more slowly, or not at all, during non-REM sleep.[2]
- Pathologies
- Lesions along the PPT/LDT nuclei are associated with narcolepsy.[3]
- Parkinson's Disease is primarily a dopaminergic disorder, but cholinergic nuclei are depleted too. There is also degeneration in the brainstem/RAS early in the disease progression. These are consistent with findings of REM sleep disturbances in Parkinson's patients.[4]
Evaluation:
- When we first got the assignment and I was going through the training, I was already complaining to myself about the assignment. I thought I would have rather just had to write a research paper. However, then I started actually editing wiki pages. I had a lot of fun finding pages that I wanted to edit, and I felt like I was actually interacting with the community, knowing someone would read what I contributed. It's frustrating at times when something I edited is soon re-edited or even taken out. But overall, I felt this assignment was very worthwhile. I feel like it is more of a contribution instead of the typical paper that no one would read ever again. I plan to continue to edit Wiki when I can.
