Hi. I removed some of the links you put in several articles pointing to algorithm, because algorithm was already linked to from those articles. The Wikipedia:Manual of Style#"See also" section says that additional links in "see also" are not really needed. Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 04:15, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Ckrishnaveni.pdf

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Ckrishnaveni.pdf. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 17:05, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
  • Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Kris (talk) 07:24, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vijayanagara empire

[edit]

Thanks for adding some images to this page. The article is currently undergoing Peer review and we were going to get to the images in a few days. There are dozens of important temples outside Hampi, except space is a limitation.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 00:08, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I too have great pictures from my visit to Hampi, Sringeri, Melkote etc. What we need to do is put all images in a gallery on my user page and then we can choose the ones that make most sense to the section it represents. I have put in over 4 months worth of work on this page to bring a balanced view of the empire and hope to receive every possible encouragement in the coming days. This empire repreesnts a glorious epoch of South Indian history and we need to maintain the momentum. I have also created the article Vijayanagara Architecture and have been ably assisted by user:Mattisse in its copy edits. Some images can go there too. All this can happen in tandem with the FA reviews which I plan to start late next week. Important as edits are, its also important not to get into edit wars as it eventually hurts the article and South Indian history. Looking forwward to your useful contributions. thanks.Dineshkannambadi 16:10, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I recently created two FA, Chalukya dynasty and Hoysala Empire with useful help from others. The format that the Vijayanagara Empire article currently uses is turning out to be a standard format encouraged by senior reviewers I have worked with in the past.I shall look at the web link you sent me. But at the end of the day, we want to maximise inputs from scholarly books rather than web sites to get a broader picture.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 16:30, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see you are interested in making maps. Can you create a map for Vijayanagara Empire territories just the way its done on the Hoysala Empire map. Then I shall take care of the rest of the box?thanks.Dineshkannambadi 16:55, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see you are a new user. Welcome to wikipedia. One of the things I have learnt over the last 18 months on wikipedia is to see the "big picture". Sometimes people get caught in the minute details (me included). I hope you make many useful contributions.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 17:47, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I meant generally speaking. I still face these problems with newcomers on other articles. I had some problems on this article too in the past. However, I am confident from the sound of you that you will make good contributions on wikipedia in general. By the way, my wife is Telugu, so a lot of Telugu goes on at my house. Also, if you have any info on important saints from AP side during 14th-16th century who were patronised by Vijayanagara kings, please bring out that info with verifyable citations. I have put in info on Annamacharya but did not find any other info in my books which tend to focus on Telugu literature (and with good reason). I spent weeks digging up all the authors in Sanskrit/Telugu/Kannada/Tamil from the empire and would sure like to clean up the page (copyedits) Vijayanagara Empire Literature. Feel free if you have time.thanksDineshkannambadi 18:20, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
do you mean arts as in Paintings or dancing/music?. Generally so far we have been putting info on arts into social life, unless the info is so substantial that it warrants a seperate paragraph. However not too many paintings have survived. Some of the so called "vijayanagara paintings" have been retouched upon in later years (durind Tipu's time)thanks.Dineshkannambadi 19:02, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you have access to the book you mention, please feel free to add a more comprahensive list of Telugu scholars from the empire in the respective subarticle. Regarding the line

"Srinatha's brother-in-law Bammera Potana translated into Telugu Bhagavatapurana and VirabhadraVijaya"-->this info comes from Prof. K.A.N Sastri's book in have referenced. Since it is not an important aspect of the article, I will remove it, but generally citations are required to prove or disprove something.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 19:10, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for additions to Vijayanagara literature page. Just one small issue, when writing complex Indian literary or philosophical terms, signs like ^ should be avoided as it confuses people not from India. Also it is useful to give the meanings of complex words, something I have learnt of late.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 22:18, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Can you get hold of an image of the Vijayanagar palace at Chandragiri or Penukonda. I know one more palace has survived in Anegondi but I did not visit this place. A palace image would look really good on the main page or in the Architecture page.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 22:21, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The palace at Koppal looks similar, except we cant use web images like these. They have to be loaded in jpg or png format into wiki commons or as GDFL images etc. I normally scan all my images with a scanner if the photos are the old fashioned kind (if taken with SLR) or download directly from CD as jpg file. I am planning to create a page purely on Yali Columns and Balsutrades going into details for which I will have to visit Hampi again sometime. For now I have to complete the architecture page with a paragraph on secular structures. thanks.Dineshkannambadi 00:46, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good job. The person you need to contact is user:Nichalp. Also, your map may not be accurate in that it does not depict the empire at its "peak" under Devaraya II and Krishnadevaraya which is what we want to portray. Please read the sentences in main article pertaining to History section.

