Administrators' newsletter – November 2020
News and updates for administrators from the past month (October 2020).
Interface administrator changes
|
|
- Community sanctions now authorize administrators to place under indefinite semiprotection
any article on a beauty pageant, or biography of a person known as a beauty pageant contestant, which has been edited by a sockpuppet account or logged-out sockpuppet
, to be logged at WP:GS/PAGEANT.
- Community sanctions now authorize administrators to place under indefinite semiprotection
- Sysops will once again be able to view the deleted history of JS/CSS pages; this was restricted to interface administrators when that group was introduced.
- Twinkle's block module now includes the ability to note the specific case when applying a discretionary sanctions block and/or template.
- Sysops will be able to use Special:CreateLocalAccount to create a local account for a global user that is prevented from auto-creation locally (such as by a filter or range block). Administrators that are not sure if such a creation is appropriate should contact a checkuser.
- The 2020 Arbitration Committee Elections process has begun. Eligible editors will be able to nominate themselves as candidates from November 8 through November 17. The voting period will run from November 23 through December 6.
- The Anti-harassment RfC has concluded with a summary of the feedback provided.
- A reminder that
standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to post-1932 politics of the United States and closely related people.
(American Politics 2 Arbitration case).
- A reminder that

Recent changes
- You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser uses very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It could lead to downgrade attacks. Since October 29, 2020, users who use old TLS versions will not be able to connect to Wikimedia projects. A list of browser recommendations is available. All modern operating systems and browsers are always able to reach Wikimedia projects. [1]
- There is a new automatic tracking category available: Pages with non-numeric formatnum arguments. It collects pages which use the
{{formatnum}}
parser function with invalid (non-numeric) input, e.g.{{formatnum:TECHNEWS}}
. Note that{{formatnum:123,456}}
is also invalid input: as described in the documentation, the argument should be unformatted so that it can be reliably and correctly localised. The tracking category will help identify problematic usage and double-formatting. The new tracking category's name can be translated at translatewiki. [2]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from November 3. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from November 4. It will be on all wikis from November 5 (calendar).
- Administrators and stewards will be able to use a special page (Special:CreateLocalAccount) to force local account creation for a global account. This is useful when account creation is blocked for that user (by a block or a filter). [3]
- The Reply tool will be offered as an opt-in Beta Feature on most Wikipedias on November 4. This change excludes the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias, plus a few smaller Wikipedias with special circumstances. You can read the help page and the troubleshooting guide for more information. [4]
Future changes
- A discussion has been restarted about using a Unicode minus sign (− U+2212) in the output of
{{formatnum}}
when it is given a negative argument. [5] - In the future IP addresses of unregistered users will not be shown for everyone. They will get an alias instead. There will be a new user right or an opt-in function for more vandal fighters to see the IPs of unregistered users. There would be some criteria for who gets the user right or opt-in. There will also be other new tools to help handle vandalism. This is early in the process and the developers are still collecting information from the communities before they suggest solutions.

Trouted
Whack! You've been whacked with a wet trout. Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly. |
You have been trouted for: YOUR REASON HERE RJHeron (talk) 03:10, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
- RJHeron, Ow.
- WP:TROUT explains them. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 04:35, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

Deletion of Yankee Cruising Club page (draft)
I received a message that this article may be unpublished because of a possible conflict of interest. I am a member of this organization but I have made an effort to avoid "sales" or "marketing" terminology.
While I am a member, I have read the guidelines and I'm not sure why this would be an issue. This is a not-for-profit and not a commercial organization and I do not benefit personally from this listing. I added the article to let others know of the organizations existence as I believe it to be a service to the community. Can you please clarify the issues that I need to address?
Additional Question - I am new to wikipedia, I added this content to the associated talk page but am also posting it here. What is the best way to communicate with you/wiki editors. Should I delete these messages once the issues have been resolved?
Thanks for your help Petersboston (talk) 20:39, 6 November 2020 (UTC)Petersboston (talk) 20:34, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Petersboston, Do not delete messages that have been responded to. Anyway, as for your question:
- Wikipedia depends strongly on a neutral point of view, which is why the stuff for COI editors exists, and why, no matter what the organization's purpose or goal, a COI is important for the user to note. For example pretty much every active editor here counts as having a COI for the Wikipedia page (which is actually one of the longest pages on the site... not very surprising)
- There's nothing particularly wrong with the draft, but be careful about promotional language, weasel words, and puffery. Also keep in mind and double check that the organization is notable, or you'll be met with disappointment when you try and submit it and it's declined for failing WP:GNG or WP:NORG. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 20:44, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the help. To clarify, is 'We strive to be...' one of the phrases that is considered Puffery? Was that one of the issues?
- This is also still a work in progress and I hope to add additional info, perhaps it should have been created in my Sandbox first until I think it is ready for your review.
- Also, I included links to outside publications as 'proof' of notability, is that the type of info that you look for?
- Last question, is this an instance where I might use "edit request" Is that how I would ask for someone like yourself to look at the listing and make suggestions or is it a general request to all Wiki users? Would I just put that markup at the top of the page?
- Thanks again for the help Petersboston (talk) 21:09, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Petersboston, Read our info on reliable sources, and the general notability guidelines, for what counts as a good source for notability.
- Wikipedia isn't a listing for what an organization wants to say about itself, think of wikipedia as a neutral third party writing about that organization. That's why "we strive to be" is not ok, but things like "x strives to do y" does usually fall under puffery. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 21:14, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Petersboston, Also, yes, the edit request system is probably fine. Just put it at the top of the page. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 21:16, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, that helps. I'm still figuring all of this stuff out, as you can guess by my multiple edits fixing the indentation :)

