Update on courses and ambassador needs
[edit]Hello, Ambassadors!
I wanted to give you one last update on where we are this term, before my role as Online Facilitator wraps up at the end of this week. Already, there are over 800 students in U.S. classes who have signed up on course pages this term. About 40 classes are active, and we're expecting that many more again once all the classes are up and running.
On a personal note, it's been a huge honor to work with so many great Wikipedians over the last 15 months. Thanks so much to everyone who jumped in and decided to give the ambassador concept a try, and double thanks those of you who were involved early on. Your ideas and insights and enthusiasm have been the foundation of the program, and they will be the keys the future of the program.

Michael Moore
[edit]Please go to Talk:Michael Moore to discuss the changes you want to make. You may want to present the changes one at a time rather than all at once, or at least split up the changes across multiple sections. You can't just try to force new info in by edit warring. Now, maybe what you want to add should be in the article--I really have no idea, nor am I going to investigate. Yes, I understand that GlassTwiceAsBig is also edit warring, and I'll have a chat with them as well. Qwyrxian (talk) 00:05, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
Hi Mike, I came here from the BLP noticeboard. With regard to your cites, I invite you to take a look at what I have done on an article that I rewrote here: Albrecht Kossel. This cite style enables you to start a new template standard without disrupting the article. The only disruption you have will be moving the cites down to the refs section and slapping them in the template. Once you get a system down, this can go pretty fast. Regards--Jarhed (talk) 22:57, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
- I completely understand how a person can get sucked into working on a big controversial article. If I never see the Sarah Palin article again it will be too soon. Yes sir, I did serve, and I call myself Jarhed as a personal joke about some of the pretentions some people hold about this place. Power, I have x thousand edits on WP, I AM GOD!!! SARK
[edit]Hello, Mike. I was just looking at the SARK article. Reference #2, (Covert, Pat. "Strike Force!" American Handgunner, January 2000), doesn't mention helicopter accidents, Marines, sailors or SARKs. So, it looks like it's in the wrong place. Same situation with the Emerson BLP. Good work on those articles! --Kenatipo speak! 00:41, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Re: Conan article
[edit]Thanks, Mike. I would like to take up the offer. Could you email me the print articles about his swords for the film (I think I would have to reply back to have us know each other email's address for attachments)? Thank you. Jappalang (talk) 00:55, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hey, Mike. The Medieval Hero On Screen is already used as a source. Just wondering, do you have a personal picture of Samson at work (forging a sword) that you can release as "free"? Jappalang (talk) 23:05, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
Hello Mike. First, I would like to thank you for reviewing Death of Osama bin Laden for a good article. Have a quick question about your comment. I've searched through the references, do you mean blogs like this, this, and this? Thank you again. -- Luke (Talk) 02:31, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Blade steels
[edit]Hi Mike;
That was your article, correct? I found it quite informative. I did take a metallurgy class back in college, and you hit the high points quite well as far as I can tell. Right now, I am taking up shaving with a straight razor.. probably because I am crazy.. and was trying to find out what the best blades were made of and who the manufacturers were. The only two coments I have are that stainless steels are prevalent in pocket knives these days, and finding a good high carbon " Clean " steel is getting harder every day, Schrade is still in the game I believe. I have found that the carbon steels take a finer edge, hold it well and are often much easier to sharpen to an extremely sharp condition... one reservation I had is that nickle is not used to harden.. it is more for corrosion resistance. It is quite soft, not too much harder than copper. Also, I believe the inclusion of nickle in the lower end stainless steels is the primary culprit in forming a " Wire edge " when sharpening this type of steel. So I avoid it. Few knves out there I really like these days, I have a particular favorite, it is a Klein Tools folding knife with a black and gray rubbery handle. Probably Zytell or something. The steel is mediocre at best, but the weight is next to nothing, and it won't chew a hole in my jeans. I have decided to cut the blade off near the hinge and tig weld a high carbon replacement blade to finally get a knife I will really like... I really enjoyed your article and found it helpful. Thanks! Mark

[edit]Thank you so much for reviewing this article. I will certainly review an article at GAN. If you can, could you please take a look at Thor (film), another film I nominated? --TriiipleThreat (talk) 20:17, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
- I just removed/replaced some of the refs with more reliable sources. Most of the remaining blogs are either as you pointed out published by reliable sources, have interviews with audio/video components for verifiability or cite reliable sources themselves as the source of their information (in cases of link rot). I hope this is enough to pass GAN, I will definitely look to see if I can do any more before sending either articles to FAN. Thank you.--TriiipleThreat (talk) 15:23, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks again. I'll continue improvements to these articles and review other GANs.--TriiipleThreat (talk) 17:30, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you for your support. I do not trust the majority of information on this "character," especially as it is primarily sourced (even things regarding third party claims about the subject are sourced with primary sources!)! I have searched for reliable, third party sources about this character, but haven't been able to find one. The article, for the most part, I believe, is not up to Wikipolicy. And, the subject's books, even based on their covers (shouldn't judge a book by its cover?) look like the most dubious sources imaginable!