The empire included Gulbarga, Raichur, Bellary, much of Andhrapradesh north of Krishna river.(Bellary was always in their control and so was Uttara Kannada district which helped them with trade with the Portuguese who controlled Goa. Temporarily they also took control of Kalinga Chaul, Dabol and Konkan areas but that may be a stretch.I can send you a scanned image from my book. My map shows all areas from the intersection of Goa and Karnataka then passes thru Karnataka including Raichur and then Kondapalli in Andhra. Or you may look at the link [1].thanks.Dineshkannambadi 17:08, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The right side of the map needs to extend to the Orissa-Andhra intersection, the left side needs to be pulled up to Goa-Karnataka intersection, I think.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 17:15, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have an email set up to your user account on wiki?thanksDineshkannambadi 17:41, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Vijaynagar empire SVG map

[edit]

Hi! Cool, we have another cartographer amongst us. First things first, request you to shade the area in red with a set transparency (See Image:Hoysala Empire extent.svg for details).

Now your image is getting cropped as your image size and document size are not matching. In Inkscape, make sure your canvas is aligned to the top and left first. Make a note of the canvas size. It should be the same as the blank India map template.

Then go to File > Document Properties and make sure Fit page to selection option is selected (Inkscape 0.44) For earlier versions you have to manually set the page width to the canvas area.

Hope this solves your query. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:19, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The map is too big to be cut and paste. please give me an email ID.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 21:13, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have a good image of Tirupathi temple or Srisailam temple? I am currently loading the images into respective sections.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 22:45, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Thanks for your additions to the literature section, I truly appreciate your enthusiasm. However, a few things to note as we go along: For FA review that the article is now undergoing, the reviewers expect short summaries about each section. This is why I prefered to give details in a few lines for the most important works only. I request you to move your latest edits about works on medicine and music etc into the attached sub article for literature. As the main page becomes too bulky, reviewers start complaining. As such we expect that the article needs about 10% reduction by the end of all copy edits.I hope you understand and again, I appreciate your enthusiasm. However if one of the works you mention is of extreme importance, we can replace one of the existing Sanskrit works with the one you brought up. thanks.Dineshkannambadi 23:59, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I did not understand "messages on Irugappa".thanks.Dineshkannambadi 00:01, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is my suggestion. Choose the most important of the "secular" works you mention about in the last paragraph and describe it in 2-3 lines. This I feel is better than lumping together 5-6 works and their authors. Describing 1 work in 2-3 lines gives a better feel for the reader about these secular non religious works. You are right, its nice to have a different kind of work mentioned.

As far as the Iruguppa paintings are concerned, It probably is better as a wikilinked article than explicitly stated in the architecture or arts section. Vijayanagara empire architecture is most famous for its monuments and we should focus on that on the main page to ensure people dont get lost in details.I will take a closer look at the article you have put in the talk page later.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 00:16, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vijayanagara literature-->Looks like you are doing lots of good research here. When you are done with this, can you copyedit the page and make sure names of scholars and their works are not repeated multiple times?thanks.Dineshkannambadi 00:21, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you dont mind me giving you so many advices, but I feel this is a good learning time for you, a time when you can learn what reviewers expect and what they dont accept. Both the citations you gave for the literature info are not acceptable as one goes to a pdf article and the other to an picture (good image though). A citation, if it is a web page should meet cite-php format like those that have been used for other web references in the article. The web reference should provide author, publisher, last date of access etc apart from being directly accessable. Also blog sites are not acceptable.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 01:10, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Could you seperate the works on medicine and music for clarity.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 02:00, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tirupathi

[edit]

Hello Mlpkr, I removed the info box from Tirupathi Venkateshwara Temple as it contained hardly any information, and the image of Venkateshwara which you recently added looks nice enough without the box in my opinion. Originally there had been a photograph of the temple inside the box, but it was found not to be copyright free. If you know of a suitable image maybe the box could be replaced with extra details. Akshara