RfC about items in school lists
Hi there. There's currently an RfC at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools about if only notable/referenced schools should be included in lists or not. I told the person who started it that you had removed non-notable entries from List of schools in Zimbabwe in the hope that maybe he would ask your opinion, but it appears that he decided not to. In case you feel like participating though, the more people that do the better. Thanks. --Adamant1 (talk) 23:15, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- You can see reference previews. This shows a preview of the footnote when you hover over it. This has been a beta feature. It will move out of beta and be enabled by default. There will be an option not to use it. The developers are looking for small or medium-sized wikis to be the first ones. You can let them know if your wiki is interested. [6]
- From November 16 the categories will not be sorted in order for a short time. This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the internationalisation library. They will use a script to fix the existing categories. This can take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [7][8]

Unexplained mass deletion of material from Talk:Shimer College
Why did you delete a large amount of material from Talk:Shimer College without a cogent explanation or discussion? ElKevbo (talk) 12:49, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

I just came across your deletion nomination, and you claim "Editor lies in their restore edit, check the original draft, it's not a translation". Are you sure about this? The corresponding article in German Wikipedia has been around for a long time, and it seems to be a translation (even if you can't read German, going off non-linguistic clues like numbers, pictures, and structure). Saying that another editor is lying is a serious allegation; is there something I'm missing here? Vahurzpu (talk) 04:01, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- Vahurzpu, I cannot read german, I should've phrased that better to note that it seems like it's not a direct translation in my eyes.
- I could also just be stupid, so I'll be retracting that claim. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 15:14, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- In fact, I really shouldn't have been editing yesterday as I hadn't slept the night before (don't ask) and my judgement would likely be poor.
- I'll retract the AfD, liberally apply a trout, and enjoy my weekend. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 15:16, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

Suspecting COI & undisclosed PAID
Hi, Moonythedwarf, thank you for your reply at Oshwah's talk page (here: Special:PermaLink/989742250#Suspecting COI & undisclosed PAID, how to proceed?).
The story began at WP:HELPDESK with this talk thread Special:PermanentLink/989746080#recover user name by IP user 74.87.126.98 (talk · contribs · WHOIS).
As you can see from their contributions, soon after the talk they edited pages The Naturist Society and Nude & Natural, which are within a scope of interest revealed in the WP:HD talk. The following day the IP user stopped editing and a new account CaretakerofN (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) (plus contribs at Commons) has been created to take over the task.
The CaretakerofN account name certainly could be chosen by some unconnected enthusiast of nudity and the society of naturists, but I hope you'll agree the coincidence in time is unbelievable. So I suppose the CaretakerofN account belongs to the The Naturist Society and as such it has obvious CoI, probably Paid and almost certainly Shared issues, which should be explained.
However, I do not feel fluent enough in English and in Wikipedia policies to conduct necessary investigation (and I have no access to any tools which may appear necessary during the procedure), hence my question at Oshwah's talkpage. --CiaPan (talk) 23:03, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
- CiaPan, I ended up drafting Draft:The Naturist Society again, due to it's severe lack of cites. I'll discuss this with some other editors. Paging Blablubbs. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 16:47, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi CiaPan and Moonythedwarf. My take here is that this seems like a relatively clear-cut case of COI editing. I don't see a case for sockpuppettry because the edits were sequential, not parallel, and the username – while indicative of a COI – is not in violation of our username policy. Since moony has draftified the page (a decision I disagree with since I believe AfD would've been a better option here), and given the user a {{uw-paid1}} alert, I think there's little left to do for now. If the user doesn't respond to the warning (or makes promotional edits), the warnings should be escalated and the user eventually reported to COIN – but for now, I'd just wait and observe. I hope this helps. Best, Blablubbs (talk • contribs) 17:04, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you both, Moonythedwarf and Blablubbs for taking appropriate steps. Keep healthy – and happy editing! --CiaPan (talk) 18:05, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
I have told you that I am a volunteer naturist and I am not being paid by The Naturist Society. Who do I talk to about putting the draft: The Naturist Society back out again? I have read the guidelines and it says that anyone can edit articles. I have not violated any copyrights. If you not not approve of my edits then remove then and put the draft as you call it back and leave it at that. CaretakerofN (talk) 19:06, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- CaretakerofN, Improve upon the draft and put it through WP:AFC. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 19:10, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