SEALs .22
[edit]Hi Mike, we had an edit conflict trying to supply a ref. I was about to change it to past tense and leave:
- US Future Combat & Weapon Systems Handbook. International Business Publications, 2009. p. 283.
...which now lists this as obsolete. I'll leave it up to you because I'm ambivalent about it. :)
⋙–Berean–Hunter—► 01:29, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, your edit is fine. Good luck with getting one on sale. You could always get one from AWC (MkIII version); They talk about its use here. I've had mine several years now...it is pictured here...my target MkII is in the section above that and it weighs a whole lot more. This scene has an accurate sound profile although it is a different weapon. No need to use subsonics.

Sid Birt Dagger Image
[edit]Hi Mike. Dbachmann doesn't seem to like your Sid Birt dagger photo in the Dagger article; I restored it and asked him to take it to the discussion page to resolve any issues he has with the image. From my point of view the article needs a photo of a 'true' dagger at the forefront of the article, and the image shouldn't have been removed without suggesting a better alternative.Dellant (talk) 14:41, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Changes to Naja nigricollis
[edit]I changed some stuff in the article. I put "Habitat, behavior, and ecology" together. I changed and added some more information in the "Venom" section. That section was factually a mess. It turns out that this cobra carries primarily hemotoxins and cytotoxins in its venom, while postsynaptic neurotoxins make up only a small portion of its venom (similar to Naja sputatrix, which is a page I just created). Bastian (talk) 18:00, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah it is looking better now. I've been looking into the reproduction of this particular species, but there isn't much on it. I've looked at different sources including Engelmann & Obst, Ernst and Zug, Mattison, Carruthers, Branch, Marais, and Spawls. I think we would have to sort of generalize the "Reproduction" section. We'll look at other similar African species such as Naja pallida, Naja mossambica, or even Naja melanoleuca to get an idea on the mating season, gestation, nesting, number of eggs, etc. Bastian (talk) 22:47, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
It looks like we don't have a picture of Naja nigricollis anymore. This Martin H. dude is a real fill in the blanks! He pisses me right off. You know how many pictures he has deleted. Pictures which he doesn't even give a chance. I told him I had permission from the Flickr owner, but he's just so...anal! Bastian (talk) 01:34, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'll work on a map of Naja nigricollis' range. Off topic, I just nominated Tiger for featured article status. I think it'll make it. It's better than the Lion article and that's a FA. Bastian (talk) 04:14, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
Hey, I found a great picture of Naja nigricollis right here. It's some form of Wiki, but it's not Wikipedia. I also got some reproduction information from there. Check it out and see if you can get that picture here. Bastian (talk) 20:39, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
I uploaded the picture and I hope it sticks. I also added a "Reproduction" section and a map of its range in Africa. I think the article is done. Bastian (talk) 21:21, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

What else do you think the article needs? Pictures are very difficult to come by, but I am going to contact a few Flickr members to give me a picture. If I can get 1 from two different Flickr members that would make two pics. If I can't get them to agree to a license tag that'll get the picture up on the article page, then I'm screwed. What else do I need to work on? There can't be too much left, no? Bastian (talk) 21:18, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, pictures are NOT a must for good article status. So they aren't required, it's just that it would be nice to have a picture. But many articles are passed without any pictures at all. I myself passed Borneo shark without any pictures. I insisted the nominator get a picture first before I pass it and he quoted the criteria that a picture is not a requirement. Anyhow, I am still looking for one because I myself would like a picture on the article. Even if we don't have one now, the article can be passed while I work on getting a picture. What else besides a picture do you want me to do? If it's just the picture you're waiting on, then I would hope you'd pass it and I'll work on getting picture. Bastian (talk) 23:05, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
So is there anything else you want done besides a picture? A little more communication here would help me out, lol. Bastian (talk) 01:39, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