[edit]

Regarding 'akSara' I saw your message. I tried to post a reply there, but there is no such facility in the 'discussion' page. My intention of editing the post is to bring out the base word 'kSara' - 'akSara' is only a derivative. Further, the common perception 'akSara' is a + kSa - the first and last letter of the script, may not be true. The position of kSa is not at the end of script. Someone has wisely thought of this. The true significance of akSara is in philosophical terms. You may edit your post to include my view. If you consider my view is not appropriate, just ignore it - and remove it. - 13:13, 16 January 2007 User:Vgvindan.

map

[edit]

Looks good. Did any of your maps other than mine indicate Goa and south konkan. I know they conquered those areas in Devaraya II time but in Krishnadevara's time the Portuguese operated freely from Goa, though this may be a minor issue.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 21:29, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please include those other sources, especially Durga Prasad. The other existing map links dont match the svg map. May be they should not be used as reference in svg page to avoid controversies (trust me, there are no shortage of people who will complain when this article becomes FA of the day). Also, Dr. Jytosna Kamat link goes to a forbidden site. We need to make sure the images we link to inside the svg page more or less match what we show to the outside world. In that sense, the scan jpg I sent you comes close.Dineshkannambadi 21:55, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, please include page number for Suryanath Kamath referenced map.Dineshkannambadi 22:00, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

capital

[edit]

Dont bother about the other "capitals". Eventually, to meet FA standard, only Vijayanagara will be listed. The other capitals are "really not so important" from a global perspective. Because we are Indians we try to spell out every detail but the world at large does not really care. When the really interested people read the whole aricle, they will get the message. thanksDineshkannambadi 01:55, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you add a dot to the location of Vijayanagara city in the empire svg map so people dont have to go looking into the Vijayanagara page for the info. This was recommended by user:Mattisse. Thanks.Dineshkannambadi 03:11, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I personally think this may not be necessary but I have learned to look at things from the view point of a non-Indian reader who may have no clue where Vijayanagara or Karnataka is.thanks.Dineshkannambadi

I see you have done a good job here. We need to continute to work on this page and make it exemplery.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 16:29, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are the dot coordinates correct (latitude/longitude)? Also, we need to find images for saints (Purandaradasa, Kanakadasa, Annamacharya etc) and add it in the Vijayanagara Empire Literature secton. Purandaradasa image exists, but not the others. Same for Vyasatirtha etc.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 18:18, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

maps

[edit]

Good job on Astadiggajas. Can you draw a couple of maps for me. one is for Western Chalukyas and another for Rashtrakutas. I will email the accurate maps to you from Dr. Kakath's book. Its ok if you take a few days though. thanks.Dineshkannambadi 14:09, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The lead looks ok. I will send the maps over. Was a bit busy yesterday.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 18:31, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
At this point where we have multiple "supports" for FA we need to be careful what we copy edit. If you are really sure some info is redundant and can be reduced, go ahead, but watch out for tense/meaning changes as this may stall the FA of the article.Open mindedness is always welcome. thanks.Dineshkannambadi 18:42, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for the maps. If you have the time, I feel the article on Eastern Chalukyas needs more work. Since it directly concerns you (coming from AP) you may want to get hold of a nice book (Durga Prasad) and build it on the sme lines as Vijayanagara empire (Economy, Agriculture, Social life, Literature etc). user:Venu62 has put in a lot of work already on this article. He may be able to help you with sources.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 18:41, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just one thing. The location of the dot in both maps is incorrect. Rashtrakuta capitalManyakheta is in the centre of Gulbarga district. Western Chalukya capital (Basavakalyan) is in Bidar district. Please put the dot in the centre of the respective districts. Currently both maps show Manyakheta and Basavakalyan in Maharashtra, which is incorrect.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 18:50, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits to Manyakheta was incorrect. I reverted. Modern name for Manyakheta in Karnataka is Malkheda. But this should not be confused with a possible different Malkhed in Maharashtra. In fact Manyakheta is very close (50kms) to the AP border, just like Vijayanagara and farther away from Maharashtra border. But because the dot is so big compared to the scale of the map, it is hard to depict this location exactly, which is why I wanted you to put the dot in the centre of Gulbarga district. Basavakalyan, birth place of Basaveswara is in Bidar district and the dot shows it is in Bidar. Not sure why you put it in Maharashtra. Because of the pointed geography of Karnataka map in that area it is is close to the borders of both Maharahtra and AP. The region is prehaps no more than 50kms wide over all.Thanks.Dineshkannambadi 19:22, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, Manyakheta is on the left extreme of Sedam Taluk, bordering KA-AP.Dineshkannambadi 19:24, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I dont mean to be picky, but I think the western Chalukya map needs a bit of adjust, on the eastern side, in AP. Apart from coastal AP which was held by the Cholas, the rest of AP (ruled by feudatory Kakatiya untill ~1150) was under Kalyani Chalukyas. You may want to look at the map I sent you again just in case. Also please make sure the south portion is also accurate.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 19:33, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
maps look wonderful.Thanks. Another idea that came to mind. Many people dont know this but there were some scholars from the medieval times who wrote works in Kannada and Telugu.

