Please support the Sustainability Initiative!
Hi, Mike Peel! Please allow me to follow up on a project that was discussed at the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin a couple of weeks ago:
I am writing you to ask for your support for the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 250 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.
The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has recently passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Now, we are working with the Wikimedia Foundation staff to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.
In order to demonstrate that this is an issue that the community really cares about, I would like to ask you to sign the project page as well. Thank you! --Gnom (talk) 15:55, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

Can we fix this template so it doesn't add entries to Wikipedia:Database reports/Transclusions of deleted templates/1? We fixed this in Module:Location map by (1) Checking to see if the module exists/works, and then if that fails, (2) Checking to see if the template exists/works. It's important to try the module first, before trying the template, since the plan is to eventually have all the maps in module space. I could probably fix {{Wikidata location map}}, but it would probably take me longer, and you seem to be more familiar with the code. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:47, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
- I think I fixed a typo. At least it doesn't look like I broke it. But, you _should_ be able to merge all of this into Module:Location map to avoid duplicating the logic already in that module, and to get the look up order to be consistent. Also, I had to fix 3.67 m Advanced Electro Optical System Telescope since the pin was outside of the box. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:17, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
- I created Template:Wikidata location map/sandbox which consolidates all the duplicate code, and uses the correct ifexist ordering for checking to see if the module/template exists. I think that rather than trapping errors, we should have an optional '|error=' for {{location map}} which would further reduce the code by allowing for the removal of the 'ifexist' checks. Frietjes (talk) 13:56, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
- That's great, thank you! It's been a long day, so I'll reply in more detail another time, but these changes look great to me! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:27, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
@Plastikspork and Frietjes: Thanks for the comments and edits with this template. It's intended as a work-around to try to fetch both the coordinate and the choice of location map from Wikidata. Unfortunately, it's not working very well at the moment as (a) it's rather clumsily coded by me (it should be in Lua, ideally as you say in the main module, but I don't know Lua), and (b) it's not obvious which parameters we can use to reliably identify the correct location map to use. I started some discussions at Module talk:Location map and on Wikidata to try to ask for help to figure this out, but they didn't get very far. Ideally right now, some more work on figuring out the right properties to use, as well as improvements in the logic for how to find the right map, would be useful - although even better would be a way to figure out the right map just by using the coordinate. Also @RexxS, Johnuniq, and Jackmcbarn: as others that might have an interest in this issue. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 15:26, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
- it's definitely be possible to have Module:Location map tell you if the marker is outside of the map. in fact, the items sorted under 'O' in Category:Location maps with possible errors are maps with the marker outside of the map. I could see passing a list of maps, and having Module:Location map use the first one with the pin inside the map. then you could say provide a list like 'San Diego County, California#USA California#USA#Earth' and it would use the first "valid" map on the list. Frietjes (talk) 12:32, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Frietjes: That would work - in that case we could return the results of multiple parameters with the values linked together as a as a hash-separated string for the module to take its pick of. Is there a way of getting something like that implemented? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 06:24, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
Infoboxes of observatories: add link-feature
Hi Mike, not long ago you have been going through a large number of observatory-articles, adding infoboxes and migrating data. I thought of an additional feature, namely the linkage of the observatory code given in the infobox. For example, observatory code "035" for Østervold Observatory would link to List of observatory codes#035, since that list is now an anchored table. What do you think? Apologies if that is of no concern to you, Rfassbind – talk 10:37, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Rfassbind: done. Please check in some articles to make sure it is working correctly. It was previously linked to from "Code" rather than the number, so I've removed that link in preference for the more direct link. That means that the link won't appear on non-Wikidata values for the observatory code, though... Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:21, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
- Great, thx! Yes the anchored-links to the referenced table are A.O.K. However, I wouldn't have removed
[[List of observatory codes|Code]]
as both links have their own merit (one explains what an observatory code is, the other gives you the corresponding entry). Best, Rfassbind – talk 11:30, 13 May 2017 (UTC) - follow-up.. especially because not all articles, e.g. City Observatory show a link on the code itself (as they are still hard-coded in the article), Rfassbind – talk 11:35, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Rfassbind: I can add that link back in easily, but it seems like duplication to have two links to the same Wikipedia article? I could also enable it for non-Wikidata values, but I'm not sure if there are articles that have been hard-coded to include links or not (if there are, then it will be a mess). I'm happy to change this line as you want, though. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:37, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
- I think that two links (lead section and a table-row entry, respectively) are rather complementary than redundant. I now see that City Observatory shows a link on "Code" again. So, to my best understanding, articles with Wikidata show the anchored link (only) while non-Wikidata article show the un-anchored link (only).
- Going through the code-list, Isaac Roberts' Observatory, observatory code 001, does not even have an infobox, although there is even an image available on Wikicommons. From my point of view, there is only one thing to do: all observatory articles with an IAU/MPC code need to be updated/migrated on Wikidata. This might involve checking a guesstimated 200–500 observatory articles, but I think its worth the effort. What do you think? Best, Rfassbind – talk 13:37, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Rfassbind: I think the one that you saw that still showed the code link was a cached copy. I've now added back the observatory code link to *all* articles, and the direct link appears when Wikidata values are shown (and is not shown when the code is not supplied through Wikidata).
- I've been working through all telescope infoboxes to convert them entirely to Wikidata templates; I'm planning on continuing that with observatories at some point. So I think it's definitely worth the effort, and anything you can do here would be fantastic. :-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 14:02, 13 May 2017 (UTC)~
- @Rfassbind: I can add that link back in easily, but it seems like duplication to have two links to the same Wikipedia article? Contrary to {{Infobox observatory}}
, the template {{Infobox telescope}}
does not recognize parameter |code=
at all (example edit). An observatory code of the IAU–MPC (as defined in List of observatory codes) can refer any "entity" that reports astrometric data to the MPC, which not only includes observatories/"observatory sites" but also (dedicated) telescopes and surveys/programs.
So could parameter |code=
be added to {{Infobox telescope}}
and {{Infobox astronomical survey}}
as it is not recognize/documented by/for these templates? Otherwise I cannot cross-reference the observatory code to a large fraction of articles. Rfassbind – talk 11:25, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Rfassbind: I've now added that parameter to Infobox telescope (including the local parameter and the Wikidata fetch). It seems to work OK for Large Binocular Telescope. Is there an example survey which has an observatory code? Would it not make more sense to use infobox telescope in those cases, if they are the work of dedicated telescopes? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 15:00, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
- Thx for adding
|code=
to Infobox telescope. For{{Infobox astronomical survey}}
, there are several listed in List of minor planet discoverers § Discovering dedicated institutions (search keyword: "survey", finds 20 existing articles, most of them using the survey-template. In addition, there are also some (survey) articles such as Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, IRAS and Akari (satellite), that are using {{Infobox spaceflight}}). So, I don't think it would be a good idea to use the telescope instead of a the survey template. Not every survey uses a dedicated telescope, in fact, the countless surveys made from "Palomar" (see List of observatory codes, searching for "palomar") suggests otherwise. Rfassbind – talk 16:41, 17 May 2017 (UTC)- @Rfassbind: OK, it's now added to Infobox astronomical survey - see e.g. Asiago-DLR Asteroid Survey. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:53, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
- Cool, Asiago-DLR Asteroid Survey is great, linking to List of observatory codes#209. Well done. Thank you. Rfassbind – talk 11:04, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
