Use of non-free content on Wikipedia
Hi, Mono. User:Chzz brought to my attention that you may have some lingering uncertainty about how non-free content on Wikipedia is handled, and my own evaluation suggests that there is some clean-up work that you need to do to address some outstanding copyright concerns.
For instance, on February 20th, you created the article History of Google Docs. The content you used to create it seems to have come from this Wikipedia article: [1]. While many contributors do not realize this, content on Wikipedia is not public domain, but only licensed liberally for reuse. One of the conditions of that reuse is that you must give credit. See Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia for more. Please provide proper credit for History of Google Docs. You'll also need to provide credit for Chinatown, because with this edit you copied content from Chinatown, Brooklyn and/or Chinatowns in Canada and the United States. I'm not sure where you got Google buzz, but it's obvious you got it from somewhere else on Wikipedia by the "Cite error" at your foundation. You need to credit that, too. Even though this content was all copied from within Wikipedia, it's still a copyright problem if the source isn't given. Also, if you have copied other content within Wikipedia--even if it was a long time ago--please make sure you go back and attribute it.
Meanwhile, this edit is a little alarming, too. :) Translated from what? If you've translated it from another Wikipedia, that needs crediting (directions for that still under Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia). If you've translated it from somewhere else, where?
Based on this, I wanted also to expound on this passage from our copyright policy:
Note that copyright law governs the creative expression of ideas, not the ideas or information themselves. Therefore, it is legal to read an encyclopedia article or other work, reformulate the concepts in your own words, and submit it to Wikipedia, so long as you do not follow the source too closely. (See our Copyright FAQ for more on how much reformulation may be necessary as well as the distinction between summary and abridgment.) However, it would still be unethical (but not illegal) to do so without citing the original as a reference.
Reformulating the concept in your own words requires not only using different language, but also revising the structure of your original. This is an element of copyright protection that is not as commonly encountered: creativity not only exists in language, but also in the structure and organization of ideas of a source. If you change the language but not the structure, you run the risk of creating a "derivative work". (This is one of the reasons why you can't translate something from one language into another without permission, even though you may change every single word.) Rather than switching out a few words in a sentence, we really have to rewrite them completely (which is often quite a pain in the neck, unfortunately :/).
To avoid this, we recommend writing from scratch when you begin rather than copying elements from other sources and then trying to alter them as you go. It is very hard when you do it that way to escape copyright issues. The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these problems. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism".
Please let me know if you have any questions about this or if you need more information about how to correct unattributed Wikipedia copying. I'll be watching your talk page for a time. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:30, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Opinion
Hi, that word is kind of not sexy in a title for a SP page, I think. Can't it be made explicit at the opening, instead, and the word plus colon just dropped from the title? Tony (talk) 00:59, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Article of the month – 2010 Food City 500, a recent good article
The 2010 Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee was the fifth race of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. The race began at 1 p.m. EDT on March 21, 2010. The 2010 Food City 500 was televised on Fox and broadcast on PRN radio. This race marked the last appearance of the rear wing on the Car of Tomorrow, with the spoiler returning the following race. This race also was the first of three in Carl Edwards' probation following his altercation with Brad Keselowski at the previous race at Atlanta Motor Speedway; Keselowski was sent airborne, subsequently crashing on his side door. The race had 13 different leaders, 39 lead changes and 10 cautions. The race attendance of 138,000 marked the end of a long streak of sellout seats at the track, which has a capacity of 158,000. The race had been a sellout since 1982. (More...) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

This message was delivered to request that you join the September 2010 Wikification Drive. Our goals entail clearing down to 20,000 and removing 2008 from the backlog. This is a large and good-sized chunk, and we will need extensive help to clear it. Barnstars will be awarded to participating editors. Thank you! Sign up here. We would appreciate you inviting more users, as we need as many editors as we can get.