I have a wonderful book on Kannada literature (Histroy of Kannada literature- Narasimhacharya). I will furnish there names. Then we could jointly build articles for them and indicate their Telugu/KIanndaa works. How does that sound.?Dineshkannambadi 20:26, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. We need a good book for that , I mean a book specifically on them to build content and others like "Histroy of South India-KAN Sastri (which I have) to round it off.Dineshkannambadi 20:46, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,I got the image from net

[edit]

Actually in net there was a website which was doing research about telugu script. those images were released by Andhra Pradesh govt, longtime back. In that website i got these images. u can refer the references and external links for more information. bye, take care.Bsskchaitanya 05:33, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If I come across any useful info, I shall add it. By the way, Somesvara II was not son of Vikramaditya VI, but elder brother. Vikramaditya VI overthrew him to take control of the empire. One more thing, both the books I have read indicate that Western Chalukyas took control of whole of Vengi (coastal Andhra) in 1118 CE when Vikramaditya VI defeated Kulotunga Chola, but Dr. Suryanath Kamath does not indicate that in his map (the one you drew for me). Perhaps historians only account for "core areas" fully under control of an empire for long periods. We know too well the Western chalukyas and Cholas fought to the death over Vengi and perhaps neither controlled it for long enough. thanks.Dineshkannambadi 20:43, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A picture says a thousand words. Try to get hold of images of Palampet Ramappa and Warangal 1000 piller temples (Kakatiya). Without images, you really cant make a FA article. Unfortunately, though I visited AP some 10 times when I had more time (1995-2000), we never went north of Hyd. In those days I was focussing more on Wildlife photography in Srisailam Tiger Reserve etc. The Chodas built some fine temples in Nellore area. look up for a book such as "Inscriptions of the Minor Chalukya Dynasties of Andhra Pradesh/Kolluru Suryanarayana". If there is a good lib near you, try finding it there. Without books, Its really not possible to prepare detailed articles.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 21:03, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have had to replace your Lepakshi images with some of my own. A reviewer complained there is copyright violoation with the image. Seems it came originally from "flickr" or somewhere.Dineshkannambadi 03:06, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

not removed

[edit]

