Maria Cristina “Marita” Perceval has been the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Argentina to the United Nations since September 2012. Amb. Perceval’s mandate as the Head of the Mission of Argentina is focused mainly on multilateralism, peaceful settlement of international disputes, in line with diplomatic tradition of our country.
As stated by President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Argentina works at this stage to consolidate lasting peace, with solid foundations on truth, justice, and equality. In the Security Council, this mandate translates into a clear agenda: the support of democracy as an element of stability; the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide; the collection and coordination of concerns by countries of the Latin American and Caribbean Group; the promotion of multilateralism; support the improvement of peacekeeping operations; improvement of the UN sanctions´ system in order to make it more effectiveness; and increase the participation of women at all levels of the decision-making process in conflict prevention, conflict management, settlements and resolution, and peace processes.

She was the first woman to head such Committee, from where she pushed for the new system of Military Justice-currently in use-, annulment of “secretive” laws and the implementation of regional measures in the framework of defence.
Perceval focused on the strengthening of democracy and democratic institutions; promotion and defense of civil, political, social, cultural, and economic human rights. She authored key Acts for human security, as the “Regulación de la Tenencia de Armas”- regulations on gun possession- (2002) and “Plan de Desarme”- action plan on disarmament for light guns and weapons- (2006). Perceval authored groundbreaking Acts to put an end to violence against women and on gender violence, among them “Prevention and punishment of Human Trafficking” (2008) and “Prevention and punishment of violence against women” (2009).