Hi, your Userpage User:Mono/Sandbox/1 appears in this category, and two others too. Since this probably a mistake, I suggest you prevent the page from showing up there. - Thanks for the invite. I'm not sure if this would have been better if you organized it so that it would not clash with the GOCE September drive. As it appears to be modeled on the GOCE drive, having it on the same month might be confusing. In addition, I'm not sure how many people you will get as we will all be busy with our own drive. For example, having it in October would have been much better. Just IMHO. – S Masters (talk) 04:05, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

We say goodbye to the six who fell at the final hurdle. Geschichte (submissions) only just missed out on a place in the final eight. Resolute (submissions) was not far behind. Candlewicke (submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round. Gary King (submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles. Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals. Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to Stone (submissions) for these.
Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. Also, TonyTheTiger is compiling some information and statistics on the finalists here- the final eight are encouraged to add themselves to the list.
Our final eight will play it out for two months, after which we will know 2010's WikiCup winner, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. New MDB Feature
Hello! I have just added a new feature to MessageDeliveryBot. It is now possible to have the message delivered on behalf of a WikiProject instead of a specific user. The user who requested the delivery will still be visible in a comment, as well as in the welcome message given to a user if the bot is creating his talk page, however, the bot's edit summary and signature will use the WikiProjects name. To use this new feature, fill in the optional 'WikiProject Name' field when making a request (leave out the Wikipedia: namespace prefix). If this field is left blank, then your username will be used to sign requests, as the bot previously did. Happy editing!

GOCE newsletter
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
Participation report — We have 71 participants in the September drive. 95 people signed up for the July drive, and in May we had 36. Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated. Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies. Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on. This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK, and The Raptor Let's talk. |

Hey Mono - just making sure you're aware of the discussion here, in which I note that these links haven't been approved by consensus or tested yet, so they're deliberately being kept subtle for now. — Pretzels Hii! 01:46, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi. As you recently commented in the straw poll regarding the ongoing usage and trial of Pending changes, this is to notify you that there is an interim straw poll with regard to keeping the tool switched on or switching it off while improvements are worked on and due for release on November 9, 2010. Adopt-a-user reminder
Hello, I have completed a general cleanup of the adopter information page for the adopt-a-user project, located here. During my cleanup, I have removed several inactive and retired users. In order to provide interested adoptees with an easy location to find adopters, it is essential that the page be up-to-date with the latest information possible. Thus:
- If you are no longer interested in being an adopter, please remove yourself from the list.
- If you are still interested, please check the list to see if any information needs to be updated or added - especially your availability. Thank you.
- You are receiving this message because you are listed as an adopter here.

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! BLPPROD of Kevin Haslam (American football)
Hi Mono,
I have removed the BLPPROD you placed on Kevin Haslam (American football) because the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Proposed_deletion_of_biographies_of_living_people#Are_external_links_.22sources.22 indicates that an external link verifying some of the information in the article is enough to make an article ineligible for BLPPROD. In the case of Kevin Haslam, the link to his Jacksonville Jaguars page does verify some of the information in the article and is sufficient to make the article ineligible for deletion by BLPPROD. Userpage design
Hi there. You indicated that you wanted your userpage to be redesigned. I would be happy to do so, but I charge a fee for my services:
- 25 constructive mainspace edits. This means adding verifiably sourced content, not just spelling fixes, vandal reverts, that sort of thing.
or
- 15 new pages patrolled. See here for quick instructions on how to get started. The most important thing is to start at the back of the log, with the oldest pages.
or
If you would like me to design a userpage for you, please do one of the above, and leave a message on my talkpage with the relevant diffs (or a link to your patrol log), as well as any notes about colours or whatnot.→ ROUX ₪ 03:04, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Assignment answers
Ok, Mono. I should sign my posts with 4 tildes (~ ~ ~ ~) 23:48, 7 October 2010 (UTC)). I have to write down an edit summary so that people know why I edited or added that post. Also, I should do on Wiki what I would do in real life, like asking for help or not vandalizing. I should be civil so I don't get blocked(again), such as discussing whether or not I should delete another editor's additions, and also I should assume that everyone is trying to help Wiki unless there is evidence that they are vandalizing. I should be bold because we're human and we make mistakes. I should not do any original research, which means I should be using sourced facts. Finally, I should make sure that my articles merit Wiki's standards.
So how did I do? Ian (talk) 23:48, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
- You should try to do these in normal editing; just saying it won't help as much, IMHO. Airplaneman ✈ 00:06, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- Oh. Anyway, what is IMHO? (I'll add the tildes with spaces so I don't get mistaken.) Ian (talk) 01:26, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

November copy edit drive
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue. Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page. Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style. Awards and barnstars A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page. Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive! |