Hi Mlpkr, I did't remove any infoboxes. I added the film infobox as part of the WP Film's camplain for adding infoboxes to films. Here is my edit: [2]. If you have something else in mind, please let me know. Hoverfish Talk 10:46, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean the WP India templates in the Talk page, they are still there and if you want you can put them over the WP Film templates, as I just did in the article you mentioned. These additional templates come in all film articles. Hoverfish Talk 11:00, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On uploading images for films: In IMDB the images are too small, here is an example: [3], so what I do is I check first in AMG, same example: [4], where the images are the right size but not always the same and download them. Other sites are also good except if they mention you need a special permission to use it. Amazon is fine too. Then I upload them in Wikipedia like this: I write in the edit summary: Movie poster (or DVD cover, or VHS cover) for use in the film article only "(Name of article)". Source: (here I copy the full address of where I downloaded from), example: http//:allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=1:45588/. Then I click in the box under the summary and select either "movie poster" or "DVD cover" or "Video cover". If you don't do this, the image will get deleted soon. Then I press "upload" and that's all. If you can't find anything in the internet and you have somewhere to copy it, make sure you state exactly from where you scanned it and select in the box one of the three options I said (and not self-made image). I hope this helps. Enjoy your edits and feel free to ask me anything you need any time. Hoverfish Talk 12:06, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the barnstar. yes, I sure hope to work on Kakatiya article someday. Your idea of "sources of Vijayanagara Empire" by Krishnaswamy Iyengar is good but more as a sub-article attached to the main article. thanks.Dineshkannambadi 13:42, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see you are putting an effort here to improve the page. Please consider commenting out the "landscape" image that really spoils the page. I know you did not put it here.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 19:32, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article needs citations badly for the entire top section (Theories of Telugu Origin/ Vidyaranya) for correct documentation. I have added citations and will add more in the correct format for the lower section for which I have books to refer from (Kannada origin). I dont have the book by Durga Prasad or N. Venkataramanayya to take care of the Telugu origin section. Can you do the needful here. This article should have citations just as in the main Vijayanagara Empire article and in the same format.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 21:13, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was not planning on making it FA. However, we should make sure that all subarticles attached to a FA main article (Vijayanagara Empire) are up-to-date. Same goes for Vijayanagara Architecture which is surely on my radar for future FA. Take your time.ThanksDineshkannambadi 16:57, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi. I intend to bring this to FAC next. Whenever you have time could you please draw a map for me? The current map in the article you drew for me is from the early part of the Empire. During a later peak time, they captured regions in the Gangetic plains and I have a map for this from John Keay-History of India.I can scan and include it in an email. Sorry to be a bother.Dineshkannambadi 14:25, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Can I take you up on your earlier offer about drawing a few maps for me. The maps that were earlier drawn by another user (for me) has sort of come under srcutiny as it clearly does not show Manyakheta and includes other maps superimposed on it. The maps you drew for Vijayanagara Empire and Western Chalukyas empire were very clear. I can email you some scanned pages and indicate what exactly needs to be done. Can you help here?Dineshkannambadi 17:52, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The areas "with" Horizontal and vertical striped regions denote the Ganga territory.Dineshkannambadi 00:37, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Chalukya map looks great. Just one small comment. On the south eastern side, the territory should come a bit closer to Kanchi, meaning cover a bit more of south eastern Andhra Pradesh.Dineshkannambadi 00:41, 27 May 2007 (UTC) On second thoughts, I think your Chalukya map is fine. Just leave it as is. Thanks a lot.Dineshkannambadi 00:43, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the .svf file summary section, you may want to correct the statement "This empire is also known as Eastern Chalukyas" for historical reasons to avoid any future edit conflict issues. A province of this empire comprising of Andhra region became the "Eastern Chalukyas" in the years following the death of Pulakesi II.Dineshkannambadi 00:57, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I made the correction, without realising I dont have a log in for Wikipedia commons, so the edit became anon. Sorry about that. Please revert it and remove the statement yourself. Sorry about the extra work.Dineshkannambadi 05:31, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Relations

[edit]

The Western Chalukya (Later Chalukya or Kalyani Chalukya) map you drew for me in January is the Chalukya dynasty of 10-12th century.

The Badami Chalukyas are from 6th-8th century and are said to be the ancestors of the Western Chalukyas. Some historians call the Badami Chalukyas; Early Chalukyas or Early Western Chalukyas.

The Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi are from the same family line as Badami Chalukyas and were sent to govern Vengi region during the time of Pulakesi II. After the death of Pulakesi II, the Eastern (Vengi) Chalukyas became independent on and off (during 7th-11th century) finally becoming the Chalukya-Cholas by marraige. They are known to be distant cousins of the Western(later/Kalyani) Chalukyas of Karnataka. Hope this clears up any confusion. I will try to find a map for Eastern Chalukyas (Vengi) to complete the picture.Dineshkannambadi 05:19, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi . Sorry for all the confusion. Both the horizontal and vertical stripes forms the Ganga kingdom and should be included (not the unstriped region). The easy way to resolve this confusion is for you to use the "Badami Chalukya" map I sent. It has the Ganga territory inside it. It also has the Kadamba territory inside it.Dineshkannambadi 09:04, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just one small issue with the Ganga map. Please name the file as "Western Ganga Dynasty" or "Western Ganga" to differentiate from "Eastern Ganga"s of Kalinga.Dineshkannambadi 12:55, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I too prefer a uniform map. The Hoysala map does not indicate the capital Halebidu and the color could be what you have used. regarding the India locater map, I had requested for a map that shows the state boundries in the background the way your maps do, but there is no concensus right now on this. Please bring it up with the group of cartographers in the link I sent you and ping me and I shall comment.thanksDineshkannambadi 02:45, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Somenath Biswas