I sent some e-mail to a bunch of different Flickr members with pictures of this species asking for permission to use it. The problem is that when they here "commercial use", they freak out. I assured them that it is very rare, almost non-existent that people take pictures off of Wiki and use them for some kind of commercial use. Anyhow, would external links to a couple of youtube videos and a few websites about the species be enough? Bastian (talk) 03:55, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hey, I found a guy on Flickr who is willing to donate any snake picture that I like. Problem is it is difficult to communicate with him as he is Spanish. Here are some of his pictures. He has several King cobra pics, monocled cobra pics, and there is one picture of a completely black snake that looks like Naja nigricollis, but it was taken in Morocco and N. nigricollis nigricollis is very, very rare in northern Africa (it isn't even considered to be part of their range most of the time), while Naja haje are far more common in that region. So I don't know. At least we can get a monocled cobra picture, as that article needs a picture, anyway. --Bastian (talk) 17:05, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
Mentor?
[edit]Hey! As things turned out, it was a good thing we had to cancel the ski trip, as our presence at home was needed for a funeral :( :( Anyway ... I see you've been interacting with Sebastian80, and was wondering if you're up for mentoring? His Black mamba article first came to my attention via Casliber's talk page, and I noted that is was passed GA in spite of being quite deficient (on the talk page, Sebastian80 is arguing with editors who opine the article needs prose work, resulting in one of them pinging my talk). Independently, I just realized that this is the same editor who put up a (driveby) nomination for FAC, untranscluded, resulting in this discussion. When I went to notify him that I'd removed the FAC template, I noticed your interaction with him and that it was the same editor as the black mamba article-- it looks like from the comments on the black mamba talk page that he could use some guidance from someone ... just like yerself ... if you're up for it. :) :) Happy New Year! More Samuel Colt
[edit]I don't understand this sentence: "Because the company's owners were reluctant to fund the new machinery to make the interchangeable parts...". In the paragraph before, the formation of the company is described: "Colt quickly formed a corporation of New York and New Jersey venture capitalists." Is it Colt's company? Or do others own it? The "owners" who were reluctant to fund the new machinery were the venture capitalists? But then, why did they form the company if they weren't willing to finance machinery to make the revolver? - I dropped you a brief note on my talk with some comments. I'll try to leave you some more here, rather than at the FAC, but I have promises to keep and all that stuff.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:46, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
GA Review
[edit]Hi, I'm with the Wikipedia:WikiProject AP Biology 2011. I've been working on the Olympic marmot as part of a project, and now, multiple reviewers have told me that it's ready to be reviewed for GA! I nominated it, but User:TCO suggests to recruit reviewers to facilitate the process, and he directed me to you and a few other users. I would like to ask if you weren't too busy, to do the GA review for the Olympic marmot. I'd really appreciate it! I'm going to ask a few of the other names he gave me about this too, and whoever has the time to get to it first can review it. Thanks! Imthebombliketicktick (talk) 17:54, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for the review. I know there is still much to add to the article and much to improve, but I think thus far it is okay. I will continue to work hard trying to improve whatever article that I can. Bastian (talk) 17:36, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
do you know?
[edit]Hi,
I'm curious how the close paraphrasing problems were determined to be a problem on Harry Toulmin (Unitarian minister), as I tried various methods and free tools and didn't find it. Are some editors using paid services? Or how do they do it? MathewTownsend (talk) 21:40, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
This is the first time i heard about this name what is in the article. I'm a Vietnamese. I have been studying about Vietnam war all my life including both sources from Vietnam and the USA. I'm currently live in America. I started to doubt whatever sources are in that article are pretty much fake. Perhaps they were written by people who really hate the North. If she is a Vietnamese, why she doesn't has a Vietnamese name?Trongphu (talk) 04:17, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
- I thought you are the one who wrote most of the article. Guess not then. So who is the one who respond for most of the article? I really think it's fake.Trongphu (talk) 21:59, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
- Ok just answer my question as i mentioned in the discussion. I'm going to sleep now. I will discuss more with you tomorrow to clear things up.Trongphu (talk) 05:59, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
HERE!