[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Somenath Biswas, by Wikipedical (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Somenath Biswas seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Somenath Biswas, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 12:24, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[edit]

Vandals are destroying articles related to Andhra Pradesh, Telugu language, Telugu script and many articles related to Telugu history. These people, about eight, have ganged up and are helping each other to prevent unbiased contributions. The history of South India and even that of the whole of India is being painted as that belonged to a linguistic group. History is being re-written on the basis of a couple of books written by parchial and localized historians and a couple of websites devoted to regional agenda and chauvantic tendencies. A perusal of their contributions and citations will make my point obvious. I appeal to you to regularly visit Telugu and Andhra-related articles and prevent vandalism by these mischief makers.Kumarrao 10:12, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. How are you. I read the above message and wanted to leave a word. I feel you are a good wikipedian, with the right attitude. You worked well with me on Vijayanagara Empire which became a FA and helped me with many other articles for which I am thankful. Unfortunately ever since this user:Kumarrao appeared on the scene, the peace that existed between Kannadigas and Telugus has been stressed and tested. His pal user:Altruism who helps in his edit warring has been blocked on numerous occassions. The edit wars have now spread to many articles (though not Vijayanagara Empire), pulling me also into the fray unfortunately. It is best you dont encourage these two users less you hurt your reputation in the process and waste your valuable time. Good luck.:) Dineshkannambadi 18:28, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--Be wary of this guy who is acting innocent. I recently got into Wikipedia. I have been going through many articles on Andhra. Many are in a very bad shape. I also read Karnataka articles. I was amazed to see totally different versions of history other than what we learnt in college and university. I got a message from Kumarrao and started carefully looking at the citations in Karnataka articles. There is undue dependence on two or three books written by Karnataka historians. I saw Kumarrao had a point. I was also surprised to see that Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas and Vijayanagar kings were Kannada guys. The history books I read gave me a different picture. Articles like 'The great karnataka expansion' betray ather parochial attitude. I never knew kannada people ruled the whole of India. There is an undercurrent of playing down the role of other people and their history. As a Telugu person you can detect it in 'Vijayanagar empire', 'Origin of vijayanagar empire' and respective talk pages. You can analyze the attitude of a person by his tone and demeanor in these talk pages. Yes, Altruism and Kumarrao seemed to be latest players like me but their contributions and their defence looked like protecting one's own honour by citing and sticking to the citations they could get. The spats they faced from certain persons in an organied manner are highly suspect. You must get deep into these aticles to understand some whom you helped in good faith. Can you please organize Telugu and Andhra articles with good and relevant citations? I wish to do it whenever I find time. Tejam 19:38, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

---Please see the instant message sent to me by User:Dineshkannambadi :

I read your nonsense on his talk page about Kannada guys trying to propagate false history. Its clear that your schooling may have been insufficient or you may not have been prescribed the correct syllabus by your university. As such I am not surprised. Most guys who come to wikipedia with their college text books in hand, talk like you. Try to go one level higher and read real history books by real historians whose content is not edited by the state government officials, and you will see real history there. You can cough all you want, but you cant disprove any of those articles you are cribbing about. So before you fall for Kumarrao pleadings and make a fool of yourself, I suggest you carefully study wiki rules and regulations, or you may be in the same spot as he is, pleading for help from every innocent Telugu speaker on wikipedia. Kumarrao is not first troll to come here with his agendas, nor will the be the last

I do not even wish to reply to such an uncouth person. I wonder how Kumarrao & Altruism feel about this guy. Now, I leave it to you to form your own opinion about this man, who happens to be a software engineer in US (citizen!) and contributing articles on Indian history. I regret to bother you. Tejam 20:06, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just for the information of users who may not be aware of the reality, User:Tejam and User:Kumarrao involved in this discussion are sockpuppets which can be seen in the user page of User:Tejam who has since been blocked indefinitely -- ¿Amar៛Talk to me/My edits11:41, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--I have nothing to do with User:Tejam. Just because our interests are common and inputs made in various articles are similar, one cannot conclude like this. Is it highly unjust. In fact, I made complaints of sockpuppetry against a group of five users earlier and Wiki administrators did not investigate it, let alone take action. The fact that these users acted in unison to block Tejam and brand me as his/her accomplice itself betrays their intentions and misuse of Wiki.Kumarrao 12:39, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That your IPs have been proved to be sockpuppets and having a similar edit history and the fact that both of you sometimes start your edits with ''--'' as in this discussion above are dead give-aways. Please stop pretending -- ¿Amar៛Talk to me/My edits05:40, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That is ridiculous. 1). Multiple users in an institution may use the same IP addresss, 2). It may be a sheer coincidence that two persons with similar interests exist in the same institution(obvious in this case), 3) Tejam has in fact responded to my appeal to protect Telugu articles, and 4) Pointing out "--" as a giveaway is a petty allegation. I, as well as Tejam are relatively new to Wiki. It is unfortunate my appeals to the administrators were in vain. Kumarrao 14:19, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some tips to help you out!

[edit]

Hi Mlpkr, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)

First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.

Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: user:Mlpkr/Sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.

For your article, the next thing you want to do is start collecting as much information as you can about it. Google searches (particularly in Books and Scholar) will be your best friend for this! Once you've found the information, the next most important thing is to start writing up each fact in your own words (very important, this), and make a note at the same time of exactly where that information came from. Build in the references as you go along; I'm going to copy in, down below this, a whole heap of help on doing references, which was produced by one of our best teachers (Chzz).

Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between <ref></ref> tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type {{reflist}} on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.

Hopefully this will give you a good start and make life easier for you.

One last thing to keep as a motto: "It's better to write one good, well-referenced, nicely-presented article than it is to create fifty unreferenced one-line stubs!" Pesky (talkstalk!) 09:13, 30 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How references work

[edit]

Simple references

[edit]

These require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References ==
{{reflist}}

(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Mlpkr/reftest and try it out.

Named references

[edit]
Chzz was born in 1837. <ref name=MyBook>
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref>

Chzz lives in Footown.<ref name=MyBook/>

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Citation templates

[edit]

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation
 | last = Smith
 | first = John
 | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century
 | publication-date = 2001
 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]]
 | page = 125
 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4
}}
</ref>

Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.

For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.

Here's a little bit of magic which can save you an awful lot of time and effort!

[edit]

You might want to consider using this tool - (tools:~dispenser/cgi-bin/webreflinks.py) - it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script on Special:MyPage/common.js, or or Special:MyPage/vector.js, then paste the bare url (without [...] brackets) between your <ref></ref> tabs, and you'll find a clickable link called Reflinks in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). Then click that tool. It does all the rest of the work (provided that you remember to save the page! It doesn't work for everything (particularly often not for pdf documents), but for pretty much anything ending in "htm" or "html" (and with a title) it will do really, really well all by itself. For those it can;t do by itself, it gives you a pull-down (or up) menu of templates to choose from, which you can then fill in manually. Often the problem is "No title found" - sometimes the title is obvious (especially if it's a pdf), bit, if not, just open the page yourself and choose soemthing appropriate if there's not already a clear title there. WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

[edit]

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Madhavi (actress), you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Narasimha Raju and Deepa (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. Regarding sources

[edit]

Hi,

First let me congratulate you on your Allur page and its references which i liked very much. I am trying to create a similar page for my mandal Cherukupalli in Guntur district. However i am facing dearth of historical info for citations.

I visited the works suggested by you in further reading. But most of them are snippet views. Can you suggest any way to get info from them.

I heard AP state archives have kaifiyats (histories) of various villages. It metions 4 volumes on guntur district villages. However I am not sure how to get them. Can you help me in this regard.

I would be very much greatful if you could visit the wiki page of Cherukupalli mandal and suggest further improvements.

Dear Sir, This is to inform you that the map of India("https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vijayanagara-empire-map.svg#/media/File:Vijayanagara-empire-map.svg") shown on this link("https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Vijayanagara_Empire") is grossly incorrect, as it shows two states of India, Jammu and Kashmir and Arunanchal Pradesh as disputed territories(shaded),which is not the case in reality. I therefore urge you to make the necessary correction and upload the correct map as soon as possible to keep up the user confidence in Wikipedia.

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:23, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