- I'm not saying i will. I probably won't. I'm not a writer nor do i even think about being a writer. Just made it as an example. Let clear things up, the books were written by people who made them up was just one of many possibilities that could happen. I didn't certainly say that is the case but i said or and perhaps it is. I also listed other possibilities. Ok let me ask you this, have you read the books? To this point, what i'm concerned about is do the authors actually mention Apache in the books? Let say author A wrote a book named B. And then someone else used his book to be a reference on something that is not even in the book.Trongphu (talk) 03:05, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I have read the books, I actually own them and the video in question. That is how they refer to her in the books as Apache. I knew Hathcock when he was alive. I know Charles Sasser, Richard Marcinko, and John Plaster, too. I believe this story. I do not believe it to be made up, however in the interest of neutrality I added one source that did not believe it.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 06:14, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Apache
[edit]I figured we'd take it to talk, rather than give the perception we are fighting at AFD. Again, I was initially against the creation of the article, on the basis of not having enough information on the subject. The direct quotes and the sourcing to the vido on YT came from the article's creator, I just did my best with what print sources were available and included the opposing view from the Sociology professor. That said, I am willing to work with you to improve it. I would be in favor of stripping out the "Quoted transcripts" from the video and replacing them with an external link to Plaster's video in an external link section as I feel it is lurid and nonencyclopedic. For the record, I am convinced this woman existed and that Gunny Hathcock killed her. I believe she tortured some Marines and that is what made her a high value target for 1st MARDIV in that area of operations. As for the rats in the basket deal, well I may be seeing Jim Land in a few days and if I get the opportunity I will ask him about it. I don't really care if it stays in the article and if you want to remove it without disrupting the reference I have no objections. We may have differing opinions, but that's no reason why we can't work together.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 19:55, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Mike, nice to meet you. Sorry for my snark at AfD — it's a rough neighborhood, as a Wikipedia vet like yourself knows well by now. The issues are complex, we'll work them out, I have no doubt. I'll track down Lembcke's book and lay out his contrarian case, perhaps one or both of the bios of the sniper as well; a minor rename of the article, a little balancing of the wording, and removal of the pretty clearly false rats-in-a-basket story (it is borrowed from Orwell, let there be no mistake) and we should be good to go. I didn't mean to indicate you were a liar for listing the History Channel documentary, I was just surprised to see that — I didn't catch it in the footnotes — and needed to investigate. Sorry that came out wrong. "Trust But Verify," as Jimmy Carter said, ha ha. I do appreciate your message and look forward to working with you. Way too much heat in that AfD debate, for sure. Sorry about my end of that... I'll be in touch in a week or two when I have some books. Carrite (talk) 20:05, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads-up on changes, I've shut my brain off on this one for a while (until I've got some sources). Now working on a new biographical piece on Alexander Howat. Best, — Tim //// Carrite (talk) 21:03, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Hey, I need your help
[edit]Hey, I made a request to move Naja atra to Chinese cobra (per WP:COMMONNAME) and I would appreciate your support, if you think such a move is good. The name "Chinese cobra" is the most common vernacular name for this species, not only in English but in most other languages from German to Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, Dutch, Norwegian, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Farsi, Hindu, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and Mandarin. Just go to Wikipedia:Requested moves and it is listed under January 9, 2012. Under the same date (Jan. 9) I also made a request for Naja sputatrix → Javan spitting cobra – as per WP:COMMONNAME. I have a few other requests: Under January 14, 2012 I requested Cape Cobra be moved to Cape cobra - per WP:MOSCAPS ("Wikipedia avoids unnecessary capitalization"). I made similar requests on January 13, 2012 for the Philippine Cobra → Philippine cobra and Red Spitting Cobra → Red spitting cobra. I would appreciate your support in these. Thanks.
